Omwisselen oude en nieuwe PIAS hoofdmenu's De vernieuwing van PIAS heeft ook het herschikken van modules met zich meegebracht, wat geleid heeft tot een nieuw PIAS hoofdmenu:

Exchanging old and new PIAS main menus The renewal of PIAS has also resulted in the rearrangement of modules, which resulted in a new PIAS main menu:

Dit menu is al eerder verspreid, maar heette voorlopig newPIASmenu. Gebruikers die op de desktop een shortcut hadden naar `PIASmenu' kregen dus nog gewoon het oude. Nu is dat omgedraaid, zodat een shortcut naar `PIASmenu' nu het nieuwe menu opstart. Het oude menu is ook nog beschikbaar onder de naam classicPIASmenu, maar als men daar snel toegang toe wilt hebben dan zal men zelf een extra shortcut daarvoor moeten aanmaken.

This menu has been distributed earlier, but was temporarily named newPIASmenu. Users who had a shortcut on their desktops to `PIASmenu' still got the old version. Now this has been reversed, so that a shortcut to `PIASmenu' will now start the new menu. The old menu is also still available under the name classicPIASmenu, but when one wants to access that swiftly, one has to create an additional shortcut for that.

Vrijgeven van Newlay Newlay is de nieuwe module voor de definitie van compartimenten, schotten en dekken, en vervangt als zodanig de bestaande Compart-module van PIAS (ook wel bekend onder hoofdstuk 210 in het oude hoofdmenu). U hoeft overigens niet direct om te schakelen; zowel Compart als Newlay blijven een tijdje naast elkaar bestaan, maar op termijn zal Compart geheel verdwijnen. Release of Newlay Newlay is the new module for the definition of compartments, bulkheads and decks, and as such replaces the existing Compart module of PIAS (also known as Chapter 210 in the old main menu). It is not neccessary to switch immediately, by the way; both Compart and Newlay will exist next to each other for a while, but in the long run Compart will be outphased. Digitaliseren van een bitmap in Hulldef Het digitaliseren van een bestaand spantenraam is in PIAS mogelijk met behulp van een digitizer, of d.m.v. het aanwijzen spantpunten van een bitmap afbeelding die op het scherm getoond wordt. Beide functies zitten al heel lang in PIAS, maar die bitmap wordt tegenwoordig verreweg het meest gebruikt. Daarom is die functie wat gemoderniseerd, o.a. doordat de gedigitaliseerde spanten nu over de bitmapafbeelding heen getekend worden, wat een betere visuele controle mogelijk maakt.

Digitizing a bitmap in Hulldef Digitizing an existing body plan in PIAS is possible by means of a digitizer, or by indicating frame points of a bitmap picture shown on the screen. Both functions have been included in PIAS for a long time, but that bitmap is used by far the most nowadays. Thats why that function has been modernized, among others because the digitized frames are now drawn over the bitmap picture, which enables better visual control.

2/3 Nieuwe functies in Fairway De renderfunctie in Fairway, waarmee het kromme oppervlak in de GUI zichtbaar gemaakt kan worden, is nu vrijgegeven voor algemeen gebruik. Daarnaast wordt er op dit moment gewerkt aan meer bijzondere shading functies, waarvan onderstaand een eerste voorbeeld is weergegeven.

New functions in Fairway The render function in Fairway, with which the curved surface in the GUI can be visualized, is now released for general usage. Apart from that, we are working right now on more special shading functions, a first example of which is displayed below.

Fairway shading Ook de export van een Fairway scheepsmodel naar IGES is aangepakt; in de eerste plaats kan deze export nu met een veel grotere nauwkeurigheid plaatsvinden, en in de tweede plaats is Fairway voorzien van een IGES-preview functie waarmee men in Fairway al kan zien wat de kwaliteit van een IGES file zal zijn. Hieronder treft u een voorbeeld van deze previewer aan.

Also the export of a Fairway ships model to IGES has been dealt with. Firstly, this export can now take place much more accurately, and, secondly, Fairway has been provided with an IGES-preview function with which one is already able to see in Fairway what will be the quality of an IGES file. An example of this previewer can be found below.

