Greetings al-Barran,
After reminiscing on such a wonderful
Estrella our days are once again brightened
by knowing that the summer will be just as
magnificent as the winter and spring. We
would like to thank all of the individuals
who helped to make Estrella War a success
for our Barony, our Kingdom, and
ourselves. A very special thank you goes to
Master Otto Schwarz Herz, who once again
made the long journey to Estrella War to
see that our possessions arrived safely on
the War Wagon and returned home just the
same. Without Master Otto our Barony
would be lessened and our army would
surely suffer.
March brought strong winds to our
kingdom and with those winds a new set of
Heirs for the Outlands was sought and
found. We send our congratulations to His
Royal Highness Kolgrimr and Her Royal
Highness Danielle. We look forward to Their
Reign, and welcoming them to al-Barran for
Grand Outlandish.
April was another notable month for our
Barony, and once again we were able to
watch Mistress Elisée de Calais shine and
promote our barony at the Albuquerque
Renaissance Faire. Thank you to Mistress
Elisée and all of the other volunteers from
al-Barran and beyond who helped to make
that event a success.
Looking forward we are most delighted to
travel to the Shire of Aarquelle to witness
the Coronation of HRH Kolgrimr and HRH
Danielle and also to celebrate the
remarkable reign of Their Majesties Béla
and Anna. We hope that many of you will
join us on this journey and that al-Barran
can show her support to what is sure to be
another wonderful Crown.
Shortly after Coronation al-Barran will host
Grand Outlandish! We could not be more
excited for what Master Otto and his crew
have planned for this event, and we send
our thanks in advance to him and his team
for all of their hard work. Along with our
traditional Friday tournaments we are most
excited to attend a Hafla, Bardic, Auction
Dinner, and many other fantastic activities
and classes over the weekend.
The Society will celebrate its 50th year this
June (17th -27th) in the Middle Kingdom! We
are most delighted to be able to voyage to
lands so far from home to rejoice in the
wonder that is the SCA. We hope that many
of you will choose to make to journey with
us, and spend your hours away from al-
Barran with us and other dear friends. al-
Barran will be camping with the Outlands
group at the request and invitation of Their
Royal Highnesses Kolgrimr and Danielle. If
you would choose to camp with al-Barran
in the Outlands encampment, please let us
know so we may coordinate al-Barran’s
space with Mistress Anne Bigod and
Mistress Matilda de Seton of Caer Galen.

We are overjoyed to once again host Nock
on Wood this summer! Our archery
community is currently preparing a
brilliant event for all to enjoy. Do join us on
July 30th at Oak Flats for a day of archery
and much fun!
At Their Majesties Crown Tournament, we
asked permission to retire as the coronet of
al-Barran this summer. The task of
appointing our replacement(s) has been
given to Their Heirs Kolgrimr and Danielle.
After counsel with the Crown Prince and
Princess it has been decided that the Heirs
will accept letters of intent for the Coronet
of al-Barran until the 30th of April. After the
candidates have been selected and
informed, Their Highnesses will announce
the names of those individuals who put
their names forth. al-Barran will hold a
polling on the Sunday of Grand Outlandish
for all who wish to have their opinions
known to the Crown, and Their Royal
Highnesses will decide the future Coronet
of al-Barran and announce it to the
populace when they deem appropriate. The
investiture of the new Coronet will take
place at al-Barran Champions on
September 24th.
Although we are saddened by our decision
to retire, we cannot help but be grateful for
the opportunity you all have given us to
serve you and for the wonderful summer we
are privileged to spend with you before we
step down.

