Introduzione
musicali nelle varie lingue e in particolare in Italiano. Il musical in questione è My
Fair Lady del 1964 diretto da George Cukor. Questo film, inspirato all’opera
appunto parti integranti dell’individuo e .

Capitolo I. L’Opera
I.1 Il Musical
in Europa.
13
comicità talvolta anche esagerata. Durante la seconda guerra mondiale invece le
storie erano principalmente patriottiche.
(1966), Jesus Christ Superstar (1970) e naturalmente My Fair Lady (1956).
successivo.
I.2 Trama
Dopo alcuni primi tentativi
fallimentari Eliza viene presentata in società e riscuote un gran successo
all’annuale ballo dell’ambasciata e ottenendo l’ammirazione di tutta l’alta
insieme.
15
I.3 Adattamento
I.4 Il dialetto Cockney
16
Ecco alcuni esempi:
Adam and Eve è l’espressione cockney usata per dire “believe” cioè “credere”
“Would you Adam and Eve it”: “ci crederesti?”
Bread and Honey è invece l’espressione per dire Money.
“I’m making real good bread”: “Sto facendo molti soldi”
China Plate è usata per dire “mate” e cioè compagno o amico
“Alright me old china?”: “Tutto bene mio vecchio amico?”
L’adattamento doveva avere senso in
tradurre soltanto i dialoghi.
rispettare oltre a quelle grammaticali.

“The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain”
diventare:

Capitolo II. Da Ovidio a George Cukor
Come accennato nel capitolo precedente My Fair Lady è ispirato all’opera
l’His Majesty’s Theatre di Londra.
proprio come accade a Cenerentola.
4 http://www.treccani.it/enciclopedia/educazione/
30
umana tale processo è particolarmente lungo e complesso”5
Infatti come
scrive Rousseau:
essere moralmente superiore all’uomo.
III. 3 L’educatore
rapporti spontanei (come quelli familiari) oppure attraverso interventi legati a
funzioni professionali (come insegnati, pedagogisti, istruttori ecc.).
37
delle sue inclinazioni naturali. Infatti come dicevamo in precedenza, ogni
In alcuni casi l’educando, deluso
38
scherno, derisione e diniego. Questo genera una sensazione di
abbandono e ha come conseguenza aggressività.

scuola elementare. Senza badare all’esito effettivo del test, selezionò
ad esempio l’educatore dovrà dare all’educando lezioni sull’educazione religiosa,
sessuale e culturale.
Primo Libro
camminate all’aperto.
l’educatore deve rispettare i tempi dell’educando che all’inizio comunica
attraverso gesti e parole non pronunciate perfettamente. Infatti questo
apprendimento è graduale e progredisce col progredire dello sviluppo.
muoversi all’aria aperta praticando esercizio fisico, prima attraverso il gioco e poi
l’educatore deve saper indirizzare bene.
Emilio e Sofia dovranno compiere diversi viaggi insieme e
imparare l’importanza della fedeltà. Inoltre in quest’ultima fase Emilio svilupperà
e l’eliminazione dell’influsso umano.

Infatti
l’educazione dura fino quasi all’età adulta(25 anni). Questo ne sottolinea
l’importanza.

ostacola.
L’esperienza inoltre secondo Dewey è basata su tre fattori:
50
fondamentale perché l’educando attraverso l’esperienza acquisisce
però entrare in conflitto. Quando entrano in conflitto tra di loro
l’esperienza non è più educativa16.
III. 7 Maria Montessori
nell’educazione. Infatti è importante educare i sensi e educare attraverso i sensi,

Senza
esperienza non c’è educazione.
53
Capitolo 4: L’esperienza linguistico- culturale
IV. 1 L’apprendimento linguistico
descrive suoni differenti allo stesso modo.
parola neve in eschimese.

Montaigne, 1580; tr. it., p. 150).19
Bisogna imparare a
19
http://www.treccani.it/enciclopedia/relativismo-culturale_(Enciclopedia-delle-scienze-sociali)/
61
Tutto all’inizio è una sorpresa e ogni
In

capirla e impararla a fondo.
all’apprendimento linguistico.
prestigio associato a «slow food».
adatta all’età ( e quindi alle necessità) dell’educando.

quanto effettivamente rimane dello studio teorico fatto in classe.
“Guten Tag” (buongiorno) utilizzato in Germania.
in prima persona.

