In 2008, the province was told it had “miles to go” to address mental health issues in children. Seven years later, 69 per cent of children with mental disorders – more than 50,000 kids – still do not receive specialized services.

The government says progress is being made, with 5,000 more children getting help. But while that number has increased, The Record has found that the agency tasked with treating such kids employs fewer nurses and psychologists than it did in 2008.

Similarly, over the last seven years, provincial spending on Child and Youth Mental Health (CYMH) services has failed to keep up with inflation, much less the number of clients.

This comes despite repeated pleas – from parents, from the province’s Representative for Children and Youth, and last November from the BC Liberal-chaired Select Standing Com-mittee on Children and Youth – for the govern-ment to make youth mental health a priority.

That has left service providers doing their best to treat a growing clientele with funding that hasn’t seen a substantial boost in years.

As the executive director of the Fraser Val-ley Child Development Centre (FVCDC), Karen McLean oversees a team that provides sup-port to children with developmental and behavioural disorders – including ADHD (Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder) and Anxiety Disorder.

McLean said her organization has been receiving more referrals in recent years – often from schools.

McLean says the CYMH front-line staff do great work in assisting families, but there have been no appreciable hikes in funding for FVCDC programs for some time. Asked when funding last increased, a long pause follows.

Breakwaterdock installedKevin MillsMISSION RECORD

Mission harbour is getting a much-needed upgrade. Thanks to a federal initiative to make improvements to small craft harbours, Mission is getting its breakwater dock replaced.

“The original dock was installed over 40 years ago and it had a basic life expectancy of about 25 years, so it served very well,” said Alec Finnsson, president and chair of the Mission Harbour Authority.

Finnsson explained

that the old concrete dock has been removedand the new one is cur-rently being installed.

Passersby will likelyhave noticed the giant crane in the harbour, needed to perform the work.

According to Finns-son, the job should be completed by the end of the weekend, despite some minor setbacks.

“They had a real hardtime getting it (the newdock) up here becauseof the amount of flow in the river from thefreshet. So it took a little longer.”

A huge crane was brought in to Mission Harbour to help install a new breakwater dock. The old dock hasn’t been replaced for four decades. KEVIN MILLS PHOTO

totals $129,000Kevin MillsMISSION RECORD

Community groups will receive almost $129,000 in grant money from the District of Mis-sion this year.

Council approved a list of grants – both for community events and community enhance-ment – as recommended by the Municipal Grants Select Committee. A total of $85,000 in grants will go towards community enhancement while an additional $43,600 are dedicated to events.

Mission Mayor Randy Hawes said he is pleased that this year’s grants are free from any political influence.

“To ensure that there isn’t any undo influence from councillors, or the mayor, on the grants committee to favour, or not favour, any partic-ular applicant, we have ensured that there are no elected people on the grants advisory commit-tee,” he explained.

Coun. Pam Alexis said an “overhaul” of the grants process is needed, including the timing of when they are presented.

“Some of these events are already over,” she said.

The largest grant given this year is for $16,000 to the Mission Heritage Association for Canada Day celebrations. The smallest is $300 to the Mission Artist Associa-tion.

A community issueStone Soup program focuses on homelessnessKevin MillsMISSION RECORD

It’s going to take more than Mission council to successfully deal with this area’s growing homeless issues.

That’s the message Mission Mayor Randy Hawes believes has to become apparent. He called homelessness a commu-nity issue.

“This is not a thing for city council to fix, or the police to fix, or the health authority. This belongs to all of us. Every cit-izen has a little bit to play in this,” said Hawes.

Council held a special meet-ing on Friday to listen and dis-cuss some of the ideas created for Stone Soup – an outreach program to connect services to people who are homeless or suffering from addiction.

Paul Horn of BootStrap Con-sulting and Kirsten Hargreaves, the district’s manager of social development went over 35 pos-sible initiatives ranging from monthly potluck dinners to community mentor programs and even providing housing options.

Another possible initiative is the creation of an info card so people know where to get help and what group is providing it.

Horn explained to council that some individuals have “strong choices” of where they go for help.

As an example, Horn said faith-based charities may not resonate for some, while oth-

ers will have the opposite reaction.

H e i d i S m i t h , a mem-ber of the pub-lic who attended t h e m e e t -ing, told

council that most of the ideas presented were just addressing the symptoms.

