ENDLESS SUMMER CINDY GOODMAN Warmer and drier autumn predicted JANE SEYD [email protected] The evenings may be cooling down but don’t pack up the sunglasses just yet. The Lower Mainland is likely to bask in some continued balmy weather in the coming weeks, despite the official start of fall on Monday evening. A weak El Niño weather pattern is pointing to warmer than usual temperatures and drier than normal conditions to continue into the fall, said Dayna Vettese, meteorologist with the Weather Network, which recently released its predictions heading into the autumn season. The pattern is a continuation of what the West Coast experienced over the summer months, Students back in class on Monday See El Niño page 9 JEREMY SHEPHERD [email protected] For public school students on the North Shore, the endless summer ends Monday. Kids are scheduled to be back in school next week after teachers voted 86 per cent in favour of a six-year deal with the province Thursday. North Shore schools are slated to swing their doors open to returning students for a brief orientation Monday followed by a full day of classesTuesday. Monday’s session will mainly serve as an opportunity for schools to confirm enrolment, which is a key challenge in North Vancouver, explained superintendent of schools John Lewis. The district is attempting to register 250 students from private schools and other school districts who are still awaiting release from their former school district. “In order for us to register a student, they need to be withdrawn from the database in the former school district,” Lewis stated in an email. Kindergarteners will start schoolTuesday. However, the gradual entry process — which is intended to ensure a smooth transition to the classroom — will be slightly abbreviated inWest Vancouver. “The things that we normally do will still happen, it’ll just be a bit shorter,” saidWest Vancouver School District spokeswoman Bev Pausche. Gradual entry normally stretches into the second week of the school year, but this crop of kindergarteners will have two days of short sessions with small groups followed by a full day of kindergarten Thursday. Despite the wishes of some parents, the school year will not be extended, according to Education Minister Peter Fassbender, who spoke to CFAX radio in Victoria on Friday. “We’re not going to Schools re-open with short first day, as enrolments are confirmed See Fassbender page 9 Local News . Cue the ominous bass.Sixgill sharks are beingspotted in Howe Sound.

Vancouver Aquariumscientists have made atleast three sightings ofthe ancient species offWhytecliff Park, PointAtkinson and Hutt Islandin recent months.

This is absolutely newand we have excellentscuba records from1964, said Jeff Marliave,vice-president of marinescience at theVancouverAquarium.

Until this year, thesharks have been known tohang out around Denmanand Hornby islands and inthe waters around Seattle,Marliave said.

Sixgills are a primitivevariety of shark knownfor having an extra gilland no forward dorsal n,unlike most sharks thatcome from a differentevolutionary branch.

They grow upwardsof four metres long andtypically prefer to stayhundreds of metres belowthe surface.

Though theres neverbeen any reported attackson humans, sixgills canbe a threat, especially ifprovoked, Marliave said.

If (divers) were reallystupid and invited it, itspossible.Theyre capableof ripping a chunk.Theyre

very big sharks, he said.Ive got a diver whosfrightened every time Ijoke Look out for sixgillsbecause not every diverwants to see them.

After Marliave wrotea sixgill post for theVancouver Aquariumsblog, more sightings havebeen coming in.Theaquarium hopes diverswho spot them will reportthem via the aquariumswebsite, or via thefacebook group Six GillSharks.

Gathering data on theirpresence will help explainwhy theyve decided tocome to Howe Sound.

The obvious answeris that theyre nding asteady supply of food, mainly herring, hake, pollock and harbour seal

pups, all of which have hadlocal populations explode,Marliave said. But thatsonly part of the question.Whats driving the changein species the sharks feedoff is a much larger one.

Marliave theorizesits natural warming andcooling of ocean currentsknown as the patterns ElNio and La Nia.

Its predicted therewill be these unpredictableshifts in the balance of lifeon earth and in the seabecause climate doesntstay the same all the time.It shifts around, he said. You cant predict them.We dont know that much. Were good at saying inreal time now whether itsEl Nio or La Nia, whichis not something to be tooproud of since Peruvian

    peasants have been doingit forever.

