MediCARE (age >65 or with disabilities) Different parts of Medicare cover different services. You may hear about four parts of Medicare: Part A, Part

B, Part C, and Part D.

Original Medicare is administered directly by the federal government, is the way most people get their

Medicare, and has two parts:

Part A (Hospital Insurance) covers most medically necessary hospital, skilled nursing facility, home health,

and hospice care. It is free if you have worked and paid Social Security taxes for at least years; you will pay a

monthly premium if you have worked and paid taxes for less time.

Part B (Medical Insurance) covers most medically necessary doctors’ services, preventive care, durable

medical equipment, hospital outpatient services, laboratory tests, x-rays, mental health care, and some home

health and ambulance services. You pay a monthly premium for this coverage.

Medicare Part D (outpatient Prescription Drug Insurance) is the part of Medicare that provides outpatient

prescription drug coverage. Part D is provided only through private insurance companies that have contracts

with the government—it is never provided directly by the government (like Original Medicare is).

If you want Part D, you must choose Part D coverage that works with your Medicare health benefits. If you

have Original Medicare, choose a stand-alone Part D plan (PDP).

Medicare Part C is not a separate benefit. Part C is the part of Medicare policy that allows private health

insurance companies to provide Medicare benefits. These Medicare private health plans, such as HMOs and

PPOs, are known as Medicare Advantage Plans. If you want, you can choose to get your Medicare coverage

through a Medicare Advantage Plan instead of through Original Medicare.

We provide medical, dental and pharmacy services to adults who reside in Central Virginia, are uninsured or

underinsured, and who have income less than 200% of the Federal Poverty Level. Individuals are considered

underinsured if their health insurance does not cover the medically necessary service they are requesting. If

you have Medicaid or Medicare, you may be eligible for our dental services. If you have Medicare, you might

also be eligible to participate in our MedsHelp program, to cover the costs of medications. Educational

classes are provided to all community members regardless of income.

The Free Clinic of Central Virginia does not serve specific counties, however all patients must reside in the

state of Virginia. If a patient is living in a homeless shelter, transitional or treatment program, a letter from

the facility verifying resident status replaces the above documentation. You will be asked to provide income

verification at a later date. We also require that patients provide a valid ID or passport, whether it be from

another country.

If a patient has diabetes or any other illness that requires medication, we do require them to become medical

patients of the Free Clinic in order to receive their prescription. We have a pharmacy in house for our

patients, but we can also send prescriptions to be filled where is most convenient for the patient. All of our

services are free but we do ask that patients make a small monetary donation of $5 or $10. Prescriptions are

$3.
