val die reën?
as wolke kom ween – jubel my hart oor jou!”
Jy
het gekom!”
Weet jy hoe werk in reënmeter? 1mm reën is 1 liter water op 1 vierkante meter.
As jy 25mm reën op jou 1 000 vierkante meter
erf kry is dit 25 ton water,
1 hektaar is dit 250 ton water.
As jy ‘n 1 000 hektaar plaas het en jy kry 80mm
reën is dit 800 ton x 1 000 hektaar. Dit 800 000
ton water.

20 finalists covered over 2000km, some over the harshest terrain that this arid and sparsely populated country can offer. Honda Quest did not aim to pick purely the most skilled riders, but instead set out to pick the most versatile team. They were looking for people who showed a keen sense of adventure and who were curious about their surroundings. They also wanted to know who would get along with their fellow competitors and could contribute to team spirit, as well as taking the initiative with special tasks. Pieter Lourens from Bloemfontein was chosen from 40 contestants at the Boot Camp who were selected from almost 900 entries. The aim was not only to determine who would be able to complete Honda Quest, but also who could be brand ambassadors for Quest and the versatile Honda CRF1000 L Africa Twin. We are so proud of Pieter’s team who came second in this quest. Well Done Pieter!

DuneSeven / Kgalagadi Aid Project
The DuneSeven/Kgalagadi Aid Project is an initiative undertaken by the owners of DuneSeven and
the company as a whole to give aid and support to the Kgalagadi Trans-frontier park and the
Kalahari surrounding areas.
The Kgalagadi (Derived from the Tswana word Kgala which means Place of thirst, Great Thirstland
or waterless place) and Kalahari district is classified as an arid area with minimal rainfall and
extreme heat conditions. Surviving in these areas is a daily matter of life and death for animals as well
as local tribes such as the SAN- Bushmen.
Resources are very scarce and there are minimum infrastructure within the area so the animals, local
people, rangers, workers and organisations that do the actual physical work of maintenance and up-
keep are heavily reliant from the little bit of tourism and support from outside the region in the form
of donations of funds, clothing, machinery and parts, vehicle parts, food, blankets and any other
forms and means to keep warm as temperatures run into the minus figures during winter with not
much to brace against the cold.
The list is endless. Look at their website at http://www.duneseven.co.za/index.php/ct-menu-item-9

All Terrain Gear’ History Don’t let your hobby become your work … ja, well! All we needed were a multi-fuel stove, two top bags and
saddle bags to go on our first ‘serious’ trip into Africa. A few years earlier we had unsuccessfully bags made
locally as the imported stuff were not designed for Africa use. Once we started shopping for our first long term
trip we realized that we were not alone as most of our friends faced the same problem. We also sweated in fear
of the prices and decided to tackle the established brands in offering an affordable, technical, local product.
You know the kind made for the serious South African bundu-basher.
And so, in 2009 All Terrain Gear and our travel blog www.PikiPiki.co.za were born. Initially we kept the two
apart but once a Yank told us how valuable our travels could be for our business we made sure we showcased
our products in actual use and yes, some abuse too.
PikiPiki is the Swahili word for small motorcycle. An African descriptive word, got to love it! We also used
Swahili words in the product range, ie Jiko stoves, Jiko meaning ‘cooking place’.
Every product was thought through the African way … taking into account the big fat white thorns that grace
most bundu bashing paths, Oom Daan’ rough hands and even Highveld thunderstorms. Once the products
were procured we tested our own products, and yes some from our Asian friends as not all production facilities
we needed were available in our beloved country,. We took it on rough rides, gave the SABS a run in the “boer
maak ‘n plan” quality test by doing strength tests with cement bags and ropes. We wanted to stand by our
products, confidently! And we did.
All Terrain Gear was born out of passion for motorcycling and the outdoor lifestyle. We took our products
through Africa, over to Israel, into Europe and eventually the Americas.
Sadly, we sold All Terrain Gear only because it interfered with our continues ‘testing’ of the products.

Geestelike Pitkos
Vandag ’n paar jaar later, skud ek my beursie uit.
Here, dankie, dat daar altyd hoop is.
