ANCHOR AIMS GAMES RESULTS/PHOTOS & REPORTS

What a tournament – 8 games over 5 days! In our first game we had a 1 point win over Orewa College. Then we pulled off wins against Ashbrook and our local Te Kura Kaupapa Kokiri, to win our pool. The crossover, against Christchurch South, was our toughest game in the entire tournament and we played hard, but couldn’t combat their height and athleticism losing by 14. This put us into playing for 17th-32nd. We had close games and lost by 4 or less against Karori Normal Intermediate, John Paul College and Albany Junior High. Where’s a buzzer beater when you need one? We did pull off a convincing win against Mountainview Intermediate, from Taupo, to put us in 28th place out of the 67 teams. All in all, a great AIMS tournament played with pride, determination and teamwork. Team members: Connor Macdonald (team medal winner), Jacob Hall, Austin Cashmore, Kyran Standen, Will Fraser, Oliver Taylor, Seth Whinney, Cameron Skilton, James Walker, Breiton Tuwairua, Benjamin Lindsey, Kameo Wagner. Coaches: Leanne Hall, Joe Broughton. Manager: Anna Walker.

The 2017 Girls AIMs basketball team was made up of 11 girls: Makana Horne, Lily Rall, Brooke Watson, Nikki Whyte, Kalea Earles, Piper Thomas, Lucy Sandford, Ivy Mitchell, Angeleah Fraser, Sarah Burke and Sia Fotu. As a newly formed team, the girls performed well above what they had expected. They played 8 games over the week and all apart from 1 game, against Takapuna Intermediate, the scores were incredibly close, with several wins and losses of only 1 point. The game against Takapuna Intermediate (who went on to be the 2017 winners) was the toughest game, but the Mount girls still managed to pull out some great defence and played well as a team to the end. They learnt so much and improved incredibly throughout the tournament. Outside the competitive aspect of the games, the girls had a lot of great experiences and made friendships with players from other teams. Some of the girls also billeted players from Waimea Intermediate, Nelson, which was a lot of fun. They also enjoyed shared lunches, watched other sports and loved the whole atmosphere of the week. Both teams were a credit to our school in behaviour and effort, and the quality of coaching was outstanding and passionate. A huge thank you from all the team members for all the support received from coaches, managers and parents.

The MMI Boys AIMS football team was very young relative to the competition. The 13-strong squad included 10, Year 7 players that will be eligible again next year. After winning 3, losing 2 and drawing 1 game we finished 4th of 8 teams in our group. We were then the only 4th placed team to win its Round of 16 match. Things got exciting after that when our two finals matches went to penalty shootouts. We emerged victorious after the first but weren’t so lucky in the second. In the end we finished the competition in 22nd place out of 59 teams. It was a respectable result in the circumstances and the tournament was a great experience for all involved. Team: Jed Davis, Tay Ririnui, Tommy Crockford, Ashton Pellow, Reed Tong, Jonty Burggraaf, Finley Stanelin, Gene Baggott, Brodie Gilmore, Jacob Rolleston, Tristan Kawana, Haki Argent and Zac Bryant. Our player of the week was Brodie Gilmore. Coaches: Paul Davis, Maia Ririnui.

Olivia Arnold, Holly Bathgate, Luiza Farias, Olivia Marlowe, Milly Swanberg, Cate Ratcliffe, Aneesha Shallcross, Aiyana Rogoz, Mya Brickley, Neve Simpson, Rachael Cawte, Willow McBride. The Football Girls had an amazing week at the AIMS Games. In preparation for the AIMS Games the girls dedicated themselves to three trainings a week, and their hard work certainly paid off. We came 16th out of 39 teams, and we came away as the top Bay of Plenty team. Rachael Cawte was also awarded MVP as she saved the day over and over again, by defending and winning the ball back from the opposition. A big thank you to Ana Sheerin who managed the team and also helped out at trainings and throughout AIMS week. Also a big thank you to the wonderful parents and and supporters who helped out during AIMS week. I am very proud of the girls and the effort that they put in throughout trainings and the games. You did our school proud! - Hannah O'Kane (Coach)

