Local solicitor and Fianna Fail candidate for Swords in the upcoming local elections, John Hennessy, has confirmed that the court services in both Swords and Balbriggan, are set to be wound up. Speaking to the County Leader, Hennessy said, “It has been made known to me that the Court Service has recommended the closure of Swords and Balbriggan courts, along with the one in Dun Laoghaire.” “This would be an absolute tragedy for the North County, should the District Courthouses at Swords and Balbriggan be closed. This is another example of a sharp knife being brought to bear on services in the North County, by this Fine Gael/ Labour government. Everything is now being centralised. It now means that the people of Swords and Balbriggan will now have to trek all the way to the Courts of Criminal Justice in Parkgate Street, to have small claims and family law cases heard. This is another example of services being taken away from our area. The presence of courts in Swords and Balbriggan generates economic activity in the area, where shops and other services benefit from the influx of people to the towns. “This is just another example of diminishing services in the North County area, following on from the closure of Garda stations. We need to stop this happening, before we turn our main streets into deserts. These towns are mushrooming in size, and there is no sense whatsoever in this move,” he said. He firmly believes that any savings to be made will be negligible. “I know for a fact that there is no mort- gage due on Swords courthouse, and the paltry savings will be made up primarily of wages saved from the closure,” concluded an angry Hennessy. The County Leader contacted the Court Services in an attempt to throw some light on their plans. A spokesperson was less definite about the situation than Hennessy, when saying, “The Courts Service, during 2013, undertook a review of court services in the greater Dublin Area which included Swords and Balbriggan District Courts. The purpose of the review was to examine options to ensure that the Courts Service can continue to maintain an appro- priate level of front line services to court users throughout Dublin city and county.” The statement continued, “The review is still under consideration by the Courts Service and no defini- tive proposals have been formulated in relation to any court venue being reviewed, including Swords and Balbriggan District Courts. No decision has been made to close any of these venues.” “Any proposal to change the status of Swords and Balbriggan District Courts would be subject to a comprehensive and detailed assessment. The criteria which would be taken into consideration would include an assessment of travelling distances, which court users might have to make to an alternative Court venue. This review would inform any future process for making proposals, and would then would become a matter for the Board of the Courts Service,” the statement concluded. Fears F or Future Of Local Courts John Hennessy The performance of local TD, Clare Daly (ULA) in the lead up to the recent resignation of Garda Commissioner, Martin Callinan, and the ongoing Garda whistleblower controversy, is one that many regard as crucial in the political fall-out that followed the affair. Swords based Daly has proved to be a powerful advocate in seeking justice in this controversy, to make sure that former Commissioner Callinan was held to account for his role in the affair, in which he used the word ‘disgusting’, when referring to the role of the whistleblowers. She also played a prominent role in keeping the pressure on Minister for Justice, Alan Shatter, which ultimately culminated in an apology by him to the two Garda whistleblowers at the centre of the political storm. Perhaps her finest hour came on Tuesday last, 25th March, when she appeared on RTE’s Morning Ireland programme. It was the day that Commissioner Callinan resigned, and many will wonder if Daly’s powerful contribution on that show contributed to the Commissioner’s demise. When asked on the show, if a simple, sincere apology from the Commissioner in respect of his remarks, would be acceptable, she said it was “gone beyond the point where an apology would be genuine. She also called for reform of the Gardai, but this could not be achieved, without reform at the top. She said, “We need real demo- cratic accountability of An Garda Siochana. It’s a little like having pyrite in our home. You can cover all the cracks and they will disappear for a while, but they’ll return, unless you eliminate the contaminated infill, and that’s what we have to do. It’s now time for Commissioner Callinan and Minister Shatter to go and let us have a discus- sion about the need for real accountability and oversight within the force,” she said. Many locals have told this newspaper of how proud they are, that one of their own TDs played a prominent role in such a major national event. Action Of SwordsLandlord CriticisedA local business has been subjected to what is beingdescribed as ‘a high handed act’ by it’s landlord. Wellknown Swords business, Shoe Mews, which islocated on Forster’s Way and owned by PatrickHanley, had it’s locks changed in a dawn swoop bythe landlord.Hanley told the County Leader: “I got a call at 6.49amon the morning of Saturday, 15th March last - the StPatrick’s weekend, telling me the locks had beenchanged on the shop. The management companywere not at all helpful and I didn’t know what to do. It

