Over the years Driving Miss Daisy has built up a reputation for providing a high quality service to senior citizens who no longer drive. They are a regular at retirement villages and rest homes across the country and senior citizen clients form the largest proportion of their client base. But did you know that they also provide our services to younger people who don’t drive?

Some clients have a disability or medical condition which means they can’t drive, however this doesn’t stop them from being very active in other areas of their life; they work in a professional capacity, run businesses, attend school or tertiary education and enjoy socialising with friends. Driving Miss Daisy drives these clients to their place of work or business meetings, assists them to their lectures and social occasions, ensuring they are where they need to be in plenty of time.

They treat every client as an individual, no matter what their personal circumstance. Every client has different needs, and they make sure they discuss this with their clients so that they fully understand them and provide them with the absolute best support and service.

For Driving Miss Daisy, it’s imperative that all their clients are treated with dignity and respect. They are committed to helping their clients get out and about, so they can live life to the full and enjoy every moment.

If you have an activity you would like them to help with please call them today to discuss - they look forward to seeing you soon!

A word from the Executive Officers Desk...

Another AGM is now completed and I would like to thank Stephanie Clare, CEO of ACNZ for attending and being our Guest Speaker.I would also like to congratulate Vaughan Tabuteau who received a certificate to acknowledge the many years of service he has given ACNS.

This year has been marked with consultation and collaboration as we strive to maximize the resources we have to reach as many older people as possible with quality services. Meetings with other Age Concern’s in the Auckland region have resulted in a formal agreement to work towards more operational collaboration and shared activities such as fundraising projects and shared websites.

2016-17 Annual Report Summary of Social Services The Elder Abuse and Neglect Prevention Service continues to be very busy and involves cases that can take many hours of phone work and meetings to arrive at safer outcomes for the older person. An estimated 10% of our older population may be victims of abuse, but much of it is still hidden with nearly 80% perpetrated by family members. Each enquiry needs to be investigated and not all turn out to be abuse or neglect, but fall into a category of general social work and advocacy. This very important aspect of the service is an area to seek more funding for in the future.

The Accredited Visiting Service (AVS) Co-ordinator conducted a service wide client and visitor review in May 2016 in order to obtain accurate numbers of both active clients and visitors. This year has seen a new initiative of three coffee groups established in Takapuna, Glenfield and Milford Malls following an article published in the North Shore Times asking for expressions of interest. It was apparent that there was a need for social interaction outside of the home for potential clients who did not wish to join an existing club but wanted purely friendship and conversation in a small group (6-8 people) in a café setting.

Transport Services - The Van service was discontinued at the end of March 2017 due to decline in patronage. We continue to provide the Volunteer Driving Service for members which enables older people to get to medical and hospital appointments when they have no other help.

Field Officer/Total Mobility/Supportive Services - While predominantly assessing people for Total Mobility applications, the Field Officer also provides help in navigating the Health and Social Services available and linking people to appropriate support and recreational opportunities. There is a great need for more capacity for general social work or a linkage/navigation service role as the 80+ age group is increasingly needing this help. Strategic planning for funding this service is ongoing.

Asian Social/Community Development Services - An Activities Calendar for Chinese Seniors on the North Shore was re-produced and a new resource directory of Chinese Language Service Provision for Older People developed and distributed this year. The Chinese Interest Classes include a Gardening Group which links seven Community Gardens; English Conversation Classes which run weekly with a team of dedicated Kiwi volunteers; a Dancing Group; Singing Group and Art Classes which are all facilitated monthly by Chinese volunteer leaders. A monthly Korean Seniors Support Group was established in February this year. Club Gordon continues to thrive as a small social group for those who are less active, but love musical entertainment and enjoy a chance to meet people. An increase of 2% growth in attendances was noted this year.

Collectively the above services have responded to 6,000 client contacts via case work, matched visitors, home visits and connecting through groups.

Information Services are core services responding to a variety of requests for assistance with housing, transport, health and welfare, social and recreational events. Two key resources - The North Shore Information Directory for Older People and the annual Calendar of Activities continue to be in demand and are well received by members and professionals in the Health and Community areas. Maintaining a public profile and communicating

to the public what we are achieving are important aspects of our accountability and accessibility. Through our Health Promotion website www.agewell.org.nz and Facebook page we have responded to the new social media platforms. The wide distribution of our newsletters by a small team of volunteers and staff to Doctors Surgeries; Rest Homes; Retirement Villages; Community Houses; Libraries; CAB’s and other community sites is the other main vehicle for information on our services.