My fair Lady:
The possible ideal
72
Introduction
I choose this topic for my thesis because I wanted to talk about something I love
but also that was in line with my studies.
I watched this musical at the university during a lesson of Literary Adaptation
and I liked it from the very first time because of its plot and its musical
adaptation in Italian.
The musical I am talking about is My Fair Lady by George Cukor 1964. This film is
based on the stage play Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw. It begins with a
challenge: turning a florist into a lady, by teaching her all the English phonemes.
I am keen on the main topic of the film: languages study and phonemes. This
play highlights the link between the language and the social background showing
how they’re parts of the person.
The main topic is the language education which refers to the process and
practice of acquiring a second or foreign language. It primarily is a branch of
applied linguistics, however can be considered an interdisciplinary field.
The language education includes also the communicative competence which
refers to a language user's grammatical knowledge of
syntax, morphology, phonology and the like, as well as social knowledge about
how and when to use utterances appropriately.
73
This means that when a person speaks with another doesn’t communicate just
through the words but also his cultural baggage plays a key role and it changes
according to the context.
In the musical a poor and semiliterate florist becomes a real lady over six months
studying the phonetics and learning how a duchess has to behave.
The character of Eliza could be anyone who is facing something new, like foreign
languages.
So I asked myself: Could it be possible? Is the phonetics the most important to
study if I want to speak a language fluently? If I study the grammar of a foreign
language, can I say that I can speak that language? And, above all, are six months
enough to study a language?
In this thesis I am going to analyse these topics in order to answer to these
questions, also starting from my experience as a foreign languages and cultures
student.
In the first chapter I’m going to analyse the play by George Cukor, talking about
the adaptation in Italian, that was one of the most difficult in the history of
cinema.
I will compare the musical by George Cukor to the Greek myth of Pygmalion and
Galathea analysing the differences and the analogies with the stage play
Pygmalion by Bernard Shaw and the musical.
In the following chapter the key elements of the musical will be analysed:
74
The women’s empowerment and obviously the education.
I am going to compare the methods of different pedagogues showing how the
education is not just something theoretical but even today is the centre of lively
debates, and something about men are always being interested in.
The third chapter will be focused on the second-language acquisition and on the
idea of the language as a complementing part of a culture.
Finally, I will talk about my experience in touch with a foreign language and
culture explaining why a theoretical knowledge is not enough to speak fluently a
language.

