Context: God raised up Elijah as a Prophet at a very critical time in Israel’s history. Jezebel, an idolatrous Queen/priestess of Baal, had lead Ahab and the kingdom of Israel [God’s chosen people] into Baal worship. We last saw Elijah meet Obadiah to set up a meeting with King Ahab.

1 Kings 18:17 And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, [Art] thou he that troubleth Israel? 17¶ 아합이 엘리야를 볼 때에 그에게 이르되, 네가 이스라엘을 괴롭게 하는 자냐? 하매 6

18 And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father's house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the LORD, and thou hast followed Baalim.

Elijah made his prophetic statement to Ahab and then went to hide at the brook Cherith. Ravens delivered him 6

with bread and flesh twice a day. Elijah went to Zarephath and dwelt with a widow (he lived in a loft above the house); God miraculously provided meal and oil to sustain them during the famine. Then the widow’s son died. God answered Elijah’s prayers and raised the young man back to life. Were Elijah and John the Baptist alike in dress or temperament?

King Ahab was not timid. He was used to being the King. He probably sized up Elijah as of a lower status; perhaps because of how he dressed – we don’t know for sure.

Mount Carmel

441 meters = 1446 feet, [That was 1422 feet above the valley floor]. 441 미터 = 1446 피트. [골짜기 바닥으로부터 1422 피트]

- So climbing up Mount Carmel was a 1422 foot (433 meters) climb. 갈멜 산을 오르려면 433미터를 올라가야 합니다.

If there are only ‘two or three’ the most spiritually mature trains the lesser mature. We are all in training at 8

Would you call Elijah a dramatic preacher? 여러분은 엘리야를 드라마틱한 설교자라고 부르시겠습니까?

22 Then said Elijah unto the people, I, [even] I only, remain a prophet of the LORD; but Baal's prophets [are] four hundred and fifty men.

There is a time for such drama, when the situation dictates. This was a contest between good and evil. Now, 9

Too much drama is actually too much. Yet, if you examine Scripture, God uses visual examples to tell a story. The Lord Jesus used word pictures, and parables, and common objects to get His point across.



22 그때에 엘리야가 백성에게 이르되, {주}의 대언자로는 나 곧 나만 홀로 남았으나 바알의 대언자는 사백오십 명이로다. 10

23 Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay [it] on wood, and put no fire [under]: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay [it] on wood, and put no fire [under]: 23 그런즉 그들이 수소 두 마리를 우리에게 주게 하고 또 자기들을 위해 수소 하나를 택하여 그것을 여러 조각으로 자르고 나무 위에 놓되 그 밑에 불은 붙이지 말게 하라. 나는 다른 수소를 예비하여 나무 위에 놓고 그 밑에 불은 붙이지 아니하리라. 11

Here are the rules of the contest. 여기에 시합 규칙이 있습니다.

24 And call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.

Did Elijah delegate his prophetic job? NO. Did Elijah have someone else do his job? NO. 10

“It is Martin Luther, by the way, who is credited with the statement, “One with God is a majority,” and he knew the accuracy of that statement by experience. Elijah also learned this truth through experience in his day when there had been a wholesale departure of the northern kingdom from God. Under Ahab and Jezebel there was almost total apostasy—Elijah pretty much stood alone. It is true that there were seven thousand people who had not bowed to Baal, but they had retreated to the mountains. Not one of them stood with Elijah. He was not aware that they even existed until God told him.” J. Vernon McGee, Commentary, via e-Sword.

God will show Elijah later; that he has 700 knees that have not bowed to Baal.

Elijah sure seems alone. Now, right now this sure is what seems like to Elijah. We know from our study, that 11

Obadiah and 100 prophets remain [in caves]. And we have heard God tell Elijah that he has 7000 folks left.



24 또 너희는 너희 신들의 이름을 부르라. 나는 {주}의 이름을 부르리니 불로 응답하는 신 곧 그분이 [하나님]이시니라, 하매 온 백성이 응답하여 이르기를, 잘 말씀하셨나이다, 하니라. 12

Elijah is a convincing speaker. 엘리야는 설득을 잘 하는 사람이었습니13

다.