From the Seneschal: Mistress Ymanya Murray
Warmest greetings to you all this windy and outlandish spring!
Much like the weather, our activities the last few months have come in some incredible gusts. I'll start with Estrella
and commend the remarkable group of folks who attended and worked so that others might enjoy the event. I haven't
gotten all of the names of our volunteers, but I have it on good authority that both the list and the number of total hours are huge. Many thanks to Countess Slaine inghean Ui Sheanain
for organizing land and volunteers and to Master Adam Stedefast who organized the Watch. Thanks to THL Cerydwen
de Gyrlyngton for making the green chile stew for Guido Court and to THL Sáerlaith inghean Robeaird and Lord Alexander of Lancaster for preparation and clean up on site.
Many, many thanks to Master Otto Schwarz Herz for hauling the war wagon. His service made it possible for many to attend Estrella. In addition to those good folks, I would also
offer congratulations and word fame to those honored by Their Majesties: Her Excellency Sabiha was granted an
Argent Fleece, Sir Ælric Kyrri was elevated to the Order of
7
the Laurel, Master Béla Bagatur was admitted to the Legion of Gallantry, Sir Fierren Greenholm was awarded an Argent Hart, and Lord Gilbert le Verrat received his Stag's Blood.
In March, al-Barranians attended Crown Tourney in the Citadel (continuing in the windy
theme). Several of our warriors vied in the list and all made a wonderful showing. Best wishes for a great reign to Their Royal Highnesses Kolgrimr and Danielle. Also that weekend, Sir Tancred d'Avignon and Master Otto organized a rapier demo at the Shamrock Festival. Kudos
to them and to the fencers who attended and represented our illustrious rapier community. At fighter practice the week after Crown Tourney, Bardolf and Sabiha, our beloved Baron and
Baroness, announced their intention to step down late in the summer. Letters of intent were due at the end of April. We await word from Their Highnesses regarding those who have put
themselves forward; the polling will be held Sunday at Outlandish. Keep an eye out for information on the exact time and location.
The first weekend of April several
members of the barony traveled to distant Atenveldt for the inaugural Known World Middle Eastern Drum
and Dance Symposium and Middle East Feast. Two of our own taught at the event. Her Excellency Sabiha
taught a class on Persian triangle hats and Lady Gerlin von
Tiesenhausen taught the history and application of henna. Look for an article based on Her Excellency's
class later in this newsletter.
After that, we turned south to
St. Golias for Kingdom Arts and Sciences. al-Barranian artisans
attended, both to enter and to judge the competition. There, Duchess Cecilia Mowebray was
made a Flower of the Outlands, Mistress Melodia Shaw was
elevated to the Order of the Pelican, and Lady Rhiannon O’Connemara was awarded a
Stag's Heart (we even have a photograph of our talented photographer receiving it!), and
Lady Cassia bint Abdullah was awarded an Argent Hart.
We have just finished our fourth year participating in the
8
Albuquerque Renaissance Fair. A thousand thanks to Mistress Elisée de Calais for anchoring this endeavor yet again. As always she and her superb team made everything seamless and
helped create the perfect atmosphere.
Grand Outlandish is rapidly approaching and Master Otto and his team are in the midst of planning a truly Grand event. There will be another clean up with mandatory coordinators meeting on the 7th of May. Volunteers are most welcome, so please contact Master Otto and
help out! Also, Nock on Wood is scheduled for July 30. Her Excellency has some great shoots in mind, watch for more information on that shortly.
A handful of our populace is planning to make the trek to SCA 50th Year in June, talk with their Excellencies if you'd like to make the trip with them. al-Barran was given the
opportunity to place a page in the commemorative booklet that the event is publishing. To represent the story of al-Barran, a history was composed by Sir Rowland de
Grey of Lincolnshire with photos from Duchess Madigan of Kandahar, Count
Darius of Jaxartes, and Lady Bree of Caer Galen. Thanks to all of them for their contributions to the project! The
booklet will be available online via the 50th Year page later in the year, but a representation of the page is included in
this issue so that you all can see it before it hits the presses for the event!
Thank you to everyone who has worked so hard, and congratulations to all of
our amazing populace who have been recognized in the last few months!
From the Reeve: Sir Gottfried von Zollern
The barony is doing well. Grand Outlandish
expenditures have started to be paid out, leaving the barony with just over $16,000.00 in the bank. This is still 7%
above where we were at this time last year, and the Albuquerque Renaissance Faire
and Grand Outlandish revenues will bolster the numbers. The Baronial Travel Fund is quite low at $30.00. There are
several fundraising opportunities at Grand Outlandish, including a Non-basket Basket
auction organized by Countess Slaine, a
roving rapier tournament, a gambling
competition and THL Bronwen Blackwell is auctioning a dinner. I will be sponsoring a bake sale and tournament this summer, so
keep an eye out for more information on those.
I will be stepping down at Grand Outlandish, and Lord Edric Capellarius will
be taking over. I will stay on as deputy for a while, but I know the Barony will be well
taken care of in Edric's hands.

