Early Years Literacy Program

A presentation of primary school education, organization and methods.

Where to start?

From the first day of school, the pupils’ reading skills will be tested.


It is a goal that:

…the pupils get a sense of achievement.

…the pupils feel reading is fun.

…the school secure the pupils functional reading level.

…the pupils develop good written skills from the beginning.

Four key elements


Structured Stations Lessons 1

The lesson begins with a joint session– The tasks are explained.– The learning goal is presented.

The pupils are devided into groups of five or six .

There is always a group leader who takes responsibility for each group.

Structured Stations Lessons 2

The pupils walk quietly to their station. - They spend about 12 minutes at each station.

The teacher gives a signal which the pupils respond to.

- The pupils move to the next station.

The lesson ends after a new joint session. - A summary in plenary


Learning stations 1

The pupils are approximately at the same level.

The groups are flexible, and the pupils change groups as they develop at different speeds.



Learning stations 2

Guided reading. The teacher work with a small group of pupils.


Focus in guided reading stations may be:

How illustrations can support or expand the comprehension of the text

Predict the outcome of the story

Intonation

Interpret the punctuation

Introduce a new kind of text

Who is the author? Interpret actions or

dialogues

ABC – station - the pupils are given tasks

related to the learning of letters.

Creative station - the pupils use their creativity

to illustrate the text, or other tasks...

- the computers are equipped with software to be used according to the learning goals

School Library

The school library is an important element in the program

Our school librarian is a central partner

She finds books in different topics to accommodate the pupils reading level

She helps teachers in selecting books for the classrooms

Reading homework 1

How will the pupils and their parents work with the homework reading?– The pupils have a reading folder with a book where

the parents have to sign a reading card

The reading folders are collected each week

We use reading folders and easy-to-read books

This is a simple method: – reading together– individual reading– talk about the text/ discuss the text– questions from the text


Additional Assistance


Reading Recovery 1

Is an offer within the schools work to differentiate the education, and is given to pupils in 2nd grade who have not profited well from the ordinary reading education.

The lesson follows a strict and structured pattern

The pupil is have several lessons a week during a period of 18 – 20 weeks (four to five lessons every week)

During the lessons, the pupil works with a special education teacher for 20 – 30 minutes each time

They must get a systematically introduction to the program and increased competence in literacy education

In Ringsaker Municipality the expertise is developed in each school and through networking with other schools in our area
