Preface
S.B.K. Govt. P. G. College is located in remote backward area of
Thar Desert of Rajasthan. The college was established in 1970 with an
objective to provide facility of higher education to the students of a
large geographical area. No other center of higher education was there
in the vicinity of more than 150 km. starting with a humble number of
17 students in 1970, now the college caters to need of about 1310
regular students and 3900 non collegiate students.
Graduation courses are being run in three faculties namely
Science, Commerce and Arts. Post graduate course is available in the
subject of Political science under faculty of Arts. For more than three
decades, the institution has been the Centre of higher in one of the
geographically largest district of the country (Recently, Govt. girl‟s
college has been established in the city). It has successfully encouraged
a large number of students from socially and economically under
privileged background to pursue advanced studies and has opened new
avenues for their job prospect.
The college is not only geographically isolated from the
mainstream but the social and cultural background of the student is
also quit difference in this area, as compared to other part of the
country. Under the contrasts of quantum jump in academic curriculum
and sluggish change in social set up, the college is striving to action to
maintained high standard of educational quality along with moral
values.

takes it as an opportunity for self-analysis, further; the process would
be helpful in identifying the weakness and to take remedial steps for
improvement.

13. Library containing more than 29000 reference and text books.
14. The college has access to Internet connectivity with broadband and
Wi-Fi.
15. Many faculty members are awarded PhD/ M Phil. degrees under
qualification improvement programs during last several years.
16. The college has a separate training and placement cell which has
been helping and guiding the students for career placement.
17. Two units of NSS for girls and boys are presently being run in the
college.
18. One NCC unit.
WEAKNESSES
1. College and its hostel building are old and needs repair and
renovation and demands funds.
2. As the number of students is increasing every year (at present
approx. 1300 students) the college has insufficient infrastructure for
increasing number of students.
3. Poor teacher: student ration due to non-recruitment of faculty and
revision of sanctioned posts.
4. Shortage of funds for development and modernization of labs,
library, classrooms and building.
5. All academic decisions are taken by JNV University Jodhpur as it is
a degree awarding university for the college. College cannot take the
final decision regarding any changes in curriculum, syllabus and
evaluation system.
Self-Study Report of SBK Govt P G College Jaisalmer
8
6. The college principal has limited financial power for purchase and
other purposes.
OPPORTUNITIES
1. The students of this area have easy access to the institute and they
prefer it because of well qualified staff, well stocked library, sports
facilities. At present the college has an intake of approximately 1300
students which can be increased with the upgrading and
modernization of infrastructure.
2. Being a government institute, it provides education to meritorious
students and the students of reserved categories at nominal fee. Thus
providing an equal opportunity to the poor and socially
disadvantaged section of the society.
3. Many coaching classes for tourist guide, forester, forest guard, sub
inspector, constable, SSC and patvar are being conducted thus
providing opportunity to students for better placement in government
jobs. New coaching classes may be introduced to enhance the
prospects of betterment of the students and thus providing them a
chance to keep pace with the changing economic, social and cultural
development of the country.
4. The college has about 30 acres of land and stands a lot of chances for
growth. The institute can use this land for the extension of building,
construction of new classrooms, labs, separate PG block etc. for the
students.
Self-Study Report of SBK Govt P G College Jaisalmer
9
5. Around 90% of students are from rural areas that commute daily and
face the hassle of public transport. The provision of college buses
can be of great convenience to the students.
CHALLENGES
Due to the technological advancement and the social, economic
and cultural changes the institute faces the following challenges:-
1. The present curriculum is very old and needs drastic changes. It is
the need of the hour that this curriculum should be updated and
modernized, to keep pace with the changing economic, social and
cultural development of the country. If not done so it will not be in
the interest of the institution.
2. In this age of competition and awareness among the parents and
students to choose the best institute and career it is necessary to
provide them the latest facilities, modern infrastructure at reasonable
fees. With the introduction of private sector in the field of education
they provide better infrastructure facilities and career opportunities
because of their financial strength. Students are lured to these
institutes and are charged hefty amount in the name of fees.
3. The lack of fresh recruitment of faculty forces the institute to employ
guest faculty lecturers on hourly basis and their salaries are being
paid from the PTA fund (Parent Teacher Fund) which can otherwise
be used for development of the college and providing facilities to
students.

