Nella generale attitudine delle ultime generazioni di progettisti, particolarmente quelle italiane (se ha ancora un senso valersi di quest’aggettivazione per connotare un qualche residuo di riconoscibilità), sembra farsi strada, tra alcune difficoltà, una nuova forma di attenzione verso un dialogo ravvicinato tra l’architettura prefigurata e una nuova consapevolezza del quadro contestuale in cui si viene operando. Si avverte nelle ricerche più avanzate una salutare insofferenza per l’assunzione dei modelli affluenti imbanditi da ambigui paladini che da troppo tempo cavalcano dissennatamente la realtà contemporanea, nei casi migliori ostentando un ardito cinismo occultato sotto sontuosi paludamenti formali dai costi ormai proibitivi per economie in crisi evidente e in quelli ordinari mostrando la banalità greve della ripetizione acritica dell’identico.Per quel che mi riguarda non posso che rallegrarmi di questa diversa temperie appena avvertibile ma già espressiva nei lavori di alcuni gruppi emergenti.

In the general attitude of the last generations of architects, especially Italian ones (if it still makes sense to use this adjective to indicate some trace of recognisability) there seems to advance, in spite of some difficulties, a new kind of attention for a close dialogue between the planned architecture and a new awareness of the contextual scenario in which one is operating.In the most advanced research one observes a healthy intolerance of the assumptions of affluent models presented by ambiguous champions who have for too long senselessly ridden the wave of the contemporary reality, in the best cases flaunting an impudent cynicism veiled by sumptuous formal embellishments whose costs have by now become unsustainable for an economy in evident crisis, and in the ordinary ones revealing the oppressive banality of an uncritical repetition of identical elements. As far as I am concerned, I can only welcome this change in climate, which is only just perceptible but already explicit in the works of some emergent groups.

LA MISURA DEL VUOTO THE MEASURE OF THE VOID

Serrata da una cinta muraria medievale ancora intatta, racchiusa all’interno di un impianto urbano in cui i vuoti – in origine orti – appaiono ancora prevalenti rispetto alla densità dell’edificato, Piazza Garibaldi rappresenta un episodio importante nella riqualificazione del centro storico di Lastra a Signa. Questo ampio spazio, situato in posizione baricentrica all’interno della figura urbana, non rappresenta soltanto la centralità, geometrica, del piccolo nucleo, ma ha il privilegio di poter dialogare con una serie di elementi contestuali che, come tracce, anche latenti, emergono indifferentemente dall’intorno. Tra questi, la relazione della piazza con i tracciati urbani esistenti e con il paesaggio circostante, la qualità architettonica degli edifici che vi si prospettano e, non ultimi, i lievi dislivelli che restituiscono una sottile corrispondenza con l’elegante sfondo collinare diventano gli elementi informatori del progetto. In questo intervento non si è ricercato l’inserimento e la sovrapposizione di un’ulteriore figura, ma, piuttosto, si sono volute individuare nuove relazioni tra gli elementi

Encircled by a still intact belt of Medieval walls, enclosed within an urban plan whose voids – originally kitchen gardens – still appear to prevail on the density of the built tissue, Piazza Garibaldi represents an important episode in the upgrading of the historical centre of Lastra a Signa. This ample space located in the centre of gravity of the urban plan not only represents the geometric centrality of the small nucleus; it also has the privilege of being able to dialogue with a series of contextual elements that, as traces – also latent – emerge indifferently from the surroundings. Among these, the relations between the square and the existing urban traces and the surrounding landscape, the architectural quality of the buildings facing it and, last but not least, the slight differences in level that subtly echo the elegant backdrop of hills are among the elements that have inspired the project. In this project we have not sought to insert or superimpose an additional form, but rather to identify new relations between the existing elements, conceptually transforming the static space of the composition into the dynamic space of the

