Preface

S.B.K. Govt. P. G. College is located in remote backward area of

Thar Desert of Rajasthan. The college was established in 1970 with an

objective to provide facility of higher education to the students of a

large geographical area. No other center of higher education was there

in the vicinity of more than 150 km. starting with a humble number of

17 students in 1970, now the college caters to need of about 1310

regular students and 3900 non collegiate students.

Graduation courses are being run in three faculties namely

Science, Commerce and Arts. Post graduate course is available in the

subject of Political science under faculty of Arts. For more than three

decades, the institution has been the Centre of higher in one of the

geographically largest district of the country (Recently, Govt. girl‟s

college has been established in the city). It has successfully encouraged

a large number of students from socially and economically under

privileged background to pursue advanced studies and has opened new

avenues for their job prospect.

The college is not only geographically isolated from the

mainstream but the social and cultural background of the student is

also quit difference in this area, as compared to other part of the

country. Under the contrasts of quantum jump in academic curriculum

and sluggish change in social set up, the college is striving to action to

maintained high standard of educational quality along with moral

values.

With this background, college thinks it pertinent to get its

evaluated on national standard to get accredited by NAAC. The college

takes it as an opportunity for self-analysis, further; the process would

be helpful in identifying the weakness and to take remedial steps for

improvement.

The report has been prepared by the committee headed by Dr. S.

S. Meena, other member of the committee are Sh. P. K. Chandel

Lecturer in Botany and Sh. Sanjeev Kumar Verma Lecturer in EAFM.

Support from all the faculty members and non-teaching official has also

been sought in the process. Most of the data have been taken from the

office records.

Information regarding qualification, experience and expertise of

the faculty members by the teacher concerned and verified from the

office record. Librarian has provided the data regarding the library and

the data regarding various departments were provided by the concerned

heard of the departments.

In collecting student‟s feedback, preference has been given to the

students of second and third year courses as they have got sufficient

time to assess the functioning of the institute and quality of the

teachers. Student of the PG previous courses were also involved in the

evolution process. The committee thanks everyone to complete the task.

Wi-Fi.

15. Many faculty members are awarded PhD/ M Phil. degrees under

qualification improvement programs during last several years.

16. The college has a separate training and placement cell which has

been helping and guiding the students for career placement.

17. Two units of NSS for girls and boys are presently being run in the

college.

18. One NCC unit.

WEAKNESSES

1. College and its hostel building are old and needs repair and

renovation and demands funds.

2. As the number of students is increasing every year (at present

approx. 1300 students) the college has insufficient infrastructure for

increasing number of students.

3. Poor teacher: student ration due to non-recruitment of faculty and

revision of sanctioned posts.

4. Shortage of funds for development and modernization of labs,

library, classrooms and building.

5. All academic decisions are taken by JNV University Jodhpur as it is

a degree awarding university for the college. College cannot take the

final decision regarding any changes in curriculum, syllabus and

evaluation system.

Page 8: N A AA CC EACC CRREDDIITTATTIIOONN ((Cyyccllee--22 ... Report.pdf · 2. Criterion II: Teaching - Learning and Evaluation 25-33 2.1 Student Enrolment and Profile 26 2.2 Catering to

8

6. The college principal has limited financial power for purchase and

other purposes.

OPPORTUNITIES

1. The students of this area have easy access to the institute and they

prefer it because of well qualified staff, well stocked library, sports

facilities. At present the college has an intake of approximately 1300

students which can be increased with the upgrading and

modernization of infrastructure.

2. Being a government institute, it provides education to meritorious

students and the students of reserved categories at nominal fee. Thus

providing an equal opportunity to the poor and socially

disadvantaged section of the society.

3. Many coaching classes for tourist guide, forester, forest guard, sub

inspector, constable, SSC and patvar are being conducted thus

providing opportunity to students for better placement in government

jobs. New coaching classes may be introduced to enhance the

prospects of betterment of the students and thus providing them a

chance to keep pace with the changing economic, social and cultural

development of the country.

4. The college has about 30 acres of land and stands a lot of chances for

growth. The institute can use this land for the extension of building,

construction of new classrooms, labs, separate PG block etc. for the

students.

Page 9: N A AA CC EACC CRREDDIITTATTIIOONN ((Cyyccllee--22 ... Report.pdf · 2. Criterion II: Teaching - Learning and Evaluation 25-33 2.1 Student Enrolment and Profile 26 2.2 Catering to

Self-Study Report of SBK Govt P G College Jaisalmer

9

5. Around 90% of students are from rural areas that commute daily and

face the hassle of public transport. The provision of college buses

can be of great convenience to the students.

CHALLENGES

Due to the technological advancement and the social, economic

and cultural changes the institute faces the following challenges:-

1. The present curriculum is very old and needs drastic changes. It is

the need of the hour that this curriculum should be updated and

modernized, to keep pace with the changing economic, social and

cultural development of the country. If not done so it will not be in

the interest of the institution.

2. In this age of competition and awareness among the parents and

students to choose the best institute and career it is necessary to

provide them the latest facilities, modern infrastructure at reasonable

fees. With the introduction of private sector in the field of education

they provide better infrastructure facilities and career opportunities

because of their financial strength. Students are lured to these

institutes and are charged hefty amount in the name of fees.

3. The lack of fresh recruitment of faculty forces the institute to employ

guest faculty lecturers on hourly basis and their salaries are being

paid from the PTA fund (Parent Teacher Fund) which can otherwise

be used for development of the college and providing facilities to

students.

Criteria-Wise Inputs

CRITERION 1: CURRICULAR ASPECTS

The college was with a mission to provide a platform to the

students of the area for higher studies. Before establishment of this

college, students had to go to Jodhpur or Bikaner for higher studies for