was then that I decided to call localTD, Clare Daly (ULA) to see if shecould have influence in the matter. She arrived around 8am and shewas treated the same way as I was.It was then that we decided that weneeded a solicitor to try to sortthings out. We called local solic-itor, John Hennessy, who cameover to the shop. The managementteam were not co-operative withhim either. Both Clare and John

were excellent and I would not have been able tocope without their help,” said Mr Hanley.Hennessy, who is also candidate for Fianna Fail in theupcoming local elections, told the County Leader that

he then issued urgent Court proceedings, and on footof those proceedings, the situation was reversed anda settlement was reached. The upshot is that ShoeMews can continue to trade at it’s present locationfor a period of two months, before locating perma-nently to it’s other shop at Dotie Bobbins, also onForster’s Way. Daly deplored the actions of the land-lord and condemned the “unacceptable treatment ofMr Hanley, who is trying valiantly to trade his way outof difficult economic conditions.” Hanley said, “It wasvery underhanded to get a call so early in the morning and I feel that this has done greatdamage to my business and the fear is that thisaction will undermine our reputation with ourcustomers,” he said.

Election Heats UpThe two main politicalgroupings, whosecandidates are eyeingup the role of President of the EUCommission, engaged in an electionbattle across Europe. Both havegiven their views on what makesthem the best candidate for the job.The Lisbon Treaty suggeststhat the candidate from theparty grouping which hasthe greatest successshould be nominated bythe Council of Ministersfor the post. The pollssuggest that the result couldbe very close. The Parliamentmust endorse the appointment, so amajority of MEPs must back theproposal. Will the ALDE Group, ofwhich Fianna Fáil are members, bethe President maker? Perhaps theirmain candidate will then take thePresidency of the Parliament, asMartin Schulz moves to thePresidency of the Commission. What then for Ollie Rehn, the EUCommissioner who stepped asidefrom the contest to be the leadALDE candidate, on the under-

standing that he wouldbe proposed for a topjob in the new adminis-

tration. Does he get a revampedEconomic and Foreign Relationsportfolio all very neat and democ-ratic?In the event that the EPP are the

largest grouping post the elec-tion, Jean-Claude has said

he will be “very angry” ifhe is not nominated forthe Presidency.Interestingly, in the past

week he has outlined hiscurrent approach to the ques-

tion of dealing with those whosay Europe is too involved inmatters better dealt with at locallevel. Junker now recognises thatdealing with too many small thingsat the centre causes a reluctance ofacceptance at citizen level. That’sthe kind of talk Dave in the UKneeds to hear. So maybe thechange of tone might be in prepara-tion for a role as the fixer of Europe. It all comes down to how the votesare cast across Europe. Make sureto have your say next May.

McGuire Calls For PublicSeating In DonabateLocal councillor, Gerry McGuire (Lab) is calling for seating tobe put in place in Donabate, which can be used by local resi-dents and visitors alike, while enjoying the village centre. McGuire outlined to the County Leader that there are anumber of key locations, where seating could be put inplace. “The Hand area is one that would be an appropriatelocation, where people can view the main shopping area, and enjoy the comings and goings in the village. Other areasthat should be considered, include the area outside theChurch and at the bus stop. People could use this area tomeet friends after going to Church or after visiting the localshops. Seating would also encourage people to spend moretime in the village, thus making their visit more enjoyable,”he said.McGuire spoke about other towns and villages in the region, where proper seating has made a significant difference toresidents and visitors alike. “Donabate has a railway station, which attracts visitors to the village, and I feel that the provi-sion of seating at key areas, would go a long way to creatinga favourable impression on them, as well as on our own resi-dents. I am now calling on the Council to put measures inplace to facilitate this,” he said.

Council Needs ToEngage WithRidgewoodResidentsIndependent local election candidatefor Swords Ward, Justin Sinnott, iscalling on the County Council to providefor the safety of residents inRidgewood estate in Swords, byputting in ramps to counter carsspeeding along the main road in theestate.Speaking to the County Leader ,Sinnott, who has vowed to address theproblems associated with new estates,if elected, said: “One of the bigconcerns in newer estates is road safety and theproblems associated with speeding cars.