The futsal boys had an amazing 4 days at ASB Arena. They had outstanding games, going through the pool round, cross over, quarter-finals and semi-finals, unbeaten. The boys gave it their all in the final, in front of a very vocal home crowd, coming away with SILVER MEDALS. It was an extremely tight game, which could have gone either way! The final score was 2-1. The boy’s attitude in all games was fantastic. Both Colm (coach) and Jen (manager) were extremely proud of them all, as were all their supportive parents. Watch out for these future All Whites!! Team: Nathan Rostron, Ethan Pearson, Michael Kennedy, Mani Noel, Bailey Rota, Jye Reid, Joshua Gore and Mitchell Bark Riki (GK).

We had a great week, playing 10 games in total, against some very tough Auckland competition. We came through our pool play and crossovers with 7 wins and 1 draw, heading us into a semi-final against Aquinas!! Over 8 games we scored 90 goals, while conceding only 6!! Matt Anderson, (our goalie) was truly amazing!! We were nervous against Aquinas, but we played with guts and determination, to win 4-1. Our greatest achievement of the week, or most satisfying, at least. Our final against St Peters was exciting but they were just too strong, in the end and we lost 5-3, in the last quarter. We have great depth across our team and every single player scored a goal at some time during the tournament. Matt, Xavier, Jack, Ruby, Gus, Charlie, EJ, Harry, Ethan and Blake - outstanding effort kids, you make us very proud every single day. Coaches, Ryan and Bae kept everyone motivated with our chant and lucky smurfs. Charlie Bury took out the AIMS Team medal for his attitude and charm across the week. We are heading to North Islands at the end of October so we have one last chance to secure GOLD!!

Congratulations to the Girls Waterpolo team, Grace Akroyd, Mia and Ellie Thompson, Immy Coffey, Issy Reardon- Pollet, Olive Abrahams, Quinn Farley and Katie Parkinson! We are very proud of the girls, playing together for the first time at AIMS. They remained upbeat and enthusiastic throughout to finish 5th, after playing some very tough games, against strong talented competitors. Special thanks going to Emma Jones, EJ Rieger and Ella Pollock, for giving up their time to coach and manage.

Congratulations to all those who competed in the AIMS Cross Country. The competition was run in terrible conditions and had some great runners over a tough 3km course. All our runners gave it their best and had some pleasing results. Olivia Hala and Lucy Bartlett both finished in the top ten of their respective races. Our Year 8 girls teams came fifth, and just missed out on the bronze medal by 5 points. Our championship relay team ran 12 laps of a 1km course to finish 8th. Our para athlete runner, Joel, had a great run to cross the line first in his race. Well done to the following runners:

Joel Johnson Prescott, Olivia Hala, Jazmin Mitchell, Pipi Roper, Lacey Cassidy-Astill, Gene Baggott, Reed Tong, Daniel Boase, Noah Johnstone, Felix Bird, Lucy Bartlett, Leah Collins, Poppy Wilson, Olive Abrahams and Finn Hansen.

All team members had a fantastic week of competition. The girls’ team took out gold after a nail biting final eventually winning by 3 games to 2. They also won the girls team cup. Marielle Dulangon and Charla Dougal took out bronze in the girl’s doubles, after losing in a closely fought semi-final against the Somerville girls. Marielle Dulangon and Tommy Power won silver in the mixed doubles. Marielle took out gold, in the girl’s singles, after an incredible fight back from being 2-1 down.

Although the boys did not take out any championship honors they all performed well in the team, doubles and singles events. A credit to their dedication, towards training sessions, during their lunch breaks.