There will come a time in Revelation where the whole world will be watching two witnesses (Revelation11:3) – one of who I think is Elijah. 14

The 850 idolatrous priests start working on their sacrifice. 850명의 우상숭배 제사장들이 희생물을 놓고 행동하기 시작합니다

burnt sacrifice is not the same, but I am making the point that a bullock is heavy, and that this would take time.

Yell, he [Baal] can’t hear you yet. He can’t hear you! 예~, 그 (바알)은 네 말을 못 듣는구나. 그는 들을 수 없어!

28 And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them. 28 그들이 큰 소리로 부르고 자기들의 관례에 따라 몸에서 피가 철철 흐를 때까지 칼과 창으로 자기 몸을 찢었더라.

Evil idolaters are very sincere in their worship. 사악한 우상숭배자들은 아주 심각하게 숭배합니다.

One of the problems with idolatry is the people don’t realize how wrong they are. 우상숭배자들의 한 가지 문제는 자기들이 얼마나 잘못됐는지를 깨닫지 못한다는 점입니다.

That’s because they are lost. 그들은 잃어버린 상태에 있기 때문입니다.

They need a Savior. 그들은 구원자가 필요합니다.

They need The Lord Jesus Christ. 그들은 주 예수 그리스도가 필요합니다.

God wants us to ‘maximize’ what we have. He will sometimes not answer prayers for help; if we are not 21

Digging a trench around the altar. A trench is a short term holding area dug to hold water in. This is not a ‘ten 23

Daddy, Daddy; what is Elijah doing. He’s watering down the sacrifice honey. He’s trying to show us how

powerful that Almighty God is. Our God opened the Red Sea. He overturned Pharaoh and his chariots in the

Red Sea.

Grandpa, Grandpa, how can God light a fire with wet wood? Grandson; Our God can do anything. There is 24

nothing too hard for our God. God gave Sarah a baby son in her old age. There is nothing too hard for God. God

parted the Jordan River and the 12 tribes of Israel crossed over into Canaan land on dry land. There is nothing

impossible for our God?



[that] I [am] thy servant, and [that] 내가 주의 종인 것과

Elijah let God do the ‘convincing’. But when Elijah knew God was moving; He moved.29

The prophet Jonah ran away from God’s calling [That was definitely foolishness]. Even Godless foreign 32

sailors knew that he was in the wrong. Those sailors could not fix Jonah’s problem. Only he could. How did running away turn out for Jonah?

Elijah then killed 850 idolatrous prophets. 33

That does not mean that you need to do all the preaching. That is why I recommend that you preach once a 36

month at a minimum. You deprive your sheep of their spiritual nutrition; if you don’t feed them on a regular basis.

o They can help the Senior Pastor by their organization, administration and leadership. 37

The IIBC Constitution says that we are to have Quarterly Business Meetings (every 90 days). One way to get 37

As a local church is kept informed quarterly about its finances, the upcoming schedule, and issues – they 39

know what is going on and they ‘buy in’ on the vector that the Senior Pastor gives them. Conversely, if these quarterly business meetings are not done – folks may not know what is going on with respect to their finances. Or, worse, they may feel like they are not important enough to be kept abreast of what is going on. Keep your people informed with regular, open, and honest communication. The Application 40

Not every confrontation is wrong. In God ordained confrontations, we must trust God. God set this confrontation up by up passing God’s Word to King Ahab through the Prophet Elijah [No rain for 3 years.]. Elijah had to live through the God ordained famine (In hiding at the Brook Cherith and outside of Israel with the widow of Zarephath and her son). God told Elijah to set up this confrontation. He obeyed God. That’s why he could carefully and prayerfully ask:

1 Kings 18:36 And it came to pass at [the time of] the offering of the [evening] sacrifice, that Elijah the

prophet came near, and said, LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that

thou [art] God in Israel, and [that] I [am] thy servant, and [that] I have done all these things at thy

word.

36저녁 희생물을 드릴 때에 대언자 엘리야가 가까이 가서 이르되, {주} 곧 아브라함과 이삭과 이스라
