Cllr Haughey, who lost his Dáil seat in the 2011 General Election, said Fianna Fáil will now have to reconsider its strategy for Dublin Bay North following the outcome of the selection convention.

“This will be a work in progress,” he stated. “Fianna Fáil has a huge battle on its hands to win a seat in Dublin Bay North and will be fighting for the fifth and final seat.”

Senator Averil Power caused huge turmoil in the party in May when she resigned from Fianna Fáil.

Referring to this, Cllr Haughey added: “At the outset I believe the plan was to run myself and Averil Power [on the Dublin Bay North ticket].

Down but not out!

QUEEN OF THE CASTLE: Cllr Deirdre Heney (FF) pictured with her supporters at Clontarf Castle after she won the nomination to contest Dublin Bay North for her party in the general election. ▪

“I believe Senator Power, if she runs as an Independent, will take votes mostly off other parties and Independents rather from Fianna Fáil.”

Although Deirdre Heney won the nomination by an extremely tight margin, there is a strong possibility that her council colleague in the Clontarf Local Electoral Area (LEA) could be added to the ticket at a later date.

Cllr Haughey, a former Junior Minister (Education and Science) and Lord Mayor of Dublin in 1989, was strongly fancied to win the nomination over Heney after Cllr Tom Brabazon and Aileen Woods withdrew from the race.

Cllr Haughey said he was “not too disappointed” following his defeat.

“I take political victories and defeats in my stride and will

get over this quite quickly,” he added. “Life is too short to worry about things like this.”

Deirdre Heney, a native of Drumcondra and now living in Killester, has been a Dublin city councillor for 15 years.

She was re-elected in the Clontarf LEA at last year’s local elections for the fourth consecutive time.

Speaking at the convention in Clontarf Castle, Cllr Heney said she was “truly honoured and humbled” to be chosen by Fianna Fáil members to contest the election in Dublin Bay North.

“I look forward to visiting every home in the constituency over the coming months,” she said.

“I want to pay tribute to Cllr Tom Brabazon, Cllr Seán Haughey and Aileen Woods who were also nominated for this convention.

“All of them are extremely hard-working representatives in this constituency and I look forward to working closely with them throughout the election campaign.”

Cllr Heney said the next election will determine the future direction of Dublin and the country. “We are constantly being told about the strong recovery that is being experienced in Dublin, and yet so many people across the city are seriously struggling to see a single improvement in their quality of life,” she added.

It’s a Fair day for Balbriggan award winnersA NORTHSIDE school claimed three top awards at Northern Ire-land’s largest science fair.

Loreto Secondary School, Bal-briggan, collected the awards at the Sentinus Young Innovators Exhibition.

Meibh O’Sullivan and Isabelle Martin claimed the Young Sci-entist Overall Winner award for their project which looked at the effects of taking photos on mem-ory and forgetfulness.

Lauren Murphy won the Intel Young Innovator Award for her project - an aid for the rehabilita-tion of a clenched fist in Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Dr Niamh Kelly completed the hat-trick for the north county Dublin school when she won the Intel Teacher of Ex-cellence award. This year over 500 competitors were among approximately 3,000 people who attended the show at Ulster Uni-versity, Jordanstown, on June 23.

Over 150 projects competed to win 80 prizes including an op-portunity to represent the region in a number of international sci-ence and engineering competi-tions in America and the UK.

Alongside the exhibition and competition, attendees were treated to a number of interactive shows designed to bring science to life. BBC One Show’s resident TV scientist, Dr Marty Jopson, de-livered his ‘Record Breaking Sci-ence’ show where he delved into

the science behind his recent TV world record successes.

The annual science showcase celebrates the achievements of young people in Science, Tech-nology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). It centred on an exhibi-tion of innovative and exciting science projects carried out by students from primary and sec-ondary schools across the island of Ireland.

The projects covered a wide range of subjects and real world challenges including:

• Development of an eczema sleep suit to aid eczema suffer-ers

• An investigation into the use of rainwater as a renewable en-ergy source

• Development of a farm safety app to promote safety on the farm

• A cellular analysis on the ef-fects of garlic extract on cancer cell growth

• An investigation into how so-cial media can affect mood and either make you happy or sad

• Development of a self-build electric car

• A mathematical analysis of winning number patterns in the National Lottery draws

The annual event is organised by Sentinus, an educational char-

ity working with over 60,000 young people a year in Northern Ireland to deliver fun and reward-ing programmes that promote

engagement in STEM subjects.Further details about the event

LAST Friday marked the 19th anniversary of the murder of journalist Veronica Guerin, callously shot dead in her car while stopped at traffic lights on the Naas Road on June 26, 1996.

It may be stretching it to describe it as a ‘JFK moment’ but for those in my profession it was nothing less than that.