“These people need a home,” she said. “Let’s deal with the really difficult issues, the big issues.”

But Hawes said if council starts looking at those kind of long-range solutions, they could end up not doing any-thing at all.

The purpose of the meeting was to examine all of the ideas and see which ones council felt it may play a part in.

“The very fundamental notion of Stone Soup is that everybody will contribute that one thing they have to contrib-ute so that the intent is that the load is spread very evenly which is both effective and effi-cient,” said Horn.

Hawes said some of the initia-tives have already been started by service groups, while others require limited participation by the district.

“More or less we talked about what things we should get going on and there were a few things that we can see we will probably have to invest a little money on,” said Hawes.

He said organizers will have to come back to council with a figure of how much they need.

“(You) can’t commit to some-thing when you have no idea of the cost.”

He called the meeting an evolutionary process, adding there will be more meetings in the future.

“The genesis of the program was just a few months ago,” he said, adding they have to decide “who should be involved and how do we get them involved.”

Once thing he knows for cer-tain is council can’t solve it alone.

OPINION Published & printed by Black Press Ltd. at 33047 First Avenue, Mission V2V 1G2

Stone Soup is an old folk tale about three hungry travellers who come to a town with nothing but an empty cooking pot. The townsfolk are reluctant to share food with the strangers so the travellers fill the pot with water, put a stone in it and place it on a fire.

Long story short, the townsfolk are curious about what the strangers are cooking and ask. They are told it is stone soup, which will be perfect, except it’s missing a vital ingre-dient. One person offers up carrots, another onions and so on until a huge, healthy pot of soup is created to feed the whole town.

The moral of the story is that a difficult problem can be solved with a little co-opera-tion and help from everyone.

Mission’s new Stone Soup initiative is attempting to recreate that story in real life.

Not just to make one meal, but to tackle homelessness altogether.

Last week, council met to discuss 35 pos-sible steps to address the growing homeless concern. It included short, medium and long term projects.

Like the story, the key to success lies in everyone doing something. Rather than expecting council to solve the issue, the pub-lic needs to ask itself what it can do to help.

The problem isn’t going away. You can’t just move it out of your neighbourhood and pretend it’s gone. It has to be addressed, by government, police, service groups, the pub-lic and the homeless themselves.

It’s a small step, but it’s in the right direc-tion.

QUESTION OF THE WEEKShould there be stiffer fines and penalties for distracted driving?

LAST WEEK WE ASKED:Do municipal parks in Mission need more infrastructure? Here’s how you responded: Yes 48% No 52%

Mission Commu-nity Foundation has announced that a new fund was recently cre-ated by the Mission 2014 BC Winter Games.

The Games Leg-acy Fund will allocate $23,000 for grants toward sports infra-structure in Mission and for bursaries for athlete/coach/official development in Mis-sion.

The Mission 2014 BC Winter Games also contributed $12,000 to the Public Art Endow-ment Fund, an exist-ing fund since 2010. This fund’s objective is to provide funds to support public art

which is accessible, has aesthetic qualities, reflects the values and beliefs of the commu-nity and celebrates our rich heritage.

The Games has ear-marked $2,000 of their donation for the pur-pose of initiating the creation of a perma-nent commemorative public art project rec-ognizing the Mission 2014 BC Winter Games.

labelled as a landmark in efforts to address mental health con-cerns in children. Five years later, a follow-up report was issued called “Promises kept, Miles to Go.” That title summed up the report’s diverse conclusions.

That 2008 report found that while advances had been

made, “the overall child and youth mental health service system is clearly inadequate in many respects.”

Since then, British Columbia’s Represen-tative for Children and Youth, Mary Ellen Tur-pel-Lafond, has repeat-edly told the govern-ment that the men-tal health system for children is failing and requires significant

improvement.And last year, a team

headed by SFU profes-sor Charlotte Waddell delivered a strong call to action in a report pre-pared for the Ministry of Child and Family Devel-opment (MCFD).

Families face “stark service shortfalls,” and only one-third of chil-dren who need help get it, Waddell and her team wrote.

“Mental disorders are arguably the leading health problems that Canadian children and youth face from infancy onwards,” the report

concluded. “These shortfalls would not be to lerated for physi-cal health problems in young p e o p l e , such as c a n c e r or diabe-tes, and should no longer be to lerated for mental health problems.”