Our Health Promotion programme aims to provide early intervention skills and knowledge to maintain independence and well-being. A new event this year was the development of the ‘North Shore Age-friendly Business Awards’ with three awards subsequently presented to local businesses. We formed a new partnership with Upper Harbour Local Board to develop an Age Friendly strategy and would be pleased to work with other Local Boards in the same manner.

Information and health promotion activities have had approximately 38,500 contacts with older people through phone calls, social media, dissemination of publications and seminars, talks and workshops.

I am privileged to lead the operations of such a professional and passionate team and I acknowledge them with thanks for their service. The volunteer time that our Board donates under the leadership of Mary Gray is a valued asset for our organisation. Their combined skills and stewardship ensure that ACNS remains relevant for older people’s needs on the North Shore. To all our volunteers, our funders, members and other donors, I extend our heartfelt thanks. Without your support we could not provide the work we do every day.

A welcome arrival with a special interest in the challenges of retirement livingGrant Haworth has returned to Real Estate in Auckland after several years working as a Sales Consultant in Melbourne’s Retirement sector where he developed the specialist skills and empathy which led to him being acknowledged by the industry as an expert in this field. What Grant brings to the table is his expertise, knowledge and genuine passion on how to transition from your current home, the options that are available, and who to talk to. This step by step guidance allows you to make your own fully informed decisions. He often encounters people making retirement living decisions based on the perception of others which is not what making informed decisions is about. Grant understands and appreciates the magnitude of these decisions, and that early professional consultation and guidance can enrich your quality of life. What colleagues say about Grant:“Grant has a wonderful manner with clients and was a highly valued member of every village he worked in. Grant gives 100% all the time.” Louisa Dalley, Regional Sales Manager, Stockland Retirement Living“Being a family owned business established in 1923, Barfoot & Thompson have had the pleasure of helping generations of people and families move home. Having Grant re- join our team with his unique skill set and an understanding of how to provide guidance to the maturing population is fantastic and something I am sure will be highly valued by many.” Pete Taylor, Branch Manager, Barfoot & Thompson Birkenhead

Chairperson’s Report for Year Ended March 2017The decision taken last year not to proceed with the ACNZ proposal to form one national Age Concern organisation has provided the context for developments for Age Concern North Shore over this past year.

We had supported the move to a larger organisation partly because of the messages coming from central Government that they would like to see greater consistency of service delivery and reporting that a national organisation would be better placed to deliver. As a result of this, we supported an Auckland regional application for Ministry of Social Development funding for our Elder Abuse services. This application was successful and we are currently in the process of setting up a regional structure to oversee a regional roll out of funding for the Elder Abuse services. Our regional contract covers south, central and west Auckland Age Concerns, a Pacific Island Elder service provider and an Asian Elder service provider as well as ourselves.

Funding is weighted in favour of lower socio-economic regions and as a result we have had our funding allocation for next year slightly reduced. We expect to make up this deficit through additional fundraising. The other major move currently under way is towards the coming together of all the Auckland Age Concerns

to work towards a system of combined service delivery. The three Auckland Age Concern’s are currently in the process of signing a ‘Memorandum of Understanding’ to design and implement a joint approach in delivery of a range of services to Older People. Our joint Elder Abuse service contract and delivery will provide us with an example of this concept in practice, as we move further down this track. We will retain our discrete organisations which will be a safeguard to ensure that these moves work to support the positive and professional services which we currently provide to our North Shore community of older people.

Janferié and I attended the national conference of Age Concern in Wellington in March which I found a stimulating and informative experience. As well as an excellent programme of keynote speakers and workshops, it provided a valuable opportunity to learn how other Age Concerns operate and what their concerns and challenges are. Similarly, attendance at a regional network meeting of Age Concerns from Kaitaia to Auckland brought up the contrasts and similarities of service issues for rural and urban services.

Our services have continued much as in the past, aside from some minor changes. We have closed our van service recently in response to a fall-off in demand. On the other hand, coffee groups in Malls are a recent new initiative which is proving very popular.

NEED A HAND?

I would like to thank all of those who have contributed to the work of Age Concern North Shore over the past year. Janferié and her very able staff are at the heart of our service delivery. However the services delivered by our volunteer force also makes a huge contribution. The Visiting Service volunteers, the Club Gordon and Asian group programmes and more recently our shopping mall coffee groups are all valuable services that depend on our volunteers for their success. Our Board and Trust Board members are other volunteers vital to maintaining a vibrant organisation. Finally, our financial supporters including you as members provide funding, the lifeblood of our organisation.

