Based

on the results of the survey andwith an eye to economic devel-

“It was a dream at first,”says Tom Howie, one of themusical consultants for theSt. Barth Summer Sessions.“We wanted to record a songwith all of the musiciansfrom the festival to helpeveryone bond more cre-atively musically.” Luckily, the Eden Rock Hotel has arecording studio outfittedwith the sound console thatJohn Lennon used to record“Imagine” at Abbey RoadStudios in London.

As a result, the St Barth Summer Sessions musicianshave recorded “Aguas deMarco” or “Waters ofMarch,” by Antonio CarlosJobim and voted the bestBrazilian song of all time.“We gave it a modern take, and we have a lot of Brazil-ian musicians at the festi-val,” notes Howie. “StephanPoujol did the video shootin the studio and on thebeach, and will edit a clipwith scenes from some ofthe live concerts as well. Weworked in the studio on

three different days as notall of the musicians werehere at the same time.” Onone of the days, the festivalhouse band played with gui-tarists Ry Faraday andAlvaro Kapaz doing solos, and on another day Howieand Brazilian singer TaisAlverenga did a duo in Eng-lish and Portuguese, givingthe song an internationalflavor. The Eden RockHotel lent the studio to themusicians for these record-ing sessions, while festivalsound engineer FernandoLodeiro, a top engineer atAvatar Studios in New YorkCity did the recording (heloved the console, notesHowie). The video clip willincorporate the song, and beposted on YouTube whencompleted. “It will be usedfor promotion,” saysHowie. “But also to sum upthe festival.”

For the past several years, JacksonQuestel, organizer of the SB JamMusik Festival, which is dedicatedto Caribbean music, has wanted toinclude salsa on the program. Yet ittook until this year to get the rightgroup, the celebrated Alfredo de laFe, who will close the sixth annualSB Jam Musik Festival,on Saturday night,August 20. This salsamusician/violinist hasplayed with the best inhis genre and will beaccompanied by singerXiomara and four Cubanmusicians who live in theUnited States. These“salseros” will performon the same program withthe Haitian trio CaRiMi,who played at the 2007festival. These kings of theHaitian musical style,Compas, were so popularwith the local audience thatthey have been invited backfor a concert that should behot, hot, hot!

The opening night of thefestival on August 18 is ded-icated to musicians fromMartinique. Kali and DédéSaint Prix, two native sons, are first up, as a duo thenaccompanied by Kali’s musi-cians. To prepare, Dédé Saint

tinique. Kwaxicolorshould set the place on fire!

Also on the wish list for some time, singer Tanya Saint Val from Guade-loupe highlights the second night ofthe festival. This nationallyacclaimed star will play with mem-bers of the group Karavan, herpianist, and a bassist from Mar-tinique. Having made her firstrecordings at the age of nine, sherecently released an album celebrat-

ing her 25-year career. Thesecond half of the eveninggoes to a leading reggaeband from Jamaica. AfterThird World last year, it’stime for Culture to per-form on stage in SaintBarth. While this bandwas formed in the 70s,they lost their historicleader, Joseph Hill a fewyears ago, but he hasbeen replaced with hisson Kenyatta, who isnow taken over.

Pat To Animate The Festival

Not confirmed yet, but chances aregood that Pat, the actor-comedian-emcee, will present short stagesketches between the performances. Also new in 2011 is the making ofa 6-minute film by St-Barthvideo-live, which will later serve to helppromote the festival. And last butnot least, the 2011 SB Jam MusikFestival is one of the official eventsrecognized by the Overseas Minis-ter as part of the Year of OverseasFrance celebration.

The fifth leg of theSlalom Windsurf-ing World Cup washeld July 22-August 5 atFuerteventura inthe Canary Islands.Over five days ofracing, 10 competi-tions were held inhigh winds up to 35-40 knots. Theextremely difficult conditions werenot favorable for Antoine Questel,Saint Barth’s native windsurfingstar. “I arrived less prepared thanfor the preceding competitions,”admits Questel. “Since the begin-ning of the season, I had littleopportunity to train in such highwinds and to adapt my gear. Myresults were not as good as in thepast and I finished in 21st place, but in spite of that, it is encourag-ing that after six competitions atFuerteventura, 21st is my best per-

formance yet, which shows that Iam still progressingeven in conditionsthat are hard forme…The last day, withless wind, I quali-fied for a final racewhere I finished

fifth. In the second race of the day,I finished 15th. These good results, more in keeping with my level thisyear, allowed me to climb fourplaces higher in the overall stand-ings for the competition. This con-firms that I am still competitivewhen the wind is not so strong, closer to 15-30 knots. So I need towork on competing in higherwinds.” The next World Cup event forQuestel is the sixth, and next tolast, leg of the competition whichtakes place this week in Turkey.

Organized by the Saint Barth Ten-nis Club, the 4th Saint Barth OpenTennis Tournament kicked off onAugust 3 and is currently in fullswing through Sunday, August 14with the men’s final. After thefirst week of competition, YvesLacoste, the director of the SBTCprovided an update:“What a joy! This 4th edition isgoing great, with a nice ambianceand good sportsmanlike spirit, among the kids and adult players. The weather has been on our sideand as of today (Tuesday) wehaven’t had to postpone any of thematches. As for the games, Irepeat that there is a great spirit ofsportsmanship and high-qualityplaying in very closes matches. PuzzleThere's no math involved. The grid has numbers, butnothing has to add up to anything else. You solve thepuzzle with reasoning and logic. It's fun. It's challeng-ing. It's addictive!“Fill in the grid so that every row, every column, and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1through 9."That's all there is to it.