I was with a group of journalists in Dublin Airport, en route to Brussels on a press trip, when news of Veronica’s death broke. Some of them had

known her personally and were understandably devastated to learn of the brutal murder of a colleague.

Much has been written about the impact of Veronica Guerin’s killing in the intervening two decades. There have been countless articles, numerous books and no less than two big screen movie versions of the fearless reporter’s life and death.

In the face of widespread public revulsion, politicians were forced to up their game in the State’s war against criminality, using new tools like the Criminal Assets Bureau to bring the gangster underworld to heel – with some notable results.

The despised criminal John Gilligan, who was linked to her killing but acquitted in court, must now know something of the fear that Veronica felt in those final moments, having himself been at the receiving end of an assassination attempt.

Not that Veronica would have taken any joy in this – the attack on Gilligan only served to prove that the threat posed to society by drug gangs was as prevalent

as ever.Today, feuding between rival

criminals still results in violence and death – sometimes at the expense of innocent victims. It continues to present the authorities with their biggest challenge since ‘The Troubles’.

Journalism remains a high-risk profession, both at home and abroad. But since Veronica’s death, there is less complacency within the profession.

In this country, many threats to press freedom exist, with media outlets regularly forced to run the gauntlet of career-shattering libel actions. But no threat is greater than that faced by Veronica Guerin on that sunny June afternoon in 1996.

We are still haunted by it.

Ace fundraiser aims to help local childA FUNDRAISING event with a difference was held recently on the Northside to raise funds for a local boy and Muscular Dystrophy Ireland (MDI).

Naglis Montvilas (13), from Balrothery, has spinal muscular atrophy. He is a member of MDI, the national charity that pro-vides information and support to people affected by muscle-wasting conditions.

The event on June 21 was a Motorcycle Poker Run. Par-ticipants drove to five mystery points where they were each dealt a card for their poker hand. After the final stop at the Man O’War bar and restaurant in north county Dublin, the best hand of cards won a top prize of a €200 voucher from Kennedy’s motorcycles. The lucky winner on the day was Roberta Kudrev-

FRESH calls have been made for legalised safe injecting centres in Dublin after the discovery of discarded syringes and drug paraphernalia in a Northside estate.

The syringes were found in Drumalee estate, off North Circu-lar Road, by local residents who contacted local Dublin City coun-cillor Janice Boylan (SF).

Cllr Boylan says it’s not the first time she’s been notified about the issue.

“I was shocked to be sent a picture illustrating this problem,” she said.

“Every second day I am con-tacted by residents reporting dis-carded drug paraphernalia in our neighbourhoods, in streets where our children play and try have a normal childhood.”

Cllr Boylan contacted council officials who responded quickly to remove the dangerous needles.

“I cannot begin to stress the level of anger from residents that drug users would discard such harmful and life threatening ob-jects where children play,” she said.

“I have always supported the use of safe injection centres and they have proven themselves to work in places like Australia.

“These centres will help to sig-nificantly reduce the amount of drug paraphernalia discarded on our streets and neighbourhoods.

“They will also help by educat-ing drug users to discard their needles safely.”

Meanwhile, statistics obtained by Dublin Bay North TD Tommy Broughan (Ind) show almost two thirds of Irish addicts on metha-done programmes are from Dub-lin, Kildare and West Wicklow.

According to the figures provid-ed by the HSE, these areas equate to 64 per cent of the total num-ber of 9,866. In the Dublin North, North Central and North West ar-eas there are 3,353 addicts on of-

ficial methadone programmes. The latest annual figures from

the National Drug-Related Deaths Index indicate that there were 633 drug related deaths in 2012.

A total of 350 of these deaths were due to the toxic effects of drugs. Methadone was implicated in 86 poisonings in 2012 and the majority of the deaths (87 per cent) where methadone was impli-cated were polydrug poisonings.

Deputy Broughan said: “Hope-fully with the recent appointment of a Minister of State with respon-sibility for drugs we will start to see a difference in our worsening drugs crisis.

“Projects such as Ana Liffey Drug Project and Merchants Quay Ireland have long been calling for action on the issue and we can see from these figures that our depen-dence on methadone as a means of treating addiction is growing.

“We need real alternatives, appropriate supports and timely access to detox rehabilitation cen-tres.”

Antenatal clinic celebrates first birthday

Sinéad Heaney, Community Midwife Manager with the Rotun-da Hospital, said there were huge benefits for women who opt to at-tend the community clinics.

“It offers women great continu-ity of care,” said Ms Heaney.

“In a clinic like the Belle An-tenatal Clinic, women will gener-ally see the same midwife for all of their antenatal visits and will be able to build a relationship and rapport with their midwife that just wouldn’t be possible in a busy hospital outpatients’ de-partment.”

Ms Heaney said the facilities in Darndale were purposely built for its work.

“It is a lovely fresh, new and comfortable environment for women to have their antenatal appointments in,” she added.

