Dear reader, Welcome to the first edition of Infosylva in 2016! We open this new edition with a two-year FAO project in Turkey’s Anatolian steppe, co-financed by the European Union and Turkey. The project aims to help communities living in this fragile semi-arid region to better cope with the unfavourable effects of climate change and to restore their land by using what is known as the ecosystem-based adaptation approach. (In English) In 2015, the Forest Livelihood Training Initiative, organized by FAO, offered 18 prison inmates in Kingstown, San Vincent and the Grenadines, an opportunity for social and economic re-integration. As part of a wider project aimed also at fostering forest livelihoods and forest rehabilitation, the training workshop taught the inmates how to make vetiver mats and baskets, providing them with better opportunities for employment and social reinsertion once out of prison. (In English) In Latin America, where land use is reportedly responsible for up to half of all greenhouse gas emissions, the strengthening of the REDD+ mechanism at UNFCCC COP21 in Paris last December places forests, sustainable forest management and payments for ecosystem services at the forefront of the battle against climate change. (In Spanish) A new FAO land cover atlas of the Islamic Republic of

Afghanistan will help institutions at different levels as well as the private sector to better tackle food security and food production issues in the country, by offering a comprehensive statistical view of land use for all its regions. (In English) In 2016 France is aiming to revitalize the forest sector through major investments in this sector, which seems to have great potential for both economic growth and social development. Covering some 17 million hectares, French forests make France the fourth most forested country in Europe. (In French) This news and much more in this new edition of Infosylva. Abrimos esta nueva edición con un proyecto de la FAO de dos años en la estepa de Anatolia en Turquía, cofinanciado por la Unión Europea y Turquía. El proyecto tiene como objetivo ayudar a las comunidades que viven en esta frágil región semiárida a afrontar mejor los efectos desfavorables del cambio climático y a restaurar su tierra mediante el uso de lo que se conoce como el enfoque de la adaptación basada en ecosistemas. (En inglés) En 2015, la Iniciativa para la Formación en Medios de Vida Forestales, organizada por la FAO, ofreció a 18 reclusos en Kingstown, San Vicente y las Granadinas, una oportunidad para la reintegración social y económica. Como parte de un proyecto más amplio destinado también a fomentar los medios de vida forestales y la rehabilitación de los bosques, el taller de capacitación enseñó a los internos como hacer alfombras y cestas de vetiver, brindándoles mejores oportunidades de empleo y de reinserción social una vez fuera de la cárcel. (En inglés) En América Latina, donde el uso del suelo es presuntamente responsable de hasta la mitad de todas las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero, el fortalecimiento del mecanismo REDD + en la CMNUCC COP21 en París el pasado diciembre, coloca las forestas, el manejo sostenible de los bosques y los pagos por servicios ambientales a la vanguardia de la lucha contra el cambio climático. (En español) Un nuevo atlas de la FAO, de uso y cobertura del suelo de la República Islámica de Afganistán, ayudará a las instituciones a diferentes niveles, así como al sector privado a abordar mejor las cuestiones de seguridad alimentaria y de la producción de alimentos en el país, ofreciendo una visión estadística completa de la utilización de la tierra para todas

sus regiones. Nous ouvrons cette nouvelle édition avec un projet de la FAO de deux ans dans la steppe anatolienne de la Turquie, cofinancé par l'Union européenne et la Turquie. (En anglais) En Amérique latine, où l'utilisation des terres est censément responsable de près de la moitié de toutes les émissions de gaz à effet de serre, le renforcement du mécanisme REDD + à la CCNUCC COP21 à Paris en décembre dernier place les forêts, leur gestion durable et les paiements pour les services écosystémiques en première ligne dans la bataille contre le changement climatique. (En espagnol) Un nouvel atlas de la FAO de la couverture du sol de la République islamique d'Afghanistan aidera les institutions à différents niveaux ainsi que le secteur privé à mieux aborder les questions de sécurité alimentaire et de la production de nourriture dans le pays, en offrant une vue statistique exhaustive de l'utilisation des terres pour l'ensemble de ses régions. FAO-Belgium collaboration continues to help Vanuatu recover from Tropical Cyclone Pam FAO News Asia and the Pacific 31/12/15 With early funding in response to the disaster, FAO was able to initiate recovery activities for restoring agricultural production by distributing vegetable seeds and increasing knowledge of food production and preservation. Quality certified seeds were provided to families and school communities to help re-establish vegetable gardens destroyed by the cyclone. New FAO publication: Endemic and rare plants of Kyrgyzstan FAO News Europe and Central Asia 21/12/15 The most vulnerable group of plants in Kyrgyzstan – a significant “hot spot” of biodiversity in Central Asia – are the subject of a new book just published by FAO. The Global Strategy for Plant Conservation aims to conserve endangered species, especially in the context of climate change. Prison inmates in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines enthused over FAO vocational training in basketry production FAO News Latin America and the Caribbean 30/12/15 Eighteen prison inmates in the Caribbean island of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines received training in basket and mat production in 2015. The Forest Livelihood Training Initiative, organized by the FAO, demonstrates considerable potential for the social and economic rehabilitation and reintegration of Vincentian inmates.

