The ability to detect the direction of a
moving object or the hand and translate it into a user interface
action
Gesture
Enabled on:
© ams AG 2015 Page 12
A new user interface • Adds an additional level of control over the touch screen • Opens up new avenues for gaming on smartphone A new sense for control • Enables control when hands are dirty
(e.g. during cooking or if gloves are used) • Enables control when touching the phone is not allowed (Automotive) Control the phone while driving (AUTOMOTIVE MODE) • Phone does not need to be touched >>> LEGAL • No issue with bouncing phone and touch screen • Flexible mounting for left or right hand control
Why gesture detection: benefits/use cases
© ams AG 2015 Page 13
Large Automotive OEMs are enabling their cars with gesture The benefit for gesture in phones: • Creates user demand for the feature The opportunity for Gesture in Phone: • Built-in systems are difficult to upgrade, likely limited to the feature
set at the time of build and quickly outdated; phones are replaced and upgraded more frequently
• Built-in systems with gesture are expensive and will be limited to high-end cars; with a phone the feature can be used in any car
Why gesture for automotive

A gesture-enabled phone will be the car’s infotainment system • While the car is in motion (detection with accelerometer) the phone
goes into an automotive mode
• In Automotive mode the gesture sensor is continuously enabled, allowing:
• Accept and Dismiss phone calls • Volume Control • Scroll through contacts and select to call • etc…. (the limit is software only!)

Sensor Trends to enhance aesthetics

Reduce or eliminate size and visibility of apertures OEMs want to eliminate “large” visible holes in the front glass to enhance aesthetics
This is where they currently are…

ams Biosensor Solutions: • Heart Rate • Hear Rate Variability • Reflective SPO2 (Beta) • Blood Pressure (Alpha) ams Total Biosensor Solution: • HW Module + opto-mechanical know-how + optional SW ams focuses on the Biosensor Consumer Experience: • Exceptional performance and ultra low power consumption
=>> long battery life • Lock on time is <=5s
Sensors for Wearables
© ams AG 2015 Page 22
ALS for the wearables market needs to have: • An extremely thin form factor allowing for mounting directly onto
the actual flex of the touch panel display
• Accuracy and Sensitivity: • An integrated on-chip interference filter rejects IR producing a
near-photopic response behind inked glass • TSV packaging enhances sensitivity by 10%-20%
TSL2584TSV ALS is ideally suited for wearables.

Sensors for the Internet Of Everything

Water Consumption • Ultrasound Digital Water Meter Solution for IOE monitoring:
• Clamp on IOE Meter: connect to any line without plumber • Ultra Low power enables >10 year operation on single
AA battery
• Applications: • Individual water consumption monitoring (irrigation) • Leak Detection

Sensor Driven LED Lightbulbs (ams unique XYZ Color Space Sensors) • LED response change over time/temp -> Inconsistent Experience:
• Today a precise (expensive) LED binning, tight (expensive) component specs and per-unit calibration is necessary to get to a decent initial color and brightness match.
• Sensor Driven solutions solve the challenge: • Closed loop, sensor-driven PWM tuning hits the real color target,
and holds it independent from LED variations . • Lower overall cost: no binning, no calibration,
improved consumer experience.
Sensors for the Internet Of Everything
Sensor Driven LED Smart Lightbulbs incl. Qualcomm’s advanced Wireless Connectivity (WiFi, BT) will enhance the premium AllSeen experience consumers are looking for.