Louise Byrne, from Don-aghmede, attended the clinic in 2014 and returned with her now five-month-old daughter Jessica for the first birthday celebration.

A SERVICE that provides preg-nant women with an opportu-nity to have their antenatal ap-pointments in a local setting as an alternative to travelling to the Rotunda Hospital celebrat-ed its first birthday last week.

Over the past year, the Belle Antenatal Clinic, located in the Darndale-Belcamp Village Centre, has given pregnant women from Dublin 5, 13 and 17 the opportu-nity to have their antenatal ap-pointments in a relaxed setting.

Since it officially opened in June 2014, over 100 women have used the free service, but there is capacity for many more women to attend this clinic.

Midwives are urging more women from north east Dublin to avail of the service.

Community midwife-led clinics are offered by the Rotunda Hos-pital to women who are consid-ered low-risk and have relatively straightforward pregnancies.

Women still attend the Ro-tunda Hospital for their booking visit at 14-weeks and scans at 20-weeks. Women then attend a combination of their chosen com-munity clinic and GP for all other routine check-ups during their pregnancy.

The service was brought to the Dublin 17 area through a partner-ship between the Rotunda Hospi-tal, HSE and Preparing for Life.

Preparing for Life is an area based prevention and early in-tervention programme funded by the Atlantic Philanthropies and the Department of Children and Youth Affairs under the Area Based Childhood Programme.

Through the programme, preg-nant women from selected parts of Dublin 5 and 17 are also being offered a range of other com-plementary services including antenatal classes in community settings, baby massage courses, mother and baby groups and a home visiting programme.

Pictured at the first birthday celebrations were (from l-r): Louise Byrne and her daughter Jessica, Sinead Harney, Public Health Nurse and Sinead Heaney, Community Midwife Manager, Rotunda Hospital.

“I didn’t actually realise before I was offered this clinic in the Ro-tunda that this health centre ex-isted,” said Ms Byrne.

“I went to the Belle Clinic and my GP for all of my visits after my booking visit in the Rotunda and had a great experience.

“It was really convenient for me. I also felt that I got more time

with the midwife who really lis-tened if I had any issues.

“I remember one day I had a complication and had to go into the Rotunda for a scan. The mid-wife Debbie called me the next day to see how I had gotten on which I don’t think would hap-pen if I wasn’t attending the clinic here.”

Ms Byrne added: “Attending this clinic also helped me to con-nect with other services in the community like baby massage classes and the Bosom Buddies mother and infant group.”

Deputy Flanagan said he has an interesting perspective on how politics works having been in opposition and in Government as part of the Fine Gael Party, an Independent and now a member of Renua Ireland.

“I am confident that Renua Ire-land, as a smaller political party, is better placed to focus on and develop policies that will posi-tively impact on people’s lives, including my own constituents in Dublin Bay North,” he added.

“The General Election is fast approaching and I look for-ward to continuing to meet with my constituents to dis-cuss any concerns that they may have and to discuss Renua Ireland’s position with them.”

Deputy Flanagan, a former member of Fine Gael, said he was delighted to be running for the new party headed by Lucinda Creighton.

“I have represented the resi-dents of Dublin North East, now Dublin Bay North, at local and national level for the past eight years,” he said.

“I am very excited to be a mem-ber of Renua Ireland and in a po-sition to offer my constituents a real change in Irish politics.

“We passionately believe that our policies will improve the quality of each citizen’s life. We can build a better society and re-

Fundraiser for Ataxia is a big successA CHARITY event, which was held to raise funds for research into a debilitating illness, has proved to be a big success.

Over 250 people took part in ‘Walk for Ataxia’, from Clontarf Rugby Club to Belvedere Rugby Club.

The participants walked through the streets from the Northside to the Southside club where a BBQ was waiting for them to celebrate their achieve-ment.

Leading the pack was organ-iser Kevin Finn, whose brother Peter suffers from Friedreich’s Ataxia.

Speaking after the event, Kevin said the support and dedication from everybody involved was overwhelming. “This debilitating disease is still relatively unknown in Ireland,” he said.

“We hope that our efforts will raise the profile of Friedreich’s Ataxia, and show people who may be suffering with this terrible dis-ease that there is hope, and that people do care about their health and livelihood.”

Friedreich’s Ataxia (FA) is a neuromuscular disease that causes progressive damage to the nervous system resulting in the loss of muscle control.

Kevin described Freidreich’s Ataxia as a terrible condition.

“What is happening to my brother isn’t fair,” he stated.

“To date there is no treatment and no cure.

“Researchers working on Friedreich’s Ataxia aim to have a cure by 2020. That was the over-riding reason behind ‘Walk for Ataxia’.

“We intend to raise money for research to help this dream be-come a reality.”

