SPLASH 1.0

C1 SPLASH

CITROEN’S C1 is a great example of simplicityin car manufacturing. Citroen makes no bonesabout the fact that this is a city car in a basic, pared down form.

You can see and feel where corners havebeen cut and weight has been shaved to keepthe vehicle economical and affordable butnone of it matters because the C1 does what itneeds to do in an area of the market wherecost is king. It’s hard not to admire the C1’shonesty and in special edition Splash form, thelittle Citroen is at its most disarming.

Citroen actually offers a 1.4-litre dieselengine with the C1 but that hoists the price upby a fair whack. Most buyers will find it best tostick with the feisty little 3-cylinder petrolengine and as luck would have it, this is theonly unit offered with the Splash special edi-tion model.

The 1.0-litre petrol feels more alert andresponsive than the oil-burner anyway andbuzzes about the place emitting a surprisingly

purposeful engine note. You won’t be goingparticularly quickly in a straight line but there’sdefinitely fun to be had in the C1’s hot seat.

The Splash special edition is based on the VTmodel from the standard C1 range but it addsa series of extras. There’s air-conditioningthrown in as standard as well as electric front

windows and remote central locking. TheWhere the C1 scores an almost unbeatablemark is in the field of cost of ownership.

The nippy 1.0i 68hp petrol engine emits lessCO2 than any other petrol powerplant current-ly on sale in the UK, boasting lowered CO2emissions of just 106g/km and a combined-cycle fuel consumption figure of 62.8mpg.

FUEL economy and emissions of planet warm-ing gasses have never been bigger issues formotorists than they are today.

Rather than lusting after bigger and morepotent engines, large sections of the publichave turned their attention in the oppositedirection and are more interested in extractingthe maximum mileage from each tank of fuelthey pump.

This trend is good for the environment, good for our pockets and, if they can success-fully tap into the demand for more frugalvehicles, it can be good for the manufacturerstoo.

Suzuki is one brand which is aiming toattract cost conscious buyers and the 1.0-litreSplash mini MPV will have an important roleto play.

The Splash originally made do with a1.2-litre petrol engine and a 1.3-litrediesel. Now there’s a 1.0-litre petrol toconsider as well. It’s aimed at customerswho care substantially more about keep-ing money in their pockets than the per-formance of their vehicle because priced atjust £500 below the 1.2-litre engine, itgives away 18bhp and 2.4s on the 0-60mph sprint to that unit. Of course, if youreveryday driving consists of battles to and fromwork through the rush hour traffic or rarelytakes you out of the confines of urban streets, you’ll scarcely notice the difference in pacebetween the two units. The 1.3-litre dieselengine’s torque would be more of a miss. Itproduces 190Nm at 1,750rpm where our littlepetrol can only manage 89Nm at 4,800rpmbut you’ll need £2,000 more to step from the68bhp 1.0-litre into one of those.

On the open road, it’s likely that the 1.0-litreengine will be found out a little with its slug-gish 14.7s 0-60mph time and 99mph topspeed but Splash target customers are unlikelyto venture too far from home on a regularbasis.

Space inside is quite generous with the massof headroom adding to the roomy feel. Theboot is pokey but when the rear seats areunoccupied, you can fold them down to makeroom for the shopping.

The 1.0-litre Suzuki Splash is only available inGLS trim with the plusher GLS+ level reservedfor the larger engines. Pricing looks reasonablycompetitive compared to other supermini-based MPVs but there is a fly in the ointment

in the shape of Vauxhall’s Agila which is broad-ly identical to the Splash beneath the surfacebut undercuts it on price. Suzuki will hope thatits generous equipment levels tip the balance.

It’s the bottom line that will tempt buyersinto the entry-level Suzuki Splash. It promisesto be an extremely cheap car to run. It’ll saveyou money over the larger engines in theshowroom, particularly if you remember to getyour haggling hat on. Then there’s the56.5mpg economy, 5mpg better than the 1.2-

litre petrol and only 6mpg behind the dieselwith its much higher list price. Emissions arejust 120g/km which are the same as the dieseland carry big tax advantages while insurancecosts will also put a smile on your face.

The Splash is one of the finest small MPVsout there, offering decent practicality withinthe confines of its small body and proving ahoot to pilot around town. The boot is smalland the ride firm but the build quality, equip-ment levels and lively handling all impress.