Chapter I: The Work
I.1 The Musical
Musical theatre is a form of theatrical or cinematographic performance that
combines music, acting and dance.
It was born in the USA, between the ‘800 and the ‘900 and it developed between
New York and Broadway. Music plays a key role, in fact the actors can act but
also sing and dance well.
Furthermore, music is important as much as dialogues, movement and all the
other elements.
Musicals were very popular, and they were written for all kind of people. The
great success was also due to the catchy songs that get stuck in the head, the
scenic design and choreography.
In addition to New York the musical was presented also in other cities of the USA
and all over Europe thanks to the cinematographic versions which supported its
spread.
During the years musical has changed according to the different historic
moments: for example during the Great Depression, it was a moment to escape
from reality, so there were funny plots and happy endings.
During the Second World War instead the stories were mainly patriotic, for
example The Sound Of Music, The King and I.
76
The golden ages for musicals were the 50s and the 60s, in fact during this period
shows like My Fair Lady(1956) and Cabaret(1966) were staged.
My Fair Lady staged for the first time at Merk Hellinger theatre on 15th March
1956 and it was a great success. It set a record for the longest run of any major
musical theatre production in history and it was also called “the perfect musical”
It had many revivals and also a film version by George Cukor, with the stunning
Audrey Hepburn interpreting the protagonist Eliza Doolittle.
I.2 The Plot
The story begins in London, in Covent Garden on evening in front of a theatre.
The atmosphere is very refined due to the carriages and the fancy clothes of the
aristocrats.
The protagonist Eliza Doolittle, a flower seller, shows up out of the blue trying to
sell her flowers to the people all around her, speaking with a sharp Cockney
accent. Professor Henry Higgins, phonetics expert, believes that a person’s
prospects in society can be determined from his accent and tone and he bets
with a friend of him, Colonel Hugh Pickering that he could teach Eliza how to
speak in a way she could pass as a duchess at the embassy ball six months later.
She accepts and the following morning and goes at Higgins’ home to have her
first lesson. All lessons are about English phonetics, for example the sound of the
H, and the aim is to make her Cockney accent disappear.
77
After some failures, she makes progresses and she finally starts with a
impeccable upper class accent.
Eliza poses as a princess at the embassy ball and she’s believed to be of royal
blood thanks to her way of speaking.
Now Eliza has a different language but also a different personality and she can’t
go back to her life as ignorant flowers seller because that life doesn’t belong to
her anymore. She decides to stay at Higgins’ home because she understand how
much she loves him but the latter refuses her and so she leaves his home.
It is only then that he realised that he loves her so he goes and search for her. He
finds her and asks her to come back to him. First Eliza refuses but then she crawls
back to him.
I.3 Cockney
The adaptation of the musical in the other languages was a real challenge and
even nowadays it is the centre of many debates. The translation, especially in
Italian, required a deep study because Eliza speaks with a Cockney accent that is
an English typical dialect. In addition, every Italian dialect would have clashed
with the typical English atmosphere.
The term “Cockney” was used by the rural Englishmen to define the London
dwellers generally until the 19th century and then became restricted to the
working class. Nowadays it is used to describe the East Londoners.
78
The region where the Cockney was spoken is not clearly defined, but generally
speaking a real Cockney was the one who could hear the bells of Saint Mary-le-
Bow from his place. But today elements of Cockney English are declining in usage
in the East End of London and the accent has migrated to Outer London.
Cockney dialect has some distinctive accents and features for example:
Use of “me” instead of “my”
Use of ain’t
Use of double negatives
Final –er pronounced [Ə]
Cockney accent has always been considered inferior by many. This visual
changed when in 1909 it received an official recognition by the London County
Council. Since then it has been accepted as an alternative form of the English
language.
The Italian adaptation was not so easy because obviously there is not an
equivalent dialect in Italian language.
The solution of the book is different from the film’s one. In the book the
translator chose a mixture of northern dialects such as the Venetian one,
Milanese and Piedmontese because as the Cockney they have a Celtic origin.
In the film instead Eliza speaks a mixture of southern dialects that fits her better
and phonetically speaking it is also more appropriate, given that, as in the
Cockney, there is a wrong pronunciation of the vowels.
79
Since My Fair Lady is a musical, the songs must be translated too besides. The
songs in a musical, in fact, are important as well as the dialogues and sometimes
they integrate the story itself.
The songs are always very difficult to translate and to adapt because there are
many musical “rules” to follow, as the melody and the rhythm.
In this case the work was even more difficult because of the song with the
tongue-twister that over the time has become the symbol of the musical:
“The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain”
The exact Italian translation of this sentence couldn’t work, so the translators
chose to alter the meaning changing the words but maintaining the same original
idea of the wrong pronunciation of the vowel.
Despite all the problems of translations and culture, the Italian translators did
their best and succeeded.
80
Chapter II. From Ovid to George Cukor
My fair Lady is based on the stage play Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw,
which is based on the Greek myth by Ovid Pygmalion and Galatea narrated in the
Metamorphoses.
II.1 The Greek myth of Pygmalion and Galatea
Pygmalion was a Greek talented sculpture from Cyprus. He repulsed all the
women in Cyprus because he saw women as flawed creatures. He dedicated all
his life to his passion: sculptures. He created Galatea, a sculpture alike a real
woman but more beautiful than any other woman that had ever lived on earth.
It was so perfect he fell deeply in love with her. He would always bring it gifts
such as precious stones, seashells, beads and so on. He kissed it, he talked to it
and he took care of it every day, as if it was alive. He also would dress it,
adorning it with necklaces, rings and earrings.
Aphrodite’s festival day came and Pygmalion went to her altar to make offerings.
While he was praying her he asked for a bride who would be “the living likeness
of my ivory girl”.
The goddess gave him a sign, and the flames shot up three times.
When he went home he ran to his sculpture and he embraced it, and kissed it
and he felt its lips warm and soft like the ones of a person made of flesh and
blood.
81
Aphrodite granted all his wishes and she gave life to Galatea.
He was unbelieving and his mind oscillated from doubt to joy, so he kept kissing
and touching her. But it wasn’t a misunderstanding, it was true.
The Goddess Aphrodite listened to his prayers and his desire and soon they were
