In my newsletters you’ve heard of some NJDB members such as Governor Sam Levisay and LTG Brooke Willemstynn. Since not all of you can make it to district

events I’d like to introduce some of our other board members (more to come in the future). Enjoy!

Meet LTG of Division 17 Jae Shin! I got the pleasure of meeting her at Key Leader 2013 and she is hilarious. She likes Pinterest and wearing ties to our board functions. She’s chair of the Fall Rally Program Committee and is very artsy too. She’s very smart and outgoing and loves to play her music. She can sing and play the guitar and saxophone. She goes to Tenafly High School and is a senior!

Meet our District Treasurer Daniel McCormack. He is actually part of Division 9 and is a senior at MAST like myself [I’ve actually been friends with dan since we were seven :)]. He lives on a farm and is super hard working. He loves talking about farm stuff 24/7 and likes our NJROTC and aspires to go to the Naval Academy. He’s chair of the Fall Rally Registration Committee and is one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet!

Meet the new LTG of Division 8, Pearl Polito! I am so excited to start working with her and her neighboring division! She is a senior at Jackson Memorial High School. She loves the arts and is involved in a lot of musical theater and plays! She wants to go to college for the arts as well. She has been in Key Club all four years and spends her weekends doing service projects with her friends!

Time to celebrate because Key Club International has a new nation: China! KCI now has 33 countries in its organization. The first chartered Key Club in China, which is

located in Nanjing, already has more that 90 members! Congrats China! I can’t wait to see

what wonderful work they do!

Welcome China!

als Challenge Over the summer, the world was overtaken by the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. If nominated, you had 24 hours to either donate to the ALS

Association or dump a bucket of ice water on yourself. This challenge raised millions of dollars for the ALS Association. This organization works towards finding a cure for this terrible disease. What is ALS? Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Over time, the disease makes one eventually lose complete loss

of control of their body: those affected can’t even speak. The deterioration of the body eventually leads to death. There is no cure.

How can my club help the ALS Foundation? How can my club save many lives? Your club can hold any sort of fundraiser that tends to be successful for your individual club. Whether it is a bake sale, car wash, etc., any sort of funds you can raise are very much appreciated. Want to do something really cool though? Why not have a school wide ALS ice bucket challenge? Designate a day where the school will go outside where the challenge will take place. During the days preceding the challenge have Key Clubbers run a stand during lunches or after school where they will collect donations and give a wristband (so you don’t have any non-donators participating) to those who will be able to participate. On the designated day, have those who donated come onto the field with their buckets (can be brought from home or donated) and complete the challenge. What a great way to raise money for such a worthy cause. Please contact your LTG with any questions regarding the ALS Association or the project.

DPS September Newsletter Article Salutations, New Jersey District! Each year, the first week of November marks Key Club Week! Key Club Week, November 3-7 this year, allows clubs to show off their Key Club spirit and make it a household name. Much like Eliminate Week, each day in Key Club Week is assigned a theme. From hosting a service project with local K-Family clubs, to bringing a friend to a Key Club meeting, Key Club Week is a great way to promote Key Club and the Eliminate project. Flyers for Key Club Week, which will include all necessary information, will be available shortly. Keep your eye out for the flyers from your respective Lieutenant Governor and make sure to use the official hashtag, #KeyClubWeek! If you want to get a head start on planning your events for this week, a list of suggestions has been posted at http://www.keyclub.org/service/kcw.aspx. Of course, spreading the word about the Eliminate Project is vital in this final year of the campaign. To promote fundraising towards the New Jersey District’s goal, $109,325.15, and to promote awareness about Maternal and Neonatal tetanus (MNT), the New Jersey District will host a series of volleyball tournaments, each called the Eliminathon. Winners from the divisional level will qualify to compete at the district level and determine the best of the best players of the New Jersey District! Any high schooler can participate in the tournament by forming a group of 6 players at the divisional level. Any one can come out and support your teams. Once you receive a date and time, invite all of your friends to come and spectate! More information about the Eliminathon will be released shortly. Keep an eye out for flyers sent out by your Lieutenant Governor. We hope to see you at this year’s Eliminathon! Yours in Caring and Service, District Project Steering Committee Co-Chairpersons LTG Division 20 Aleena Kazmi LTG Division 11 Farwa Shakeel

This year’s fall Regional Training Conferences were a huge success and the New Jersey District Board is very happy! The first fall RTC was central, and was held at Vorhees High School on September 13th from 9am-1pm. We had four sessions for these RTCs, sessions alpha to omega — since the

theme was Greek/Roman Mythology. I was happy that officers from MAST and Red Bank Regional attended! I had a great time running the President and You, Your Divison, and Your LTG workshops with my fellow board members. Egg Harbor Township High School held our southern RTC on September 14th from 9am-1pm. Although I could not attend, I heard it went really well and I am glad that everyone had a great time! The new LTG of Division 1 Angela Becker was in attendance and she got to meet the board and this year’s Key Clubbers! The northern RTC was September 20th at Parssipany Hills High School from 9am-1pm and over 150 people were in attendance! Division 9 was represented again by MAST and all the High Technology officers! I was so pleased that I got to meet the new LTG of Division 8, Pearl Polito, who is so nice! I’m really excited that we’ll be next to each other at all district board events! All the RTCs ended with a provided lunch and a fun Key Club raffle. The luckiest winners were given $50 off of District Convention, so congratulations to all the winners! Both spring and fall RTCs have taken the NJDB and NJ Key Clubbers all over New Jersey this year and I’m sad that they’ve come to an end but I am super excited for Fall Rally,Key Leader, and District Convention!

amanda’s healing hearts Everyone in this world encounters a great struggle at some point, and for Amanda Librizzi, that was at age 16, when she was diagnosed with congenital heart disease. This disease means that there are problems with the structure of the heart, that occur before birth but people are often not diagnosed until after childhood due to lack of signs and symptoms. Treatment depends on the type and severity of the defect. Amanda was brought to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and a mere ten days later, her two sisters were diagnosed with the same congenital abnormality.

Amanda was touched by the children’s stories at CHOP. At only five and six years old, the children were so strong and had inspiring stories. When she left CHOP, Amanda wanted to give the children reasons to smile. So she started a non-profit organization called Amanda’s Healing Hearts, which has brought over $25,000 worth of toys, DVDs, and gifts to hospitalized children. Now at 21, Amanda sees how she was able to turn something that started as a struggle into something helpful for other people. Every Christmas, Amanda and her organization brings presents and toys to the kids at CHOP that are not able to go home for the holiday season. They rely strictly on donations of money and toys to complete their service so if you would like to donate please contact me since the holiday season is quickly approaching! I have had the privilege of knowing Amanda’s brother, Nate Librizzi, who just graduated from my school. He is extremely caring just like Amanda and always made sure to spread the word about his sister’s organization. Even though Nate has now graduated, a sophomore at my school, Mick Zimmerman, who is great friends with the Librizzis, continues to spread the word about Amanda’s Healing Hearts.

All donations can be sent to 40 Main Street in Manasquan