A very big-thank you to everyone who has contributed to our past year of successful service to the older people of the North Shore.

Totara ClubTotara Club is a service delivered by Equip Mental Health Services and funded by WDHB and was established to provide an opportunity for people living with a diagnosis of early to moderate dementia to come together and spend time in a safe supportive environment. This can help to maintain and improve their social, cognitive, physical, spiritual and cultural wellbeing, in an interactive programme of choice and ability.

While giving Club Members the opportunity to share company and interests, this time can also provide carers time to pursue their own interests or activities or just to have a rest.

Totara Club is open Monday to Friday 10.00am – 3.00pm. Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea is provided.

No day is a typical day, but they do endeavour to establish a routine of ‘sameness’ as most people seem to work well with consistency. Personal care plans and goal settings are maintained for each person with input from the member and their family/whanau.

For information regarding eligibility and funding options please contact Gael Ansell (09) 477 2637.

When you need us, we’ll help you say goodbye, the way you want to.

Here for North Shore families since 1933

We can even help you plan ahead.

The 2017 Age-friendly Business AwardsAll nominations will go into a draw to win a $50.00 supermarket voucher.

Age Concern North Shore is committed to encouraging businesses/organisations to strive to provide respectful, positive and easy to navigate experiences and services to older people. As part of this, we are inviting older people from the North Shore community to nominate a business for a 2017 Age-friendly Business Award.

To be nominated for an award, the business may demonstrate some of the following: • Be accessible for people of different physical abilities e.g. walker access• Be respectful of your needs e.g. provides extra help if required• Avoids a patronising manner

• Has clear communication e.g. easy to read signage and written material

Nominations can only be submitted by those aged 65 years or older and who reside on Auckland’s North Shore; you may not nominate any business if you are related to or associated with any of its staff and offering a discount (e.g. to SuperGold Card holders), or running a business catering to older people would not, on its own, be considered sufficient evidence for a nomination. Please find the Nomination Form on page 15.

Part of our commitment to encouraging business/organisation to be age-friendly is to provide them with information and a check list so that they can self-audit their ‘age-friendly’ status. Therefore, we invite local businesses to contact Age Concern North Shore to arrange to be sent this information.

IN THE TIME IT TAKES

YOU COULD FIND YEARLY

POWER SAVINGS OF $164

FOR THE KETTLE TO BOIL,

Free & Independent

Could you get a better deal from your power company? There are more electricity retailers offering more deals than ever - but that can make things confusing.

Fortunately there’s one easy, two-minute check you can do to see if there might be a better deal out there.

A quick visit to www.whatsmynumber.org.nz will tell you if there’s savings to be had.

It’s a free, independent website that compares the electricity prices available in your area and lets you know what your potential savings are.

If you don’t have access to the internet Citizens Advice can help you run the check, or you could do it with your family - and get them to check too.

Even if you’re happy with your current company you might learn something to help you have a chat with them about improving their deal.

You could also ask them about different plans and payment options they offer.

AVS UpdateBy now you should have received your new ROV forms for the current period of 1 June - 30 September. If you haven’t received it either by email or post could you kindly contact either Kathryn on 929 2307 or Delia on 929 2310 and we will either email or post one out to you. We have had a record number of ROV forms returned this quarter which is greatly appreciated. We also love reading your comments about the type of things you do with your client during your visits, and the mutual satisfaction that seems to come for both visitor and client from the visits.

We currently have a surplus of visitors available in the East Coast Bays, Glenfield and Albany areas so if you know of an older adult who may be lonely and interested in a weekly visitor for companionship please do not hesitate to contact either Kathryn or Delia.

Lastly a visitor comment from an ROV form.

The client – ‘M’ wakes up and thinks “Goody - its Tuesday!”- ‘Y’ will be coming to visit me today”.

And THAT is why the Visiting service is so important.