Kevin said that Peter gradu-ated from Trinity College in 2006 with an honours degree in Law. “Unfortunately, due to the toll

the condition took on my broth-er’s health, he was unable to join the workforce with his classmates following their graduation,” he added. The event on June 20 raised €30,000 and the profile of Ataxia Ireland was enhanced further by the hashtag #walkfo-rataxia trending on Twitter. Both Leinster Rugby and Ireland rubgy star Cian Healy, from Clontarf, tweeted their support.

Slow West trots to success

ing his un-likely and vu lnerab le sidekick as the odd cou-ple navigate their way t h r o u g h danger.

T h e y meet lots of inter-esting and co lour fu l characters along the way that appear to symbolise American c u l t u r e and folklore as much as add to the movie’s storyline and dramatic thrust.

‘Slow West’ is slow but reward-ing, littered with moments of great tension, great acting and a great visual cinematic directing.

This is a thought provoking magical western that will leave you satisfied and at the same time wanting more. We score it 4 out of 5 stars.

Paul O’Rourke

Much like the Hollywood musi-cal of old, westerns have become a dying breed, despite annual at-tempts by diehard fans to revive the genre with such recent films as ‘True Grit’, ‘Django Unchained’ and Tarrantino’s upcoming ‘The Hateful Eight’.

‘Slow West’ is an interesting addition to that list especially when you consider it only lasts 84 minutes, is written by previ-ously unknown first time writer/director John Maclean and stars an Irishman and an Australian in the lead roles.

The film tells the story of a 16-year-old Scottish boy, Jay Caven-dish (played by Australian, Kodi Smit-McPhee) who, at the end of the 19th century, journeys across the American frontier in search of the woman he loves.

He is joined by Silas (Michael

Fassbender), a mysterious trav-eller and outlaw who is willing to serve as his guide.

Little do they know that dark forces are also desperate to find the same woman, for their own very different reasons.

You may remember Kodi Smit-McPhee as the son of Vigo Mortenson in the post-apocalyp-tic movie, ‘The Road’, and ‘Slow West’ is definitely another road movie, albeit very different from the aforementioned.

You would normally expect a film of this short duration to zip along, but in fact it meanders at a leisurely pace that at no time feels uncomfortable.

Fassbender is fantastic as a cool and tough cowboy, presum-ably a role he has always wanted to play.

Smit-McPhee is perfect play-

I WAS never a big fan of westerns, always finding them a little too predictable and lacking in invention for my taste.

Port money sails into Government’s coffersMONEY is sailing into the Gov-ernment’s coffers. Dublin Port Company last week announced that it will pay a dividend of €8.8 million to the State for the 2014 financial year.

The payment represents 30

per cent of the port’s distribut-able profits for 2014. Since 2007 Dublin Port Company has paid the Government a total of €78.6 million in dividends.

The dividend payment follows a successful year in 2014 for Dub-lin Port where cargo volumes increased 7.0 per cent year-on-year.

Total throughput for the year was 31 million gross tonnes with 7,108 ship arrivals, bringing the port’s activity back to the record levels of 2007.

Figures for the first trading quarter of 2015 have shown con-tinued growth in import and ex-port trade with cargo volumes up 5.3 per cent on the same period last year.

This is the strongest first quar-ter Dublin Port has had in a dec-ade and surpasses the previous record year of 2007 by 3.0 per cent.

Minister for Transport, Tour-ism and Sport Paschal Donohoe said he was delighted that the port has once again achieved its agreed target.

“I would like to thank the board, management and employ-ees of this strategically impor-tant State asset for their contin-ued work and contribution,” said Minister Donohoe.

Stephanie Regan, one of Fine Gael’s three candidates to con-test the constituency of Dublin Bay North, said that as strong campaigner for community based positive health programmes for all ages, she sees this as a step in the right direction.

“As a provider myself of well-being programmes in the work-place, I am keenly aware of the positive effects that can be gained for the individual themselves, for the employer and ultimately re-sulting in better levels of health in our general population,” said Ms Regan.

“The Irish health service spends billions each year on pro-

moting, protecting and restoring people’s health and wellbeing.

“All of this funding is essential but we could target it so much more effectively by keeping peo-ple healthy, happy and out of hospital.”

Ms Regan believes workplace health programmes are one of the best ways to prevent lifestyle diseases and improve mental health.

Long Term Illness SchemeQuestion:What is the long-term Illness Scheme?

Answer:People suffering from certain condi-

tions can get free drugs, medicines and medical and surgical appliances for the treatment of that condition. These are provided under the Long Term Illness Scheme which is administered by the Health Service Executive (HSE) under Section 59 of the Health Act 1970.

The Long Term Illness Scheme does not depend on your income or other circumstances. You may also be eligible for a medical card or GP visit card, depending on your circumstances.