Our goal for 2017 was to place in the top 8. In our pool games, we played Sylvia Park and won 43 -5, Northcross we lost 22-7 and Kamo we lost 10 -5. In two pool games, we played Tauranga first up and won 12-10. Our 2nd game was against the 2016 AIMS Champions Royal Oak - we won 12-10. Our final game of pool play was against Highlands we won 41 - 0. Crossover games, we ended up in the top 8 - Yes!!! Our pool of 4 was going to be tough. The first game was against Titahi Bay. MMI won 36 - 7. We then met Royal Oak again, where we lost in the final minute 15-14. However, we came back positive and determined, winning against Northcross 31 -17. This win put us into the top 4!!! Finals day, we met Tauranga again in our semi-final. We won in a nail biter match 12-10. MMI Girls Rugby 7s were into the FINALS!!! We played Royal Oak in another tough game - even though we lost the game 17 – 10, we returned home winners with the Silver medal. An extremely proud coach, team and supporting whanau, parents and community.

Mount Maunganui Intermediate Boys Rugby 7s team had 5 hard days of 7s rugby, playing 12 games throughout the competition. We won 5 out of 6 pool games to finish 2nd in our pool, and go into the cross overs for places 1- 12. We had many close games through the playoffs with the 24-12 win over, unbeaten Peterhead School, the highlight. At our best, we played great 7s but, unfortunately, were not always consistent and always struggled in our last game of the day. We ended up 10th out of 49th teams. It was a tough tournament and a big step up for our players. Other highlights were meeting All Blacks 7s captain Scott Curry and Black Ferns fullback Selica Winiata, who let us hold and have photo with the Womens Rugby World Cup. Well done to the following players: Matt Stewart, Micah Fale, Melie Faiva, Vili Potter, Tipene Dickson, Jimmi Robins, Kaia Russell, Justin Falken, Steven Khoun, Elias Marks, and Jai Knight.

9 of our 18 players were part of the 113 students who qualified in the singles competition. It is a really great achievement just to qualify for post section play in indoor bowls. Awesome achievements girls! 148 teams were entered the pairs competition, 47 teams qualified for post section play. 6 of the 10 teams we entered qualified. We had 7 squash players compete at AIMS. The team was Jack Turner, Daniel Guildford, Zak Morrison, Libby Price, Danielle Flood-Smith, Brooke Steele, and Emma Merson. All of them had great fun and played about 6 games each.

Jack Blow and Fergus Roberts both competed as

individuals and in the doubles for tennis. They lost in the first round of doubles to a strong combination. Jack finished in the top 16, and Fergus lost in the plate semi final.

It has been a ‘hive of activity’ on the active transport front the last couple of weeks building up for community engagement for the Tauranga Cycle Plan. Has been fantastic working with student groups on their plans to encourage their own school communities to have their say about how we can make Tauranga easier and safer for people on bikes. The website has some awesome tools to help people provide feedback – mapping tool, surveys, sharing ideas, best practise examples and schools competition section where you will be able to view all the wonderful videos we received from schools. Check it out and have your say www.tauranga.govt.nz/cycling Tauranga Cycle Plan - Schools Video Competition Thank you for supporting your students to create such wonderful videos to encourage their school communities to help shape the future for biking. I’m sure you will enjoy viewing the videos as much as we did. The judges had their work cut out for them! We received 15 entries into the video competition. WE ARE WINNERS!!

Please help us get more people riding their bikes

Our council have created a new schools competition to get feedback on how we can make Tauranga easier and safer for people on bikes. From Monday 18 Sept - 5th November 2017 you can go online to give feedback - www.tauranga.govt.nz/cycling. They have some awesome tools on their website to help you provide feedback on how to make it easier and safer for people to ride bikes around our city. All feedback counts, so whanau, parents, grandparents, neighbours and friends can go online and tell Council where you think there should be cycle lanes, or bike routes to be improved, even if you don’t ride a bike, what you think is important. The schools that get the most feedback win prizes! Everyone who provides feedback is in with a chance to win one of 2 bikes worth $1000 each. Mount Intermediate will also be running a lucky draw with movie passes up for grabs. If you prefer to do a written FreePost feedback form, these are available at the school office. Thanks for having your say - Travel Safe Student Leaders
