2005 SUMMER FESTIVITIES AT THE JCCCNATSU MATSURI AND BON ODORI FESTIVAL

We are very excited to announce that the JCCC, Toronto Buddhist Church and the New Japanese Canadian Association have joined forces once again to bring you the Natsu Matsuri and Bon Odori Festival. This will be the third year these festivities have come to the JCCC. Imagine a warm and sunny summer’s day, outdoors on the grounds of 6 Garamond Court, the smells, sights and sounds of a Japanese summer festival. Throughout the day you’ll be able to enjoy the entertainment, booths, events and delicious food that make a Japanese festival unique. Enjoy the wide variety of festival activities from the traditional summer dances to fishing for your goldfish in the kingyosukui. The Matsuri will culminate with the drawing of the JCCC’s Annual Trip to Japan Raffle 2005 winners and the presentation of the Toronto Buddhist Church’s annual Bon Odori. Scores of colourful yukata-clad dancers take you right to Japan with the Toronto version of one of the most significant festivals in Japan. NOSTALGIA NIGHT IIBack by popular demand following the overwhelming success of our first Nostalgia Night last year, the JCCC Heritage Committee is sponsoring Nostalgia Night II on Saturday June 25, 2005, from 3:00pm to 8:00pm. Please join us in remembering and celebrating our Nikkei heritage and learn more about the work of the JCCC’s ground breaking Japanese Canadian Legacy Project. Working in collaboration with Densho, the Japanese American Legacy Project in Seattle, and with assistance from the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, the JC Legacy Project’s goal is to create a digital archive of the Japanese Canadian experience for all to share. This important initiative of the JCCC will help record and preserve the stories of our unique community in Canada and will be an educational and cultural resource for future generations. Excerpts from the first oral histories filmed by the JC Legacy Project will be previewed at Nostalgia Night II. Nostalia Night II is an opportunity to reunite with old friends, to meet new friends and to enjoy great conversation, food and music. This evening guarantees a nostalgic look back. A SUMMER OF AKIRA KUROSAWA IN THE KOBAYASHI HALLThis summer we will be featuring two of Akira Kurosawa’s late period masterpieces, Kagemusha and Ran, as our Movie Night features.

Kagemusha – the Masterwork that Restored the Master’s ReputationSet in the late 16th century, Kagemusha centres on the Takeda clan, one of three warlord clans battling for control of Japan at the end of the feudal period. When Lord Shingen (Tatsuya Nakadai), head of the Takeda clan, is mortally wounded in battle and near death, he orders that his death be kept secret and that his “kagemusha”--or “shadow warrior”--take his place for a period of three years to prevent clan disruption and enemy takeover. The identical double is a petty thief (also played by Nakadai) spared from execution due to his uncanny resemblance to Lord Shingen--but his true identity cannot prevent the tides of fate from rising over the Takeda clan in a climactic scene of battlefield devastation. Through stunning visuals and meticulous attention to every physical and stylistic detail, this 1980 Kurosawa masterpiece restored the great director’s status as Japan’s greatest filmmaker. Ran – Kurosawa’s Final MasterpieceAs critic Roger Ebert observed in his original review of Ran, this epic tragedy might have been attempted by a younger director, but only the Japanese master Akira Kurosawa, who made the film at age 75, could bring the requisite experience and maturity to this stunning interpretation of Shakespeare’s King Lear. It’s a film for the ages--one of the few genuine screen masterpieces--and arguably serves as an artistic summation of the great director’s career. In this version of the Shakespeare tragedy, the king is a 16th century warlord (Tatsuya Nakadai as Lord Hidetora) who decides to retire and divide his kingdom evenly among his three sons. When one son defiantly objects out of loyalty to his father and warns of inevitable sibling rivalry, he is banished and the kingdom is awarded to his compliant siblings. The loyal son’s fears are valid: a duplicitous power struggle ensues and the aging warlord witnesses a maelstrom of horrifying death and destruction. Although the film is slow to establish its story, it’s clear that Kurosawa, who planned and painstakingly designed the production for 10 years

before filming began, was charting a meticulous and tightly formalized dramatic strategy. As familial tensions rise and betrayal sends Lord Hidetora into the throes of escalating madness, Ran (the title is the Japanese character for “chaos” or “rebellion”) reaches a fevered pitch through epic battles and a fortress assault that is simply one of the most amazing sequences on film. ORIGAMI WORKSHOPThe joy of origami is in creating something playful, decorative, or beautiful to give away as gifts by simply folding a piece of paper. JCCC EUCHRE NIGHT IS BACK!Spaces are limited! On Friday June 24, 2005 the JCCC will be hosting another Euchre night. This event brings together friends, fun and a little card playing finesse. REGISTER FOR KAMP KODOMO!Are you looking for a unique summer camp? Registration has started for Kamp Kodomo Summer 2005, a recreational, educational, and cultural program for children ages 6 to 12. JAPANESE COOKING CLASS“Chef Shoji” is offering a hands-on Japanese cooking course at the JCCC. Focusing on the taste, techniques and special ingredients that make Japanese cuisine unique, “Chef Shoji” wishes to show that Japanese food is easy to prepare and serve, also healthy and delicious.Instructor:“Chef Shoji” has been teaching cooking classes at the Canadian Japanese Cultural Centre in Hamilton for the past two years. Over this time, he built up quite a repertoire of Japanese recipes. He has recently developed some new and scrumptious recipes for Mochi and Manju (Japanese rice cake sweets).