Ridgewood is a busy estate, with shops, including a Tesco Express, which attracts a lot oftraffic into the area. Previously there had been aspeed ramp in the area, which was removed bythe developer. What I would like to seehappening is the County Council asking theopinion of residents, on whether they would liketo see a speed ramp reinstated in the area. There is an ongoing fear among residents that,as things are at the moment, a fatality is a real

possibility,” Sinnott continued, “I have beencontacted by parents of young families, who use the green area in the estateand are fearful that cars won’t slowdown, unless a speed ramp is put inplace. I know that speed ramps can becontroversial, but what I’m hearing onthe doorsteps here, is that peoplewould like a single, car friendly speedramp just to slow cars down. This wouldmake a huge difference, but I believe

that there should be meaningful dialogue withbetween residents and the Council, which Ibelieve is what the majority of residents want,”he concluded.

Collins Wants FootpathImprovementsIndependent candidate forSwords in the upcomingelections, Michael Collins, has asked the CountyCouncil to allocatefunding for the provisionof a new pathway alongthe length of the PortraneRoad in Donabate. He gotin touch with the CountyLeader and explained thatthere were numerousproblems with the currentpath, due to its poorcondition, and said it mustbe replaced. “At present, very manypeople, both young andold use the existing foot-path for jogging and soon,” he said. “This foot-path is totally unsuitableas it is in poor condition, istoo narrow and, as it isalongside a busy road, pedestrians often getdrenched with water frompassing traffic. It can alsobe dangerous as peoplehave to move onto theroad to overtake slowerwalkers.”Collin’s proposal is toprovide a footpath on theinside of the ESB pollsalong the 1km length ofthe Portrane Road. Hewould also like to see

exercise equipmentlocated on this roadsimilar to that installed onthe Lusk by-pass in recenttimes.“Very many people fromDonabate and Portraneuse this road for recre-ational purposes and it isnot unusual to count asmany as 30 people on thissection of roadway at anytime, so it’s vital that thefootpath is replaced,”Collins concluded.

Liam Cooney, Ballyboughal‘Yes he was right to resign. It’s not other people’s business to inter-fere. Policing should be left as policing, there are just too many busybodies.’

We asked local residents, was theGarda Commissioner right to resignfollowing the whistleblower controversy?

Q:

Joe Geoghegan, Swords‘Yes I do indeed. Because an awful lot has to do with the tapping of the

phones, especially with the court proceedings and especially becausea solicitor was actually on to a client in prison and were being over-

heard through taping the phone calls. That’s against the law, there’sno privacy there. What’s going to happen now is it’s all going to kick

back on the government over court proceedings and everything.’

Liam Herron, Swords‘Probably, especially taking his family into consideration and giventhe pressure he’s under and he came up with the wrong word. I have abit of sympathy for him under the circumstances but there you are, that’s politics.’

Reggie Kearns, Swords‘Yes I do think he should have resigned. When you look at everythingthat’s coming out now, he wasn’t doing his job overall. When you see

so much going on and the lack of communication in his position heshould have been on top of all that. The only thing I worry about politi-

cally is that he’s taken a fall for the Minister for Justice Shatter andthat’s not right either. I think Shatter should step down.’

Patti Fitzsimons, Swords‘I think he was definitely right to resign but I expected more from himbefore he did. He should have apologised to thepublic without having to be asked by anybody.’

Marie Giffney, Swords‘Yes I do think he should have resigned because he must have been

aware of the phone tapping. He couldn’t have not been aware of itgoing on and been the commissioner for all these years and I think

Shatter should be gone. I can’t understand how he’s still there, I thinkit’s disgraceful I really do. If Enda Kenny does not get rid of him the

whole government will fall.’

Michael Dore, Portrane‘No I don’t. He’s sneaking away so he doesn’t

have to apologise. There’s something very dodgy going on.’

David McQuillan, Swords‘He should have gone long before then and Shatter should go withhim without a doubt.’

Cathal Byrne, Donabate‘No I don’t think he should have resigned. I think his whole attitudestands to be questioned, he’s not living in the 21st century. He’s oblig-ated to inform the general public and he’s obligated to his own force. There are items which need to be addressed and they need to open hiscase up.’

Christina Chisholm, Balbriggan‘Yes I do, I don’t think he was right in what he said. He made a mistake

and he should have resigned.’

Anne Hopkins, Swords‘‘Yes he should have. There are just an awful lot of shenanigans we’re

not being told about today.’