TToouugghh gguuyy 44xx44GIRLTALKwith June Neary

THERE’S a lot of talk in the specialistmotoring press about what is andwhat isn’t a ‘proper’ 4x4.

The confusion has sprung from thegrowing penchant among manufac-turers for creating vehicles that displaythe rough and ready looks of an off-roader but have little or no off-roadability.

Some of them don’t even havefour-wheel drive. It can all be a littleconfusing for the humble car buyerbut there are models with which youalways know where you stand andamongst them is Jeep’s Cherokee.THE PRACTICALITIESWith decent ground clearance, aproper low range transfer box, HillDescent Control (with the automaticgearbox option) and a clever Selec-Trac II four-wheel-drive system, theCherokee comes well equipped foroff-road work.

Build quality can best be describedas functional. The American domesticmarket doesn’t seem to place toomuch store on materials quality andthe Cherokee feels built down to aprice.

The plus side of this is that it’s veryrugged and doesn’t take muchrecourse to the manual to establishhow the controls function.

The feel is a good deal more mas-culine than its rather rounded prede-cessor, a car that gained 60 per centof its sales from women. This time

round the target demographic is a lit-tle more hairy of chest.

BEHIND THE WHEELOnly one engine is offered to UK buy-

ers but it’s the most relevant oneavailable to Jeep; a 174bhp 2.8-litrefour-cylinder diesel.

It’s not the most refined powerplant

in the world but it suits the ruggedfeel of the Cherokee very well andleaves you under no illusions that thisis a vehicle that’s not been designed

purely to perambulate outside citycentre shopping arcades. The live rearaxle is also another reminder that theCherokee is built extremely tough. While the ride on road isn’t as com-posed as the most car like compact4x4 models, the Jeep feels better ableto withstand some abuse than any ofits rivals.

VALUE FOR MONEY

The Cherokee is offered only in well-appointed Limited trim, a specificationthat includes features such as leatherseats and a leather-trimmed steeringwheel and gear knob, big alloywheels, stability control and air condi-tioning.

So for your money, you’re getting aserious car with a decent level ofequipment.

COULD I LIVE WITHONE?

If you’re after a compact 4x4 that cancope with being driven off-road, therearen’t too many choices available. TheJeep Cherokee is certainly one of thefew that could hack it and that you’dhave confidence in when the goinggets tough.

It’s also well equipped and reasonablycomposed on the road but there aremore refined and sophisticatedoptions out there.

FACTS

SCENIC 1.4THERE are quite a few key criteriato tick off when selecting a mini-MPV and Renault think they’vegot them all covered.

Safety is the key issue, cus-tomers prioritising crash protectionfor their families and the Scenicboasts a full five-star Euro-NCAPcrash test result.

Next up is practicality, andRenault score here too, with yearsof experience producing this sortof vehicle.

The final driver is running costs. The 1.4-litre version of the latestentry-level Scenic that we examinehere not only wears a distinctlyfriendly sticker price but scores bigin terms of fuel economy, insur-

ance bills and spares costs. No wonder Renault have such

high hopes for this model.The 1.4-litre car’s 100bhp

engine isn’t the most inspiringpowerplant we’ve come acrossbut it does get the job done witha minimum of fuss.

Only if you load the Scenic upto the gunwales will it struggle. Ifyou can afford another £500 orso, those looking for something abit peppier can opt for the 1.6-litre models which offer marginallybetter fuel economy and muchbetter performance figures.

Three trim levels are offered,

starting with the entry-levelAuthentique at £13,945.

Then there’s the well equippedExpression which tacks just over£1,000 onto the price and theDynamique, a car with vaguelysporting pretensions, topping offthe range at up to £15,745.

Each is well equipped and theScenic’s equipment levels need tobe taken into account when pric-ing the car against rivals from Fordand Volkswagen.

Although it may not major onexcitement when it comes tooffering what mini-MPV buyersreally want, the Renault Scenic1.4-litre range looks to have thebases covered.

CHORLEY FIATFiat 500 range (left)

Fiat has latterly built a reputa-tion for having a wide range ofexcellent powerplants, especiallyat the smaller end of the prod-uct portfolio. Indeed, the 1.3-litre 16v Multijet diesel enginefitted to the 500 is so good thatit overshadows the otherwiseexcellent pair of petrol power-plants. Five or six speed manualtransmissions are offered andthe 500 has been designed toreplicate the original car’s nim-ble feel and ability to put asmile on its driver’s face.

