In 2008 and 2009 the Netherlands and Japan have been celebrating two milestones. The year 2008 marked the 150th anniversary of the establish-

ment of bilateral diplomatic relations, and in 2009 we have been commemorating the 400th anniversary of commercial relations, which date back

to 1609, when Tokugawa Ieyasu issued an official trade permit to the Netherlands.

2008年から2009年にかけて、日本とオランダは歴史の節目となるふたつの出来事を祝ってまいりました。2008年は日本とオランダの外交関係樹立150周年、そして2009年は二国間の通商関係が400周年の年でした。徳川家康がオランダに公式な通商許可を与えたのが1609年でした。

Forewordご挨拶

I am honoured to introduce to you a souvenir book, dedicated to the ‘2008-2009

celebrations’ of 150 years of modern diplomatic ties and the commemoration of the 400th

anniversary of commercial relations between Japan and the Netherlands.

The relations between Japan and the Netherlands started in 1600 when the Dutch ship ‘De

Liefde’ stranded on the coast of Oita. They were set on an official footing when Tokugawa

Ieyasu issued a trade pass to the Netherlands in 1609. Since then, our relationship has

expanded into many areas. To celebrate this, more than 300 events have taken place

throughout Japan and the Netherlands, covering areas such as diplomacy, culture,

economy, agriculture, science and technology and sports.

This souvenir book portrays the many wonderful events of the ‘2008-2009 celebrations’.

This colourful overview testifies to the depth and breadth of our relations. It also brings to

light that there are ample opportunities for even stronger ties in the future. I would like to

take this opportunity to thank all of you, who by your initiatives, participation and support

have made these two special years an unforgettable experience.

This souvenir book is not the end of the celebration years, but rather the beginning of our

fifth century of friendship.

日本とオランダの外交関係樹立150周年及び通商開始400周年を記念し開催された「日本オランダ年2008-2009」の記念冊子を、皆様のお手元にお届けすることが出来て大変光栄に存じます。

日本とオランダの関係は、1600年オランダ船リーフデ号が大分県の沿岸に漂着したことに始まります。1609年には徳川家康から通商許可が与えられ、両国の本格的な交流が始まり、それを機に両国の関係は様々な分野へと拡大をして参りました。これを祝し「日本オランダ年2008-2009」が開催され、外交・文化・経済・農業・科学技術、スポーツなど多岐にわたる分野で300を超えるイベントが日本とオランダ両国で実施されました。

この記念冊子には「日本オランダ年2008-2009」で開催された素晴らしいイベントの数々が盛り込まれています。色とりどりのページをめくれば、日蘭関係の奥深さと広がりが感じられ、また将来その絆を更に強固にするための機会にあふれていることに気付きます。

この場をお借りして、様々なイニシアティブを発揮し、イベントへの参加・支援を通じて、この祝賀年を記憶に残る2年間にして下さった皆様に心から感謝を申し上げます。

この記念冊子は、祝賀年の終わりではなく、我々の友情が5世紀目を迎える新たな始まりだと言えましょう。

1927年、オランダ　ユトレヒト生まれ。 絵本作家・グラフィックデザイナーとして世界的に活躍。

その暖かみのある手描きの線、鮮やかな色使い、観る者の想像力に訴えるシンプルで大胆な構成の作品で、世界中の子供から大人まで幅広く愛されている。 1951年からペーパーバック「ブラック・ベア」シリーズのブックカバーのデザインを開始、1953年に絵本「りんごちゃん」を、さらに1955年には代表作であるミッフィーシリーズの初版本を発表して以来、120タイトルの絵本を刊行。全世界で40カ国語以上に翻訳され、8500万部以上のロングセラー。 日本でも1964年「ちいさなうさこちゃん」（福音館書店刊）出版以来、子供がはじめてであう絵本として親しまれ、日本のみで5000万部以上の絵本を刊行。1997年からはNHK教育テレビにて平面アニメーションが放映され、2003年からは立体人形アニメーションもスタート。また絵本創作を中心に活動しながらもユニセフや赤十字など、社会活動の為のポスターも手がけている。

1990年「こぐまのボリス」にてオランダ書籍宣伝協会より「金の絵筆賞」をはじめ、その後も数々の賞を受賞。2001年には、オランダの一般市民に与えられる最高の王室勲章「オランダ獅子勲章コマンデュール賞」を受勲する。 2006年にはユトレヒトに彼の作品を専門に展示する美術館「ディック・ブルーナ・ハウス」がオープン。 80歳を迎えた2007年には、ユトレヒト市より市民最高の栄誉である「ゴールドメダル」を受勲し、翌年に控える記念イヤー「日本オランダ年2008-2009」のために公式マスコットとなる、日蘭の旗を手にした子供のイラストをてがけた。 2009年、120冊目の絵本「うさこちゃんのおじいちゃんへのおくりもの」を日蘭同時発売。

そして2010年、ミッフィーは55回目のお誕生日を迎えます。

Dick Bruna was born in 1927 in Utrecht, the Netherlands and is one of the

most famous creators of picture books in the world.