wed and they never forgot to thank her for the gift.
Pygmalion and Galatea also had a daughter named Paphos, who gave the name
to the city of Paphos in Cyprus, where nowadays there’s the Aphrodite’s temple.
II.2 The myth of Pygmalion and Galatea in Arts
Over the centuries the myth has been inspired many artists such as Goethe,
Bernard Shaw and Jean-Philippe Rameau.
Pygmalion felt in love with Galatea, but the satisfaction come from the fact he
could turn it into a real woman, and in metaphor he could transform the ivory
into flesh.
This transformation is a clear metaphor of the transformation from an
“uneducated” human being ( that is like an ivory sculpture) into an educated
man.
Ovid compared the realisation of a real human being to a new creation. That’s
why Pygmalion ask for the help of a Goddess to do it.
82
The Aphrodite’s intervention in the myth represent the difficulty and the
complexity required from the education: something almost impossible which
needs the intervention of a Goddess.
II.3 Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw
George Bernard Shaw was inspired by the Greek myth by Ovid and he converted
it in a play stage changing completely the plot but maintaining the main idea:
bring someone to life.
The plot is the same of the musical My Fair Lady.
Act 1 It’s evening and group of persons are sheltering from the rein waiting for
their cab, out of a theatre in Covent Garden, London. They seem aristocrats
because of their fancy clothing. Eliza, a flowers seller, is trying to sell her flowers
with a strange accent, to Freddy Eynsford-Hills, a young man. They are joined by
a gentleman, the colonel Pickering. While she’s trying to sell her flowers another
man writes down every single word she says. She is worried because she thinks
he’s a police officer, instead he’s Henry Higgins, a professor of phonetics and a
friend of the colonel. He introduce himself and he says to the colonel he can
understand the origin of a person from the tone and the accent. Then he says
also he can teach Eliza to speak in a way she could pass as fair lady. She accepts
because she’s willing to work in a flower shop but she can’t if she talk like this.
Act 2 They are at Higgins’ home and Eliza joins them to have her first lesson.
Pickering makes a bet with him on his claim, and says that he will pay for her
83
lessons if Higgins succeeds. Eliza's father, Alfred Doolittle, appears in the scene
while Eliza is taking a bath. with the purpose of getting money out of Higgins. He
has no paternal interest in his daughter's welfare.
He has an eccentric view of life. He is aggressive and he also tries to hit her, but is
prevented by Pickering. The scene ends with Higgins telling Pickering that they
really have got a difficult job on their hands, because they understand Eliza’s bad
position.
Act 3 A few months have passed since Eliza has arrived at Higgins’s home. They
go to his mother’s house because she has visitors and Higgins is willing to prove
Eliza accent and want her talking with them. The visitors are Mrs. Eynsford Hill
and her sons Clara and Fraddy. Clare is immediately impressed by Eliza and
Freddy falls in love with her. Finally Eliza reveals her origin and she creates a
great common astonishment, but Higgins’ mother believes that she’s not
presentable.
Six months later there’s the ball at the embassy where Eliza is presented in public
and she passes as a princess.
Act 4 Professor Higgins, Colonel Pickering and Eliza are coming back home from
the ball. Pickering congratulates Higgins for winning the bet. The latter thanks
God it’s over because he couldn’t stand the situation anymore and he says he
has been sick over the last months. He hurts the feelings of Eliza because he says
that she’s ready to find a husband and get married, so she interprets this as he
want to sell herself like a prostitute. So she returns her jewellery to Higgins,
84
including the ring he gave to her and she leaves his home. She meets the young
Freddy who declares his feelings for her and so they go away together.
At this point he realise how much important she is in his life and he goes looking
for her.
Act 5 Higgins finds her at his mother’s home. She is there, but she doesn’t want
meet him. After firsts refusals they see each other and she say that she has
completely left behind the flower girl she was, and that she couldn't utter any of
her old sounds if she tried. Higgins asks Eliza if she wants to come back to him,
but she refuses. Eliza says that she just wants a little kindness, and that since he
will never stop to show her this, she will not come back, but will marry Freddy.
Higgins laughs to himself at the idea of Eliza marrying Freddy as the play ends.
This finale didn’t satisfy the audience, because they wanted a romantic finale
including the marriage between Eliza and Professor Higgins. That’s why it was
changed in the cinematographic version.
During the 1914 run, to Shaw's exasperation but not to his surprise, Tree (the
actor who interprets Professor Higgins) sought to sweeten Shaw's ending to
please himself and his record houses. Shaw returned for the 100th performance
and watched Higgins, standing at the window, toss a bouquet down to Eliza. "My
ending makes money; you ought to be grateful," protested Tree, to which Shaw
replied "Your ending is damnable; you ought to be shot."
85
George Bernard Shaw, a bit irritated added a postscript later essay “What
Happens Afterwards”, in which he explained precisely why it was impossible for
the story to end with Higgins and Eliza getting married.
He continued to protect what he saw as the play's and Eliza's integrity by
protecting the last scene. For at least some performances during the 1920
revival, Shaw adjusted the ending in a way that underscored the Shavian
message. He wrote,
“ When Eliza emancipates herself – when Galatea comes to life – she must not
relapse. She must retain her pride and triumph to the end. When Higgins takes
your arm on 'consort battleship' you must instantly throw him off with implacable
pride; and this is the note until the final 'Buy them yourself.' He will go out on the
balcony to watch your departure; come back triumphantly into the room; exclaim
'Galatea!' (meaning that the statue has come to life at last); and – curtain. Thus
he gets the last word; and you get it too.”23
Shaw wrote the play in early 1912. It was though and written for an English
audience, but a mild nervous breakdown of the protagonist Patrick Campbell
contributed to the delay of a London production. That’s why
Pygmalion premiered at the Hofburg Theatre in Vienna on 16 October 1913, in a
German translation by Shaw's Viennese literary agent. It obtained a great
success.
23
The Instinct of An Artist: Shaw and the Theatre. Catalog for “An Exhibition from the Bernard F. Burgunder Collection” 1997 Cornell University Library.
86
The following year it opened in London on 11 April, at His Majesty’s Theatre
running for 118 performances.24
Why was this play so much successful?
The play is a sharp lampoon of the rigid British class system and a commentary
on women’s independence. It also deals with topics such as the manipulation by
upper social class, but the core of the play is the education.
Pygmalion in the Greek myth creates his sculpture which is his stereotype of
perfect woman, as well as Professor Higgins in the play stage turns a flower
sellers into a Lady.
But what is the education and which is its role?
Are six months enough to educate a person?
Is the phonetics what really counts?