That report rec-ommended tripling investments in evi-dence-based treatment

systems and prevention programs to both treat

m e n t a l disorders and reduce their prev-alence in the prov-ince. That s o u n d s expensive, but the B.C. gov-ernment’s c u r r e n t spending

on CYMH is just 0.2 per cent of provincial spending.

In 2008/9 the CYMH budget doubled to $89

million. Since then, the total provincial govern-ment budget has grown by 21 per cent to $45 billion – more than half of which goes to health care – while spending on child and youth mental health has risen by just $4 million, or 4.4 per cent over six years, a figure less than the inflation rate.

The increase in the number of children and youth receiving services means there has been a decrease in per-child funding.

The $93 million allo-cated to CYMH services

last year was less than half of what the govern-ment spent on Commu-nity, Sport and Cultural Development. It’s also less than seven per cent of the province’s total spending on mental health and substance use services.

The 2015/16 budget saw total government spending rise by $500 million. Of that, $1.3 million went into CYMH services.

The lack of spending growth can be seen in staffing levels, with the

ANNOUNCEMENT

number of psychiatrists and nurse clinicians employed by CYMH declining over the last seven years.

In 2008, the province employed 59 front-line nurses and seven super-vising nurses, according to numbers provided by the MCFD.

By 2015, the number of front-line nurses had dropped to 42, although the number of supervi-sors had risen to 10.

The number of front-line psychologists declined from 37 to 33 over the same seven years, while the number of supervising psychol-ogists rose from six to eight.

In response to a series of questions about changing staffing levels, a government spokes-person said the num-ber of front-line staff employed by CYMH has increased by two per cent, from 442 to 453.

Most of those are social program officers who provide services such as intake, assess-ment, diagnosis, treat-ment and crisis inter-vention for children. Such officers make con-siderably less money than psychologists.

After repeated requests for an inter-view with MCFD min-ister Stephanie Cadieux over the course of sev-eral weeks, The Record was informed the minis-ter was unavailable.

MCFD communication staff did provide written statements to a series of questions regarding child and youth mental health.

The statements, attributed to the min-ister, acknowledge that more B.C. children are facing mental health challenges. Asked if child and youth men-tal health is a priority, the statements point to the $1.3-million rise in CYMH funding as evi-dence that the govern-ment is “committed to serving and support-ing children and youth with mental health and/or substance use chal-lenges and their fami-lies.”

They also pointed out that ministry of health spending on mental health and substance issues has increased by

63 per cent since 2000, although the majority of those services are tar-geted at adults.

The ministry added: “Is there more to do? Yes, there is always more we’d like to do. And when budget allows, we will continue to look at areas where an increased investment will make the most impact.”

The ministry also cited several improvements to the system as evidence

of progress, including online tools to help fam-ilies find information on services, and a partner-ship with the Canadian Mental Health Associa-tion (CMHA) to deliver “an early intervention telephone-based coach-ing program to support families.”

The ministry also implemented a more efficient intake process in 20 communities. After determining wait times had been reduced “from

days to hours,” the pro-cess will be rolled out province-wide.

And the ministry recently promised more money for Families Organized for Recogni-tion and Care Equality (FORCE), a group that works to support fam-ilies.

May 2015A monthly guide to events, resources and services for Mission Seniors

June will begin with a bang as the annual Seniors Week festivities begin in Mission.

June 1-7 is Seniors Week in B.C. and there is a plethora of activities and events

planned to commemorate the occasion.Kicking of the week of fun is the fifth

annual Ice Cream Social.The Ice

Cream

Social, held at Chartwell Carrington House (32679 7th Ave.), takes place on June 1 and runs from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Last year more than 100 people came out to socialize, dance and enjoy some cool, refreshing treats.

“We do this every year. Seniors from all over the community are welcome to come out to this free event,” said Karen Reed, sales consultant for Chartwell Carrington House.

She said those who attend have a “fantastic” time.

“This is one of the biggest events for seniors week. The positive feedback is one of the reasons we keep doing it.”

Reed called the event a good time and said the building is always packed. Because of that, organizers had considered holding

this year’s social outside, but decided to keep it indoors for at least one

more year.Christine Houghton, the

lifestyle and program manager at the facility called the social a “great time.”

“It’s a chance to socialize, listen to music and dance,” she said.