The medical conditions that qualify under the Long Term Illness Scheme are: •Mental handicap •Mental illness (for people under 16 only) •Diabetes insipidus •Diabetes mellitus •Haemo-philia •Cerebral palsy •Phenylketonuria •Epilepsy •Cystic fibrosis •Multiple scle-rosis •Spina bifida •Muscular dystro-phies •Hydrocephalus •Parkinsonism •Acute leukaemia •Conditions arising from use of Thalidomide

If you qualify, you will get a long-term illness book. This book lists the

drugs and medicines for the treat-ment of your condition, which will be provided to you free of charge through your pharmacist.

You do not have to pay a prescrip-tion charge for drugs covered by your long-term illness book. Other drugs and medicines not related to the speci-fied condition must be paid for in the normal way. If your doctor or occupa-tional therapist prescribes a medical or surgical appliance, it will be supplied to you from your local health office.

Non-medical cardholders, non-GP visit cardholders and conditions not covered under Long Term Illness

If you have neither a medical card, nor a GP visit card nor a medical condition listed above, you can use the Drugs Payment Scheme to limit your expenses on prescription drugs.

gP Visit Card for the under sixesQuestion:Will my child be eligible for the new free GP Visit Card for Under sixes?

Answer:From July 1 2015, children under the

age of six are entitled to free visits to a GP who is taking part in the scheme.

Children can be registered from June 15, 2015, to get a GP visit card for chil-dren under six.

In addition to free GP visits, the card covers specific assessments at age two and five and care for children with asth-ma.

These assessments are preventive checks that include charting age, weight and height and taking appropriate fol-low-up action.

The asthma checks assess your child’s asthma and involve a review of medica-tions, including ensuring that your child is using inhalers correctly.

A written plan will be given to you to help you manage your child’s asthma.

The initial check takes place when asthma is diagnosed in a child over two-years-of-age, followed by another check in the following three months and then annually until the child reaches the age of six.

All children under six who live in Ire-land or who intend to live in Ireland for at least one year are eligible.

Your child will be included in this scheme until the end of the month of

your child’s sixth birthday. The date the card is valid until is shown on the card. You will be notified approximately three months before it is due to expire.

If your child’s sixth birthday occurs in July 2015, you can register your child and he/she will be eligible until the end of that month.

The card covers free GP visits, includ-ing home visits and out-of-hours’ urgent GP care.

From July 1, children under the age of six are entitled to free visits to a GP who is taking part in the scheme. ▪

Hands up who has had a putting lesson?

by Frank Long

THIS was the opening question in the afternoon from our instructor, Conor, on our one day clinic in the Dave Pelz Short Game School of Golf, based in the wonderful surrounds of Killeen Castle near Dunsany in County Meath.

I had been lucky enough to play the Jack Nicklaus signature course in Killeen Castle on a number of occasions and I would rank it in my top 10 courses in Ireland. I had promised myself each time that I would put myself down for the Dave Pelz clinic but had never got around to it until now.

The day starts at 9am with an introduction to the Dave Pelz ap-proach to the short game. It is all about understanding the impor-tance of the short game (defined as anywhere within 100 yards of the green) and learning techniques to improve your chipping, pitch-ing, bunker shots and putting. As Conor outlined the timetable for the day, the sunshine was flowing in through the large windows of the training centre which revealed a wonderful practice area of pris-tine greens, beautifully prepared bunkers and a range with target nets and pyramids of golf balls all begging to be hit.

Numbers are restricted to a maximum of six participants to ensure that each person gets plenty of attention from the in-structor. Soon we were out beside the green being walked through the mechanics of the chip shot and how to use different clubs to get the low trajectory, controlled

shot that allows you to get a ball from just off the green to travel the appropriate distance and end up close to the target. Then it was our turn and initially we made hard work of it for the poor green keeper whose responsibility it was to retrieve the mishits. But gradu-ally more and more of the balls ended up close to the target area and he had less walking to do.

Then it was over to the range to learn the technique required to hit a 20 yard pitch shot and con-sistently land it close to the pin. Conor was very good at assessing each participant’s strengths and weaknesses and then pointing out the changes needed to im-prove the results. A little competi-tion started to see who could get five in a row into the nets which helped with the concentration. One lesson I took from the day was that practice can be fun but to properly assess your progress you really need to be practicing with someone who can watch your ac-tions and give feedback as you go.

Next it was into the bunkers and with sand flying we spent an hour honing the technique required to

successfully get the ball out of the trap close to the flag. Again some good training aids and new concepts for us ensured that we all made progress on this shot in a short timeframe.

After a fine lunch in the main clubhouse (included in the price) we returned refreshed and ready for further instruction but at the same time wondering how could we spend three hours just put-ting. How wrong we were – the time flew past and it was probably the best part of the day. Just be-ing reminded that 40 per cent of all shots played in a round of golf are putts and seeing that none of us had ever had a putting les-son was enough to convince us that what we were about to learn would have the biggest impact on our game.