Being known for his use of distinguished hand-drawn lines, vivid colors and

simple but inspiring compositions, his work is admired by people of all gen-

erations around the globe.

In 1951 he started to illustrate the covers of many paperbacks in the “Zwarte

Beertjes” detective series. Since then he has published 120 different titles of

picture books including “the apple” in 1953 and the first issue of “miffy” in

1955. His works have been translated into 40 different languages and sold

85 million copies up to date.

Since its launch in Japan in 1964, “miffy” (“nijntje”) has sold more than 50

million copies and since 1997 Japanese NHK Educational Channel has been

airing “miffy” on TV.

In addition to the creation of picture books, Dick Bruna has also been in-

volved in social activities such as producing posters for Unicef and Red Cross.

He has won many prizes including “De Gouden Penseel (The Golden Brush)”

in 1990 for boris bear. Dick Bruna House, a museum dedicated to his work,

opened in Utrecht in 2006.

When he turned 80 years old in 2007 he was honored the gold medal of the

city of Utrecht. He also designed the official mascot for “Nederland in Japan

2008-2009”, a small boy holding the flags of the Netherlands and Japan.

In 2009 the 120th picture book, “een cadeau voor opa pluis”, was released

in Dutch and Japanese.

In 2010 miffy will celebrate her 55th birthday."

Yokohama I 17 June 2008, Yokohama Minato Mirai HallThe Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1918 and under the leadership of the celebrated Russian conductor Valery Gergiev, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra developed into an orchestra of worldwide reputation. At the start of the 2008-2009 season, Yannick Nézet-Séguin succeeded Valery Gergiev as Music Director.

In June 2008, the Orchestra embarked on their first tour with Yannick Nézet-Séguin, performing at the Yokohama Minato Mirai Hall on 17 June with the superstar pianist Yundi Li, the youngest winner of the prestigious International Chopin Competition.

横浜 | 2008年6月17日, 横浜みなとみらいホール1918年に設立されたロッテルダム・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団は、ロシア人指揮者ヴァレリー・ゲルギエフ音楽監督兼主席指揮者のもと世界的な名声を確固たるものとしました。2008／09年シーズンから、ヴァレリー・ゲルギエフの後任としてヤニク・ネゼ＝セガンが音楽監督に就任しました。

そして、2008年6月ヤニク・ネゼ＝セガンのもと初のツアーを開始し、ショパン国際コンクールの最年少優勝者であるユンディ・リをピアニストに迎え、6月17日横浜みなとみらいホールにて演奏会を開催しました。

Yokohama, Osaka, Tokyo | June – September 2008After several stops in Europe and Asia, the EU Herd of Cows came to Japan as “Oranda COW Art”! They represent the 27 Member States of the European Union and the European Commission.The Herd of Cows was created in 2004 as the result of an initiative of the Neth-erlands Embassy in Prague. All of the life-size fibreglass cows were painted by artists and school children, using typical national symbols. The cows were exhibited at the Yokohama Port Town Festival (14-22 June), Osaka King Festival (26 July – 3 August) and Cow Parade 2008 – Marunouchi Oazo (5 – 21 September).

横浜, 大阪, 東京 | 2008年6月 – 9月ヨーロッパとアジア諸国の各地で人気を博した欧州連合27加盟国と欧州委員会を表現した「EU Herd of Cows (EUの牛の群れ)」が、「オランダCOWアート」として日本に上陸しました。この｢EUの牛の群れ｣は、2004年に駐プラハ オランダ大使館の企画から誕生しました。ファイバーグラスで創られた実物大の牛は、各国のアーティストと子供達の手により、その国を表現するデザインが施されています。日本では、横浜ポート・タウン・フェスティバル(6月14日〜22日)、オーサカキング2008(7月26日〜8月3日)、カウパレード東京　丸の内2008（9月5日〜21日）で展示されました。

Tokyo | 14 October 2008, Blue Note TokyoThe Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw is the leading top-class big band of the Netherlands and its 18 members are the most talented jazz musicians in the country. Founded in 1996, the orchestra attracts yearly more than 35,000 visitors. In October 2008 the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw made their first tour in Japan with unforgettable performances at Blue Note Tokyo.