Call For End To Hazardous Parking In SwordsLocal councillor, Darragh Butler (FF) has high-lighted a potentially hazardous situation inSwords, which is impacting on residents in atown centre apartment block.Butler told the County Leader, that weekendparking on Well Road in Swords has the poten-tial to cause a serious accident, with seriousconsequences. He said, “I have been contactedby residents of Cooldriona Court, on Well Road, which links Main Street, with Church Road in thetown. This is a narrow road, with double yellowlines, but people accessing shops on MainStreet, feel free to park there, especially onSundays, when there are no traffic wardens onduty,” he said.“This poses a problem for residents ofCooldriona Court, who do not have sufficientspace to reverse out of their car park onto theroad. Another problem that this causes, is forpeople from the Brackenstown area of the town, who use this road, on foot, to shop at thePavilions. There simply is no space for them to

use the footpath, due to cars parking there, meaning they have to walk on the road. This is avery hazardous situation, particularly for peoplewith buggies, or with young children,” he saidand I’m calling on the Council to impose sanctionson people who park illegally there,” he said.

AQUARIUS Jan 20 - Feb 18This is a week when it would be better to dosomething than suffer from uncertainty. Onceyou take action, all changes; as all the indica-tions are that before the week is out you’ll bewondering what all the worry was about.

PISCES Feb 19 - Mar 20In the process of satisfying others’ concerns, willyou resolve a few of your own. However straight-forward things seem, only after exciting devel-opments around Friday will the picture - andyour future - be clear.

ARIES Mar 21 - Apr 20The highlight is on business. Tiresome as this is,particularly during the week’s first half, you’llsoon be thankful for what you’ve learned. Infact, you’ll be calling on facts that, only recently, were boring numbers.

TAURUS Apr 21 - May 20However cautious you are, you’re still likely tobe blamed for whatever arises. While this ispartly unfair, defending yourself achieves little.Biding your time does, however, as, before long, truth will win out.

Gemini May 21 - Jun 20With a business or financial matter you’ll wantto study all the facts. But others are facing facts, too. Enough that, by next week, they’re likely tohave changed their restrictive attitudes for a farmore flexible approach.

Cancer Jun 21 - Jul 22In all matters this week, ask tough questionsand you should get the right answers. And if youdon’t, next Monday’s potent aspect to the planettruth, Pluto, should force any remaining vitalfacts out into the open.

Leo Jul 23 - Aug 23The accent this week is on life’s loves and plea-sures; and your bubbly attitude will spark theentusiasm of others, who then join you intoturning previously dull activities into somethingmore exciting and enjoyable.

Virgo Aug 24 - Sep 22You finally concentrate on what’s important. This, you’ll find, is easier than you expected. Somuch so, that you’ll be discussing ideas that, only a few days previously, simply wouldn’thave been possible.

Libra Sep 23 - Oct 22You worry about hurting others; if not causing arift. The irony is that discussion of issues engen-ders the reverse. Suddenly those you’d thoughtsimply wouldn’t listen are being both morecommunicative and more considerate.

Scorpio Oct 23 - Nov 22Your initial reaction to ideas or offers is unlikelyto be positive. However, reject nothing now.Ideally, you’ll make no decisions until nextMonday’s powerful planetary change, whenthings suddenly fall into place.

Sagittarius Nov 23 - Dec 21You begin to be more assertive in all aspects ofyour life. Your timings good, too, as others willbe delighted with your new clarity. You’re goingto be standing up for a lot: your ideas, for othersand, most of all, for yourself.

Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19In all matters recently you’ve been cautious -perhaps overly so. However, you now questionyour approach and develop a more inventiveoutlook, which introduces ideas as stimulatingas they could be disruptive.

thanks to all thosewomen taking part inthe event, an unbe-lievable €12m wasraised, bringing thetotal since the racestarted up to €137m.It really is an amazingevent which can helpmany charitiescontinue on with thesterling work they aredoing. It would befantastic to raise thesame amount orhigher this year, soladies, why not getinvolved in 2014. Picka charity, enlist thesupport of yourfriends and familyand provide yourcause with the fundsthey so desperatelyneed. Many women willhave no charity inmind when applying

to participate in theFlora women’smarathon. Thesewomen are extremelykeen to be a part ofthe event, but maystruggle to choosethe right charity toraise money for. However, the NorthCounty has manyprominent charities, which will benefit

immensely from yourdonations, big orsmall. These charitiesoffer so many excel-lent services in theNorth County but canonly remain afloatthanks your help. So,

once you’ve appliedto take part in thisyear’s marathon, takea look at some of thecharities on this pageand contact yourchosen one as soonas you can. Manycharities will needyou to register withthem in order for youto donate once youhave completed the

race, so makingcontact with themsooner rather thanlater is a great idea.Contact details can befound on this page,so remember thatevery euro counts.