Conor began by observing us hitting about 30 putts from various distances and then we re-turned indoors for a theory, setup and mechanics session. This was followed by exercises to improve our ability to consistently hit a ball in a dead straight line for three feet, which is a lot harder than it sounds. Back outside we worked on distance control from 30 feet, both up and down hill, and finally used a very clever device to test and improve the mechanics of our putting strokes.

After a final wrap up session we proceeded on our separate ways. Each of us had taken a lot from the day and it was up to us now to put it into practice and indeed to practice what we had learned outside of competitive golf. Some-thing all amateur golfers need to do more of.

Numbers are restricted to a maximum

of six participants to ensure that each person gets plenty of attention from the instructor.

Celeb Spy Xtrawith Rebecca Lee

Rumours that Chris Martin and Kylie Minogue are dating are flying around. It’s all after the pair were spotted taking a stroll together through London.

It follows her gig at Hyde Park earlier this month. The pair were seen walking arm in arm, sparking rumours of a

romance.

I’m not sure whether music fans will want to hear this but Hilary Duff is back on the music scene with her first new album in eight years, ‘Breathe In. Breathe Out’.

As a single mother to three-year-old son, Luca, she says her album is very personal.

Let’s just hope it’s better than the last one!

Uber cool new Pixar animation, ‘Inside Out’, has had its UK premiere at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.

The movie follows young Riley as she’s uprooted from her Midwest life and moved to San Francisco.

We get a glimpse of her emotions, which are represented as characters inside her mind.

Amy Poehler voices the emotion ‘Joy’. No better woman.

Paloma Faith may replace Rita Ora on ‘The Voice UK’ judg-ing panel. She was first offered the job in 2012 but turned it down. Rita left the show to join the ‘X Factor’ judging panel following a massive deal with music guru Simon Cowell.

Bookies say Paloma is favourite to bag the job.

That’s it from me. Until next week

And last but not least, Seth MacFarlane thinks the Ted sequel is going to be even better than the first movie.

He returns with Mark Wahlberg for ‘Ted 2’, which follows on from the 2012 original. Seth, who both created the idea and voic-es Ted, says it’s going to be a good one.

Let’s hope it is or he can get stuffed!

2. Most Memorable moment in Dublin?

I went to see the metal band Tool in the Point in 2006. I got in a fist fight with my brother and this other guy over a signed drum skin that the drummer threw out into the crowd during the last song. My brother now has one half of said skin framed on his wall. I think the other guy was arrested with the other half still in his hands.

3. Most ‘want to forget’ mo-ment in Dublin?

See above.4. First album you bought

and last album you bought? The first was ‘Travelling With-

out Moving’ by Jamiroquai (on tape) and last was the new Catfish and the Bottlemen album

5. When you’re not playing music, what else do you do?

I run a travel company called Global Village Tours. We send peo-ple to North Korea and beyond. And everyone in the band is into sport. I’m a boxer and Barry and Darragh were professional ath-letes before they were old (rugby and athletics).

6. Who are your influences?Phillip Henry is the reason I

took up dobro and harmonica, and he also got me into Indian music. I love the complexity and aggression of metal music. Can’t wait for Little Green Cars’ new album.

7. If you weren’t playing with your fellow band mates, who would make up your ideal band?

The B Sharps with Marty Moris-sey as the soprano.

8. Any tips on life?Question absolutely every-

thing.9. First person you’d invite to

your party?Genghis Khan.10. Last person you’d invite

to your party?Kanye West. .

Skerries locals thanked for great Rás supportTHE people of Skerries have been thanked for their contribution to the success of the 2015 An Post Rás.

Race organiser Tony Campbell was delighted with the fantastic support that the riders received along the route and in Skerries for the race’s eight and final stage.

“The support that the race receives every year in Skerries is nothing short of spectacular,” said Mr Campbell.

“As soon as the riders enter the town, there are always hordes of people cheering them on, which gives them a big lift when energy levels are low after eight days in the saddle.

“It was the 10th anniversary of the stage finish in Skerries and there is a reason as to why we keep coming back year after year – the support.

“I’d like to extend a huge thank you to the Skerries locals, volun-teers and all the organisers for doing such a wonderful job to

make this year’s Rás, one of the most memorable yet.”

After eight gruelling stages around Ireland, An Post rider, Aidis Kroupis, managed to clinch the final stage win with an elec-trifying sprint to the line ahead of Davide Vigano (Team IDEA) and county rider, Damian Shaw (Louth Team Asea). However, it was Lukas Postlberger (Tirol Cycling) who was crowned Rás champion having worn the Yellow jersey since the second stage.

He showed great grit and guile to recover from a bad crash the previous day and managed to see out the race to take home the trophy.