Regards

Kathryn McMahon

Since May 2012, Age Concern North Shore has run an English Conversation group for Chinese Senior Citizens 60 years of age and over, with a view to promoting positive ageing through socialisation and the gaining of English conversation skills. The group meets every Wednesday 10.00am-11.45am during term time at the Positive Ageing Centre, The Strand, Takapuna (upstairs, next to Takapuna Library). Volunteer tutors assist groups of participants to learn through simple speaking activities. Our pool of dedicated volunteer tutors needs refreshing! Tutors can be native English speakers or bi-lingual. Previous ESOL or similar teaching experience can be helpful but is not necessary. All we ask for is an interest in helping others and a friendly, relaxed attitude. This is not a formal English class. Our group of wonderful Chinese Senior Citizens have a range of English speaking abilities from complete beginners to advanced speakers who come along just to enjoy a bit of English conversation. The number attending each week ranges from 30 to 50. Worksheets are provided as a guide for tutors. Ennis, one of the tutors says “If any one feels they would like to help - come along to the class on Wednesday. This begins at 10.00am and ends at 11.45am with generous coffee break. We, that help, are a very friendly crowd, enjoy an end of term lunch and you will soon learn how to help with language

New volunteers needed difficulties to be best of your ability. Give it a try. (No charge)!!!”The volunteers who run the classes are very much appreciated by the Chinese participants who attend. “Teacher Ms Helen, Ms Lindsay and all teachers are volunteers, they teach English hard for us to improve our English level, week by week, month by month, year by year. They have family, children and a lot of work to do theirself. They have noble soul and they are angel. I must say ‘I learn from you! I respect you! I love you” – from a very grateful student, Zhao. If you think this might be for you, we’d love to hear from you. For more information please contact: Renata - Phone: 022 694 2590 or Email: [email protected] Alternatively, just turn up on a Wednesday morning and ask for Renata or Helen. “Learning has no age boundary...Our Chinese Senior learners in our weekly English conversation group are showcasing this spirit”.

Te Hokinga ā WairuaEnd of Life ServiceDo your loved ones know your end of life preferences and wishes? There are lots of things to think about and it’s a good idea to have conversations with family and whānau about what you want to happen after you die. You can use Te Hokinga ā Wairua - End of Life Service to create your own plan.

It is especially important to ensure that before you die, someone, (family/whānau/friend) is aware of how to quickly and easily locate the documents that will help them to settle your affairs. Some of the documents you might wish to make readily available are: • a copy of your Will • any instructions about the distribution of personal belongings not covered in the Will • your birth/marriage certificate • a list, including contact details, of organisations and people to notify • instructions on where all your property and investments are and who to contact about them • information about any online accounts you have (e.g. social media accounts) which you want shut down when you die• details of your insurance policies • important documents such as land titles and mortgage agreements • any other documents that may be important to your family eg the original manuscript of a book you have written • any wishes relating to funeral arrangements e.g. contact details for friends; care of your body; burial/cremation; donating of your organs It is important to remember that this is a difficult time for your family/whānau/friends and that ensuring this information is available can help to ease the burden left on them. For more information visit: www.endoflife.services.govt.nz

Thank you to Devonport/Takapuna for their support of Club Gordon

Club Gordon (formerly the Prescott Club) is an initiative of Age Concern North Shore

Age Concern New Zealand (ACNZ) is backing a new Elder Abuse Response Service launched on 1 July by the Hon Maggie Barry ONZM, Minister of Office for Seniors.“We fully support the increased investment in a new Elder Abuse Response Service (EARS) to cover the whole of New Zealand,” says Stephanie Clare, Chief Executive, ACNZ.“It is critical that we help older New Zealanders live a life free from harm.”ACNZ are leaders in Elder Abuse and Neglect Prevention and know the need will only increase as our older population grows and as we all age.“It’s not acceptable to have old older population living in fear and Age Concerns are here to help” It is estimated that in New Zealand 70,000 people over 65 are abused each year and that ACNZ statistics show that 75% of alleged abusers are family members.

New Service for Elder Abuse Response

Age Concerns provides support and aftercare through social connection programmes that are vital to the recovery and rebuilding of self-esteem of those who have suffered abuse, lost trust or become isolated.“We know that we are well positioned to offer these vital services and able to link with other agencies to help any older person” Part of EARS will be a free and confidential 24/7 helpline, 0800 3266 865 (0800 EA NOT OK). Registered nurses will listen and advise anyone who needs information or support about elder abuse - whether they are the victim or someone who’s concerned it might be happening to a friend or family member. Callers will then be referred to local elder abuse services to get the help they need. The Office for Seniors will take over the Elder Abuse prevention and education role from ACNZ. Age Concern North Shore continues to be an Elder Abuse Response Service provider. If you have any concerns please contact us on 489 4975 or call Alison Bravenboer phone 929 2309 or Jane Lai 929 2311.
