During a recent trip to Antarctica on the National Geographic Explorer, Patti Lindsley Fedler, ’76, and her husband, Joe Fedler, ’77, of Sedona, Ariz., discovered that several OSU-educated experts were aboard. Joe Holliday, ’83, and Andy Szabo, ’12, were naturalists on the ship and Dr. Dean Gushee, ’83, was the ship physician.

“We enjoyed lectures by Joe Holliday (ice caps and glaciers), Andy Szabo (humpback whales of the Southern Hemisphere), and Dr. Dean (fascinating National Geographic article on emperor penguins and seals),” she wrote.

Szabo directs the Alaska Whale Foundation and is a courtesy faculty member at OSU’s Marine Resource Management Program. Holliday is a geology and oceanography professor at El Camino College in Torrance, Calif., where he also directs the honors program. Gushee is medical director and chief of emergency services at Mason General Hospital in Shelton, Wash.

After figuring out their connections to OSU, they decided a photo was in order — in front of a Beaver orange lifeboat.

“And then,” she wrote, “with all the activities on the ship it took us four days to get the picture!”

Cake lady’s wedding cakes

come with advice

Known as “the cake lady” in Central Oregon for her delectable and beautiful cakes and cupcakes, Linda Porfily Hickman, ’63, ’65, dispenses baked goodness and counseling as she runs e Cake Lady Shoppe in Bend with her daughter, Deanna Kinsey.

Her husband, Gene Hickman, ’64, ’66, is a retired rangeland conservationist who works as the bakery’s fix-it guy, transportation foreman and occasional barista. He also has consulting work researching vegetation in southwest Oregon at the time of the early settlers.

Which college to attend wasn’t much of a decision in Linda’s family.

“My dad’s brother, second brother, third brother, and aunt went to Oregon State,” she said.

“My uncle was Frank Porfily, a (Beaver) football player in the ’30s. He got sick and three of the coaches came over the mountain to visit. He was that kind of a person; he was the top of the pile. And when they left, two days later he died. He had pneumonia and it backfired. So that meant a lot to us, that they would come see him.”

She majored in education for both of her degrees. She and Gene were campus sweethearts.

“We met at the end of our sophomore year at OSU. For our first date, he was two hours late.” she said. “I was born and raised on a ranch on the other side of Prineville and I learned from my momma how to be patient. So I waited.”

e bakery is a labor of love, but not the only job Linda remembers with fondness.

As a student, “I got a good job in the Women’s Building. I got 50 cents an hour to hand out towels; that was awesome!

Big money! en he got a job at $1.75 an hour and that was a killer wage.”

“at was after I graduated from 75 cents an hour at the pots and pans kitchen at Sackett Hall,” interjected Gene.

“In those days, a dime was a dime and a penny was a penny and our tuition was $75,” she said. And a dress code was a dress code. Sort of.

“When I was in school if you were a girl, if you ever got caught with pants on while on campus, you would be in the Dean of Women’s office. I’m not kidding you. e way we did it was, we rolled our pants up past our knees and wore long coats. at way they couldn’t tell. You wore your coat all day.”

Linda enjoyed a long career as a teacher but always found time to bake cakes. “I wanted to learn how to decorate because I wanted to make my momma a pretty cake,” she said.

“I took a class from a decorator in Corvallis and made my first cake (depicting a church building) when we lived in Ashland,” she said.

“I kept wanting to change out (of my major) and my professors would get me and put me in a corner and put a finger in my face and say: ‘You need to stay in this field.’ ‘No, I want out!,’ I’d say. ‘You need to stay in this field.’ And I came from a home where if an adult put a finger in your face, you did what they said.”

Not that she regrets her education, even after half a century as a cake baker.

“My master’s was in health education,” she said. “It was awesome. I wanted to get counseling too but I didn’t have time to pick that up, but I wish to God that I had, because that’s kind of who I am.”

Gene explains: “ey come in here to buy a wedding cake, and they get counseling about being married, a lot of them do.”

Linda meets with customers in a quiet side room, away from the café patrons. In that peaceful spot, with a sweeping view of the Cascade Mountains, she can add a little something to their order.

“ese kids, when they finally get their cake ordered, I say to them: ‘May I speak to you about being married and what being married really is?’” she said. “Most of them say yes. is year I got a letter from a young girl and she said, ‘Cancel my cake. Because we talked about what you talked to us about and realized what we’re doing, it’s not gonna make it.’

“I’ve had two or three of those. I always tell them you better look at it now. I can’t tell you the number of people that walk

out of here changed; I had one girl who just sat there and sobbed.”

“I tell them what love is,” Linda said. “Love is, ‘I choose you — with your goods and your bads — and I vow myself to you until I die.’”

Said Gene: “You thought this was a cake shop, didn’t you?”

e shop can get pretty busy, but even the cake lady has limits.

“We won’t do more than 1,000 people in one weekend worth of weddings,” she said. “We can do quite a few small cakes. We did 14 weddings in one weekend with small cakes; normally we do four to six.”

Gene tries to fix what breaks, and he’s mastered the art of delivering the sometimes complex creations without ruining them. “I tell her, ‘You can’t afford me and I don’t want to get fired, so I work for free.’”

When will the cake lady retire?“I tell my daughter every year I’m going

to quit and I watch them make cakes and ... I can’t quit,” Linda said. “I’ve been doing this for 49 years.

“I like to give people more than they expected. at’s how you need to do life — to make life a joy. I enjoy it a lot because, I can’t tell you how many people walk out of here different, because of our cake — and we affect their lives.

“ere’s so many broken people out there. We like to make people happy.” q