“It was really amazing to take the Rás trophy,” said the Aus-trian. “People speak of the race and how tough it is, but you have to experience it yourself to really understand.”

He absolutely loves being engaged with the Dogs Trust training team and enjoys human com-pany and play in a nice quiet adult home where he receives all of the canine attention.

He’s a great eater and loves nothing more than a nice clean and tidy living environment to chill out in. One look into this gorgeous boy’s sparkling eyes and you’ll be smitten.

These may seem quite expensive but due to the high nutritional content, you feed your dog a lot less than you would think and so it lasts longer. There is also the benefit that it doesn’t spoil soon after opening and if the correct kibble size is chosen, it helps to maintain your dog’s

dental health too!Your local pet shop will

also stock a selection of dried food, and they will be happy to advise you of what product will best suit your dog.

DO YOU know how important water is to your dog? They can lose all of their body fat and half of their protein supplies and still survive, but a dog losing even 10 per cent of its water can be fatal.

Always make sure your dog has access to plenty of fresh, clean water, especially during the summer months when they’ll be perspiring more than usual.

When it comes to feeding dogs, it’s crucial that their food has a high level of digestible protein. Most complete dog foods will have high levels of protein, but you can supplement this with things like raw or slightly cooked red or white meat, fish and cooked eggs.

Fats, carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins are the other necessary components of your dog’s food.

So we know that our dogs need these things, but how do you choose a food, and how do you know how much to feed them?

Well, it’s always good to have a chat with your vet about these things because different factors will affect how these questions are answered.

You should ideally feed your dog the best quality food you can afford, and how much you give your dog daily will depend on their breed, age, size, any current medical conditions and how much exercise they get.

Obviously a larger breed dog that gets walked for a couple of hours a day is going to need more food to meet its energy requirements than a smaller breed that walks for a half hour, twice a day.

The two most popular types of food for dogs are wet food (canned) or dried food (kibble). Dried food really is the better option for your dog.

Wet food is convenient as it’s sold more readily at supermarkets and convenience shops, but they are often very high in fat and have poor quality protein.

Your local veterinary practice will usually sell high quality dried food which will be completely

Businesses helping local people to eat healthy foodBUSINESSES in the Killiney area are playing their part, along with the local Slimming World group, in promoting healthy eating lo-cally.

Since opening her class at St Al-phonsus and Columba Church Hall in Killiney five months ago, Caitri-ona Lynch’s Slimming World group have enjoyed astonishing success.

Local businesses are now sup-porting the group’s aims with healthy eating a priority.

Elaine Kinsella, owner of Café Solo, is herself a member and has lost over one and half stone.

“We now prepare our food in the restaurant using the healthy fat-free methods I learned in group,” she says.

“We remove all visible fat and bake or grill. We also use the ‘fry

lite’ products. Fellow members of-ten drop in for a coffee, chat and healthy snack.”

Deerings Butchers also play their part in ensuring that delicious 98 per cent fat-free mince is avail-able, as well as chicken, and turkey products which keeps everyone on track when cooking delicious Slim-ming World recipies.

Manager of Super Valu Killiney, Justin Gill, asked for a list of all the items his Slimming World custom-ers would need and they can now be found in the store.

Looks like Killiney has raised the healthy eating bar.

Minister launches positive mental health campaignA CAMPAIGN designed by young people to promote positive men-tal health, was launched in Dublin last week. The ‘Let’s Go Mental’ campaign will involve 31 separate events in every local authority area around the country, using music, sport, the arts and other activities to stress the value of positive mental health.

Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Dr James Reilly, launched ‘Let’s Go Mental’ at two events in Dublin: one outside Leinster House involving a double decker bus and later at a press conference at the Science Gallery, Pearse Street.

The launch was kicked off by mu-sic from rock band HamsandwicH on the ‘Let’s Go Mental’ community bus. Also on the bus was Annalise Murphy, the Irish Olympic sailor who, like HamsandwicH, is an am-bassador for the campaign.

The bus arrived at the TCD Sci-ence Gallery for the official launch of the campaign. Actor Brian Glee-son is the third celebrity ambas-sador.

Minister Reilly said he was de-lighted to launch and support ‘Let’s Go Mental’.

“I am particularly impressed that its focus is on positivity and on giving young people the tools to use in their everyday lives to manage their own mental health.,” he stated. “I would like to thank all three ambassadors - Annalise

FIFTH class students from St Patrick’s NS, Glencullen, and sixth class pupils from Balbriggan Education Together National School have received na-tional recognition for their excellent projects.

The projects were entered into the Our World Irish Aid Awards and explored is-sues facing children in the developing world.

The St Patrick’s students’ project was ‘Caring For Our World’ and the Balbrig-

gan Education Together students work was entitled ‘Irish Aid and the MDGs’.