The event isn’t just for seniors as families are also invited to attend.

For more seniors week activities, see page 2.

INTRODUCTION: Albert Richard Wells was born on October 16, 1915. Born on a “stump ranch” homestead in the Venables Valley (10 miles outside of Ashcroft, BC). After a long and busy life, including serving in the Second World War, Albert eventually decided to retire in the Fraser Valley along with his wife Dorothy.

SERVICE: During the Second World War, Albert became skilled in infantry and military bridge production, and ultimately found himself assigned to the 6th Field Company of Royal Canadian Engineers after a year and a half. It was with the 6th that Albert landed on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day in 1944. Dorothy remained in Sardis, working at the post office, and waited for Albert to return.

RETIREMENT: Albert and Dorothy made the move to Chartwell Cedarbrooke in Mission in November 2013. Albert said that over his career, he has learned that everyone is a customer and the key is to treat them right. We don’t get anything done by criticizing, and it’s more effective and proactive to present alternatives and actions to issues that arise professionally and in day to day life.

Networking, he says, is important, and his success is due, largely, to acquiring a diverse skill-set, having great contacts, and working with so many different and impacting people over a lifetime.

“Everyone is a customer and the key is to treat them right.”

As a denturist I work with patients every day who have well-fitting upper dentures but their lower dentures are loose. This is very frustrat-ing and often painful as food gets trapped under a lower denture and the denture lifts out of place when the mouth is opened wide. This article reviews three solutions to this problem: dental implants, an exciting new technique called “Fit-Best Dentures” and denture maintenance.

What is the best option to improve the fit of a lower denture?

Dental implants are the most efficient way to secure dentures which allow denture wearers to eat whole foods once again. Depending on the number of implants and design of the dentures it is possible to restore anywhere from 30 to 90 per cent of chewing func-tion. This is an incredi-ble improvement because

with regular dentures you only keep about 10 per cent of chewing forces when compared to nat-ural teeth. At Fischer Denture Clinic we work with a team of dedicated dentists who share our passion of providing excellent dentures over implants.

What if dental implants are not an option for me? Can I do anything else besides using denture glue to secure my lower denture?

At Fischer Denture Clinic we are excited to offer “Fit-Best Dentures” for those patients who are not able to have dental implants. This new way of making dentures greatly improves the quality of life for denture wearers. In order to learn more about these new dentures let me share some dental history with you first.

The way dentures are made hasn’t greatly changed for the past 45 years. Dr. Boucher intro-

duced his technique in 1970 which is still widely taught in dental schools today. The upper denture functions q u i t e well as suction is achieved through the upper p a l a t e . S u c t i o n on the l o w e r denture is usually not pos-sible due to the horse shoe shape of the denture as well as tongue and jaw movements while eating and talking.

What are Fit-Best Den-tures?

“Fit-Best Dentures” are a revolutionary new way of making dentures which incorporate techniques developed by a Japanese prosthodontist. Strict adherence to these new techniques make it possi-

ble to capture the unique-ness of each patient’s oral anatomy, thus giving us the ability of achiev-

ing suc-tion-ef-f e c t i v e l o w e r dentures for you. A seal is created a r o u n d t h e e n t i r e border of the lower j a w , w h i c h reduces

lifting up of the denture when speaking and eat-ing. We have accom-plished wonderful results for our patients who are very delighted with the fit, function and natural appearance of their new “Fit-Best Dentures”.

Markus Fischer, regis-tered denturist at Fischer Denture Clinic, is the first Canadian denturist who has been trained in these

techniques in Japan. We invite you to visit our clinic to learn more and see if you are a candidate for “Fit-Best Dentures”.

What can be done to ensure that dentures fit well?

Regular check-ups and maintenance are crucial to ensure that complete and partial dentures function as well as pos-sible. Since bone loss is very gradual it is crucial that dentures are relined regularly, about every two years, to compensate for jaw bone shrinkage and to ensure that the chew-ing forces are evenly dis-tributed over the entire jaw bone. A soft liner in a complete lower denture also cushions and lessens the chewing forces. A poor fitting denture places uneven forces on the jaw and may cause accelerated bone shrink-age.