Chapter 3: Pedagogy over the time
III.1 Education
“ The education is the act or process of imparting or acquiring general
knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally of
preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life.” 25
The education was born with the human being, everyone needs to be educated
because when we come into the world we have genetic, social, psychological and
cultural information, which over the years we have to develop in order to adapt
ourselves in the best way with the environment and the story.
The word “education” derives from the Latin verb “educere” which means take
out. In fact the role of the education is to take out something that already exists
in the individual.
Education can take place in formal or informal settings and any experience that
has a formative effect on the way one thinks, feels, or acts may be considered
educational.
The Irish writer William Bulter Yeats affirms:
“ Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire”
Family plays a key role during this process because within the family the
foundations are laid. Such as the language acquisition.
25
http://www.dictionary.com/browse/education
88
Furthermore education should increase the innate potentialities of the individual
conforming him to socio-cultural model of the environment where he lives. This
includes transformations and innovations which lead to the achievement of the
personality.
Personality is a common term in contemporary psychology. It is a set of
individual differences that are affected by the development of an individual:
values, attitudes, personal memories, social relationships, habits, and skills.
It is determined also by a variety of external impulses which influence the
individual. Personality in fact is the result of a complex interaction of all kind of
experiences which concern family, communications medium and obviously the
school.
There is not a unique model of education which can be used for everybody.
Everyone is unique and different from all the others, so each educators should
find the best way to educate his scholar according to the latter’s needs and
inclinations.
III.2 Female Education
George Bernard Shaw’s play treats very important topics such as women’s
liberation and the female education, in fact the character who needs to be
educated is a women not by chance.
89
Until ‘700 women has been seeing as someone who just had to carry out her
duties which were take care of her home and family, looking after their children
and satisfy her husband’s needs.
Little girls education was based on these principles and it had this aim. A little girl
had to be educated in order to be a perfect future mother. She had to be docile
and weak. These two traits were essential and through the education they had to
be inculcated in the girl’s mind.
Moreover the patriarchal culture of that time denied to the women any use of
their mind and body, repressing every desires.
Between ‘700 and ‘800 this conception started to change. Rousseau thoughts
had a very important role for the women vision. In his play Emile, or On
Education, (Èmile, ou de l’education) there is a new vision of the woman and of
the mother.
Rousseau sharply criticizes the aristocratic women which gave their children to
the housewives because they were too much involved in the society life.
The role of the mother is essential for the child and for his education.
Sofia is the wife of Emile (protagonist of the treatise), and she’s educated from
her family to be a weak, docile wife and intellectually inferior than her husband.
Although her docility she chose to marry Emile, and not her parents. In this
period in fact there’s a new idea of the marriage: a voluntary contract between
90
two persons who are not equal. To have a long-lasting marriage the husband had
to be superior than the wife.
Also in the musical there is this disparity between Eliza and Professor Higgins
which is clear since the beginning.
In addition Eliza learns the behaviour and the manners of a real lady exactly as
Rousseau wrote in it play.
But there many differences between Sofia and Eliza. In fact when the latter, at
the end of the story understands that Higgins has just used her for his purposes,
she finds the courage to go away from him. This decision reveals us her great
independence. She’s not (like Sofia) subjugated to her husband, but she’s free
and independent.
III.3 The Educator
The educator is fundamental for the education. He achieves the education and
contributes to the human growth of an individual.
The educator is a guide which operates together with the scholar’s will of self-
improvement. He takes the abilities of the scholar out and he develops his
potentialities increasing his relations with the surrounding environment. He also
have to spend much time with the scholar sharing all the important moments to
understand better which are his attitudes and his interests in order to find the
best way to educate him. As we have already said, each scholar needs his own
way which is different from all the others.
91
The educator must be a model that the scholar is willing to reach.
III.4 Pygmalion effect
The Pygmalion effect, or Rosenthal effect, is the phenomenon whereby higher
expectations lead to an increase in performance.
A corollary of the Pygmalion effect is the golem effect, in which low expectations
lead to a decrease in performance; both effects are forms of self-fulfilling
prophecy. By the Pygmalion effect, people internalize their positive labels, and
those with positive labels succeed accordingly. The idea behind the Pygmalion
effect is that increasing the leader's expectation of the follower's performance
will result in better follower performance.
Studies of the Pygmalion effect have been difficult to conduct. Results show a
positive correlation between leader expectation and follower performance, but it
is argued that the studies are done in an unnatural, manipulated setting.
Scientists argue that the perceptions a leader has of a follower cause the
Pygmalion effect. The leader's expectations are influenced by their perception of
the situation or the followers themselves. Perception and expectation may
possibly be found in a similar part in the brain.
The German philosopher Robert Rosenthal did a study to show that if teachers
are led to expect better performances from children then children’s
performances are enhanced.
This study supported the hypothesis that reality can be positively or negatively
influenced by the expectations of others, called the observer-expectancy effect.
92
All students in a single California elementary school were given a disguised IQ
test at the beginning of the study. These scores were not disclosed to teachers.
Teachers were told that some of their students (chosen at random) could be
expected to be "intellectual bloomers" that year, doing better than expected in
comparison to their classmates. The bloomers' names were made known to the
teachers. At the end of the study, all students were again tested with the same
IQ-test used at the beginning of the study. All six grades in both experimental
and control groups showed a mean gain in IQ from before the test to after the
test. However, First and Second Graders showed statistically significant gains
favouring the experimental group of "intellectual bloomers". This led to the
conclusion that teacher expectations, particularly for the youngest children, can
influence student achievement. Rosenthal believed that even attitude or mood
could positively affect the students when the teacher was made aware of the
"bloomers". The teacher may pay closer attention to and even treat the child
differently in times of difficulty.26