There’s such a cheekiness andpersonality to its design thatpeople would have bought thecar even if it was irredeemablyawful in every other respect.

Fiat 500 AbrathFiat’s famous ‘city button’ as

featured in the standard 500models is changed to a sportbutton in the 500 Abarth.Instead of making the steeringlighter, it weights the helm upfor more feel and a sportier dri-ving experience.

Abarth badging is everywherefrom pride of place on the grilleto the rear wings, the 16” alloyswheels, the steering wheel huband the tailgate. Even theengine gets an Abarth scorpioncrawling across it. At the front,a pair of fog lights is set intothe air-intake and these jewel-like additions are mirrored bythe chromed exhausts that pro-trude from the rear diffuser.Side skirts and flared wheelarch-es dominate the flanks alongwith the distinctive Abarth rac-ing stripe decals.Fiat Bravo

It’s easy to forgive the Bravoany minor shortcomings whenyou walk round the car, takingin its beautifully integrateddetailing and elegant propor-tions. Just as the Grande Puntoadded a touch of the exotic tothe supermini class, the Bravodoes the same for cars the nextsize up. The interior feels verywell built. Bright finish plasticslift the cabin and the controlsare easy to figure out withoutrecourse to the manual.Fiat Doblo

Fiat have been beautifyingtheir range of late, taking ascalpel to the excesses of theMultipla, launching the quitestartling Grande Punto and nowgiving the Doblo a nip and tuck.

The rather odd looking frontend has been thoroughlyrevised, Bigger headlamps andwider underbumper intakesgive the Doblo a little presencewithout looking like it’s beentagged by the ugly stick. Thechanges are likely to put theFiat onto the shortlists of manybuyers who previously rejectedit on the grounds that it lookeda little unconventional, there’s achoice of three trim levels –Active, Dynamic and 7-seatFamily.Fiat Grande Punto

Fiat isn’t about to let thisGrande Punto fade into thebackground as a forgotten fash-ion accessory in the superminimarket, hence this useful pack-age of upgrades. The thingsthat matter haven’t changedthough. It still looks great andthe 5-star Euro NCAP rating tes-tifies to the fact that it’s still oneof the safest small cars that it’s

possible to buy.Above the ‘Active’ entry-level,

there’s basically a choicebetween ‘Comfort’ versions(badged ‘Dynamic’ and‘Eleganza’) and ‘Sport’ models(badged ‘GP’ and ‘Sporting’).The GP versions look ideal foryounger drivers who wanted amore aggressive look but needlower insurance premiums. Thisvariant gets unique, sporty (thatword again) interior trim, ‘sports’instruments (argh!), dark-tintedheadlamps, front foglights, arear spoiler and 16-inch alloywheels. They’re pretty sportytoo.Fiat Multipla

The Multipla is great fun todrive. the long wheelbase andthe more rigid body mean thatthe Multipla handles better.Certainly, the direct, beautifully-weighted steering helps, as doesa slick, snappy gearchangemanipulated via a stick protrud-ing from the fascia. And what afascia: with various satellite areasfor the ventilation controls, theair vents and the built-in stereo.Perched on top is a crescent-shaped speedometer incorporat-ing a fuel gauge, warning lights- but no rev counter. There areonly two engines on offer andneither is particularly rapidFiat Panda range

The range starts with the 1.1-litre Active, from where you canthen step up to the 1.2Dynamic. Above this are the 1.2Dynamic AirCon and the 1.2Dynamic SkyDome, effectivelygiving customers the choice ofair conditioning or a vast electricsun roof. The next priciest modelis the 1.3-litre MultiJet Dynamicdiesel, followed by the well-specified 1.2 Eleganza.

Most city car ranges wouldstop there but the Panda line-upfinishes with some very attractive‘boutique’ models.

The 1.2-litre 4x4 even offersall-weather offroad ability, asdoes the Panda Cross. Finallythere’s that sporty 100HP versionwhich features a 1.4-litre engine,a six-speed gearbox, loweredsuspension, all-round disc brakesand a big bagful of fun thrownin.

