Srihadi Soedarsono is one of Indonesia’s most accomplished master painter.Graduating from the Bandung Institute of Technology in 1959, Srihadi pursued a master’s degree at the Ohio State University where he was immensely influenced by Abstract Expressionism. His artistic practice underwent many changes over the years.

In the earlier years, he followed he Bandung style of Cubism that was characterized by a kaleidoscopic use of colours. Through many experimentations of various artistic styles, Soedarsono eventually found his visual language via a minimalistic visual expression that continues to define him as one of the greatest painters in Indonesia. In time, Soedarsono gained worldwide recognition for his expressionist minimalistic paintings with its bold application of colours. Today, the minimalist visual language of Soedarsono continues to mark him as one of the most celebrated artists in Indonesia.

The subject matter of dancer forms an integral theme to his artistry, defined by the purposeful choice of colour to personify the expressive mood and aura of the subjects.The gist and mood of each dance performance is what the maestro aims to capture and translates on to canvas. To the artist, dance offers a panoramic perspective to the human lives. His fluid portrayals of beautiful dancers embody inner spiritual beauty that connects the visual to the divine.

A skilled colourist, Srihadi’s ability to make use of a limited colour palette transforms the dancers into figures with great vigour and dynamic energy. Throughout his career, he has tirelessly refashioned and reimagined the same subject matter; sometimes making subtle adjustments to the pose, rearranging the composition, varying the proportions or by using different combinations of colours in differing brush strokes and brightness.The reverent corpus of Srihadi Soedarsono’s works unwaveringly continues to define the artistic landscape of Indonesia’s modern art today.

Armed with the philosophy that art should embody inner spiritual beauty, the paintings of Srihadi Sudarsono is a bridge between the external and the internal; a connection between the visual and the spiritual. In a world that is increasingly fast paced, his paintings provide reprieve for the viewer, like a balm for stressed out city dwellers. Srihadi himself talks of "the ongoing interaction between the physical and the non-physical, the mental and the spiritual". This painting of the Javanese landscape, Borobodur, encourages the viewer to abandon the mental mechanisms of the brain by appealing to our sense of beauty. The horizon line is located near the top of the painting, stretching the perspective of the viewer far into the depths of the landscape. The flowing streaks of long grass manifests the invisible movement of the wind. These different painterly elements combine to reveal a tranquil yet mystical landscape. The painting, Spirit of Borobodur expands on the sense of openness that is only found in nature. Elements are kept deliberately minimalistic, to unclutter the perspective. These two paintings exemplify Sirihadi’s signature style of stratifying the canvas with layers of colours, giving the paintings a point of focus by.



Sunaryo’s success in the arts began with a simple incident that happened during his early schooldays. He once left a sabak (similar to a chalkboard) in his class and when he rushed back to retrieve it, he saw a drawing of a landscape behind the door. Awestruck, he was inspired to practice art, making this event one of his most memorable ones. Sunaryo Sutono was born in Banyumas, 1943, known to be one of the most prominent artists in Indonesia that play a significant role in the development of the arts in the country.

He studied art at Bandung Institute of Technology and upon graduation, he started his career as an art teacher at the school until 2008. Appointed as the artistic director for major art events such as; Indonesian pavilion in World Expos Forum 1985 which was held in Japan and Canada, Sunaryo’s capacity as an artist is recognized by many. His public works are present in several cities of Indonesia, among others; Monumen Bandung Lautan Api (Bandung), Monumen Perjuangan Rakyat Jawa Barat (Bandung), Patung Soekarno-Hatta in Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (Jakarta), and Patung Jendral Sudirman (Jakarta).

One of his biggest achievements as an artist is the establishment of his own art space in Selasar Sunaryo Art Space in Bandung which was founded in 1998. In regard to his artistic style, Sunaryo revealed that his signature style is spontaneity. In every creative process, he begins with one main idea that evolves during the execution as he improvises spontaneously. Using a variety of media of printmaking, sculptures, paintings, installation, murals, and urban monuments, he raises issues about spiritual, social, and personal goals. His works also encourage deep pondering on the relationship between humans and nature.

This present lot, Backstage, is one of Sunaryo’s distinctive lyrical paintings that is steeped in tradition, referencing Balinese themes and characters. Sunaryo impressively painted Balinese dancers that seem to be preparing for a traditional Balinese performance called Legong. This performance is believed to have meanings related to religious and historical values. Additionally, Legong is a symbol of the gratitude to the Balinese ancestors who have bequeathed many relics to their heritage. Seen in this present lot, the four standing dancers help each other to spruce up their costumes, while the one sitting on the ground does her make up. Their dark costumes are painted against the red background, making the painting looks alive. Backstage does not only reflect the cultural elegance of Indonesian heritage, but it is also an appreciation towards Indonesia’s culture by representing Balinese dancers in his work.

The art of Indonesian artist Sunaryo is folkloric and steeped in tradition, often referencing Balinese or Javanese themes and characters in them. Born shortly before the birth of independent Indonesia, Sunaryo was unburdened with the political inclinations unlike some of the previous generations of Indonesian artists. Joining up with the Decenta art group, Sunaryo was determined to wrest back the artistic battlegrounds back from the abstract-focused and Western leaning “Bandung school” in the 1970s.

It is during those formative years of experimenting and reclaiming of his artistic tradition that Sunaryo made his name as an authority on Indonesian cultural art. The barong is a mythological creature in Balinese culture, who is constantly locked in an eternal battle with the evil rangda, a reincarnation of a witch. Traces of ink-like lines and gradient reminiscent of Chinese calligraphy can be observed in the golden mane of Barong. Sunaryo’s art speak of the complex relationship between man and nature, and his mystical representation of barong in the present lot emulates golden hope in the darkness ensued by mankind.

Just like the literal meaning of the title, this present lot, Introspection, is an act of directly examining the states or process of one’s own mind, thoughts, and feelings. The eye is the primary focus in this painting, as it is put in the centre of the canvas. The eye is wide open as if it is magnifying its observation of the one’s mental state, while in spiritual context refers to the one’s soul. Stamped a fingerprint around the eye, making it look like a unique identity to oneself that is different from others. With the use of minimal colours palette in this painting, Sunaryo seems to focus on putting a deep meaning over his subject, in which viewer may be encouraged to reflect on themselves.

HAJI WIDAYAT (Indonesian, 1923 - 2002)

Widayat emerged artistically during the post-independence state, a significant period in Indonesia’s post-colonial history where art was celebrated and engaged to construct “a new voice” and aims to distinguish the country’s new identity away from the supremacy of colonial art. He seeks to represent the visuals of daily lives, highlighting the sinister reality of life in the new republic.

The present lot depicts a planar field and groups of children flying kites. The strings of the kites are like leading lines to the top edges of the painting, forming an abstract composition that breaks up the scene into fields of plantations. In this way, viewers are on an elevated viewing perspective dwindling upon the activities happening on the ground, giving a sense of gleefulmood when viewing the painting.

Arie Smit was a Dutch-born painter who was the most influential artist on the Balinese painting scene. He spent most of his time in Bali, painting depictions of the tropical landscapes of the region.