Criteria-Wise Inputs
CRITERION 1: CURRICULAR ASPECTS
The college was with a mission to provide a platform to the
students of the area for higher studies. Before establishment of this
college, students had to go to Jodhpur or Bikaner for higher studies for
which minimum distance in any case was 300 kms. Thus higher
education was beyond imagination for the students of average families.
This problem addressed by the college by starting degree courses in the
faculties of Arts, Science and Commerce. Later, in view of requirement
of the students, post graduate programme in political Science has also
been started. College administration is further pursuing the state Govt.
to open new sections and to start PG courses in more subjects.
Besides teaching to regular students, the college also has proved
to be a boon for those students who wish to appear in graduate and PG
exams as non-collegiate students. The college collects their
examinations forms and conduct university examination. The library of
college with about 29000 titles is a vital support for them. The college
is also a study centre for VMO University Kota, providing educational
facilities under distance learning programme.
The college is affiliated by Jai Narain Vyas University, Jodhpur
and teaches the syllabi decided by the university. Three members of
college faculty member of Board of studies of the University. The
classes are held from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm, the time suitable for rural
students. Extra classes are also engaged for the needy students. 75 %

attendance is compulsory for students to appear in examination as a
regular student. The results, so far, have been promising and a good
number of students are scoring first division marks in university exams.
Simplicity, sincerity and discipline have been the tradition of this
college. Maintaining these traditions, the institute has a vision to start
various careers oriented vocational programmes for local youth so as to
utilize the local natural resources properly. Syllabi for various courses
are designed by Jai Narain Vyas University, as per U. G. C. norms. The
college ensures completions of syllabus with the stipulated time with a
teaching plan for each subject.
1.1 Curriculum Planning and Implementation
(Faculty and department wise Time table is prepared at the start
of academic year to ensure systemic and effective implementation of
the curriculum. Directorate of college education specifies the number
of working days and the date of commencement and end of the
academic session. At the college level the implementation of the
curriculum within the stipulated time is monitored and regulated by the
Head of the institute and Head of the departments respectively)
The goal and objective of the institution are clearly stated,
reviewed periodically and communicate systemically to all its
students, teachers, staff and other stakeholders.
Action plans for effective implementation of the curriculum for
institute as per guidelines provided by JNV University of
Jodhpur Rajasthan.
Self-Study Report of SBK Govt P G College Jaisalmer

Orientation and refresher course are conducted by universities to
improve teaching practices. Many other programmes like
seminar, workshops, symposium and tours are also organized by
the universities.
Institute organize guest lecture on different valuable topics for
students under YDC programme by expert of different fields like
industry, bank, another institutes and NGO & social
organization.
Some staff members play important role to develop the
curriculum by the University as a member of Board of studies.
Institute does not develop curriculum for any course.
Annual evaluation of the students carried out by annual
examination and term test.
1.2 Curriculum Enrichment:
The college is affiliated with JNV University Jodhpur, does not
have autonomy to finalize the curriculum. However, faculty members
of the college acting as convener / member contribute by incorporating
change in the existing syllabi. The curriculum is modified time to time
and modifications are made according local and regional needs.

1.3 Feedback System:
Feedback is the way by which institute know about
their weak points on which remedies are required. So, the college
development committee has been constituted with an objective to
monitor various comprehensive activities periodically. The committee
is comprises of local MLA, public representative, parents, faculty
members and principal of the college who is the president of the
committee. The committee is one of the most of the source of
providing informal feedback received from its members and non-
members. Valuable suggestions are also given by the students which
are passing out from the college and studying students. These
suggestions are help us strive towards the overall development of the
institution. Two lectures are members of Board of studies of the
University. Individual suggestions also given to the University. During
the meeting Board of studies suggestions of students are discussed and
if found beneficial to the students, introduce in the curriculum.