From the Chatelaine: Sir Tancred d'Avignon Over Crown Tourney weekend, there was a
fencing demo at the Shamrock festival. I
would like to thank Sir Tancred and Master
Otto Schwarz Herz for organizing our
participation. Thanks also to the six
warriors who came out to highlight the
rapier community of al-Barran. Sir Tancred
reports that he hosts Newcomers and
Hospitality meetings at his
home on Wednesdays, with
many newcomers attending
and learning about the various aspects of
our group. He also hosted a potluck this
past month which was well received.
Ymanya Murray
From the Minister of Arts & Sciences: THL Cerydwen de Gyrlyngton
Greetings! There was an awesome turnout at the Kingdom
A&S Competition! Many of our fine artisans presented
wonderful works of art and the competition was fierce!
Members of our barony made a fine showing! In preparation
of the event, Mistress Monika von Zell and THL Geoffrey fitz
Robert held a documentation workshop in the park during
fighter practice. They fielded many questions and offered
loads of advice and hints to help future contestants to get
prepared for both kingdom and baronial competitions.
Thank you to the both of you!
With the months turning warmer, I would like to bring back
'Arts in the Park'. The Erna Ferguson Library classroom is
booked well into the summer so I will see if I can jump on
the schedule when the weather turns a bit chilly. If you
would like to present a class, or have a desire to see a class
presented, please contact me and let's get it planned!
The largess coordinator for Their Royal
Highnesses has requested that a missive
go out regarding largess for Their
upcoming reign. There is an immediate
need for largess as TRHs would like to
present gifts while they are traveling
before coronation and during their reign.
Please either contact THL Hannah de
Ávila (the largess coordinator) or myself
and plans will be made.
Thank you for all that you do to keep the
Arts alive in our world!