Dentures need to be replaced on a regular basis to restore proper chewing function and to

rebuild facial appearanceto compensate for lowerjaw shrinkage. Most den-tal insurance plans allownew dentures every fiveyears. Why wait ten oreven 20 years before get-ting a new set of falseteeth? If you wait thislong your lower jaw hasusually shrunk away somuch that your mouthhas sunk in and the lowerjaw has slipped forward.

To sum it up there ishope for you if you havedentures that don’t fitwell. Have them relinedon a regular basis andreplace your completeand partial denturesevery five to seven years.

If you have any ques-tions or would like to dis-cuss your denture needsplease call Fischer Den-ture Clinic at 604-814-0244. Come in for a com-plimentary consultationto ensure that your den-tures fit their best.

Dental ImplantsThis couple has something to smile about. They used to wear dentures, which caused discomfort, an inability to eat many foods and a lack of con dence when it came to smiling and talking.

Now they enjoy the freedom of NobelSmile dental implants, which areas close to natural teeth as you can get. LIKE PUZZLES? THEN YOU’LL LOVE SUDOKU!This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off.

HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle.

Look for the solution in next month’s puzzle section of Living 55 Plus.

SURPRISE SOMEONEWhen was the last time you surprised a friend or family member with something out of the ordinary? Giving someone flowers for no special reason is always a welcome surprise. And, surprising someone doesn’t have to cost a cent. Flowers picked from a field can be just as nice as the ones delivered by a florist. Calling or writing someone you haven’t been in touch with in a long time is another low-cost way to pleasantly surprise someone. In these times of electronic mail and instant messaging, an old-fashioned letter delivered by the mailman can be a wonderful surprise. Baking cookies and bringing them to work to share with co-workers is not only a nice surprise, but also a special way to keep on good terms with those at work. Inviting someone to dinner who wouldn’t otherwise expect it is another good way to surprise someone. And perhaps, the ones who would be most surprised by an act of kindness are not our friends or family, but our enemies.Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you.

Golfers can enjoy a day on a great 18-hole course and help sup-port a good cause – all at the same time.

Mission’s Lanka Jew-els is inviting the pub-lic to join in the fun at its third annual charity golf tournament tak-ing place at the Sand-piper Golf Course in Harrison Mills.

The tournament is set for June 19 and 100 per cent of the pro-ceeds being donated to Canuck Place Chil-dren’s Hospice.

“This is a great com-munity that can sup-port many causes,” said Ken Selvaraja, owner of Lanka Jew-els.

He said the tourna-ment is “our way, my staff, to help the com-munity, as a team.”

It allows them to give back to the community and gives the commu-nity a chance to sup-port a great charitable organization.

It is also a way to promote Mission itself and people can come and see what the com-munity has to offer, said Selvaraja.

“This community doesn’t sit back and wait for things to hap-pen, we jump in to help,” he added.

If you don’t enjoy golfing, there are other ways to support the event. Selvaraja said products and services are still needed for the silent auction and those who donate can receive tax receipts from Canuck Place.

The event takes place June 19 with reg-istration at noon and a shotgun start at 1 p.m.

The entry cost is $165 for the green fee with shared cart, on-course hot dog and drink fol-lowed by a meet and greet at 6 p.m., buf-fet dinner at 6:30 p.m. plus a silent auction and much more.

To register visit Lanka Jewels at #326 – 32555 London Avenue, Mission (The Junction) or contact Naomi at 604-826-5766, or go online at lankajewels.ca.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING

Mission’s Albert Wells is now a Knight of the National Order of the Legion of Honour.

The 99-year-old, Sec-ond World War veteran received the honour from the Government of the Republic of France.

Last Thursday, at Chartwell Cedarbrooke Retirement Residence, Wells’ friends and fam-ily came out to celebrate the honour.

Dignitaries represent-ing all three levels of government came out to pay their respects.

Wells was born on October 16, 1915 in the Venables Valley (10 miles outside of Ashcroft).

He worked in con-struction – building bridges – and the lumber industry. He met his wife Dorothy while working in Colemont.

During the war, he was initially posted in Vernon, where he com-pleted basic training. It was discovered by high-er-ups that he had expe-rience and knowledge

of safety, mine rescue, blasting and timbering, so he was assigned to the Engineering division in Sardis.

Wells became skilled in infantry and military bridge production, and ultimately found him-self assigned to the 6th Field Company of Royal Canadian Engineers after a year and a half.

It was with the 6th that Wells landed on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day in 1944.