東京 | 2008年10月14日, ブルーノート東京ジャズ・オーケストラ・オブ・ザ・コンセルトヘボウは、18人の実力派ミュージシャンで構成されたオランダを代表するトップクラスのビック・バンドです。1996年の発足以来、毎年3万5千人以上がコンサートに訪れています。

2008年10月、ブルーノート東京で記憶に残る日本初の演奏をしました。

Tokyo | August – December 2008, Tokyo Metropolitan Art MuseumVermeer and the Delft Style was one of the most successful art exhibitions in Japan attracting 934,222 visitors between 2 August and 14 December 2008. With 7 Vermeer paintings and 17 works of other great Dutch masters of the Delft style like Carel Fabritius and Pieter de Hooch, it was the largest Vermeer exhibition ever in Japan.

On 3 December a nocturne was organized for 500 guests of “Nederland in Japan”.

東京 | 2008年8月– 12月, 東京都美術館2008年8月2日から12月14日にかけて開催された「フェルメール展　光の天才画家とデルフトの巨匠たち」には、93万4222人が来場し、最も盛況を呈した展覧会の一つとなりました。フェルメールの作品7点に加え、カレル・ファブリティウスやピーテル・デ・ホーホなどデルフト・スタイルの巨匠たちの17作品が一同に会した同展覧会は、日本で開催された最大規模のフェルメール展となりました。

12月3日には、日本オランダ年2008-2009のゲスト500人を招いた特別内覧会「ノクターン」が開催されました。

Tokyo | January – April 2009, Hibiya PatioSince 1990 the Dutch artist Theo Jansen has been creating new forms of life: beach animals. These animals are large skeletons made of yellow plastic tubes that are able to walk on the wind, a fusion of art and engineering.

From 17 January till 12 April 2009 the exhibition at Hibiya Patio attracted more than 30,000 visitors. On 4 March a private viewing was organized for “Nederland in Japan”.

東京 | 2008年1月– 4月, 日比谷パティオオランダ人アーティスト、テオ・ヤンセンは、1990年以来、新たな形の生物ビーチアニマルズを生み出してきました。黄色のプラスチック製チューブから成る大きな骨格をもち、風力を利用して歩き出すこれらの動物は、アートとエンジニアリングの融合です。

2009年1月17日から4月12日にかけて日比谷パティオで開催された展覧会には3万人以上が訪れました。また、3月4日には、日本オランダ年2008-2009のゲストを招いて特別内覧会が開催されました。

Tokyo | 15 April, residence of the embassy of the NetherlandsOn 15 April 2009 the official name of the mascot was announced to the press: Nio-kun! Because the mascot has been designed by Dick Bruna, the famous Dutch creator of picture books and father of Miffy, we asked schoolchildren of Minato-ward in Tokyo to propose names.

The three schoolchildren who proposed Nio-kun -606 names were sent in- were bestowed with the title of Junior Goodwill Ambassador.

東京 | 4月15 日, オランダ王国大使館　大使公邸2009年4月15日、記者発表会で、公式マスコットの名前が「ニオくん」と発表されました。マスコットはミッフィーの生みの親でもあるオランダ人の著名な絵本作家ディック・ブルーナ氏がデザインし、東京都港区の小学生から名前を募りました。

606の応募が寄せられ、ニオ君くんの名付け親である3人の小学生が「日蘭ジュニア親善大使」の称号を授与されました。

Yokohama | 1 August 2009, Yokohama Pier No. 5On 1 August 2009, “Nederland in Japan” organized a cocktail party for 200 guests on the Kankou-maru in Yokohama. This date was chosen because it coincided with the 23th Kanagawa Newspaper Fireworks, giving all guests stunning views of the fireworks from the boat’s deck.

The Kankou-maru was originally a Dutch warship presented in 1855 by the Dutch King, Willem III, to the Japanese government. The replica of the Kankou-maru (65.8 meters, 250 passengers) was built in 1987 in the Netherlands and is currently used as a tourism ship at “Huis Ten Bosch” in Nagasaki..

