potential verbsPotential verbs let you express the ability or inability to do something. These are the ones you’ll learn in Day 1.

話せる to be able to speak, can speak

ならえる to be able to learn, can learn

ねむれる to be able to sleep, can sleep

およげる to be able to swim, can swim

食べられる to be able to eat, can eat

行ける to be able to go, can go

Potential verbs are used to say what you can or can’t do. In English we add ‘can’ or ‘able to’ with a verb to express this. You have probably already learnt a similar way to do this in Japanese:

plain verb + ことができる = I can do the action in the verb. It is also possible to say what you can do by changing the verb. This is more common than using plain verb + ことができる.

Here are some examples:

どんなむずかしい　きょくでも　ひけます。However difficult the composition, I can play it.

大学には、たぶん、入れると思います。I think I probably will be able to enter university.

Forming potential verbs is done like this:

verbs ending in ‘iru’ or ‘eru’ replace the る with られる

In modern spoken Japanese the られる ending has become shortened to れる. So you will most likely hear people say 食べれる instead of 食べられる.

Notice that the potential form of 来るbecomes 来られる. In modern spoken Japanese, ここくこ

来られる is shortened further to 来れる. So 来る (to come) becomes 来られるor こ

来れる (can come).

which particle to use with a potential verb

The を used in a non-potential sentence mostly becomes が when the sentence uses a potential verb.

私は、フランス語を　話します。 I speak French.

私は、フランス語が　話せます。 I can speak French.

できる will also use が but does not always need a particle. For example both of the following sentences are correct:

私は、やきゅうが　できます。 I can play baseball.

私は、やきゅう　できます。 I can play baseball.



forming negative potential verbsThe negative forms of potential verbs are formed by adding ません or ない. For example, やめられません or やめられない.

expressing uncertaintyplain verb + かどうかToday you’ll be looking at how to express uncertainty or probability in three ways. The first way has a similar meaning to ‘whether or not’ in English. For example

やくに立つかどうかわからない。I don’t know whether it will be useful or not.

行けるかどうかまだわからないんだ。I still don’t know whether I will be able to go or not. As in these sentences, かどうか is often followed by わからない／わかりません.

Another common pattern using かどうか is shown by the following example. なかうえもと

中上さんは、たに本さんに青森けんに行くかどうか聞きました。Miss Nakaue asked Miss Tanimoto whether she will go to Aomori Prefecture or not. Here かどうかis followed by 聞く meaning to ask.

An answer to questions using かどうか + 聞く can be either an affirmative or a negative answer.

ゆきこは、まさおが東京に　行くかどうか聞きました。Yukiko asked Masao whether he will go to Tokyo or not.

まさおは、行くと答えました。Masao replied that he will go.or

まさおは、行かないと答えました。Masao replied that he won’t go.

expressing possibility and probabilityusing か within a sentence As you already know, か is used at the end of a sentence to make it into a question. You can also use か within a sentence to say such things as:

‘I know or (don’t know) where / how / who / what / which . . . ’ by using the appropriate question word with か within the larger sentence. This is the second way of expressing doubt you’re learning today. For example:

山高さんがどこにいるのかわかりません。I don’t know where Miss Yamataka is.

だれが車をつかったか知っていますか。Do you know who used the car?

かの先生は私にしけんがいつあるか教えてくださいました。Mr Kano told me when the exam will be.

You can also use か within a sentence to report questions using 聞きました (asked). You do this by using か between the question and 聞きました. For example:

ゆきこは、まさおがいつ青森に行くか聞きました。Yukiko asked when Masao will go to Aomori.

plain verb + はずですThe third way to express doubt or probability is by using plain verb + はずです. This is roughly equivalent to ‘I expect’ or ‘probably’ in English. When a speaker uses はずです at the end of his or her sentence, it indicates he or she is making a judgement about the possibility of a particular action or event taking place. It is similar to the pattern, plain verb + でしょう but is a stronger statement of possibility. Plain verb + でしょう is a guess.

寺田さんは、来るはずです。Mr Terada will probably come.I expect Mr Terada will come.

The speaker may have some prior knowledge; perhaps Mr Terada has already telephoned to say he will come, or in the past Mr Terada has always come.

寺田さんは、来るでしょう。Probably Mr Terada will come.I guess Mr Terada will come.

Here the speaker is indicating by でしょう that they are not really sure, they are taking a guess that Mr Terada will come. Look at this example. Here Naoko says.

うそ。信じられないわ。あなたは、知っているはずだよ。That’s a lie. I don’t believe you. I expect you do know.

Here Naoko is pretty certain what she is saying is the case and so she uses はず.

This morning we chose our clubs at university. Among the sports clubs, we can join tennis, swimming and athletics. At first I couldn’t decide whether to join tennis or swimming. I chose tennis. Do you know where the large park called Maruyama is? It’s near the baseball ground. The tennis courts are in the park. We will probably play tennis every morning from 2nd of August. I expected that Nakajima sensei will be the coach. I don’t know whether he is a good coach or not but I heard that he was a nice guy. By the way, do you know where your racquet is? Please tell me. Thanks for your letter, Naochan. I’m also well. Japanese winters are colder than New Zealand winters. However, in August we can go skiing in the mountains. Next month I am planning to go skiing in Tongariro National Park with my friend Steve. Steve talks of nothing else but skiing. It’s certain that a lot of snow will fall on the mountain in August. We haven’t decided whether or not to go by rental car or bus.

By the way, do you know where Tongariro National Park is? It’s in the middle of the North Island. It takes about five to six hours by car from Wellington.

I put my racquet on top of the bookcase in my room, so I expect it will be there. Send my love to Mum and Dad.Keep well.

Little by little I am saving money. In the weekends I can’t relax, but at weddings I can meet various people. Last weekend I met a nice girl, and so I was happy. She said that she also likes music and can play the violin. On Thursday night we intend to go to a Japanese restaurant. At the restaurant we can eat my favourite Japanese food. I’m looking forward to it.

Masafumi Yeah! When you go to the classroom, there are various textbooks written in manga. Yesterday, I asked the teacher what sort of textbooks written in manga are there. He said he heard that world history and Japanese history manga are especially popular. By the way, tomorrow I’ll probably go to the beach.

Steve I don’t know whether I can go or not. I have to study my Japanese.