$3 million project targets Turkey’s vulnerable steppe lands Farms and communities in Turkey’s Anatolian steppe will soon have help in coping with the damaging impacts of climate change. A two-year, $3 million FAO project – co-financed by the European Union and Turkey – aims to restore healthy ecosystems, promote environmentally friendly agricultural practices, and raise levels of knowledge among government institutions.

New FAO publications Learning tool on Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) in the agriculture, forestry and other land use (AFOLU) sector The learning tool for Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMA) in agriculture and land use consists of a set of slides including different modules for independent studying. The tool reviews pathways for NAMA identification (i.e. fast track and in-depth analyses) and prioritization of different greenhouse gas emission (GHG) reduction options. It also displays required interventions to overcome barriers and presents available sources of data and funds. The learning tool showcases existing databases and tools for GHG estimation, and provides options for identification, prioritization and monitoring of mitigation actions in the agriculture and land use sectors. The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Land Cover Atlas This Atlas provides policy and strategic guidance to the rural sector on food security, which directly contributes to the overall objective of strengthening agricultural information and statistics services in the country. It includes an introduction text and the complete land cover mapping of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, organized in 34 Provinces and 5 Basins. Data tables and maps are available for each one of these administrative units. Nuevas publicaciones de la FAO Herramienta de aprendizaje sobre Medidas de Mitigación Apropiadas para Cada País (NAMA) en el sector de la Agricultura, Silvicultura y Otros Usos de la Tierra (AFOLU) Las acciones para reducir las emisiones y eliminar GEI en el sector de la agricultura, la silvicultura y otros

usos de la tierra (AFOLU) ofrecen valiosas oportunidades sobre las que fundamentar y aumentar las sinergias con actividades relacionadas con la intensificación sostenible, la mejora de la eficiencia, la adaptación al cambio climático, la seguridad alimentaria y el desarrollo rural (Módulo 1). Las medidas de mitigación apropiadas para cada país (NAMA, siglas en inglés) constituyen un vehículo en boga para los países que quieren desarrollar de forma voluntaria acciones para reducir las emisiones de GEI en el contexto del desarrollo sostenible nacional (Módulo 2). Taller latinoamericano de criterios e indicadores para el Manejo Forestal Sostenible: Informe Final Este taller es una parte clave del proyecto "Fortalecimiento de los Criterios e Indicadores para el Manejo Forestal Sostenible y su uso en políticas y prácticas'', coordinado por la FAO y financiado por el Ministerio Federal de Alimentación y Agricultura de Alemania. El proyecto incluye consultas nacionales, regionales y globales, con organismos gubernamentales y no gubernamentales y otras contrapartes. En estas consultas se revisará el uso de Criterios e Indicadores (C&I) y se examinarán las necesidades de las partes interesadas a nivel local, nacional, regional y mundial, así como las oportunidades para fortalecer su uso, aprender de los buenos ejemplos y promover las lecciones aprendidas. Nouvelles publications de la FAO Outil d’apprentissage sur les Mesures d’atténuation adaptées au pays (NAMA) dans les secteurs de l’agriculture, des forêts et des autres utilisations des terres (AFOLU) La version française de l'Outil d'apprentissage sur les mesures d’atténuation appropriées au niveau national (MAAN) dans le secteur agriculture, foresterie et autres affectations des terres (AFAT) se compose d'une série de diapositives en cinq modules pour l'étude indépendante. L'outil examine les voies pour l'identification des MAAN (c’est-à-dire évaluations rapides ou approfondies) et la hiérarchisation des options différentes pour la réduction des émissions de gaz à effet de serre (GES). Il décrit également les fonds disponibles et les interventions nécessaires pour surmonter les obstacles. Miscellaneous Asia-Pacific Forestry Week Registration and exhibition booth application now open! APFW 2016 will be the third Asia-Pacific Forestry Week following events held in Hanoi, Viet Nam in April 2008 and Beijing, China in November 2011. Each of these events attracted in excess of 700 participants and encompassed around 40 individual workshops, seminars and other events. APFW 2016 is expected to be an event of similar magnitude. In the context of the release of FAO’s Global Forest Resources Assessments 2015 (FRA), FAO is launching the "25 Years of forest change: Global Forest Resources Assessment 2015 app competition". Botswana Botswana Joins the Giants Club to fight the illegal ivory trade The Independent 04/01/16 Botswana is home to a population of around 200,000 savannah elephants, a third of all that remain in Africa. Through its newly established endangered species trust, Botswana, has signed a declaration to join The Giants Club, an initiative to combat the illegal ivory trade. It joins Kenya, Gabon and Uganda in their commitment to saving Africa’s elephant populations from extinction in the wild. Government prepares a comprehensive National Forest Policy Pakistan Herald 06/01/16 Federal Minister for Climate Change Zahid Hamid on Wednesday said that all provinces are working on finalising policies and measures for forestation at a national level, reported Radio Pakistan. Brazil Forest loss increased annually for 25 years at oldest Amazon mega-dam Mongabay.com 14/01/16 A new study finds that from 1988-2008, an 80,000 square kilometre study area around Brazil’s Tucuruí dam lost an average of 591-660 square kilometres of forest annually, a figure that dropped from 2008-2013 to 325 square kilometres per year.