III.5 Emile, or On Education
Emile, or On Education is one of the best and most important writings of the
French writer and philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau. It is about education and
the nature of the men. During the French revolution it was an inspiration for a
new national system of education.
The book is divided into five parts which are the five parts of the human life.
Book I
It concerns the first part of the life: childhood.
Rousseau believes that the growth depends on the education and that the
education is transmitted by three elements: nature, men, things.
He endorses John Locke's program of "hardening children's bodies against the
intemperance of season, climates, elements; against hunger, thirst, fatigue". He
also emphasizes the perils of swaddling and the benefits of mothers nursing their
own infants. Rousseau's enthusiasm for breastfeeding led to him to argue: " But
let mothers deign to nurse their children, morals will reform themselves, nature's
sentiments will be awakened in every heart, the state will be re-peopled"
Another important topic of the first book is the language acquisition. This
process must not be forced, it happens gradually and the educator have to
respect the times of the child.
Book II
94
The second book goes from 3 to 12 years and it concerns the firsts interactions of
the child with the world through the sensations.
In this period Emile learns how to walk and have memories and he also starts to
raise awareness of himself. In this phase the education has to come from the
world and not from books. Reading books is not recommended except from
Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe. He develops his senses during this period
learning to discern good and bad.
Book III
According to Rousseau this is the most important phase in life and it deserves
more attention. It goes from 12 to 15 years. In this period Emile is very curious
and he’s willing to know and experience the world around him. He gets in touch
with the world not through theoretical teaching but through his own experience.
Book IV
This period goes from 15 to 20 years.
Once Emile is physically strong and learns to carefully observe the world around
him, he is ready for the last part of his education — sentiment: "We have made
an active and thinking being. It remains for us, in order to complete the man,
only to make a loving and feeling being — that is to say, to perfect reason by
sentiment". Emile is a teenager at this point and it is only now that Rousseau
believes he is capable of understanding complex human emotions, particularly
sympathy. Rousseau argues that the child cannot put himself in the place of
95
others but once adolescence has been reached and he is able do so, Emile can
finally be brought into the world and socialized.
In addition to introducing a newly passionate Emile to society during his
adolescent years, the tutor also introduces him to religion. According to
Rousseau, children cannot understand abstract concepts such as the soul before
the age of about fifteen or sixteen, so to introduce religion to them is dangerous.
He writes: "It is a lesser evil to be unaware of the divinity than to offend
it".[Moreover, because children are incapable of understanding the difficult
concepts that are part of religion, he points out that children will only recite
what is told to them — they are unable to believe.
Book V
In this last phase (until 25 years ) Rousseau turns to the education of Sophie,
Emile's wife-to-be.
Rousseau begins his description of Sophie, the ideal woman, by describing the
differences between men and women in a famous passage:
“In what they have in common, they are equal. Where they differ, they are not
comparable. A perfect woman and a perfect man ought not to resemble each
other in mind any more than in looks, and perfection is not susceptible of more or
less. In the union of the sexes each contributes equally to the common aim, but
not in the same way. From this diversity arises the first assignable difference in
the moral relations of the two sexes.”
96
For Rousseau, "everything man and woman have in common belongs to the
species, and ... everything which distinguishes them belongs to the sex".
Rousseau states that women should be "passive and weak", "put up little
resistance" and are "made specially to please man"; he adds, however, that
"man ought to please her in turn", and he explains the dominance of man as a
function of "the sole fact of his strength", that is, as a strictly "natural" law, prior
to the introduction of "the law of love".
At this poi Emile doesn’t need his educator anymore, now he’s an adult and he
can educate on his turn. He’s going to be the educator of his children.
The most important element in Rousseau method is the time. The education in
fact lasts until Emile is twenty five years old (almost all lifelong). This make us
aware about its importance. Moreover Rousseau believes that the education
can’t be taught but everyone needs to learn it living and making mistakes.
III.6 John Dewey and the experience
John Dewey is certainly the most important pedagogist of the contemporary
history. He was an American philosopher, psychologist, and educational reformer
whose ideas have been influential in education and social reform. Dewey is one
of the primary figures associated with the philosophy of pragmatism and is
considered one of the founders of functional psychology.
His thinking is based on the "theory of experience", which according to him, is an
active exchange between man and nature which transforms both parties and it
remains constantly open. This exchange, however, creates an imbalance that is
97
reconstructed by means of thought which in turn requires the search for a
further balance.
Experience plays therefore a key role for education because the man is not a
passive spectator, but interacts with the environment around him. The thought
of man is so created by experience, and education has the task of opening the
way to new experiences and strengthening of all the opportunities for further
developments.
The word "experience" comes from the Latin experiri that means going through.
It is a kind of knowledge that is not learned through the mind but through the
senses. It may confirm or refute the opinion we have about something and
reveals to us the truth. The experience is a practical knowledge and never static.
Sometimes it forces us to leave all our certainties. To have an experience means
also overturn our conscience and not be the same person again, because with
the experience we can reach a new truth.
So the experience is never an end in itself, but it has ever an educational
purpose. It does not remain confined at a time, but it develops an educational
path of personality and potentials.
Dewey fact in his writings says:
"There is an intimate and necessary relation between the process of experience
and education"
This means, as we said earlier, that there is a cause-effect relation between the