Climate regime shiftsare not to be confusedwith carbon-driven climatechange, though thatcertainly is happening,Marliave said.

Other human andnaturally occurring factorsare also at work in HoweSound, as the damagefrom long-closed minesand industry subsides andmitigation efforts takeeffect.

We have worked hardto oversh Howe Soundfor over a century andweve done a good job.We extirpated a couple ofrocksh species. Of course, the aquarium succeededin reintroducing the blackrocksh and were reallyproud of that, he said.

Dear Editor:There are many reasons to laugh atWestVancouver

councils decision to support a ban of LNG tankers inHowe Sound.

Firstly the municipality has no jurisdiction overthe proposed site for the LNG plant. Secondly, thecouncillors show a ridiculous lack of knowledge on whatLNG is all about. For years the B.C. Pilot Authority hasbeen guiding major marine freighters up Howe Sound toSquamish terminals with no incidents or accidents. Foryears B.C. Ferries has plied the waters from Horseshoe

Bay to Bowen Island and Langdale with rarely anincident. To bring in the pollution of the waters offBritannia Beach caused by the mine there is ludicrous. Itslike chalk and cheese.

The councillors show their collective ignorance on thissubject and rather than proposing a ban on LNG tankersthey should be supporting this new industry and thejobs it will create and a boost to the B.C. and Squamisheconomies.Angus MitchellNorthVancouver

Best laid plansOur Scottish cousins stood at ahistoric precipice this week anddecided to stay put. With the vote to separate from

the United Kingdom failing by 10percentage points, the question issupposedly settled for a generation. It was a powerful concept.

Dismantling the ties toWestminsterand taking real control of your destiny. Its not hard to see why so many Scotssupported it.But the day was won by those wanting

to keep the status quo. Given the rockyand, at times, bloody relationshipbetween the two nations, it wasntnecessarily out of love. Much of theNo campaign centred around not theScottish identity, but the unknowneconomic woes that would befall thebonny country. Some bigger businesses

threatened to uproot and head south. The oft-repeated political lesson learnedis that voters regardless of howpassionate they may feel about otherissues can usually be persuaded ifthey feel its in their economic bestinterest. While theYes side is surely licking

their wounds and contemplating apolitical future that looks and feels nodifferent than the past 307 years, theScots as a whole have won a number ofvictories on this road.Theyve won morelegislative powers and posted a voterturnout and level of voter awarenesssimply not seen when Canadians choosewhich politicians represent them.Scotland and the rest of the U.K.

like Quebec and the rest of Canada are stuck with each other.Lets all make the best of it.

Dear Editor:A few weeks ago you published some material regarding

the problems with slow ambulance service. I think I canidentify part of the problem.

A few years ago I had to take an ambulance to LionsGate due to back spasms. I was in unbelievable pain andcould not walk or even roll out of bed I had to be takenout on a stretcher.

Once in hospital waiting for treatment, the ambulance

crew had to stay with me until I was looked after. Id guessthey were tied up for an hour. Sure, I was in severe pain, but at no serious risk. Why could a triage nurse not see me,determine that I was not going to die on them, and releasethe ambulance for people who could be at serious risk?

I do not know how often this happens, but it struck meas a real waste of resources.John HunterNorthVancouver

Maybe all PresidentSkroob needed was afour-year-old by his sideat all times to tell it tohim straight.

In the Mel Brooksmovie Spaceballs, theunscrupulous presidentof Planet Spaceball getstalked into letting Snottybeam him down from hisofce to the control room.

What the hell, itworked on StarTrek,Skroob says. But itdoesnt go so well onPlanet Spaceball dueto a microconvertermalfunction, Skroob isreassembled with his headon backwards. Stunnedto be looking at theworld from a whole newperspective, Skroob hasone important question:Why didnt somebody tellme my ass was so big?!