The upholstery on the seatcovers is completely washablebecause as any parent knows, accidents do happen. The colourscheme is lively with orange air-vent surrounds and special matsfor the foot wells.Fiat Sedici

Fiat’s Sedici compact 4x4 looksa clever package. It’s a CompactSUV (Sport Utility Vehicle), butalso a versatile family hatchbackyou can afford.

Inside, the fascia is attractivelydesigned with some decent andhard wearing materials used. The combination of a raised dri-ving position, height adjustabledriver’s seat, rake-adjustablesteering wheel and deep frontquarterlight windows offer thedriver a commanding drivingposition with good all-round visi-bility.

screen pillars forward is stan-dard Qashqai. Everythingbehind this point has beenmodified in the Qashqai+2.

The wheelbase has beenextended by 135mm and theoverall length has grown by211mm to 4,526mm. To makesure that rear seat occupantsdon’t feel too hemmed in, theroof line has been reprofiled aswell, adding 38mm to thecar’s height. The doors havebeen redesigned and the sidewindows are now bigger, as isthe rear tailgate window, mak-ing the back feel anything butclaustrophobic.

The middle row of seatssplits 40/40/40 and the back-rest reclines to no fewer thannine adjustment positions.

The backrow of seatsis designedfor kids oradults up to1.6m (5ft3ins), theseats fold50/50 andcan be foldedaway simplyby pulling astrap. There’sno need togo throughthe hassle ofremovinghead restsfirst.

When fold-ed down, there’s a mas-sive 500 litresof stowagespace, andthe rear hatchis both widerand has a

lower loadingsill than the standard Qashqaimodel.

There’s even an underfloorstowage area to keep valu-ables out of sight. The sturdylid of this stowage area alsodoubles as a cargo divider toprevent your eggs gettingsquashed by your Irn Bru.

Like the five seat Qashqai, the +2 is available in three dif-ferent trim and equipment ver-sions – the now familiar Visia,Acenta and Tekna levels.

Overall? Well, with a broadrange that encompasses fourengines, three trim levels andthe choice of two or four-wheel drive, it’s hard to seehow Nissan can fail.

COTTONING on to the factthat a host of families existwho want neither a big, bulky4x4 nor a style vacuum thatmost MPV people movers rep-resent, Nissan has brought usthe seven seat Qashqai+2.

)A true ‘crossover’ vehiclewith elements of a number ofgenres, the company hopes it’llcatch on. Don’t bet against it.

There’s one of the widestchoices of engines in the sectorwith two diesels and twopetrol powerplants.

The range kicks off with a1.6-litre 115bhp petrol unitand moves up through 106bhp1.5dCi diesel and 140bhp 2.0-litre petrol units before top-ping-out with the 150bhp 2.0-litre dCi diesel.

Nissan hasn’t skimped whenit comes to transmissionoptions either, the Qashqai+2being suppliedwith five andsix- speedmanual boxes,a six-speedauto optionand even anadvancedConstantlyVariableTransmission(CVT).

The ALL-MODE 4x4 sys-tem is availableon the 2.0-litrevehicles. This isan electronicsystem whichautomaticallyengages four-wheel drivethe moment aloss of tractionis detected. Itoffers moresafety andsecurity inextreme weath-er on-road.

Nissan makes no bones ofthe fact that the Qashqai+2 isanything but an off-roader, cit-ing its lack of ground clear-ance.

What precludes it from tack-ling rutted tracks makes it abetter car on the blacktop, thehunkered down centre of grav-ity giving the Nissan the drivingdynamics of a typical familyhatch.

The Qashqai+2 weighs100kg more than its five seatsibling and the suspension andsteering systems have beenretuned to take account ofthis.

FACTS

IF the Clubman is the MINI in its mostutilitarian form, it should make evenmore sense with the MINI’s most utili-tarian engine.

It all bodes well for the MINI OneClubman. Say what you like about theMINI’s iconic design, zesty drivingexperience and exemplary economy,it’s not the most practical destinationfor around £12,000 of your hardearned cash.

Those stingy rear seats and the lessthan captious boot on the hatchbackmodel mean that family journeys canbe a bit of a squeeze.

The Clubman was created toaddress this point and did a decent jobwithout setting the world alight. Moreaffordably priced in One form, theClubman could be at its most appeal-ing.

The MINI One Clubman has a 1.4-litre petrol engine and with 95bhp, itisn’t the most vigorous performer. Givethe accelerator pedal a sound stomp-ing and, if you’re slick enough withthe gearbox, 60mph can be reached in11.6s.

