    ACTIVITIES OF THE CIRCLE OF THE GREEK CHILDRENS BOOK, IN 2009

    ______________________________________

    JANUARY

    The Circles members and their friends met at Athineon Politia in Thissio to cut the

    traditional New Year cake.

    o Opening of the celebrations for the 40 years since the constitution of the Greek

    Section of IBBY.

    o Awards granted to members who had been members of the Administrative

    Board in the previous years.

    A special commemorative logo was created by Diatsenta Parissi. This logo was used for

    all of our activities throughout the year.

    The Greek section of IBBY and The National Book Center of Greece organized the 2nd

    Exhibition of Books for Children and Young People that took place in HELEXPO

    premises in Maroussi, Athens (23 to 26 January 2009) in cooperation with the

    Panhellenic Association of Publishers and Booksellers. The country to be honoured was

    the U.K. while the common topic for most of the activities of the exhibition was Dreams

    and Nightmares. Thousands of children and young people had the opportunity to travel

    in the fantastic world of literature. That was the first time that the Greek section of IBBY

    had its own stand artistically made by the illustrator Diatsenta Parissi.

    During the exhibition and in cooperation with the National Book Center of Greece, the

    Greek section of IBBY organized a) a meeting for educators who discussed about The

    relationship of the school with children and young peoples literature in our days.

    Prospects and perspectives, b) The Authors Corner, where authors read pieces of their

    works to children.

    FEBRUARY Cooperation with IBBY Bookbird, A Journal for International Childrens Literature,

    with the help of our correspondent in Greece since 2005, Mrs. Vassiliki Nika.

    Cooperation with the IBBY Documentation Center of Books for Disabled Young

    People. More specifically, Litsa Psarafti is in contact with the Center so as Greek books

    to be sent there and be included in its travelling exhibition as well as in the catalogues

    published every two years since the contents of the books sent are judged to be proper.

    Cooperation with the International Youth Library of Munich. More specifically, a

    number of 150 Greek childrens books recently published were donated to the library

    while Mrs. Vassiliki Nika and Mrs. Eva Kaliskami recommended Greek books for the

    yearly journal of the library, White Ravens 2009.

    Books offered to Daidio Childrens Library in the Municipality of Kalamaria.

    MARCH

    On request of the Ministry of Education, the Greek section of IBBY sent a list of

    people recommended to work on the selection of children and young peoples books that

    will be awarded the National Children and Young Peoples Awards.

    Efforts were made for a more-in-depth cooperation with the Ministry of Education. A

    circular was sent to all of the schools in Greece concerning the possible forms of

    celebration of the ICBD.

    Meetings of committees for the IBBY Greece yearly awards to Greek creators

    and childrens literature personalities.

    APRIL The ICBD 2009 material (poster and message) was translated by the Greek section of

    IBBY while the printing of it was sponsored by Patakis Publications. The material was

    dispatched to schools and libraries all over the country by Patakis Publications and the

    National Book Center of Greece.

    The ICBD was officially celebrated at Technopolis of Athens Municipality with

    the support of the Cultural Organization, the Municipality of Athens and Greek

    Publishers. The IBBY Greece yearly awards were granted to Greek creators and

    childrens literature personalities.

    The Bulletin of the Greek Section of IBBY 2009 was published sponsored my

    Minoas Publications.

    MAY

    The auditors prepared their report and the Annual General Assembly took place.

    The Greek section of IBBY participated in the meeting organized by the University of

    Athens and the University of Patras for the authoress Maro Loizou.

    The seventh yearly Penelope Maximou lecture was given by Mrs. Gina Kalogirou,

    Associate Professor of the University of Athens, at the library Keti Laskaridou in

    Piraeus on a topic related to children and young peoples literature, Myths Turns:

    Survival of Fairy-tale in Literature.

    The Greek section of IBBY participated in the activities of the 6th National Book

    Exhibition in Thessaloniki having its own stand. The exhibition was organized by the

    National Book Center of Greece (28-31 May 2009) in HELEXPO premises in

    Thessaloniki. The country to be honoured was Germany while most of the exhibition

    activities were related to historic books. Mr. Merkourios Avtzis, curator of IBBY in

    northern Greece areas, coordinated our volunteers there. Most of our members

    participated in our main activity that was the Corner of Author and Illustrator.

    Books offered to the library of the 8th Junior High School of Athens.

    Decisions were made for our sections participation in the celebrations for the 35

    years since the constitution of the Cypriot section of IBBY in February 2010

    with the delivery of speeches by the President and Vice-president of the Greek Section of

    IBBY.

    JUNE Publication of volume containing the lectures given during the two-day meeting of

    the Greek Section of IBBY in Thessaloniki (May 2007) with the cooperation of the

    Central Municipal Library of Thessaloniki and the magazine Diadromes. The volume

    was edited by the Speech and Culture Lab of the University of Thessalia while the main

    topic of the lectures given was Unlocking the secrets of todays society Contemporary

    social issues in Greek children and young peoples literature.