From the Web Minister: THL Marc Antoine de la Rue
Hello, al-Barran!!!
With the recent officer changeovers, we are
working to update the information available on the Baronial website. As always, if there is anything that you believe would improve
the site, please let me know.
At the request of the Kingdom Chatelaine, all references to "Hospitaller" on the website have been changed to "Chatelaine".
As a new project, we will be attempting to
transfer past issues of the Shaft into electronic format and making them
available on the website. If any member of the populace has older issues that they would allow us to borrow, please contact
me. They will be treated with the utmost care and returned promptly to their owner.
From the Knight Marshal: Sir Gregor von Münchhausen
Fighter practices continue to be well attended.
There were no injuries this quarter.
From the Scorpion Pursuivant: THL
Sáerlaith inghean Robeaird
In the month of March, I received two new name and device submissions and one resubmission for a
device. They were sent to Kingdom for review and appeared on the April Letter of Presentation. They are currently under review for submission to Laurel
of Arms. In April the first Southern Outlands Commentary meeting was held (or the first in a VERY
long time) at the house of THL Saerlaith inghean Robeaird. Two heralds were in attendance: Saerlaith and Sir Rowland de Gray of Lincolnshire. We are hoping to hold one a quarter in
different locations within the Southern Outlands.
From the Captain of Archers: THL Rowan
Due to ice, snow, mud, and freezing temperatures, several practices had to be
cancelled during the beginning weeks of the year. On January 30th five archers attended a practice at Hit or Miss Archery. Since the
middle of February, 7-10 archers have attended practice each week. Royal Rounds
were completed February 13th, February 20th, and March 5th. Adult and minor
waivers have been signed as required. I have informed TE and the seneschal of my
intention to step down at Grand Outlandish. Letters of Intent for the next Captain of Archers should be sent to me,
Their Excellencies, Mistress Ymanya and the Kingdom Archer General by May 16th,
2015. I would like to thank everyone for giving me this wonderful opportunity to serve the Barony.
11
From the Rapier Marshal: Master Otto Schwarz Herz
Ah, spring has sprung and the days in al-
Barran are ripe for playing with sword on
Sundays (and other days, too). New folks
are arriving at the practice park and are
eager to learn, so be sure and greet them
and assist them anyway you can. Some of
the new fighters got their first glimpse of
what we do at the demo at the Shamrock
Festival. So, I thank all those who help in
making the demo a success. Remember
that we are all ambassadors for the SCA
and we represent the best of the middle
ages. Be cheerful and courteous to all those
you meet.
The camping season is just around the
corner and events like Grand Outlandish
give us opportunity to put our sword to
good use. If you haven’t already signed up
to help or made it out to a GO site clean-
up, please do so at your next opportunity.
The numbers of those that are participating
in Cut and Thrust continue to grow. Come
and see what all the fuss is about.
From the Scribe: THL Elise porteresse d’yaue
I begin with a big thank you to Baroness Bianca de Vittoria, THL Cerydwen de Gyrlyngton, and Lady Gerlin von Tiesenhausen for
their efforts in getting the Outlandish invitations sent out in record time. THL Cerydwen also provided blank scrolls for Their Excellencies to take to War.
Scrolls were given to participants in the “Fight-a-Knight” tournament at the Albuquerque Renaissance Faire. Many of the
parents and young combatants told me how much they enjoyed the event and expressed their appreciation of these scrolls. The
following scribes battled wind, rain, and excited children to put names on the scrolls: Baroness Sabiha, Mistress Monika von Zell, Countess Anne Aliz de Bâle, Master Otto Schwarz Herz,
Mistress Dáirine inghean Ghriogair, Don Michael M'Quilline, Lady Hrefna Cyrredes dohtor, Lady Gerlin, and Annabelle. Your
service to the community of Albuquerque brings glory to al-Barran and the dream we all love.
A huge thank you to Mistress Ymanya, Baroness Bianca, THL Cerydwen, and Lady Gerlin for stepping up and helping with assignments for Outlandish! Speaking of Outlandish, that is where I will be stepping down.
Thank you, scribes, for all that you do. It has been a huge honor serving with each and every
one of you.
Count Darius of Jaxartes &
a young warrior.

2016 Albuquerque Renaissance Faire: Words from the Stewards
A hale and hearty good greeting to all!
April 30th found heraldic banners all a-
flutter in the spring breezes at the
Albuquerque Renaissance Faire. A
grand portion of the City visited the
Faire this year, which could not
happen without the support and hard
work of all the volunteers from the
Barony of al-Barran and friends.
Huge thanks to the Company of Saint
Martin for coordinating the fighting
demonstrations and Fight a Knight.
Thank you to THL Cerydwen de
Gyrlyngton for coordinating (for the
fourth year!) the Living History exhibits
in the Museum. My gratitude to all the fighters, bards, archers, drummers, dancers,
hospitallers, artists, and myriad other volunteers – you made people smile, inspired them,
charmed them, intrigued them, and taught them something new. We love you all.
Thank you to those who served lunch, and to
al-Barran’s gracious Baron Bardolf and
Baroness Sabiha who so generously opened
their larder to feed the volunteers, and lent
use of Baronial assets to bring the Middle
Ages to our community.
To all who travelled from beyond the border
of al-Barran to volunteer your time and talent
to the Faire: thank you.
To our King and Queen of the Faire, Duke
Walrick de Blakeney & Duchess Cecilia
Mowebray, you were awesome. I hope you
had fun! Your time and effort was most
appreciated.
Thank you, Mistress Melodia Shaw, for your
support and your attendance to meetings
with the City this year, both with and without
me, and for keeping the ball (and me) rolling.
Their Excellencies Bardolf & Sabiha at the 2016 Albuquerque Renaissance Faire. Photo by Lady Rhiannon O’Connemara.
13
THL Sáerlaith inghean Robeaird, your echo of
social media posts to amplify Ren Faire messages
was most appreciated.
It has been a blast these past four years as
stewards and SCA volunteer liaisons. The
Cultural Events team at the City of Albuquerque is
truly great to work with. This experience has
taught us both so many things, secured so many
good memories, and a piece of our hearts will
always remain with the Albuquerque Renaissance
Faire. It is time, however, for someone else to take
up this task and have as much fun with it as we
did. To that person, we offer our very best in this
endeavor.
Warmest regards,
Mistress Elisée de Calais Master Otto Schwarz Herz