Requirements:Valid JCCC membership.

Classes: 3 classes. Each class consists of 1 hour instruction and demonstration, 1 hour hands-on cooking and last hour for tasting and cleaning.

MANJU WORKSHOPThe ever-popular Manju (Japanese rice cake sweets) workshop is back! Chef Shoji will be conducting two hands-on workshops at the JCCC. Chef Shoji has been teaching at cooking classes at the Canadian Japanese Cultural Centre in Hamilton for the past two years. Over this time, he built up quite a repertoire of Japanese recipes. At this time, he will

reveal his secret 10-minute Manju recipe as well as some fresh ideas for delicious Japanese sweets and desserts.

Then, a few years later, as war clouds loom over the Pacific, seeing your mother leave on the last boat to Vancouver and being trapped in Japan with your father. Imagine as well, at the age of eighteen, being photographed in the uniform of a seaman of the Imperial Japanese Navy and being shipped off to see action aboard the heavy cruiser Maya in: Guadacanal, Solomon Islands, Kiska Island, Rabauf, Saipan and the Gulf of Leyte while surviving several sinkings. The JCCC Heritage Committee invites you to hear the extraordinary life of Harry Yoshida and his family. PRESERVATION AND CATALOGUING OF YOUR FAMILY’S ARTEFACTS AND HISTORY Dear Members of the JC Community,Over the last several years, the Japanese Canadian Legacy Project (“JCLP”), an initiative of the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre (“JCCC”) and its Heritage Committee, has been developing a digital archive in partnership with Seattle-based Densho, the Japanese American Legacy Project (www.densho.org). This digital archive will record for future generations, the lives of senior Japanese Canadians and their experiences before, during and after World War II. Video interviews are an exciting focus of this project, however primary documents from the early years of Japanese Canadian history will also be collected and catalogued. Our experiences with archiving photographs have impressed upon us the importance of these artefacts in reconstructing the story of Japanese Canadians. We have also realized that it is often a challenge to preserve these documents and while, for the time being, the JCLP is not in a position to collect and store this material itself, we wish to initiate a community wide project to collect and catalogue your own family’s records and photos into a family archive, before they are lost or destroyed. We expect to partner with an appropriate institution that will help us preserve, store and display these artefacts. We would like to ask each family to make all efforts to compile and preserve any mementos or documents of life before and during internment that they or their family may have in their possession. These may take the form of clothing and household items from the camps or photographs, films, letters, as well as printed materials such as paper clippings or government issued documents. The

only way that this facet of our history can be preserved is with the help of community members. Collected documents can be shared with family members which will be an important and enjoyable opportunity for the issei and nisei to educate younger family members. At a later date, there may be opportunity to include these artefacts in displays at the JCCC and in the digital archive being developed by the JCLP.

Here are some steps that your family should take:1. Collect material from storage and review them with your family. Identify and record the dates, places and names of people who are in photographs and films. The name of the photographer, if known, should be included.

2. Other non-documentary items of historical significance (clothing, household items) that help illustrate the JC experience in Canada, should be photographed and documented (for example, what is it, who owns it, why is it significant?)

3.Collected articles should be kept in a clean, dry environment that is not in direct lighting and is away from high temperatures. Copies of important documents should be made for safekeeping and stored at a different location from the originals. There are many varieties of digital scanners available for home personal computers. Although it is important to preserve original documents, these scanners make it easy produce digital copies.

4. A master list of your family’s artefacts and records should be kept and shared with family members identifying the items and indicating where they are stored for safekeeping, together with written instructions that such artefacts and records may be loaned to the JCCC for educational and historical purposes (including exhibition) and/or for inclusion in the JCPL’s digital archive.

NEW ARRIVAL AT THE GIFT SHOPNew Samurai DVD, Ronin GaiThe DVD of Kazuo Kuroki’s “Ronin Gai”, a 1990 samurai film, will be released on June 7. This film was produced in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the death of Shozo Makino, “the father of Japanese films”. “Ronin Gai” is set in the 1830s, during a period of great upheaval in Japanese society and it contains both drama as well as sword-fighting action. The DVD is in Japanese with English subtitles.

ARIGATO DAY 2005The JCCC Board of Directors will be hosting the annual Arigato Day on Sunday September 11, 2005. At this time, we want to be able to show our appreciation to all our volunteers who have helped the Centre in various ways throughout the year. The JCCC is so fortunate to have so many dedicated and talented supporters. The event this year will be in the fall, so please remember to mark this date on your calendars.