That and the 114mph top speedmakes this the slowest MINI Clubmanbut neither the Cooper’s 9.8s nor theCooper D’s 10.4s are particularly rapidand yet those cars are more thancapable of getting their drivers grin-ning.

Like all MINI products, theClubman’s fun factor comes from itsresponsive steering, firm suspensionand tight body control, the OneClubman should be no different, par-ticularly as it shares the Cooper’ssporty suspension set-up.

With a longer wheelbase andaround 2cm of extra roof height plusidentical components as far back asthe B-pillars, there doesn’t seem to bemuch scope for the Clubman to dra-matically exceed the interior space ofthe MINI.

Crucially though, it’s 24cm longeroverall thanks to the extended rearoverhang and that has helped BMWsqueeze in 8cm of extra rear legroomwhile upping the boot capacity from apaltry 160 litres to a respectable 260.

The rear seats take the form of a

three-seater bench in the standard carbut the standard MINI’s two-personpods can be reinstated as a no costoption if you don’t need the middleberth.

The Clubman is a five-door car butthe doors aren’t exactly where you’dexpect them to be.

It’s business as usual at the front butaccess to the rear seating is through asingle ‘suicide’ door on the right-handside. Hinged on its rearmost edge so

that it opens in the opposite directionto the front doors, it’s positioned onthe right-hand side of the Clubmanand there’s no equivalent on the left. Itmeans that rear seat passengers inright-hand drive markets like the UKare forced to exit into the road.

The One Clubman comes in ataround £1,200 less than the CooperClubman, a decent saving that willbring this more practical MINI intorange for a wider group of buyers.

The MINI One Clubman can return

52.3mpg on the combined cyclewhich is very good for a petrol modeland its emissions are a similarly strong130g/km.

Anyone looking for a small car withloads of space and practicality built inmight not appreciate the MINIClubman. There are far better ways ofaccommodating the family comfort-ably for this kind of money. As a MINIwith a bit more space, however, it’s afine product and that holds trueregardless of which engine is installed.

FACTSWITHIN the ranges of any serious carmaker you have the niche modelsthat can be a bit adventurous, theimage building halo products andthen you have the cars that representthe seed corn.

The A4 is that car to Audi – amodel that it cannot afford to getwrong. With this latest third genera-tion car, Audi has played a resolutelystraight bat, applying simple proce-dures. Make it slightly bigger, slightlymore powerful and better built thanever. Throw a few innovations trialledelsewhere at it. Above all, do notmake it radical.

The A4 is certainly better than itspredecessor to drive. Moving theengine lower and backwards in thechassis has helped weight distributionfor a subtle difference in chassisdynamics.

The other headline feature of thislatest A4 is the fact that it sits on the

longest wheelbase in its class whichenables a 36mm increase in rear legroom, with the added bonus of a 20-litre boost in boot capacity, makingthis car easily the most spacious in itssector.

The 2.7-litre TDI version of the A4starts at around £28,000 which is

closer to the 3.0-litre diesel than the2.0-litre oil burner in price, if not inpower output which, on the face ofit, would appear to make the 3.0-litrecar the better buy. It’s worth remem-bering that this price includes the notinconsequential cost of theMultitronic CVT gearbox and when

prices are adjusted accordingly, the 2.7TDI looks good value. For a premiumof around £1,200, you can also opt foran estate ‘Avant’ version. Here, spacein the back is rated at 490 litres withthe rear seats in place and 1,430 withthe rear bench folded.

A combined fuel economy figure of

42.8mpg is an excellent return for amodel of this potency and even theurban figure of 34.9mpg is not to besniffed at. On a longer run, this A4can chalk up nearly 50mpg whichmeans an effective range of over 700miles from a tank full of diesel.

Get inside and there’s still the reas-suring feel of solid build quality, withsoft touch finishes and excellentergonomics. The mark of a great caris its depth of engineering - how longand hard its designers have thoughtabout how it’s going to be used. TheA4 impresses in this regard.

In all likelihood, this 2.7-litre modelis going to remain a niche player inthe A4 range; a compromise betweenthe bigger selling 2.0 and 3.0-litrediesel models.

It’s a car that deserves a little morecredit as a model in its own right, offering a mature and well-roundedalternative to BMW and Mercedesthat stacks up well as a financialproposition.