    The Pedagogical Department of Primary School Education, with the support of

    the Greek section of IBBY, hosted Mrs. Isabel Sofia Calvrio Correia, researcher of

    the University of Coimbra (Portugal) in the New Amphitheater of the Central Building

    of the University of Athens. The topic of the lecture given was: Once Upon a Time

    There Was a Dark Castle with a Dragon Inside: From Medieval Fiction to the Teaching

    of Literature to Children.

    After meeting the President of the Greek Book Center of Greece, Mrs. Velissari, the

    Administrative Board of the Greek section of IBBY decided to cooperate for the

    creation of a portal related to children and books that the National Book Center is

    considering to create.

    The Administrative Board of the Greek section of IBBY decided on its cooperation

    with the Committee of Panhellenic Fairy-tale Competition of Kids Fun

    magazine together with other institutions. The message written for the ICBD 2010 was

    decided to be the inspiring source for children.

    JULY-AUGUST

    The office remained closed.

    SEPTEMBER

    The lending library started operating with the help of Mrs. Iro Papamoschou.

    An informative circular and the announcement for the Greek section of IBBY

    competitions 2010 were sent to the members of the section. Greek publishers were

    informed about the sections competitions, too. Owing to financial difficulties, the 2010

    awards will not be accompanied by an amount of money, as it used to be.

    With the help of the Greek section of IBBY, Greek illustrators participated in the

    International Exhibition of Childrens Book Illustration as well as in the

    International Competition of Illustrators organized by BIB. Mrs. Filomila

    Vakali-Syrogiannopoulou offered valuable help to the Greek section of IBBY and its

    participants.

    The Greek section of IBBY nominated the illustrator Vasso Psaraki for the Astrid

    Lindgren Memorial Award 2010.

    OCTOBER

    The Greek candidates for the 2010 H.C. Andersen Awards, Loty Petrovits-

    Andrutsopoulou (writing) and Diatsenta Parissi (illustration), prepared and submitted

    their dossiers.

    Dispatch of books included in the 2010 IBBY Honour List:

    a) for writing: the authoress Sofia Madouvalou for the book, Alla ta matia tis maimous

    kai alla tis koukouvagias / The Monkeys Eyes Are One Thing And the Owls Another,

    (Patakis Publications),

    b) for illustration: the illustrator Effie Lada for the book, E Vrohi ton Asteryon / A Rain

    The members of the Greek Section of IBBY were informed about the IBBY Congress in

    September 2010 in Spain, Santiago de Compostela.

    Books offered to the 1st Primary School of Prosotsani in the Municipality of Drama.

    The Greek section of IBBY asked for offers and donations for the reconstruction of its

    website.

    NOVEMBER

    The members of the Greek section of IBBY were informed about the fact that the

    National Book Centre of Greece is going to create a portal about children and

    books. Each of our members can offer relevant material (unpublished texts games etc).

    We also recorded pieces of work by members of our section who had been candidates for

    the HCA award in the previous years or their books had been included in past IBBY

    Honour Lists. This material will be used for the enrichment of the portal.

    The Administrative Board and members of our section discussed about possible future

    activities and the importance of volunteerism.

    The ICBD message was received and translated by the honourary president of the

    Greek section of IBBY, Mrs. Loty Petrovits-Andrutsopoulou.

    The juries for the Circles competitions (2009-2010) were set up.

    Books offered to the 1st Primary School of Spata as well as to 3 more schools of the

    Municipality of Corfu.

    DECEMBER Preparations for the 3rd International Exhibition of Books for Children and

    Young People organized by the National Book Center of Greece in cooperation with the

    Greek section of IBBY. Brochures will be printed and given to the exhibition visitors for

    the promotion of the activities of the Greek section of IBBY as well as IBBY worldwide.

    Material to be included in the Circles bulletin (Deltio 2010) was compiled.

    During 2009, the Administrative Board met 9 times.

    The lending library operated under the responsibility of Mrs. Iro Papamoschou.

    Apart from the Administrative Board, the Liaison Officers for IBBY and the IBBY

    Documentation Center of Books for Disabled Young People, as well as members of the

    juries, voluntary work was offered by the honorary president of our section, Mrs. Loty

    Petrovits-Andrutsopoulou, as well as the ex Vice President Mrs. Koula Kouloubi, who

    was responsible for the theoretical part of the library.

    Our office operated with the help of the members of the Administrative Board, the

    honorary president of our section, Mrs. Loty Petrovits-Andrutsopoulou, Mrs. Enissa

    Zikou, Mrs. Christina Kalaitzidi, Mr. Dimitris Prousalis and Mrs. Katerina Dermata.
