Nadia Wahdan was born in 1977 in Egypt. She studied at the Fine Arts School, Helwan University, in Cairo where she lives. Wahdan is an innovative mixed-media artist, who likes to challenge the status quo. She has developed her own signature style of mixing digital photography, hand coloring and sowing materials onto the canvas. Most of her work is neo-figurative and tackles identity and gender. In this new series, Nostalgia, Wahdan celebrates Egypt’s most successful female actresses who made Egyptian cinema, the Hollywood of the Middle-East. Using digital photography as her backdrop, Nadia Wahdan then hand colors part of the photograph and minutely sows ornaments onto the canvas. A flower might be added to the hair, a necklace might be sown over the neck, a piece of dentelle adorns a dress.TRANSCRIPT

Nadia Wahdan was born in 1977 in Egypt. She studied at the Fine Arts School, Helwan University, in Cairo and holds an MFA and a PhD. Wahdan is an innovative mixed-media artist, who likes to challenge the status quo. She has developed her own signature style of mixing digital photography, hand coloring and sowing materials onto the canvas. Most of her work is neo-figurative and tackles identity and gender. In this new series, Nostalgia, Wahdan celebrates Egypt’s most successful female actresses / heroes who made Egyptian cinema, the Hollywood of the Middle-East. Using digital photography as her backdrop, Nadia Wahdan then hand colors part of the photograph and minutely sows ornaments onto the canvas. By celebrating the most influential, sensual or comic actresses of the twentieth century, Wahdan choses sowing, one of the oldest known techniques associated with housewives, Wahdan reminds us that no matter how successful an actress is, she remains a simple woman. Nostalgia reminds us of how glorious Egypt was and inspires to be.

Founded in 2010, ARTTALKS | GALLERY | EGYPT has established itself as a highly selective search engine for Egypt’s next generation of contemporary artists and an authority on high quality secondary market works by twentieth century Egyptian masters and many of the most important artists working today. ArtTalks manages the estate of the late painter and sculptor Dr Sobhy Guirguis, a seminal artist who just passed away in January 2013. Part of ArtTalks income is then channeled into an Art Fund that we manage, to support high potential, young and struggling artists and to finance an extensive educational program aimed at growing the number of art collectors and art patrons in Egypt. We run a yearly curriculum on the history of Egyptian modern and contemporary art and invite scholars from abroad to give talks to the public. Founded by arts patron Fatenn Mostafa, former CEO of Gianaclis Vineyards for Beverages and former advisor to Bozar, Center of Fine Arts in Brussels, Belgium, the gallery is committed to the defense of freedom of art in Egypt and to strengthen Egypt's position on the regional art map.