Skroob, no doubt, wassurrounded by yes men hiswhole life who would neverdream of telling their bossthat he could stand to losea few boards off the back

porch, maybe focus a littlemore on the free weightsquats and a little less onthe free range chickenwings. Ive discovered, however, that there isone form of personaladviser who will give youtheir honest assessmentregardless of whetheryoure a Druish Princess ora lowly Mog: the four-year-old human.

This all started a coupleof months ago when I wasidly scratching my nose andrealized Id been going at

it for a good while but stillhad a lot of unscratchedsurface area to cover.Thethought that I might havea big nose never reallyoccurred to me until thatexact moment. The more Ithought about it, however, the more I realized thatall the telltale signs werethere Halloween masksnot tting quite right, small woodland creaturessheltering beneath myface during rainstorms, rhinoceroses banging at mydoor all hours of the nightduring mating season.Plus a look at my familytree reveals one particularline blessed with athleticprowess, kind hearts andmassive schnozzers. Was Iincluded in that picture?Id never thought about itbefore.

I took a good hard lookin the mirror. From thefront I didnt see too muchout of the ordinary. Fromthe side, though, therewere troubling indicationsof honker gigantus. Up

top things looked prettynormal but down nearthe tip it looked a bit likesomeone snuck a pingpong ball in there one nightwhilst I slept.

No one, however, hadever mentioned it to me.Were they being polite?Wasit all in my head?

I asked my wife: doI have a big nose?Theawkward silence thatfollowed was telling, butnot denitive. I droppedthe subject for good, Ithought.

Just last week, though, Igot my answer. It arrived, completely out of the blue, during a pleasant breakfastwith my four-year-old son.

Daddy, you have a bignose, he said.

Thank you!Thank youfor your honesty. Its like a

breath of fresh air inhaledthrough giant nostrils. NowI know the truth, you littleAbraham Lincoln, and Idont care if you choppeddown that cherry tree.

My nose is small, daddy. OK kid, thatsenough.

It was then that Irealized that if I ever wantthe unvarnished truthabout something Ill needto nd someone who hasntperfected the little whitelie. Its not that young kidsdont ever lie, its just thattheir lies are all terriblytransparent ones, like yesdaddy, I asked mama andshe said that I could haveice cream and cookies forbreakfast. And coffee. Andbeer.

But when it comes tomatters of opinion, its

straight truth. Its not allcriticism either. When Ihear my son say Ooo,daddy, you look fancy, Iknow Ive done somethingright. Its nice to know that, even with my big nose, Icould still possibly makeit into the pages of PQMagazine (PreschoolersQuarterly).

I dont want to turn thisinto an episode of Kids Saythe Darndest Things, butnow that my oldest sonhas hit age four Ive got tosay that some of the thingshe says are amongst thedarndest Ive ever heard. Afew minutes before givingme the nose news, my sontook an interest in my newhaircut.

The deal struckbetween the B.C.Teachers Federation andthe province left manyteachers conicted, saidWestVancouverTeachersAssociation president RobMillard.

I heard one teachersaying they voted with theirhead and said yes, but intheir heart they wanted tovote no.

Asked about anysacrices made by theteachers, Millard replied:Just about everything.

But while teachersdidnt get all they wanted,Millard said improvementsto the education fundshould allow for help with

    class size and composition.MediatorVince Ready

was integral in facilitatingthe deal, said Millard.

Without (Ready) itwouldve been impossiblebecause there wasabsolutely no trust there.

Looking ahead, Millardsaid the school systemmust pay attention to thebacklog of students whoclearly need support butarent getting it becausethey havent been assessed.

While many parents arerelieved at the prospect ofgetting the kids out of thehouse and back into theclassroom, they shouldalso be mindful of decitsfaced by school districts, according to NorthVancouver teacher andparent Jennifer Slack.

    School boards are not

allowed to run at a decit,so that means cuts arecoming, she stated in aletter to the editor.

Citizens still need tohold the governmentresponsible for fundingeducation, according toSlack.

when average temperatureswere a couple of degreesabove normal and onlyabout half the usual rainfell.

Dry conditions were aresult of a big ridge in thejet stream that remainedsemi-permanent over theWest Coast for most ofthe summer and alsoresulted in drought inCalifornia.

