In this webinar, Dr. Charlotte Loppie will explore anti-Aboriginal racism in Canada – how to understand it in historical context, how it affects individuals and communities, and what programs, policies and strategies exist to combat it. Dr. Loppie will begin by describing the construction of race as a form of social hierarchy, followed by an overview of expressions of racism as well as the impact of lived and structural racism on First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples in Canada. Finally, Dr. Loppie will provide examples of efforts to address racism in Canada, including anti-racism interventions, anti-oppressive education and cultural competency, as well as anti-discrimination legislation.
Dr. Charlotte Loppie is a Professor in the School of Public Health and Social Policy, Faculty of Human and Social Development, University of Victoria, Director of the Centre for Aboriginal Health Research (UVIC) and Editor of the International Journal of Indigenous Health. Dr. Loppie has undertaken research and published in areas such as: Aboriginal health inequities, Aboriginal HIV/AIDS, social determinants of Aboriginal health, racism and cultural safety, cancer among Aboriginal peoples, Aboriginal ethics and research capacity building as well as the sexual and reproductive health of Aboriginal women.