After his service in France, Albert was sent to Belgium, and then onto Holland.

When asked abouthis service medals, Albert says that prior tothe Republic of Franceawarding him Knight-hood, he had a series of “ordinary” service med-als which most Cana-dian vets would likely have. He said he’s not sure why he is receiv-ing this highly esteemed award. He joked that they may have “pulledhis name from a hat.”

Troy LandrevilleSPECIAL TO THE RECORD

Nolin Jutten is a pho-togenic three-year-old boy, with long, wispy

light blonde hair and ocean blue eyes.

He also has many huge and unique chal-lenges. Nolin can’t walk,

talk, eat, hold his head up, or see very well, and has seizures and other health issues, the result of a disorder that has no

known treatment.He has low muscle

tone throughout his body. He cannot grab a toy without letting it go.

He plays with his iPadand toys that he can hit,but even this can be a challenge for him.

He has had two oper-ations, one for his softlarynx which was sofloppy, he could barelybreathe, and the otherfor a feeding tube thatgoes directly into his stomach since he hada hard time swallowing.

Nolin is constantly getting acid reflux andoften projectile vomits. It is easy for him to aspi-rate, and then develop alot of mucous, which heagain chokes on.

“We have had to do CPR on him a few times and almost lost him,” said his mom DarleneSchopman, who callsMission home withNolin and husband Frank Jutten.

“In similar disordersthere is not a very high life expectancy. Thathaving said, since Nolinis the only one knownin the world to havethis, we really don’thave a prognosis, andhope for improvementsin the future with new medications, and treat-ments,” Darlene added.

“For now it is consid-ered a palliative condi-tion. We hope that with the current researchbeing done for this disorder will not onlybe able to help Nolin, but also children in thefuture who may get thisgenetic disorder.”

Nolin’s challengesare complex as all bodysystems are affected bythis disorder, it affects his cells, tissues, brain, kidneys, heart, larynx, trachea, intestines, bowel, and muscles.

On June 6, Frank and Darlene are hosting a fundraiser for their sonat the Best Western ball-room in Mission.

Proceeds will gotowards the many extracosts involved in car-ing for Nolin. There will be a full course buffetdinner and dance withlive music by a six-piecetraditional New-Orle-ans-style jazz band andlots more.

Tickets to the semi-formal gala are $50 each and can be purchased at Schuh Boutik in Mission,Zena’s Gluten Free Bak-ery in Maple Ridge andHOFA Art Supplies in Abbotsford or by email-ing [email protected].

Way back in 1966, Sunrise Toyota sold its’ fi rst-ever new Toyota

vehicle. As a matter of fact, we sold less than 25 Toyota vehicles in

our fi rst full year as your “Hometown Toyota Dealer”. Back then, our

vehicle line-up only consisted of 4 choices, all very basic vehicles that

provided cost effi cient and reliable transportation.

Fast forward some 49 years and we’ve changed... a lot!

Our line-up now consists of 18 different models, including cars,

trucks, vans, SUV’s and the world’s best-selling hybrid vehicles.

And over those many years, we’ve also become the largest vehicle

manufacturer in the world.

And while we continue to grow to meet the needs of our

customers, the way we do business, hasn’t. We’re still the same,

family-owned, locally-run, Sunrise Toyota that we’ve always been -

Phoenix, AZ – Sheesh, Just what we need, another crossover vehicle.Well, at least that was my thought when Mazda invited me to drive its new com-pact CX-3 in the desert. One roll of the eyeballs later, after read-ing the line about it being an ‘exciting new urban crossover’ and my thoughts turned to sun and heat.Things didn’t start well in the pre-drive presentation at the exotic Camelback Mountain Resort when an earnest man from Mazda showed a video of how the CX-3 outperformed its key rivals – the new Honda HRV and a Subaru Forester – in taking off from a snow-covered hillside road. Some chance of us putting that boast to the test in the sizzling desert. Then the presenter moonwalked around the stage to demonstrate how we sub-consciously adjust our gait when we feel an icy surface beneath our feet. That’s what the CX-3’s all-wheel drive system does in milli-seconds, before deciding how much power to dispatch to each wheel in order to gain traction. Artificial Intelligence is truly here. First sight of the CX-3 dispelled some of my early wariness. It’s not often I say this, but this is one hand-some little vehicle from that little Japanese company that could and does regularly outshine in design the products of its giant rivals. This is not just a shrunken CX-5 or a Mazda3 on steroids, though there clear fa-milial similarities with the former. It’s positively sporty looking and appears capable of springing forward at pace on green.