Expect a continuation ofthat trend, saidVettese.

So far, daytime hightemperatures are stillhovering one or twodegrees above normal forSeptember, said Andre

    Besson, meteorologist withEnvironment Canada.

Those will cool slightly, and we can still expectsome day-to-day showers, but the overall warmer-and-drier pattern will continue,he said.

Normally, the LowerMainland sees between350 and 400 millimetres ofrainfall between Septemberand November. But thisyear, We expect to be alot drier than that goingforward, saidVettese.

Its possible the same ElNio-inuenced weatherpattern will continuethrough winter as well.

    To make seasonalpredictions, meteorologists

look at long-range weathermodels that includepatterns like El Nio or LaNia connected to oceantemperatures. They alsolook at statistics for pastyears that have had similarweather patterns.

In June, meteorologistspredicted that summerwould be hotter and drierthan usual on the B.C.coast which turned outto be accurate.

Other parts of thecountry probably wonthave such an enjoyable falland winter season.

Strolling down the hallknown as the art walk, onemight never guessthey were in a health carefacility.

From watercolourlandscapes to photographsand oral oil paintings, walking the corridors ofLions Gate Hospital and itsneighbouring buildings has anew, more calming feel.

The Lions Gate HospitalFoundations art programhas been bringing artworkinto the halls of the hospital,Evergreen House and NorthShore Hospice for almosttwo years, and will soon beadorning the walls of thenew HOpe Centre this fall.

Joanne McLellan, director of planned givingat Lions Gate HospitalFoundation, says theprogram was patterned afterone atVancouver GeneralHospital.

The whole idea was thatby making the environmentin a hospital more beautifulwith different kinds of art right now weve got mostlypaintings and photographs, but hopefully well get otherdifferent kinds of art as wego forward it just givespatients and visitors and

staff a bit of a diversionin an often very stressfulsituation, says McLellan.

The program waslaunched about two yearsago, with help fromVGH,on the basis of the HOpeCentre, she says. The newNorthVancouver psychiatryand education facilityis expected to be fullyoperational mid-November.

It was going to bea brand new building, beautiful architecture, thatneeded some beautifulartwork, says McLellan. Sowe launched the program onthe basis that we would belooking for art for the HOpeCentre but in the meantimeit would be housed at LionsGate.

    The foundation currently

has approximately 80original pieces throughoutthe hospital.

It was really all aboutthe healing power of art, says McLellan. It was a wayof creating a calming andattractive environment thatif someone was having a badday, whether it was staff ora patient or family memberor visitor, it just gave them a

different perspective for evenjust a short time.

Some of the artworkwill be moved to the HOpeCentre, she says.

The idea is to continueto expand the program sothat all areas of all of thefacilities have access to theart, says McLellan.

Yourmetabolism is thesum of energy your bodyexpends each day.

With a high metabolism, you can eat more and notgain weight. But raising yourmetabolism and keepingit elevated usually requiresconsiderable effort. Luckily, there are ways to hack intothe metabolic system, which, when combined with ahealthy lifestyle, will helpyou quickly lose weight andfeel great.

    The Good

    1) Build LeanMuscleFive pounds of lean

muscle burns through vepounds of fat annually viaincreased metabolism alone.Thats saying nothing of allthe calories burned whilegaining and maintaining thismuscle mass.

Most novices can gainabout 10 pounds of leanmuscle in one year afteradding proper strengthexercises to their workouts. One key is focusing onlarger muscle groups, suchas the thighs, gluteals, latsand pectorals.

    2)Work Out EarlyAll workouts result

in short- and long-termmetabolic gains. To get moreof the former, try workingout in the morning whenyour metabolism is naturallyjust ramping up to face theday. Getting this early jumpstart will super-charge yourmetabolism to let you burnfat all day long. Its calledthe after-burner effect.

Whatever you do, dontwork out right before bedwhen your metabolism willshortly slow to a crawl asyou sleep.