experience and education.
98
Chapter 4 : The language cultural experience
IV. 1 The Language acquisition
So it is clear that the experience is a necessary condition for education. Today
this statement may seem almost obvious and banal, but at Dewey's time it was
an innovation. In fact, before it was thought that education was merely a
transfer of information from an individual (the teacher) to another (the student).
It is what happens as in the musical. Eliza acquires an education and a language
acquisition not through an experience but through the teaching of the correct
phonetics during a short time frame. But if the experience is necessary for
education in general, the same goes for language education.
Phonetics (the study of the sounds of human speech), is just one of the elements
of a language. In fact there is a cultural aspect that should not be
underestimated. Learning a language, doesn’t mean just studying the grammar,
but also learn the culture of the country where the language is spoken.
The language-culture combination is essential because the language is part of a
country’s culture and a language cannot be learned if we don’t know anything
about this culture.
So when we talk about language acquisition we cannot only talk about the
grammar or the phonetics, as they are only a part of the language which cannot
be fully learned only on a theoretical level.
99
The language spoken by a folk characterizes it. Behind a simple form of greeting
for example, there is the whole culture of the people. We cannot talk about
culture without talking about the language, and vice versa. The language-culture
combination as we said then, is not only inseparable but the two factors
influence each other.
All this happens because the language was not created artificially, but it has been
forming and evolving over the time. That’s why it is so closely linked to the
culture.
IV. 2 Franz Boas
The German anthropologist Franz Boas (1958-1942) developed his theory on
culture after a long series of studies in the United States.
He defines it as “the totality of the relations and intellectual and physical
activities which characterizes the behaviour of individuals in a social group- both
individually and collectively - in relation to their natural environment, to other
groups, to the members of the same group, as well as the behaviour of each
individual compared to itself.”
He did a series of studies on different cultures to understand precisely the
influence of culture on human life and on people. These studies came to the
conclusion that culture can affect even the sensory perceptions. According to
him, culture is the result of an infinite number of paths that concern rites of a
100
folk, customs, language, social structures, etc. that makes it unique and
unrepeatable.
Furthermore he believed the choice and the use of words are influenced by
culture. To prove his theory he used of the famous example of the word “snow”
in Eskimo. In the Eskimo language in fact we find a word for each form of the
snow that in other languages is described with one or more words.
“Aput” means snow on the ground, “ qana” means falling snow, “piqsirpoq”
means wind snow and quimuqsuq is used to indicate a snow avalanche.
With this example it is clear that their culture (of which the climate is part) has
influenced the language. In fact, to a certain cultural phenomenon corresponds a
linguistic variety and it is clear that each country has its own peculiarities, which
then influence the language. We are influenced by the culture since the early
years of our life, and it is something that we carry with us for life. It is an
unconscious mechanism as it is part of the human being itself. We act and we
behave unconsciously influenced by the culture in which we grow.
IV. 2.1 Acculturation
When we learn a language it is also necessary come in contact with the culture of
the country where the language is spoken. In this case we speak of acculturation,
that is the process of cultural change and psychological change that results
following meeting between cultures. Through this phenomenon we appropriate
of a country’s culture and of a language that is not our mother tongue.
101
Obviously acculturation depends on various factors, for example on the cultural
difference: the more two cultures are different from each other the harder will
be the acculturation. As a result, this difficulty will also include the language
acquisition. The more two cultures are similar, the easier will be learning a
second language, but if the social distance is greater, learning it will be harder.
Each language in fact expresses itself "not in a variety of sounds and signs, but in
a variety of world views"27
Moreover the culture is not static but dynamic, it influences and is influenced by
the society. It is in a flux that changes when the society, the nature, the climate
changes and it is also influenced by other cultures.
We realize how much culture is inherent in our being, when we come into
contact with a culture that is different from ours. In fact it is an uncontrolled
mechanism and totally unconscious. What we think is normal and obvious is
because it's part of our culture and perhaps the same thing may not be normal
anymore if we change the socio-geographic context.
1991
102
IV. 2.2 Socio-cultural relativism
This phenomenon is called social or cultural relativism.
Cultural relativism is a comparison with the variability and diversity of customs,
cultures, languages, society.
The relativism affirms that the question of what is the “best costume” is totally
meaningless. The “ best” is already expressed by people who adopt the costumes
of its own culture.
Therefore there is no culture better than another, but each culture is the "best"
for the people it represents. We can also say that as a consequence, there is not
a more difficult language than another, but the difficulty lies in the cultural
divergence.
For example, for an Italian it will be easier to learn a language such as French or
Spanish, because they have both neolatin roots, but also thanks to their
geographical and cultural closeness. But if we talk about language such as Arabic
or Japanese, learning certainly will take longer and it will be more complicated.
This difficulty is due to the fact that the Asian cultures are very far both on
geographically and socially lever from a westerner, so this cultural gap creates
great difficulties when we try to study a new language.
For a Palestinian or a Japanese learn French will be harder than learn languages
such as Chinese or Iranian.
103
Learning a new language requires an open-mindedness and an attitude willing to
know new realities. We must learn to look at what is different from us with
different eyes, without being rooted in our own believes and prejudices.
But how can we reach such an acculturation to learn better a language?
The answer is very simple: through the experience.