FAREWELL ALICEA respected and well-liked member of the JCCC family will be leaving us in June of this year. Alice Zhao, our Data Administrator, will be moving to Los Angeles as a result of her husband’s work transfer this summer. Alice has been with the JCCC since 1998 and her contribution has been invaluable. Her work ethic, attention to detail and flexibility are beyond compare. What we will miss even more than her fine work, however, is her calm, pleasant and charming personality. No matter what the crisis, Alice could be counted on to deal with it in a calm and professional manner. Alice was more than a co-worker - she has been a friend and a member of the JCCC family. We will miss her; we wish her all the best south of the border and we look forward to her return to Toronto in the years to come. Thank you Alice. Arigato, soshite otsukare sama. Mata oaishimasho!!

NEW WORKS FROM MARK YUNGBLUT DECORATE THE JCCC

For the past few months, Mark Yungblut displayed his astounding kiri-e work in the multi-purpose corridor. For the next 6 weeks we will be exhibiting a selection of his sketches. The following is Mark’s description of the work: While writing an essay about Japanese history in my last year of high school I came across a picture of Himeji Castle in one of the books I was reading. For some reason the picture struck me, and I kept looking at it again and again because it was so pleasing to me. At the time, I had taken a few art courses and knew that I had some talent and thought why not try and draw it. I had no idea it would turn out as well as it did, and it was from that drawing that I drew the motivation to do more works. My interest in drawing, as well as in Japan grew from that point on, culminating in the opportunity to visit Japan a few times, which gave me the subject matter for the drawings on the wall. In terms of the media used, all of the drawings are done in pencil and, where there is colour, pencil crayon. I like to use a lot of detail and I have found that pencil is the best way to do this. I’ve also found that it’s the cleanest, and easiest medium to control which also helps in creating detail. In addition to using pencils, an eraser and a paper stomp (used to make the shading more smooth), I also use a ruler alot in order to make sure that all of the walls and roofs are in proportion to one another when drawing buildings, as well as making straight lines. I apply the same method of measurement to other drawings, ensuring that every facial feature, body part, etc. is in its proper position. At first this involved a lot of trial and error, and luck, but I’ve become a lot better at it over time, which is reflected in the more recent drawings. I hope that you enjoy this display.

THE 2005 JCCC BAZAAR – BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER!This years annual Bazaar was a huge success! On Saturday May 7, the JCCC was filled with shoppers looking for great bargains and they were not disappointed. There was a multitude of items to bid on at the Silent Auction, a vast assortment of white/pink elephant items, Noritake dishware, logo ware, garden ware, plants, raffles and more. The food was amazing - sushi, mochi, chow mein, udon, tempura and delicious baked goods. The volunteers who helped at all of the different areas are to be commended for all their hard work! We rely so much on volunteers to make our events successful and every time we are amazed at the generosity and dedication from the community. In particular we would like to thank the Bazaar Chairpersons, Theresa Sano, Miki Kobayashi and Sharon Marubashi for their inexhaustible energy! Companies, corporations, organizations, community groups and churches, and individuals also donated generously once again this year. A huge thank you to all of you who helped to make this Bazaar one of the best ever!!!!

“LUNCHTIME VIDEO SCREENINGS” AT THE JAPAN INFORMATION CENTRE

By the Consulate General of JapanOnce a month, the Japan Information Centre (JIC) screens short video features on modern Japanese culture, society and other subjects in the JIC Event Room. Each English-language, lunch-hour screening (12:10pm to 12:45pm) features a regular showing of episodes from the series Japan Video Topics, as well as other culturally relevant videos in the JIC collection. 影武者（１９８０年）国家統一の気運が高まる戦国時代、その雄“武田信玄”は敵を欺くため、影武者を使ったと言われています。死刑執行寸前だった泥棒が、実は武田信玄に瓜二つだったことからこの物語は始まるのでした。ちなみに海外版は製作を、黒澤監督を師と仰ぐフランシ ス・コッポラ、ジョージ・ルーカスが引き受けることで、製作が実現化しました。

和食クッキングクラス和食に欠かせない味、テクニック、そして素材に焦点をあて、しょうじシェフが誰でも簡単に作れ、しかも健康的で美味しい和食のクッキングクラスを行います。しょうじシェフはハミルトンの日系文化会館で過去２年間クッキングクラスを教えてきました。レパートリーは幅広く、お饅頭なども得意としています。詳細、クラスを受講されたい方はJCCC４１６－４４１－２３４５またはjccc@jccc.on.caまでご連絡下さい。なお、クラスを受講するためにはJCCC会員であることが必要です。

ヘリテージスピーカーシリーズハリー吉田さんを迎えて

日系２世の吉田さんは１９３４年、１４歳の時にご両親と共に日本に渡りました。母親が単身バンクーバーへ戻ったあと、戦争が

勃発し、父親と日本に取り残され、１８歳の時に日本の海軍に入隊し、南太平洋各地で戦中を過ごしました。２００５年７月６日（水）、ヘリテージラウンジに吉田さんをお迎えして、彼の映画にもなりそうな波乱万丈な人生についてお話していただきます。時間は午後７時から午後８時まで、参加費は無料です。参加されたい方はJCCC４１６－４４１－２３４５またはjccc@jccc.on.caまで事前登録をお願いいたします。