    3) Eat OftenMost nutritionists

recommend eating at leastve times per day to keepyour metabolism runningat an even keel. Besidesspacing your allotteddaily calories out evenly, also focus on eating moreprotein, which is slow-burning to maintain fullnessand helps build lean muscle.Above all, avoid the simplecarbohydrates in whitebreads and rened sugars. These will take any excuseto become fat and hitch aride on your hips.

    4) Stay HydratedWith so many good

reasons to drink water, youhardly need another. Still,it should be noted that thechemical processes involvedin burning fat actuallyrequire water to workeffectively. Drinking cold

water increases metabolismeven more by forcing yourbody to expend calorieswarming the water to bodytemperature. To maximizethis effect, ensure abouthalf of your daily water isconsumed ice cold.

    5) Drink Coffee andGreenTea

A well-known stimulantand appetite suppressant, caffeine increases yourmetabolism by ve to 15 percent. If your unique body

FIT&HEALTHYHave you snored for years? Does yourbreathing stop at night and your bed partnershakes you awake? Has your wife or husbandmoved to the guest room? Should they beworried? How does your breathing, or notbreathing, at night effect your health? Thereare many studies now implicating SleepApnea in other health problems.

Sleep Apnea can contribute to high bloodpressure. Chronic high blood pressure iscommon and affects over 40% of peoplebetween the ages of 50-60 years of age.Approximately 50% of those with SleepApnea have high blood pressure. Patientswho do not have high blood pressure whenthey develop sleep apnea will on averagedevelop high blood pressure within 4 yearsof having untreated sleep apnea.

Sleep Apnea canmake youmore likelyto suffer a heart attack, stroke and atrialfibrillation (a problemwith the rhythmof the heartbeat).

Type 2 Diabetes is a growing concern in

our population and often is coincident withobesity however blood sugar (glucose) levelsare higher among those with Sleep Apnea.Up to 80% of diabetics have Sleep Apnea.

Weight gain raises your risk of developingsleep apnea and up to 2/3s of people withSleep Apnea are overweight but that alsoleaves 1/3 within normal weight.Weightgain is also a consequence of having sleepapnea and this vicious cycle can spiralpatients into becomingmore obese evenwhen followingmedically supervised dietand exercise programs. With the 1/3 withinnormal weight its important to not assumeall patients with Sleep Apnea are overweight.

Unexplained daytime fatigue is one of themost common reason patents are tested forsleep apnea. Daytime sleepiness puts you ata much higher rate of accidents both at workand on the road. People with sleep apneaare up to 5 timesmore likely than normalsleepers to have traffic accidents.

Oral appliance therapy is a sleep apnea

and snoring treatment option that wasnot readily available until this year with Dr.Sharnell Muirs opening of her practice inLynn Valley.

I am very excited to provide this highlyeffective treatment here on the North Shore, says Dr. Muir. The biggest challenge will beto get the word out that it is now available.Patients on the North Shore have had nochoice but to be offered CPAP, even if theydont have Severe Sleep Apnea, as that wasall that was available for their physicians tooffer them.

As one of only a handful of clinicians whopractices solely in the field of Oral ApplianceTherapy for Snoring and Sleep Apnea, Iprovide Level III Home SleepMonitors topatients and have the results interpretedby a board-certified Sleep Physician. Then Iprovide all of this information to your familyphysician. I am able to provide effectivetreatment for Snoring and Sleep Apnea, withproper medical follow up and am constantlykeeping your family physician informed. Thesystems and protocols I have developedexceed current guidelines and provide anexceptional quality of medical care helpingout patients and their physicians.

To find out more, visit Dr. Muirs websiteat sleepbetterlivebetter.ca or call CanopyIntegrated Health today at 604-973-0210.

Finally there is a new treatment option readily available on the North Shore.

Hidden Dangers of Sleep Apneaand Snoring Are you at Risk?

    WORK

    Find an advisorwhofits your needs

    Lori PinkowskiMaking Cents

Many investors havetrouble nding a goodnancial advisor but byasking a few importantquestions, I believe youcan increase your chancesof hiring one of the goodones and also be moresure that they are theright t for your needs.