FANCY an affordable compact van-based MPV? Something like a RenaultKangoo or a Citroen BerlingoMultispace? Then you probably wishit was a little less, well, van-like.

In which case you’re probablygoing to like the alternative we’relooking at here, Skoda’s Roomster. It’sa competitor in this sector, sure, butwithout the commercial vehicle ori-gins.

The Roomster is a car of two halves– or ‘rooms’ as the Skoda PR machinewould have us refer to them.

The “driving room” is the areaoccupied by the driver and front pas-senger and it feels very much like thatof a conventional family hatchback.

The driving position is comfortable, with a good degree of adjustmentand much less upright than in mostMPV products. Quality materials havealso been used and build quality isstrong.

As you progress rearward, youenter the Roomster’s “living room”and it’s here that the vehicle’s van-likesilhouette pays dividends.

The roofline steps up, allowing therear seats to be mounted 46mm high-er than those in the front: this booststhe space available to passengers.

Leg and headroom are bothextremely generous and there’s alight, airy feel to the space thanks tothe large windows.

An optional panoramic glass roofincreases this effect with Skoda point-ing out that children become boredmore quickly if they don’t have agood view of the scenery.

The rear seating has also beenthoughtfully designed. All three sec-tions of the rear bench are individuallyfoldable and removable.

They also recline as well as slidingfore and aft so that owners canchoose either to maximise passengerlegroom or to bump up capacity inthe extremely generous boot behind. This boot is accessed through a largetailgate which lifts to reveal a capacityof 450 litres.

Then, depending on the position ofthe rear seats, owners have theoption of increasing that cargo spaceright up to a truly van-like 1,780 litres– which is achieved when all three

seats are positioned in the garage athome.

All this helps to open up a widerange of potential interior configura-tions for the Roomster – a realstrength when it comes to meetingthe varying needs of modern families.

Skoda have laid-on six engines forbuyers to choose from and these areequally split between petrol anddiesel. The petrol range includes a70bhp 1.2-litre unit, then there’s an85bhp 1.4 and a 105bhp 1.6. Diesel-wise, you get 70 and 80bhp 1.4-litrethree-cylinder options or a 105bhp1.9-litre TDI.

There’s no doubt that, with its com-posed handling and clever interior, theRoomster is a far more sophisticatedproposition than your typical van-based MPV but it’s priced accordingly.

The basic price of around £10,000for a 1.2-litre model in base Roomster1 trim looks attractive enough but therange-topping Roomster 3 car stretch-es to over £14,000.

All derivatives look well-equipped,however, with air-conditioning, front, curtain and side airbags, body-coloured bumpers and an MP3-com-patible CD stereo.

The top Roomster 3 derivatives real-ly pile it on, adding the panoramicglass roof, parking sensors and cruisecontrol amongst other items. Theother option is the Roomster Scoutwhich piles on the off-roader designcues to create a more imposing air. It’snot four-wheel-drive though.

The unorthodox styling and clevercabin of the Roomster mean that, atlast, we could be looking at a Skodathat you buy with your heart as wellas your head.

Taking the van out of the van-basedMPV equation could prove to be amasterstroke.

FACTSTHERE was good reason to sit up andpay attention when Ford startedmaking some big noises about its S-MAX MPV model and that self samemodel was named as European Carof the Year 2007.

For a start it’s got the right sort ofshape. There’s room inside for sevenpeople but it’s a radically sportiervehicle than the latest Galaxy modelwith which it shares the same under-pinnings.

Ford point to the fact that the S-MAX in fact shares just a handful ofexterior parts with the more conven-tional Galaxy, the headlamps andbonnet having the same part num-bers. The comparative height of thevehicles (1676mm for the Galaxy and1607mm for the S-MAX) shows thatthe sleek, hunkered down appear-ance of the sportier S-MAX is notmerely down to clever penmanship. This is the sleekest people mover thisside of a Mercedes R-Class.

Recent improvements include the

addition of a 175bhp 2.2-litre TDCimodel, a flexifuel version (FFV) capa-ble of running on any mix ofbioethanol and petrol in the same fueltank, plus extra equipment includingBluetooth compatibility.