Maximale kettingkrachten van anchor-handling vaartuigen PIAS kende al een module voor het berekenen van deze krachten, volgens de voorschriften van het Norwegian Maritime Directorate uit 2007. Recent zijn de corresponderende stabiliteitsvoorschriften ook opgenomen in de update van de Bureau Veritas rules, maar de regels voor de te produceren tabellen en grafieken zijn daarbij anders. Maximum chain forces of anchor-handling vessels PIAS already had a module for calculating these forces, in accordance with the 2007 requirements of the Norwegian Maritime Directorate. Recently, the corresponding stability requirements have also been included in the update of the Bureau Veritas rules, but the rules for the tables and graphics to be produced are different there. Copy, paste, undo en redo De softwarebibliotheken die de invulvensters besturen zijn nu voorzien van voorzieningen voor undo en redo, en voor functies van kopieren en plakken van celinhouden naar en van Windows' klembord (bv. om de celwaardes met een spreadsheet te kunnen uitwisselen), zie www.sarc.nl/manuals/pias/htmlNL/general.html#general_copy_paste voor meer details. Sinds januari 2014 worden deze functies, waar relevant, geleidelijk in de verschillende PIAS modules opgenomen.

Copy, paste, undo and redo The software libraries which manage the input windows have been extended with facilities for undo and redo, and for functions to copy and paste cell contents to or from Windows' clipboard (for example to be able to exchange cell values with a spreadsheet), see www.sarc.nl/manuals/pias/htmlEN/general.html#general_copy_paste for more details. Since January 2014 these functions will - where relevant - gradually be included in the different PIAS modules.

Handleiding Al in een eerdere nieuwsbrief hebben we meegedeeld bezig te zijn met een nieuwe handleiding, die zowel in PDF, HTML als in een help-reader beschikbaar is. Dit proces ligt aardig op schema, het blijft natuurlijk monnikenwerk maar flink wat hoofdstukken zijn afgerond. Op www.sarc.nl/publications/manuals treft u links aan, maar de handleiding wordt ook met uw PIAS-distributie verscheept. Er is trouwens ook een nieuwe vorm van de handleiding van Locopias waarin instructiefilmpjes verwerkt zijn, zie www.sarc.nl/manuals/locopias/htmlEN/index.html.

Manual In a previous newsletter it was announced that we are busy with a new manual, which will be available in PDF, HTML as well as in a help-reader. This process is well on schedule, although it is sheer drudgery, but many chapters have been completed. On www.sarc.nl/publications/manuals you can find links, but the manual is also shipped with your PIAS distribution. By the way, there is also a new shape of the manual of Locopias in which instruction films have been included, see www.sarc.nl/manuals/locopias/htmlEN/index.html

Vista compatibility pack Ten opzichte van eerdere Windows versies bevatte Windows-Vista een aantal incompatibiliteiten. Om daar mee om te gaan is, alweer flink wat jaren geleden, PIAS voorzien van een facultatief Vista compatibility pack. Deze bijzondere functies worden op steeds meer plaatsen in PIAS gebruikt, ook onder Windows 7 en 8, omdat de werking daarvan overeen blijkt te komen met die van Vista, op dit vlak. Veel PIAS-gebruikers hebben in de loop der jaren dit packal aangeschaft, en hoewel het voor het fatsoenlijk gebruik van PIAS niet per se nodig is om over hierover te beschikken wordt het overigens ook aangeraden, omdat men anders regelmatig tegen de melding aanloopt dat het niet beschikbaar is. De optie staat onder nummer 100.50 op de prijslijst en kost 622 euro (incl. afgekocht onderhoud en ondersteuning).

Vista compatibility pack Compared to previous Windows versions Windows-Vista contained a number of incompatibilities. In order to cope with this, PIAS has been provided quite some years ago with an optional Vista compatibility pack. These special functions are used more and more in PIAS, also under Windows 7 and 8, because its performance evidently matches that of Vista, in this sphere. Many PIAS users have already purchased this pack over the years, and although it is not by all means necessary for the proper use of PIAS to dispose of this, it is advised anyway, because otherwise one is regularly notified that it is not available. The option can be found under number 100.50 on the price list and costs 622 euro (incl. purchased maintenance and support).