The initial meeting withan advisor involves youexplaining your situationto them. Once they knowmore about you, its yourturn to see if they are agood t for you. Not alladvisors are able to offerthe services you need soits important to work withsomeone who matches yourneeds.

Start by asking Do youhave experience in dealingwith nancial situationslike mine? Financialadvisors choose the typeof business they do. Somewill specialize in retirementplanning, some will focuson small cap, higher riskstocks and some mayconcentrate more on bondsand GICs.This makes itespecially important toensure that the advisor isnot just knowledgeable in

the area that you require, but specializes in yoursituation.

You should inquireas to why they becamea nancial advisor? Inany business, you wantto deal with people whoare passionate about theirprofession. Look for thatpassion when they answerthis question.

Its a good idea to askWhat services can youprovide me and how willmy account be managed? You need to know if theadvisor needs to call youevery time they make achange in your portfolioor if the account will bemanaged on a discretionary

basis (which means theymake the decisions foryou). Will they chargecommission or will it be feebased? Can they provideyou with a nancial plan, insurance or new issues?

To learn more aboutthe client servicing, askhow often you can expectto hear from them or theirteam?Within our ofce, clients are personallymet with twice a yearto review their portfolioand performance. Inbetween these meetings,we schedule phone callsto get an update on theirsituation and also providea market update andgeneral overview of theirportfolio. In our opinion,we believe that meetingonce a year isnt enough.

Be sure to ask Whatdo you do about a losinginvestment or stock? This might be the mostimportant question as itrelates to risk management. You dont want to hearthat they dont worryabout it because it alwaysbounces back or thatthey never choose a badstock. Nobody has a

perfect batting average soyou need to understandthe process that they willimplement so that yourportfolio is protected. Afterevery bull market comesa bear market and youneed to make sure you areprepared.

And the nal questionto ask is What percentageof your net worth is inthese investments? You

want your advisor to haveskin in the game. A goodresponse is to hear that alltheir liquid investments arein the same things you aregoing to be.This makessure they are on the samepage as you are.

I caught up with IolaKnight a few days beforethe 22nd Annual PioneerSkiers Reunion, heldWednesday, Sept. 17this year on HollyburnMountain.

A photograph from hercollection takes us backto the spring of 1946.Here is Iola alongsideFrancesVajda on GrouseMountain, both womenin the ski-wear of the day,Frances on skis and Iolawearing her little whitehiking boots.

Iola Musfelt was 23years old in 1946, ahiker and a mountain

climber, soon to takeup skiing thanks to herfuture husband, GordonKnight, a fellow memberof the University of

    British ColumbiasVarsityOutdoors Club.

Its a wonder Iolahad time for anythingextracurricular. She wasstudying sciences at UBC,exceptional for womenat the time. Even moreexceptional, Iola wasworking towards a mastersdegree with a PhD on thehorizon. Each weekdayincluded an early morningtrek from the family homeon Dundas Street acrossthe city to the universitycampus and a full day ofstudy that ended when thelibrary closed. Saturdays, she earned 35 cents an

hour working at Spencersdepartment store. Iolaachieved the mastersdegree but circumstancesconspired to prevent thePhD.This continues toprovoke a pang of regret, but only momentarily. Iolais a woman who takes lifeas it comes.

That attitude, helpedalong by the close bondsforged over time withfellow Hollyburners, sawIola through the PioneerSkiers Reunion this year, the rst without Gordonby her side. Iolas husband, best friend and companionfor 68 years, died in May,two months before his93rd birthday.

Youve heard howwe got involved withHollyburn, haventyou? Gordon and I haddeveloped an exerciseprogram of cycling, hiking, skiing and swimming.A day of cycling onthe mountain in 1992happened to coincide withthe rst Pioneer SkiersReunion. We noticeda lot of people our age

A memoir by pioneerskier Naomi McInnesis posted with others onthe Hollyburn HeritageSociety website. Shebegins, In the late 1930swe were one big family, wewho hiked, skied, choppedwood, built log cabins andescaped each weekend tothe marvelous play landfondly referred to as upthe hill. Such memoriesinspired Naomi and herhusband Bud to reunitethat family and recallthose halcyon days onHollyburn.