The marathon is anideal way to donateto a fantastic causeand get fit at thesame time. Many whowant to do somethingfor charity, oftenstruggle to find anactivity to participatein, so by taking partin the mini marathon, you’re kill ing twobirds with the onestone, and takingpart in an event thatthousands getbehind every year. Not only is thewomen’s minimarathon a great wayof raising money forcharity, but it canalso be a fun day outfor everyoneinvolved. Manywomen taking partdon brill iant fancydress outfits to runin, making for quitethe sight as they allpass through thestreets of Dublin city

centre. So if you haveapplied to participatein this years event, suggest to yourrunning partners agroup fancy dressidea to give yourfriends and family on

the sidelines a goodlaugh as you run bythem. It is also verycommon for womento label themselveswith their chosencharity. Be sure to do

this as well, soonlookers knowexactly what causeyou’re running for. You may select acharity based on itsupporting aninterest or activitythat is common withyour own life. It maybe that following theloss of a familymember you maygravitate towards aparticular cause, oryou may have aninterest that you maywish to help protectand preserve. There are many chari-ties out there and forthe most part theyare all above board. One way to ensurethat your money goesto the cause that youwant it to go towards,is to check if thecharity is officiallyregistered. You maydecide to support alocal charity that isnot registered butyou know the peopleinvolved and that maybe a great choice for

you. If in doubt, checkthe registrationnumber. Some charities mayhave a campaign ordrive that mayinterest you. If youwant to find outabout campaigns thatcharities are runningsimply ring them andask! If you like themthen you can supportsomething that ismotivating to you toraise money. Giving is a wonderfulexperience andwhichever charity youdecide upon will bedelighted by yoursupport. Your moneywill go a long way tohelp charities providethe services to peopleor causes in need.Just follow your heartand you will make agreat decision!

Balbriggan, Skerries, Donabate and Districtand Howth-Sutton Credit Unions havecome together as a cohesive unit under thebanner of Progressive Credit Union and theimmediate benefits of this merger wereexplained by Brian Howard, Marketing &Development Officer of Progressive CreditUnion.

“Progressive Credit Union was created afterthe merger of Balbriggan, Skerries andDonabate Credit Unions, which happenedin January last year, and was official lyrenamed as Progressive Credit Union inJanuary of this year. Then, in March thisyear, the transfer of Howth/Sutton CreditUnion, means that we now have four officesin the North County region. Our tradingslogan is ‘Together We Are Better’ whicheffectively means that we can now offer alot more services, as a result of th ismerger.”

Progressive CreditUnion now has officesin the above locationsand employs roughly35 staff. It is governedby 11 directors andthree individuals onthe Board OversightCommittee. Theircommon bond is thegreater Donabate area, the greater Skerr iesarea, Howth andSutton area and thegreater Balbr igganarea, including as faras Stamullen in Co. Meath.

The four credit unions have a long anddist inguished history of serving theirrespective communities. Balbriggan wasestablished on 6th July 1967, the inaugural

meeting was held in Mrs McKeon’s Hall.Twenty-four members joined on the nightand elected the first Board of Directors andSupervisory Committee.

Skerries Credit Union was founded in theearly 1970’s. The idea of starting SkerriesCredit Union was conceived by a group ofapproximately ten people, while DonabateCredit Union was founded in 1968 and hasoperated from many different locations inits early years.

Howth Sutton Credit Union is the longestestablished branch, being founded in1963. It was started in a very small way inthe local Parochial Hall. Continued growthand development led to the opening of thefirst office in Church Street, Howth.

Their memberships are made up of people, who have raised families over the past 50 orso years and this tradition has, in manycases, been handed down through thegenerations.

Some of the immediate benefits whichcustomers can avail of as a result of themerger include, online loan applications, loan calculator, view accounts and balancesand order statements to your address or Estatements. Also included are electronicfund transfers, which enable you to transferfunds to anywhere in the Eurozone, free ofcharge, a range of insurance cover, bill paythrough Paypoint, Foreign exchangethrough Fexco and payments of Social

welfare and wages direct to your accountand the ever popular members car draw.