We cannot imagine to know a culture or study a language without the
experience. Studying the grammar, the phonetics and everything related to the
theoretical part of the language is essential for a first approach, because without
a preliminary study there is no possibility of communication. But we can’t just
stop at this first stage.
Each language, as we have seen, has behind a culture and an history that are
inseparable. The only way to truly understand a language is making an
experience of it.
IV.2.3. Culture Shock
Culture shock is a feeling of confusion and disorientation that everyone feels
with the transfer into a foreign country in touch with new habits and culture. In
this phase all the excitement for the new experience disappears and there are
anger, frustration, boredom, nostalgia and a strong desire to come back home.
The difference with the own culture can lead also to isolation or the contact with
people of the same country. In this phase the individual does not interact with
cultural diversity, but rather judge the diversity in a strictly subjective way that
feeds stereotypes.
104
After this phase there is the acculturation.
During the acculturation the individual becomes familiar with the new culture, it
begins to integrate with local people, learning the language and it also starts to
behave in line with the new culture.
IV. 3 The analysis into the experience
We can see that education is not something that comes out of nowhere, but it is
a constant and continuous work, and that language acquisition is not based only
on the learning of phonetics. So what happens in My Fair Lady, the core of this
study, is a possible ideal , but always just an ideal which cannot be real.
Learning acquisition cannot happens just on a theoretical way as a language is
always linked to a culture which is not static but undergoes constant changes.
Moreover the language by its nature is communication, it finds its raison d’être
in the relationship between individuals, in fact, when we study a language is
always for a desire to communicate and thus to create a connection with
someone else.
Therefore it is necessary that the theoretical study (grammar, phonetics,
vocabulary etc.) is expanded by experience. You cannot study a language without
practicing it. It must always be contextualized to understand it and learn it
thoroughly.
Certainly the theory is important because it is the basis of the learning process ,
but we cannot stop at this.
105
We can apply the concept of Dewey of experience also to the language
acquisition. Everyone needs to live its own experience in contact with the
language not only to consolidate it but also to really learn it. In fact the saying
"you learn by making mistakes" can also be applied in the field of languages: a
concept is imprinted in our mind when it is associated to an emotion, such as a
gaffe.
In fact when we are mistaken saying a word rather than another and someone
corrects us, that world will be impressed in our mind forever.
Metaphorically speaking, the experience is the vital value that can transform a
marble statue into a living woman, as in the myth of Ovid.
In fact, we can compare the theory to the statue of Galatea, a solid structure but
that needs to be animated to be transformed into someone alive.
In the musical Eliza, an ignorant flowers seller learns English starting from zero.
We have seen previously how Cockney dialect is different from English both
pronunciation and grammar, so Eliza is even more disadvantaged than a non-
native speaker who wants to learn English.
In fact the brain of a student (adult or child) who wants to learn a new language
from scratch is like a blank slate, which slowly like a sponge absorbs any
information and reworks it.
Who starts from a wrong knowledge of the language has to do a double work:
first he has to “forget” and eliminate common errors and then he has to learn a
new vocabulary, new pronunciation, a new grammar and so on. Basically he has
to do a double effort.
106
Eliza must not only learn a new language but also learn all those manners and
behaviours of a duchess, in fact she has to be educated.
Rousseau believes that education is so important that it has to last for a lifetime.
In fact, time is a key element.
Education need a slower rhythm because it is not something you can learn once
and definitively, but it changes and adapts to the age necessity of the scholar
(and so to his needs).
Education is also the starting point for a change that affects not only the
individual, but the whole society.
The process in the musical lasts six months, but as also affirmed by the authors
above-listed, it is a very short time and it is not enough to truly achieve the fixed
objectives.
107
Conclusion
The purpose of this work was to analyze the main themes of the musical that has
attracted me thematically and linguistically.
I saw the movie during a lesson of Literary Adaptation and the Italian adaptation
of the songs’ lyrics immediately intrigued me. But the main theme that I later
decided to analyze is the language acquisition and I wondered: Is the phonetic
what really matters in a language?
As a student of foreign languages my answer was immediately negative, because
I believe that a lifetime is not enough to really learn a language, and above all a
lot of experience is needed. I personally experienced it during my stay in Vienna,
capital of Austria.
Having studied German in Rome for six years, I wanted to practice it and see
what actually remains of the theoretical study I did in class.
During these two months I have encountered many difficulties because of my
completely different cultural background.
Especially at the beginning I had a real culture shock, which I mentioned earlier,
but once passed I realized how the language is really linked to the culture of the
place.
Starting from the greetings forms for example, they are different from the
Germans even though they speak the same language.
108
In Austria they greet usually with the formula "Grϋβ Gott" which literally means
"that God can say goodbye" rather than simply "Guten Tag" (good morning) used
in Germany.
This is because, as they explained me, in Austria the religion, especially
Catholicism, is more rooted than in Germany.
This is just one of many examples that can be done to show how the language is
actually influenced by the culture of people who speaks it and the only way to
truly understand it is to travel and live this experience personally.
And that’s why in My Fair Lady the ideal becomes possible, but still remains an ideal.

My fair lady:
Das möglich Ideal
110
My Fair Lady ist
112
Kapitel 1: Das Werk
I.1 Das Musical
Musical" aufzunehmen.
113
I.2 Die Handlung
I.3 Cockney
„The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain”
Jahrhunderts in ganz Europa.
Erziehung gibt.
124
Kapitel 4: Die sozio-kulturelle Erfahrung
IV. 1 Spracherwerb

gesellschaftlichen Kulturen an Nachbarkulturen.
Ideal bleibt.