Gordon and Iolaparticipated in thereunion every year afterthat auspicious day atHollyburn Lodge. Asthe seasons rolled on,their connection with themountain deepened. In1998, with Bob and GretaTapp and other cabinowners, they set up the SkiCamp Heritage Project torestore Hollyburn Lodgeat First Lake. A few years

later, the Knights joinedwith theTapps to establishHollyburn HeritageSociety, dedicated to thecelebration of mountainlife on the North Shore.

We were alwaysmountain people, saysIola. A happy day inGordons life was the dayour son said hed ratherstay home and ski than goto Hawaii.

The Knights raised theirchildren in a house theybuilt in 1964, one ofWestVancouvers rare Alcanhouses, constructed withaluminum window framesand cladding.WithTonyandTami in school atIrwin Park elementary andHillside secondary, Iolahad time to return to thesciences, this time as avolunteer at theVancouverAquarium, a commitmentthat continued into the1980s. By then, withGordon retired from hiscareer as a civil engineer, the Knights had addedsnowshoeing, cyclingand cross-country skiingto their rota of outdooractivities. There was

    TASTE

    Smallerwineries adrawatTopDrop

    TimPawseyNotable Potables

Last week saw theunveiling of a newbeverage festival inthe form ofTop DropVancouver.

The initial two-day event, which focused on terroir-based smaller wineries, waswell received and looks setfor success. The key wasthe selection of smallerwineries (and breweries) thatappealed to a more curioustaster, not to mention theever more sophisticatedsommelier communitylooking to liven up their list.

Top Drop organizerschose Main Streets HeritageHall to launch the event. Its a warm and welcomingspace that suited the smallbut select group of wineriesand breweries (and oftentheir principals) on hand. Ihave a hunch that based onthe response its a space theymight quickly outgrow.

Heres just a snapshotof what you would havediscovered atTop Drop,an event dened as muchby who was there as whowas not. Some of these lesscommercial names may bea little more challenging totrack down, but you shouldgo out on a limb occasionallyto taste something differentand even esoteric.Maybepretend youre a sommelierand surprise your friends.Ben MarcoTorrontes

    2013 (Mendoza)A very different take

onTorrontes, this wine isfermented for three monthsin French Oak, which givesa little added heft.Mix insome toasty aromas withprecise stonefruit and limenotes on the palate, andyou might nd yourselfre-thinking Argentinasmainstay white ($22, privatewine stores, includingEverythingWine, 91 points).Ben Marco ExpresivoMalbec 2012 (Mendoza)

Blend of mainly Malbecwith 20 per cent CabSauv., plus Syrah,Tannat,PetitVerdot and Bonardayield intense dark cherryand mocha notes up frontfollowed by a plush andopulent palate with generousbut elegant black fruit, andtoast and anise notes ina lingering nish (BCLS$41.99, 92 points).Kunde SonomaValleyChardonnay 2012

Californians love to comenorth and tell us theyvepulled back on the oak, butthis one really has. Gentletoast and vanilla notes ontop, followed by tropicaland citrus with lively acidity, some creaminess and aclean, lingering nish.Anexcellent balance of fruit andacidity, with quite restrainedoak and with a denitemineral hint (private winestores, $25-$29, 90 points).Vina Gravonia BlancoCrianza 2004 (BodegasHeredia, Rioja)

White Rioja you say?Yesindeed, and I can assureyou this is one of the mostintriguing Spanish winesyoull ever taste. Plus its 10years old. It gets left in oakfor four whole years. Nutty, layered and complex, almostno-esque, with herbal andstony mineral notes througha very focused palate.Tryit with a piece of Spanish

cheese. Unquestionablythe most intriguing wine ofthe day (BCLS $39.50, 92points).Chateau de MontfauconLes Gardettes Rouge2011