横浜 | 2009年8月1日, 横浜新港5号2009年8月1日、日本オランダ年2008-2009のゲスト200人を招いて横浜港に停泊中の観光丸で船上カクテルパーティーが開催されました。第23回神奈川新聞花火大会の開催日に合わせて開催されたパーティーで、ゲストは船上から迫力ある花火を楽しみました。

軍艦であった観光丸は、1855年オランダ王国ウィレム3世により日本政府に贈呈されました。その復元船（全長65.8m、可能収容数250名）は、1987年オランダで起工され、現在は長崎のハウステンボスで観光船として活用されています。

Tokyo | 5-6 September 2009, Tokyo International Forum (Plaza)In the weekend of 5-6 September “Dutch Jazz Garden” was held at the plaza of Tokyo International Forum. More than 5000 jazz enthusiasts attended the jazz concerts of Benjamin Herman Quartet, New Cool Collective, Peter Beets Trio, Rob van Bavel Trio “The Ghost, the King and I” and Tineke Postma Quartet.

Dutch Jazz Garden was a side event of Japan’s leading Jazz happening “TOKYO JAZZ” visited by 19,000 jazz lovers. At the Gala Night of TOKYO JAZZ (4 Sept.) the “Dutch Jazz Experience” was organized with leading Dutch jazz musician Wouter Hamel.

東京 | 2009年9月5日-6日, 東京国際フォーラム1階地上広場 2009年9月5日と6日の週末に、東京国際フォーラムの地上広場にてDutch Jazz Gardenが開催されました。 ベンジャミン・ハーマン・カルテット、ニュー・クール・コレクティヴ、ピーター・ビーツ・トリオ、ロブ・ヴァン・バヴェル・トリオ “The Ghost, the King and I”、ティネカ・ポスマ・カルテットの熱演を、5000人を超えるジャズファンが堪能しました。

Dutch Jazz Gardenは、1万9000人もの来場者が訪れた東京Jazzの関連イベントとして開催されました。また9月4日の東京ジャズのガラナイトでは、「Dutch Jazz Experience」としてオランダの男性ジャズ・ヴォーカルをリードするウーター・ヘメルのステージが繰り広げられました。

Tokyo | October 2009, Tokyo StationDuring October 2009 the Marunouchi and Yaesu sides of Tokyo Station have been wrapped up with a huge billboard of 360sqm in total surface. The collage expressed 400 years of relations between the Netherlands and Japan, covering history, tourism, design and transport. The graphic design blended the well-known Dutch icons with various images of famous persons and objects of the Netherlands.

Tokyo Station is the sister station of Amsterdam Station, making it the perfect location for this unique and large outdoor promotion.

東京 | 2009年10月, JR東日本東京駅 2009年10月、東京駅八重洲口及び丸の内口が、全部で360㎡にも及ぶ巨大な看板で覆われました。歴史、観光、デザイン、交通をテーマに、日蘭の400年に渡る関係が、オランダを代表する著名人や出来事の画像やグラフィックを活用したコラージュで表現されました。

アムステルダム中央駅と姉妹駅であるJR東日本東京駅は、このユニークで大掛かりな屋外プロモーションに最適な場所となりました。

Tokyo | March – April 2009 400 years of trade relations between the Netherlands and Japan; a great occasion to time trip and go on a search for the Netherlands in Tokyo! In March and April 2009 “Nederland in Japan” has teamed up with Let’s Enjoy Tokyo, a web-platform about leisure in Tokyo attract-ing monthly more than 2.5 million visitors! Plenty of great prizes could be won online and airline tickets to the Netherlands were given away with the photo contest! “Nederland in Japan” was also the main feature on the posters of Let’s Enjoy Tokyo in Tokyo metro stations and trains. 東京 | 2009年3月– 4月日蘭の通商関係400年となる2009年は、東京にあるオランダを見つけるまたとない機会でした。2009年3月から4月にかけて、日本オランダ年2008-2009は、毎月250万人以上が訪れる東京のおでかけ情報を提供するウェブサイトLet’s Enjoy Tokyoと協力しました。豪華賞品のプレゼントやオランダ行航空券が当たる写真コンテストが同ウェブサイト上で展開されました。また、東京メトロの各駅や電車内に掲出されたLet’s Enjoy Tokyoのポスターでも、日本オランダ年2008-2009が大々的に紹介されました。

were accredited by the Dutch embassy and could use the official mascot.
