R+D+I is a strategic field of Navan0a aiming
at maintaining and increasing i ts
leadership posi0on in the interna0onal
market which is becoming increasingly
more compe00ve. Navan0a focuses this
will on implemen0ng a R+D+I program
which is oriented towards products and
processes, the acquisi0on of new enabling
techno log ies and the con0nuous
technology watch to consolidate its rank as
a reference European naval designer and

INVESTIGACIÓN Y DESARROLLO Product Strategy
• Within the new products area, Projects are oriented towards the
aOainment of efficient high-‐tech solu0ons adapted to the regula0ons
in force in order to meet the naval market present and future
requirements.
• The improvements in exis0ng products are aimed at developing new
specific technologies to be applied to a group of tradi0onal ships in
Navan0a but with designs that stand out from the competence and
that are more appealing for future customers in terms of efficiency
and performances.

INVESTIGACIÓN Y DESARROLLO Product Strategy
• As far as the Systems are concerned, apart from implemen0ng new
developments to expand the range of exis0ng products, the short life
cycle of Informa0on and Communica0on Technologies demands a
con0nuous engineering effort to update and refresh the technology
of our exis0ng Systems.

Ongoing R+D+I Projects in Navan0a Cartagena: • ALGORSUB Non lineal algorithms for submarine auto-‐
pilo0ng, SIMUSUB applica0on
• SRPRO Own noise sojware. • FORMSUB Forms and appendages in submarines
• MABSORB Defini0on and assembly procedures of
absorbent materials and acous0c insula0ons.
• SOWEC Weapon Handling and Discharge System (WHDS)
for various weapons and vehicles in submarines.
• DIRSUB Integra0on of the deployment and recovery
system for Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV) and
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV)
• RENACESOL New welding acceptance criteria in
submarine structures
Project Title: Non linear algorithms for submarine auto-‐pilo0ng, SIMUSUB
applica0on.
Acronym: ALGORSUB
Descrip+on: Development and tes0ng of auto-‐pilo0ng algorithms enabling the
control of a submarine with depth devia0ons less than one metre by working on
propeller, hydroplanes, blowing and ven0la0on.
Par+cipants: Navan0a Cartagena and TECH. UNIV. OF CARTAGENA

Project Title: Own noise sojware
Acronym: SRPRO
Descrip+on: Obtaining a sojware to manage the own noise-‐internal vibra0on
transfer to submarines pressure hull.
Extension of the tool for far-‐field radiated noise predic0on.

Project Title: Submarine forms
Acronym: FORMSUB
Descrip+on: Obtaining submarine forms series. Computa0onal analysis (CFD) of
different forms and appendage designs to achieve two series of submarine
forward forms. One based on ‘tear drop’ and the other on constant curvature. Achievement of a series of aj forms combined with sail shapes and the selected
planes configura0on (cross, x, inverted y).
Par+cipants: Navan0a Cartagena, Navan0a Madrid and CEHIPAR

Project Title : Defini0on and assembly procedures of absorbent materials and
acous0c insula0ons.
Acronym: MABSORB
Descrip+on: Development of absorbent and insula0ng 0les from poroelas0c
materials inserted in the surrounding fluid to reduce the target echo strength,
the radiated noise and the submarine own noise (+ passive shock wave mi0ga0on).

Project Title: Deployment and recovery of underwater and aerial vehicles from
an underwater plaoorm.
Acronym: DIRSUB
Descrip+on: The general aim of this project is to perform a successful integra0on of the
deployment and recovery processes for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) and unmanned
aerial vehicles (UAV) in one underwater plaoorm.
These technologies, including the system patented by SOWEC, will be extrapolated to equal-‐sized or
smaller submarines than S-‐80 being a demand increasingly present in interna0onal navies.
The launching and recovery system of unmanned vehicles will enable AUV and UAV to be steered
easily from an underwater plaoorm.
Par+cipants: Navan0a Cartagena, Nav. Madrid, FABA, UPCT and UNIOVI

Project Title: New welding acceptance criteria for submarine structures.
Acronyms: RENACESOL
Descrip+on: Crea0on of a methodology to analyze welding defects in submarines enabling to:
• Define acceptance criteria compa0ble with new Advanced Ultrasounds (AU) technologies. These techniques provide a beOer descrip0on of the size and loca0on of defects but not of the type (so possible cracks must be considered) • Increase defect tolerance in accordance with tradi0onal inspec0on methods. Along the lines of the works by the
UK Ministry of Defence.