LA SCELTA DI OPERARE UTILIZZANDO MATERIALI NATURALI E A BASSO IMPATTO CONTRIBUISCE ALL’INTEGRAZIONE DEL PROGETTO NEL PARTICOLARE CONTESTO STORICO E PAESAGGISTICO E CONFERISCE ALL’INTERVENTO UN CARATTERE QUASI “ATEMPORALE”. Neostudio nasce dall’incontro tra Eleonora Burlando e Riccardo Miselli, architetti e dottori di ricerca in progettazione architettonica, che, a partire dal 2002, orientano la propria attività nella definizione di nuovi assetti della realtà contemporanea, riferendosi a un repertorio trasversale alle figure dell’arte, dell’architettura e del paesaggio. Neostudio ha sviluppato diversi progetti di spazi pubblici ed edifici in Italia, molti dei quali a seguito di concorsi di idee e di progettazione. Tra i più importanti si segnalano la riqualificazione delle aree periferiche del Comune di Prato (2003) e del centro storico di Lastra a Signa (FI, 2004), la valorizzazione dell’area costiera tra Quinto e Nervi (GE, 2007), il complesso di opere pubbliche in Via delle Vigne a Roma (2008), la riqualificazione paesaggistica attorno al Duomo di Monreale (PA, 2010), l’allestimento del Museo Enrico Caruso a Lastra a Signa (FI, 2010) e il ridisegno di Viale Mazzini a Chiari (BS, 2011). Il progetto per Piazza Garibaldi a Lastra a Signa ottiene nel 2008 il premio IQU – Innovazione e Qualità Urbana e nel 2012 il Premio AT12, categoria Opera Prima. Gli esiti progettuali di Neostudio sono stati pubblicati su riviste e volumi, anche

Neostudio was founded by Eleonora Burlando and Riccardo Miselli, architects who both hold a PhD in architectural planning; since 2002 they have focused their work on the redesign of the contemporary reality on the basis of a repertory combining the figures of art, architecture and the landscape. Neostudio has designed numerous public spaces and buildings in Italy, many of them after winning idea and design competitions. Among the most important we may mention the upgrading of the peripheral areas of the Municipality of Prato (PO, 2003) and of the historical centre of Lastra a Signa (FI, 2004), the redesign of the coastal area between Quinto and Nervi (GE, 2007), the series of public works in Via delle Vigne in Rome (RM, 2008), the upgrading of the area surrounding the Cathedral of Monreale (PA, 2010), the exhibition design of the Enrico Caruso Museum in Lastra a Signa (FI, 2010) and the redesign of Viale Mazzini in Chiari (BS, 2011). The project for Piazza Garibaldi in Lastra a Signa was awarded the IQU – Innovation and Urban Quality prize in 2008 and the AT12 Prize, First Work category, in 2012.The realized works of Neostudio have been published in magazines and volumes, also international, including “Casabella”, “C3”, “d’Architettura”,

internazionali, tra cui “Casabella”, “C3”, “d’Architettura”, oltreché sui volumi Progetti di giovani architetti italiani della collana lineaGiArch, edizioni Utet Scienze Tecniche, volume 1 anno 2010 e volume 3 anno 2012.Da sempre interessati a coniugare la pratica professionale con la ricerca scientifica, entrambi i soci sono impegnati in attività legate allo studio e alla diffusione della cultura architettonica contemporanea. Eleonora Burlando è rivolta alla cura e organizzazione di progetti culturali. In particolare, si è occupata della mostra “Costruire le modernità. Ignazio Gardella architetto” patrocinata dalla DARC, collaborando anche alla cura dell’allestimento e del catalogo edito da Electa nel 2007 e ha curato il volume internazionale exploring Contemporary age, edizioni List e Actar, 2010.Riccardo Miselli ha svolto attività di tutoring e didattica all’interno di laboratori di progettazione e workshop nazionali e internazionali all’interno di diversi contesti accademici tra cui IUAV, con i laboratori estivi del 2007 e 2008, e presso Florida International University. Dal 2010 è docente a contratto presso la Facoltà di Architettura di Genova dove è titolare di un Laboratorio di Progettazione.

She has, in particular, curated the exhibition “Building modernity. Ignazio Gardella architect”, held under the aegis of DARC, including the planning of the exhibition and the design and editing of the catalogue, published by Electa in 2007, and she has edited the international volume exploring Contemporary age, published by List and Actar, 2010. Riccardo Miselli has acted as tutor and taught in architecture courses as well as national and international workshops, cooperating with various academic institutions, including the IUAV and the summer workshops held by it in 2007 and 2008, and Florida International University. He has been temporary lecturer at the architecture faculty of the University of Genoa, where he teaches architectural design, since 2010.