Online banking went live on 25th February2014. Since then there has been a verylarge interest in growth in members availingof this new service.

With the online banking system, memberscan make payments to their internalaccount in the credit union, and alsoexternal payments and transfers to bankaccounts, household bills and mortgagepayments.

Any kind of change can be very unsettlingfor members, who had questions to askabout the merger, and Progressive CreditUnion is well aware of this. In an effort toreassure members, Brian Howard was quickto allay any lingering doubts or fears ofmembers. He said,

“We want to reassure our members thatwith the merger of the four Credit Unionsthat all offices are safe and secure and thata l l fac i l i t ies wi l l remain avai lable tomembers, with the addition of many newservices.”

“The merger has strengthened the stabilityof our branches/offices and we would liketo inform members that Progressive CreditUnion is still providing loans and lookingafter the needs of thei r members, asbefore. We are always available to discussmembers borrowing options and individualneeds.”

“Our traditional loan purposes, such ashome improvement, special rate car loanand within shares loan are still available andas popular as always,” he said.

The all-important members’ car draw hasalso been retained and is available at allfour branches. “We are offer ing anincreased number of cars which makes itas fair as possible for all, with the next onein May,” explained Brian.

“Although some procedures have changeddue to the nature of all banking require-ments, we are providing loans and lendingas we always have for our members’ needsand we assure our members that we arehere if they need to discuss borrowingoptions.”

The immediate reaction of members is avery positive one, with many expressingtheir satisfaction with the new, enhancedservices. Indeed the advent of these serv-ices was sufficient to encourage long-timeBalbriggan member, Alan Marrey to expresshis delight. He was the first member of thenewly merged credit union to avail of on-line banking, when it was introduced on25th February last.

He said: “In February of this year, I trans-ferred my bank account to the ProgressiveCredit Union and have availed of the newonline banking system. I can now have mywages paid directly in to my account, pay

my bi l ls from the same account, haveaccess to set up payments and view mytransactions at my own convenience.”

He continued, “My wife has also sinceavailed of the new service, which we haveboth found very easy to set up and use. Wewill also be availing of the new debit cardthat is planned to be introduced to theservice over the coming weeks, whichmeans we will have all the financial serviceswe require through Progressive CreditUnion.”

“The changeover to the facilities offered byProgressive Credit Union, was very smooth

and hassle free, thanks to their staff. Theywere very helpful and friendly in assisting usand answering any quest ions we hadregarding the new services now provided,”he said.

Progressive Credit Union’s new logo is theMartello Tower, which is representative ofthe new common bond that each branchpossesses, namely their coastal location. Itis abundantly clear that the choice of namefor this new, dynamic credit union, was noaccident. It is a truly progressive entity, thatis destined to have a hugely beneficialimpact on it’s members and on the future ofbanking in the North County.

During Springtime, your living roomshould have a lot ofspace. Therefore, getthose old books andmagazines out. Thecarpet may be dark anddirty after the winter,so its best to get a newone in the colour youwould prefer. It is,however, advisable toleave it very bright andwarm coloured. This

Changingcurtains, light shadesand duvets coverswhich include your chil-dren’s favourite charac-ters can be very easyand also expensive. Ifyou decide you’re

going to change thingsin your children’srooms and can’t do itall at once try adding anew feature each weekand telling your littledarlings this is a rewardfor them helping tokeep all their toys andbelongings stored.Another great idea isfor you to decorateyour children’s roomwith their art work andfamily photos.

Use Time Wisely

Whatever you decide isthe priority that needsyour attention make a

small start on it. If youtake things one step ata time you will besurprised how fast youcan get things done.Once one project isdone it’s time to starton a new one. Planningand preparation is veryimportant, so make aplan and stick to it.There is nothing betterthan to relax in yourown home after a goodjob has been done.

RegularMaintenance And Repairs

Walk around yourhome and make a listof all the little thingsthat are broken or inneed of repair.Individually, smallrepairs might notseem important, but ifevery room has justone thing wrong,

those small things willadd up to create theimpression that yourhome has beenneglected. If you don’tfeel comfortable tack-ling the repairs your-self, hire a handymanfor a day and watchyour “to do” l istdisappear. to test your indoor airquality. If the resultsprove that your carpetsshould be replaced, choose environmen-tally friendly naturalproducts like tile orlaminate floors. Hard-surface floors are much

easier to keep clean, don’t hold odours, giveyour home an updatedlook and, in general, are more appealing tobuyers. The old adage that youonly get one shot at afirst impression is true. So, make the interior ofyou home shine fromthe moment someonewalks through thedoor. Even if you cleanyour home regularly, there are nooks andcrannies that you maymiss or overlook. Let acleaning service do thedirty work to reallymake your homesparkle.