Ghana EPA/NORSAAC Introduce Local Cooking Stove - to Reduce Use of Firewood All Africa 14/01/16 The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is introducing on a pilot basis a new locally made energy efficient cooking stove for use by rural dwellers across Ghana, as a means to prevent or reduce the use of firewood for cooking. Netherlands A floating forest will add instant greenery to Rotterdam's harbour Gizmodo 11/01/16 Like oversized fishing floats used as flower vases, these 20 trees planted in colourful buoys are designed to add whimsy and nature to Rotterdam’s industrial waterfront. Although a floating forest makes plenty of sense in a country like The Netherlands where water is often more readily available than land, this also provides some inspiration for coastal cities that are struggling to add greenspace but can’t plan more than a few decades down the line due to the possible detrimental effects of climate change. Sierra Leone Green Scenery reflects on VGGT Awoko 14/01/16 Green Scenery, an environmental advocacy group has reflected on the progress made on the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure (VGGT). United Kingdom Grey squirrel non-shooting policy criticised by group BBC 09/01/16 The European Squirrel Initiative (ESI) said the grey squirrel is an invasive, non-native species which is dominating the UK woodland. The ESI was set up to restore the native red squirrel as the dominant species throughout the continent. Rare UK butterfly under threat as elms disappear The Guardian 11/01/16 A species of rare UK butterfly is under threat after a widespread tree disease caused its only habitat to virtually disappear. According to research, the population of white-letter hairstreak butterflies has dropped by 96% in the last 40 years. Experts say over the same period, the UK population of elm trees, the butterflies’ exclusive habitat, has dropped by more than 30 million. Scotland’s forests to generate £13m a year from renewables The Scotsman 15/01/16 “The Forestry Commission appears to be striking a good balance between making space for renewables and replacing any tree cover lost. We know that increasing forested land is crucial to drawing down carbon from the atmosphere.” The Director of Friends of the Earth said.

United States of America Kentucky’s top forest steward for 2015 has planted nearly 100,000 trees Lexington Herald Leader 10/01/16 An 81 years old retired teacher was named the Outstanding Forest Steward of the Year for 2015 by the Kentucky Division of Forestry, and is being considered for an award by the American Tree Farm System. The reason is his work over more than 40 years to improve the quality of timber and wildlife habitat on his land in Casey and Taylor counties. Zimbabwe Can bamboo offer an alternative to trees? All Africa 12/01/16 With calorific values similar to wood and almost half that of petroleum by weight, bamboo charcoal produces fewer pollutants than both wood and petroleum products. It has the potential to help millions, who rely on bio-mass as their energy source and millions others who live without electricity. World Floods Pose Challenge for South American Integration IPS 04/01/16 The flooding that has affected four South American countries has underscored the need for an integrated approach to addressing the causes and effects of climate change. Mongabay.com 14/01/16 The Forest Stewardship Council is the world's pre-eminent forest-products certification body, but companies selling FSC-certified products keep getting caught violating its standards. Trees employ similar strategies to outcompete their neighbours Phys org 07/01/16 Published in Nature, the study demonstrated how 'personal' traits such as wood density and leaf morphology influence a tree species' ability to compete. There are trade-offs. Species with lighter wood usually grow more quickly than species with denser wood. But species with lighter wood also tend to die sooner and be poor competitors.