Let’s get to the heart of any MPVstyle vehicle – the seats. Ford’s design-ers appear to have become fed up

with Vauxhall taking all the plauditsfor clever seating solutions and havecome up with a system of their own.FFS (Ford FoldFlatSystem before youattribute a baser meaning to thatacronym) allows 32 different seatingpermutations. The second and thirdrows of seats all fold flat to form agenuinely huge load floor that mea-

sures 2.0 by 1.15 metres which isabout as big as a double bed.

In addition to the FordFoldFlatSystem, a number of lashingpoints are located across the floor andon the cabin sides, helping to preventyour belongings from destroyingthemselves if you do fail to resist theFord’s sporty character. If you do wish

to run the S-MAX in removal vanmode, it’ll heave around up to 2,000litres of goods with all the rear seatfolded flat. There are also no fewerthan 26 different cubbies locatedaround the cabin so you’ll need toknow where you left that key/creditcard/wedding ring or it could be alengthy search. In total, there’s a full90 litres of oddment stowage in total.

Prices start from under £19,000 fora 2.0-litre Edge with a pair of dieselengines just above that, the 1.8 TDCi125bhp Edge and the 2.0-litre TDCi140bhp Edge. You can also get Ford’s6-speed Durashift automatic allied to2.0 TDCi 130bhp power.

The 2.5-litre engine is quite a tool,in effect being an almost direct trans-plant of the unit found in the FocusST. This is good for 220bhp and looksgood value in either Zetec trim orrange-topping Titanium guise.

Most MPVs are enough to put youto sleep. In the S-MAX, Ford havedeveloped one with a bit of personali-ty. Let’s hope they’re rewarded fordoing so.

THE INSIGNIA

MORE striking to look at than theVectra but also more spacious andwith an improved engine range, theVauxhall Insignia looks like a winner.

The optional four-wheel-drive sys-tem should go down well at the topend of the range helping the Insigniato extend its appeal to more privatebuyers.

The people that made the VauxhallVectra the success that it was wouldultimately have a big part to play in itsdownfall.

The car was popular through all itsvarious versions but popular with thewrong people. Fleet managers lovedthe dependable style of this low costfamily car but private buyers were lessenamoured. Too many found its pro-saic qualities a little, well, boring.

Now the Vectra’s replacement hasarrived and with its new name comesa new focus.

The Insignia is offered with fiveengines initially. For petrol buyers,

there’s an entry-level 1.8-litre 140PSECOTEC unit, then a rather large gapto a 220PS 2.0-litre turbochargedunit, sitting below a 2.8-litre V6260PS range-topper.

If you want a CDTi diesel, there area couple of fresh 2.0-litre ones, devel-oping either 130 or 160PS. TheInsignia is offered in two or four-wheel-drive guise with the 4x4 modelbenefiting from the clever adaptiveall-wheel-drive system pioneered bySaab.

It adapts the distribution of torquebetween all four wheels instanta-neously to enhance traction and han-dling. This should give the Insignia akey advantage over its predominately2WD rivals.

A clever adjustable damping‘FlexRide’ system has been developedfor this car, enabling drivers to choose

a chassis setup that matches theirown particular driving style.

In addition to the Standard ride set-ting, FlexRide enables the driver toselect a relaxed (Tour) setting or afirmer suspension set-up (Sport) bypressing one of two buttons on theinstrument panel.

Offered as a five-door, a four-dooror an estate, this car tries for adynamic, head-turning appearanceand isn’t unsuccessful. The five-doorhatch and four-door saloon versionsare nigh-on impossible to distinguishat a glance. Both have the samebowed roofline which drops dramati-cally towards the rear and, perhapsthe Insignia’s signature stylistic device,

the “blade” feature that’s cutawaybehind the front wheelarches.

At the front, all Insignia modelsfeature a bold chrome grille with thelatest Vauxhall badge at the centre. It sits on a raised centre sectionwhich runs down through thebumper and up to merge with thelines of the Insignia’s fluted bonnet. The result is as easy on the air as it ison the eye with Vauxhall claimingthe sector’s best aerodynamics at0.27Cd, one of the most slipperyshapes of any car.

Is this car as sharp to drive as itsMondeo rival? Perhaps not, butthere’s not much in it and the cleverFlexRide system gives it a technologi-

cal edge. There’s not very much onthe debit side, unless you count thebig gap between the two four cylin-der petrol engines’ output and theirunremarkable fuel economy.

