Foreword

MERSIN 2013

Drage športašice i športaši, članovi mediteranske delegacije,Čast mi je i zadovoljstvo što vas u ime Hrvatskog olimpijskog odbora mogu pozdraviti i zaželjeti vam ugodan boravak i uspješno natjecanje na XVII. Mediteranskim igrama Mersin 2013.

Svim hrvatskim športašima u Mersinu želim najbolje osobne rezultate i puno zadovoljstva.

MERSIN 2013

Dear athletes and members of the Mediterranean delegation,It is my honor and pleasure to greet you on behalf of the Croatian Olympic Committee and wish you a pleasant stay and successful competition at the 17th Mediterranean Games Mersin 2013.

Since 1951, the best athletes from Mediterranean countries have compared their skills at this international multi-sports event. With their previous performances at the Mediterranean Games, the Croatian athletes have won a handful of medals and thus overjoyed the Croatian sports public. I am sure that this one, the sixth performance since the establishment of the independent and autonomous Republic of Croatia will be remembered as a very successful one and that it will, at the same time, be an indicator of the quality and development of all Croatian sports.

To all the Croatian athletes in Mersin I wish the best personal results and much satisfaction. I believe that with their performances, but also with the behavior at sports arenas and outside of them, they will at all times promote sports ethics, tolerance and fair play.

Uvodna riječ

Foreword

Želim svima ugodan boravak u Mersinu i dobre osobne rezultate.

MERSIN 2013

[ 9 ]

Dear athletes, dear sports friends,With great joy I am expecting the performance of Croatian athletes at the Mediterranean Games, the sixth since the Republic of Croatia gained its independence and autonomy. Twenty years have passed since the fi rst one in the French region of Languedoc-Roussillon. During this period, Croatian athletes have won a total of 141 medals, of which 32 gold, 50 silver and 59 bronze. Therefore, the criteria for the selection of athletes for the MG Mersin 2013 were high, just like our expectations. I am convinced both at this Mediterranean Games we will have a lot of reasons to celebrate.

But besides the sports events, dear athletes, do not forget the positive values of sports. Be, at all times, the promoters of culture of non-violence, friendship and peace, and represent yourselves and Croatian sports with dignity.

I wish you all a pleasant stay in Mersin and good personal results.

Hrvatski olimpijski odbor punopravni je član Udruženja nacionalnih olimpijskih odbora (ANOC), Europskih olimpijskih odbora (EOO), Međunarodnog odbora Mediteranskih igara (MOMI) i Europskih nevladinih športskih organizacija (ENGSO).

Hrvatski olimpijski odbor osnivač je Hrvatskog kluba olimpijaca (1993), Hrvatske olimpijske akademije (1996), Vijeća športske arbitraže i Športskog arbitražnog sudišta (1999) te suosnivač Europskog fair play pokreta (1994), Zaklade hrvatskih športaša (2006), Hrvatskog fair play odbora (2006), Mreže koordinatorica u športu (2006) te brojnih drugih organizacija

koje pripadaju hrvatskom i međunarodnom olimpijskom pokretu.

Sportska televizija (prvi specijalizirani športski digitalni televizijski kanal u Hrvatskoj) započela je s emitiranjem u ponedjeljak, 4. travnja 2011. godine u 17.00 sati u emisiji Vijesti.

The Croatian Olympic Committee, the highest sports body in Croatia, was founded in Zagreb on 10 September 1991. The Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee granted the Croatian Olympic Committee provisional recognition on 17 January 1992, thus including it in the Olympic family and making it possible for Croatian athletes to participate under the Croatian fl ag in the Olympic Winter Games in Albertville and in the Games of the Olympiad in Barcelona that very same year.

Members of the Croatian Olympic Committee are national sports associations (38 of them are Olympic and 42 non-Olympic sports), 20 county sports associations and the City of Zagreb and 10 associations and institutions of interest for Croatian sport and the activities of the Croatian Olympic Committee.

The Croatian Olympic Committee is a full member of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC), the European

Croatian Olympic Committee introduced in 2012 on the website www.hoo.hr the national online news service called “Sports Croatia”. It provides direct, decentralized promotion of activities of COC members regardless of whether the Web, Facebook or blog page of members or athletes. Sports, along with local communities of the Republic of Croatia, is currently the only activity in which this independent public transmission of news is applied free of physical or content limitations. In 2013, the Croatian Sports Journalist Association presented a special award to the news service Sports Croatia..

S tim idealima u prvom planu danas Republika Hrvatska s novom snagom u Europskoj uniji počinje djelovati kao vrijedan i konstruktivan partner.

A¯er the submission of request for accession in 2003 and after becoming an official candidate - upon the recommendation by the European Commission - one year later, in 2011 the Republic of Croatia completed the negotiations and on July 1st, 2013 will become the 28th Member country of the European Union. Full membership in the European Union for Croatia means a completely new form of thinking and decision-making, but also a new kind of responsibility that goes

MERSIN 2013

beyond self-interest, a contribution to the strength and striving to achieve the vision of the European Union.

Today we speak proudly about Croatia as a successful example of Europeanization and democratization, as a country that has quite deservedly become a full member of the European Union and the country that has already – in terms of geographic and culture – been a part of this integrated European space for a long time, that makes its full integration into the Union more simple and natural. It also shows the depth of changes that Croatia has achieved in the previous period, which would not have been possible without the joint work of those who have, within the Croatian territory, been persistent in promoting the reforms and transformations of the entire society, and friends from member countries of the European Union, which had confidence in Croatia, encouraging and stimulating Croatia to implement reforms. In the upcoming period, the Republic of Croatia will be open to a number of new possibilities but also a growing area for intensifying relations with partners and friends within the European Union. It should be noted that Croatia has an extremely favorable and important position, both in the geographical and political sense, especially as a connection point of the European Union and South Eastern Europe. Croatia will put exactly this comparative advantage into the operation of its new, full-fledged membership in the Union, and become a space that enables successful communication both on a regional and European basis, as well as on a global one. For this purpose, Croatia will enhance and emphasize its capacities to actively participate in the most important processes and to be a responsible and constructive member. The accession of the Republic of Croatia into the European Union is reflected in all aspects of the economy and society, and brings new potential effects. With a full-fledged

membership in the European Union, Croatia has an opportunity to show all the potentials of its economy, tourism, culture, science, education and sports, and take advantage of all of its virtues, that make it an attractive destination, an excellent partner and a potential economically successful country. Along with all this, emphasis will be placed on making contacts among people, because it is, without doubt, the most precious part of the cooperation between the countries and societies.

When it comes to sports, all the potential areas of impact to the accession into the European Union have been identified, all the new rules and priorities have been analyzed, in full accordance with the current European strategy, which will undoubtedly result in a better flow of ideas and information in this segment. It is important to note that in Croatian politics and its whole society since the first day there has been a consensus on the main direction of Croatian politics, the one that expressed a desire and need of the country to became a part of the European union as soon as possible, the part of the space and views to which Croatian society has already belonged for centuries. Croatian citizens, as well as official politics, saw In the European Union a symbol and instrument of Croatian society. The commitment was clear, because, besides all the above mentioned, the European Union is also a community of peace, harmony and respect for diversity. In this sense, Croatia joins this year the member countries of the European Union in constant improvement of democratic potentials, the effectiveness of institutions and raising the level of freedom, justice, peace, democracy, development and solidarity. With these ideals in the forefront, today the Republic of Croatia, along with the new power in the European Union, begins acting as a valuable and constructive partner.