Looks can be deceiving. The Skyactiv-G 2.0-litre, 146-horsepower four-cylin-der engine is not going to enable the burning of rubber, even on a steep, downward incline. Paddle shifters in the GT edition and pushing the efficient six-speed automatic transmission into Sport mode can further the sporty illusion. However, the CX-3 is not designed to be a rally car. It does get up to speed and it performs more than adequate-ly in passing on the highway. It is a pleasure to drive in desert or town, so I guess that does make it truly an urban crossover, as described. The road holding and handling abilities in the twisties do allow one to fantasize about the track. If you really must. My co-driver Mark Richardson frequent-ly stops to take photos. Once, while tire deep in gravel, a broad grin appeared. We had found our desert snow.“Morgy, turn the wheel and gun it!” he yelled, quickly retreating to avoid pock marking of his visage. Not one nearby cactus was harmed in

our rigorous pedal-to-the-metal test. The A.I. kicked in and it pulled away smoothly with neither a judder nor a slip. Later, while Mark was reliving his boy racer youth at the wheel, flipping between the modes, I took a longer look and listen at the interior. Yes, listen. While Mark gunned the engine, it was pretty quiet in the cabin. In addition, the added height offered that commanding view of the road seemingly so desired by many drivers. It’s listed as a five-seater but it’s not if all occupants

are adults and the journey, or more likely commute, is long. It’s essentially a car for a couple and maybe one genetic unit but once that family grows then the CX-5 will appear on the family shopping list. That said, it’s a comfy ride in all seating positions. The rear cargo area is wonderful with rear seats flat-tened but limited otherwise. It’s probably fine –though for this car’s intended use and perfectly adequate for the weekly Big Shop.“Upscale” is a word rarely used when describing the fit, finish and looks of a compact car’s interior but it fits here. The lines flow pleasingly throughout and the use of red and metallic accents coupled with upmarket stitching is simply classy. The basic ingredients aren’t so basic even in the base model! – Standard equipment includes cloth seats, split-folding rear bench, push-button start, rear view camera and Mazda Connect infotainment system. The more deluxe models add nicer materials, offering premium safety and audio technology. The Front Wheel Drive version could be a good urban choice but I think Canadians will opt for the AWD CX-3. The fuel economy numbers are not dramatically different between the two options – 7.6 L/100km (FWD) 8.1 L/100km (AWD), combined city/highway.The CX-3 should arrive in local dealerships any day now. Prices have just been released. The base GX FWD starts at $20,695, the AWD version adds two grand to the sticker price, and that is also the base price for the GS. The GT starts at a hefty $28,995 and rises to $30,495. Take a long look at the GS versions.

In 2007, Jeep introduced a new longer wheelbase, 4-door version of its iconic “Wrangler” utility vehicle that it called “Wrangler Unlimited”.

The newly stretched body not only allows Wrangler Unlimited to tote more people and/or stuff around, the rear seat is mounted ahead of the rear axle, which gives rear passengers a less bumpy ride. When the seats

are folded, they present a completely flat extended cargo floor and 2,353-litres of storage space.Fast-forward to the 2011 model year and Wrangler Unlimited may still look the same on the outside but it came with an all-new interior. Heated seats, climate control, new audio inputs, Bluetooth connectivity, power-heated side mirrors and a 115-volt electrical outlet, make roughing it outdoors just a tad more comfortable.Wrangler Unlimited is the only four-door convertible currently on the market and its standard Sunrider soft top has a clever sunroof feature, in addition to a full top-down position. Classic Jeep features include its round headlights, a flat fold-down windshield, exposed door hinges and doors that are easy to remove and available in both full or half frame. Expect gas consumption at 15.6/11.8 L/100 km (city/highway - new five-cycle rating) with the automatic transmission. So, to provide its wilderness-wandering customers the extended driving range they expect, Jeep fits an Unlimited with an extra large (85-litre) gas tank. The 2012 Wrangler Unlimited got a new 3.6 litre V6 engine and a 5-speed automatic transmission. Power output and fuel economy, however, are both roughly the same as the 3.8 litre V6 / four-speed automatic combo they replaced.