Overall, what’s crucial is that thebasics seem to work. The Insignialooks a desirable, cleverly designedpackage that will give rivals some-thing to think about.

Experience the Insignia at theMoorland Big Weekend (Saturday,February 14, Sunday, February 15).Ride and drive available all weekend, book your test drive now to avoid dis-appointment, limited places available.

Prices range from £15,601 to£28,867.

ROBINS AND DAY

THESE days, driving and owningany car is more pleasurable thanever before. Nevertheless, whenthe time for servicing - or an MOT- does finally arrive, you'll want anexperienced place to go that keepsrunning costs low.

Keeping expense to a minimumis often difficult when it comes tothings like tyres, exhausts, batter-ies, clutches, shock absorbers, ser-vicing and all the costs associatedwith MOTs. So it's natural to thinkno further than your nearest 'fast-fit'-style operator.

However, many don't realise thatthe kind of deals on offer there areoften available at your main dealer. Here, as well as prices comparableto any of the high street chains, you'll find all the experience that isdirectly relevant to your particularmake and model of car, in otherwords, the best of both worlds.

This is all the more surprising

when you consider that at a maindealer only genuine original equip-ment parts are used, parts of bet-ter quality, designed specifically foryour car to last longer and keepyou safer. If you've a family toconsider, that's important if you'reto have the peace of mind ofbeing able to count on reliability.

Main dealers are regularly per-ceived as being much more expen-sive than local garages and insome cases it's true. However, it'salways best to take the long termview, calculating the lifetime costof main dealer servicing and

weighing that against the moneyyou'll make back when you sellyour car with a full dealer servicehistory. In many cases the differ-ences are marginal and you'll begetting all of the benefits abovefor very little outlay.

For prestige cars, its financialmadness not to get the car maindealer serviced. It's not a case ofcan you afford to, more a case ofcan you afford not to?

The Gazette

THE market for affordable convertiblesis popularised by cabriolet versions ofthe VW Golf, the Vauxhall Astra, theFord Escort, the Rover 200, the RenaultMegane and the Peugeot 306.

They must be differentiated fromRoadsters, a class which really needs tobe addressed separately. WhileRoadsters are generally bought as sec-ond or third cars, these hatchback-based Cabrios are usually expected tofunction as everyday tools, come wind, rain or snow.CHEAP & CHEERFULOPTIONSYou can buy a lot of trouble at the bot-tom of this particular market sector, turning what was supposed to be acheap and cheerful buy into a depress-ing money pit.

Early Cabriolet versions of the VWGolf, Renault 19 and Vauxhall Astrafrom the early Nineties are quite plenti-ful in the £1,000-£2,000 bracket butthese will all have led hard lives andyou’ll do well to avoid them. Better tosave up a bit longer and set your sightson the more recent age bracket.

The Peugeot 306 Cabriolet is proba-bly the pick of the bunch with its sleekPininfarina styling having weatheredthe years fairly well. Alternatively,

there’s another French offering thatcan still draw admiring glances, theversatile Renault Megane Cabriolet.

The final choice we’d look to is theVolkswagen Golf Cabriolet in Mk IIIguise, manufactured from 1998.Although its face suggests Mark 4,beneath the lines is a slightly older butstill very solid chassis. Just don’t expect

the last word in sparky performance,though.AFFORDABLEMID-RANGERSThe big seller in this sector of theaffordable cabriolet market has beenthe Vauxhall Astra Cabriolet, initiallymarketed as the Coupe Cabriolet.

Based on the sleek Bertone-styled

Coupe, this car is not only easy to ownbut also great fun to drive and in Turboguise, it’s one of the few affordablecabriolets with genuine poke. Even the2.2-litre version has a very respectableturn of pace.DESIRABLE BUTPOTENTIALLY PRICEYThe best of the mainstream pack are

represented by the Ford Focus CC andthe Vauxhall Astra Twintop. If you havea few more bob to spend, then theVolkswagen Eos gets a solid recom-mendation.

Then there’s the Volvo C70 to consider.Cynics may say that it’s just a badge-engineered Ford Focus but it has a def-inite feelgood factor.

WHAT TO LOOK FORWith cars of this kind, it’s even moreimportant to insist upon a full servicehistory.

Many low mileage examples willhave been garaged over the winterwithout the hood up – which is badnews – and servicing may well havebeen skipped.