What and where was Safavid
Persia: The Safavid Dynasty
controlled Persia from 1501 to the
early 1700’s. Their empire included
modern Iran, Azerbaijan, Bahrain
and Armenia, Georgia, the North
Caucasus, Iraq, Kuwait, Afghanistan
and to some extent, parts of Turkey,
Syria, Pakistan, Turkmenistan and
Uzbekistan.
Safavid Fashion: The Persians have
long been known for their
outstanding textiles and vibrant
color choices. We associate Safavid
Persian dress with long, luxurious
robes of silk brocades and velvets,
furs, linens and cottons, but what we
often forget is how they completed
the perfect Persian ensemble through
the use of headpieces.
Headpieces for Safavid women
consisted of many different styles,
mainly using veils (large and small),
braid cases, and diadems. These
headpieces could be secured by silk
ribbons, scarfs, or other small ties
and were occasionally complemented
by a string of pearls draped under the
chin, feathers, or flowers.
Theories of Construction for the
Triangle Hat:
Folded Veil – Large veil, rolled into a
band with a point, and tied at the
back of the head. (See illustration “A
Sitting Woman”)
Folded Veil and Fillet – Small square
veil or handkerchief folded in half to
create a triangle (sometimes framing
the face) and secured with a fillet,
scarf, or ribbon. (See illustration “Girl
Smoking”)

One Piece – Either cut and finished
into shape, or possibly made from a
sturdier material similar to (or quite
possibly) a diadem. (See illustration
“Youthful Lovers”)
Accentuating the Triangle Hat:
Pearls – Tied at the top of the
head or connected directly to
the triangle at (or just behind) the temples with a hook or pin. "It consisted of Thirty-eight
Oriental Pearls, each weighing Twenty-four Carats, all well form’d, of the same Water, and
same Bigness: It is not an Ornament for the Neck, but for
the Face, after the Persian Manner: It is fasten’d at the Temples to the Head-band, or
Fillet, and comes down the
Cheeks, and under the Chin." (Sir John Chardin’s Travels in Persia)
Feathers – Easily tucked into
the fold of the triangle, or secured to a fillet.
Flowers – Used much like feathers.
Veils – Wear several or none at all!

What to Use:
Scraps of silk, linen, cotton (for triangle), let it match your dress, or use it to add
color.
Ribbon, scarfs, leather (for fillet), try using your hip sash too.
Feathers, flowers (for accentuating), Joann’s or Hobby Lobby are great places to start.

There are many extant examples of how heraldry was
used before 1600 that we can recreate for use in the SCA. Below is a list of some of those examples: Escutcheons incorporated into the illustrations in
books to identify those who commissioned them.
o Example: Prayer book of Queen Claude of France, folios 6r, 15v, and 18v;
collection of the Morgan Library and Museum; Tours, ca. 1517
(http://www.themorgan.org/collection/Prayer-Book-of-Claude-de-France)
Escutcheons on printed bookplates that could be pasted into the books to identify their
owners.

o Example: The site of the Victoria and Albert Museum has a print made in 1562
showing a printmaker engraving the copperplate for a heraldic bookplate.
Horse caparisons, either overall or on escutcheons.
o Example of escutcheons: Cod. Pal. germ. 848 (the Manesse Codex), folio 237r;
collection of the University Library Heidelberg; Zürich, 1305
o Example of overall emblazons: BNF Français 2695, folio 45v; collection of the
National Library of France; Provence, around 1460
Surcoats worn by armigers or their heralds, overall or on escutcheons.