Spruce Up YourCeilings

One of a room’s most

neglected spaces, theceiling, makes up one-sixth of a room’s totalarea. Updating yourhome’s ceilings will net

a lot of bang forthe buck whileadding archi-t e c t u r a li n t e r e s t .Firstly, if youstill havepopcorn ceil-ings, hire acontractor toscrape them smooth. To add a sophisticatedcustom look to asmooth ceiling, installcrown moulding or boxbeams for a cool look.Ceiling millwork, anattractive featureprevalent in olderhomes, is rarely foundin newer construction.Adding small touches

like these will helpyour home stand outfrom the pack.

Save On AirConditioning Costs

Consider installing awhole-house fan. They’re a great alterna-tive to air conditioning

because they use onlyone-tenth of the elec-tricity of air condi-tioners, saving youmoney. Whole-housefans are considered a“green” home improve-ment, which is apopular selling featurewith today’s home-buyers. As the cost ofelectricity continues toskyrocket, green energyalternatives will onlygain in popularity.

Bring The Outdoors In

Consider turning twostandard windows intoan opening for beautifulFrench or sliding glassdoors. Full-view glassdoors really brighten upthe space and a light

and airy room is alwaysmore attractive. Also, with a view of theoutdoors, the room will

feel much larger.Another bonus is thatmodern doors areenergy-efficient, cutting

down on heating andcooling costs. Thatmeans more cash inyour pocket now and a

financial bonus shouldyou decide to sell.

Refresh The Exterior Paint

The condition of yourhome’s exterior is key tothe overall appeal, sorefresh that facade witha coat of paint. Freshexterior paint will notonly preserve andprotect your home’sexterior siding — theright paint colour canmake a dull homedazzling. By the sametoken, a house paintedwith an overly bright oroverly bland colour willmake a house lessappealing and hurt thevalue, so choose yourcolours wisely. Shouldyou decide to put yourhouse on the marketand the exterior paintlooks bad, a buyer willassume that the interiorof the home has beenneglected too and driveright past.

Conservatories And Extensions

So your home haseverything you needapart from a decentspace to entertainguests or even relaxafter a hard day. Maybean extension or conser-vatory is an idea worthlooking into. This addi-tional space could giveyour house a new leaseof life and that little bitof extra space youdesire. If you want yourkitchen to have extraspace to dine in,choose one of the widerange of conservatoriesout there to enhancethe space.

Boundaries

First port of call: whatare the boundaries anddo you like them? Lookout of each windowand consider whatmeets the eye. Does itdo justice to your inte-rior and your sense ofaesthetic value? If it isa solid but uglyboundary such as awall or a sturdy fence, then it can be sprucedup, using some imagi-nation, in somethingmore evocative. Trybundles of tall hazelrods sewn togetherwith rough manilarope. Alternatively youcould spray yourfencing a deep graphitegrey or a chalky oint-ment pink and bouncesome light back into adreary corner.

Flowers

A clean sweep meansyou can freshen thesoil, add lots of muckand start again – evenjust enough time to getnew bulbs in too.Consider the orientationand available light, andthen get to work oncolour. Play with colour, heights, floweringseasons and throw inyour interests such asgrasses, or bee andbutterfly friendly plants.Vernal gardens aremarvellous for a north-facing bed as they are infull kick in winter andspring and can then getquieter and go over toferns and the like.

Trees And Shrubs

Pruning and trainingis a very inexpensive

route to creating anew look bymanaging mangledand overgrown shrubsand trees. And youhave other options –why not plant a tree, abig beautiful one, andadd a new dynamic toyour garden? Thinkabout whether yourtrees and shrubs arecompatible – try tocreate a look that hascoherence. Ask your-self i f you have afavourite place you’dlike to emulate. Whatare the most evoca-tive planting combina-t ions for you?Consider the usualand inf initelyaffecting choices forseasonal change;colour, blossom, fruits and berries, leafshapes and textures, and then create yournew look.
