Introduction and Project Background
SRK Consulting South Africa (Pty) Ltd (SRK) has been appointed by Sasol South Africa (Pty) Ltd (Sasol) as an independent Environmental Assessment Practitioner (EAP) to apply for a Waste Management Licence (WML) for the proposed Fine Ash Dam (FAD) 6 cement-ash mixing plant for the undermining stabilisation process of portions of FAD 6 at Sasol Secunda in the Mpumalanga Province. The cement-ash mixing plant triggers waste activities listed in Category B of GNR 921 of the National Environmental Management: Waste Act (Act No. 59 of 2008) (NEM: WA) and will require a will require a WML.
All activities listed in Category B of GNR require a full Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) i.e. Scoping and Impact Assessment phases to be conducted as part of the application for a WML. The Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) evaluated the Scoping Report on 03 July 2018 and was satisfied that the report complies with the minimum requirements set out in Appendix 2 of GN 982 of 04 December 2014. DEA accepted the Scoping Report, allowing Sasol to proceed with the EIA phase of the application in accordance with the tasks outlined in the plan of study.