The projects were exhibited in Dublin Castle on June 16 during the awards cer-emony and the inaugural prize of the Our World Irish Aid Award of Distinction was presented to the St Patrick’s students and their teacher, Kathleen Byrne, by Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Charlie Flanagan.

Now in its 10th year, the Our World Irish Aid Awards are designed to help children in Ireland understand global

issues, and Ireland’s role in working to meet the United Nations’ Millennium De-velopment Goals (MDGs).

These goals focus on fighting hunger and poverty and improving the lives of those in the world’s poorest countries.

Speaking at the national final, Minis-ter Flanagan said: “The Our World Irish Aid Awards give pupils from all over Ire-land a great opportunity to gain insight into the lives of children in the develop-ing world and convey their understand-ing through projects which are both crea-

tive and educational.“Great progress has been made in

meeting the eight Millennium Develop-ment goals since they were agreed in 2000. Working with our partners in de-veloping countries and at the UN and EU, Ireland has contributed to this progress, which has included halving the number of people living in poverty, reducing mal-nutrition and dramatically increasing the number of children at school.

“While we must redouble our efforts in the years ahead, we can all be proud of

mounted airbag, protective air-bumps and chest-like dashboard cubby box show that the firm’s engineers are keen to innovate. Keen pricing, frugal engines and some of the most comfortable seats in the business mark this C4 Cactus out as one of the most distinctive newcomers of the year.”

Robertson added : “I am really proud to be able to announce that the Citroën C4 Cactus wins the title of DieselCar Magazine’s Car of the Year 2015. It’s the perfect car for the times. It’s af-fordable, practical and incred-ibly comfortable, all wrapped up with a striking design that can be highly personalised.”

In addition, the highly ac-claimed Citroën Grand C4 Pi-casso was named as DieselCar Magazine’s ‘Best MPV’ for the second year running. The judges praised its combination of style, comfort and affordability, add-ing that “there’s a lengthy list of hi-tech equipment and safety functions to keep even the most ardent gadget geek happy”.

Alongside the three wins for the New C4 Cactus and the Grand C4 Picasso, the DieselCar Magazine Car of the Year Awards judges also highly commended C3 Picasso in the ‘Compact MPV’ category.

The newly independent DS brand was also highly com-mended for DS 3 in the ‘Premium Small Car’ category.

THE new C4 Cactus has been named as DieselCar Maga-zine’s ‘Car of the Year’ 2015.

The award recognises the many bold and distinctive at-tributes of the Citroën brand’s latest model, which won the overall prize as well as being named as this year’s ‘Best Cross-over’.

The latest-generation Citroën Grand C4 Picasso retained the ‘Best MPV’ title, having won it for the first time last year.

The Citroën C4 Cactus has add-ed two top DieselCar Magazine honours to its impressive list of industry awards received since its launch in September last year. Previous honours include ‘Small Hatchback of the Year’ in the UK Car of the Year Awards and the highly sought-after title of BBC TopGear Magazine ‘Hatchback of the Year’.

Ian Robertson, editor and publisher of DieselCar Magazine,

commented that the New C4 Cactus represents “Citroën doing what it does best – a funky, ur-ban-friendly vehicle that is tak-ing the sector by storm”, adding that “clever touches like the roof

Courtesy bikes for Škoda driversWITH summer now well under-way, Škoda is offering a courte-sy bike scheme to all customers leaving their car in for a service at the Škoda MSL Service Cen-tre on the North Circular Road.

Given the central location of the Škoda Service Centre in Dub-lin 7, the scheme will be particu-larly convenient for customers wishing to leave their car in for a service before work, while it will also appeal to customers who wish to take a cycle around the nearby Phoenix Park.

Speaking about the new scheme, After Sales Manager at Škoda MSL Service Centre, Mar-tyn Knight, said: “Cycling has be-come hugely popular in Ireland over the past few years and with the summer stretched out in front of us, we saw an opportunity to take advantage of the popularity of cycling, while also making our customers’ lives a little easier.

“Škoda has a very proud as-sociation with cycling in Ireland and the 2015 Škoda Cycle Series is now well underway, with five more cycling events set to take

place around the country over the coming months.

“We are delighted to be further developing that association and hope that lots of our customers will avail of this new service at our Service Centre on the North Circular Road.”

The courtesy bikes at Škoda MSL Service Centre are avail-able to all customers and can be reserved at the booking stage, along with various other alterna-tive transport options, including replacement cars, leap cards for bus users and taxis.

How much are you paying for your car loan?

positioned to deliver real value for Irish motorists. It is impor-tant that consumers are aware of what their car finance is costing them so that they can make the best purchasing decisions.”

Volkswagen will be offering customers more for their money on 152 orders with a range of additional extras, including free styling and technology packs and competitive finance offers includ-ing PCP from 1.9 per cent from Volkswagen Bank. Most models will also offer a lower APR when you opt for a higher grade mod-el.

For the 152 plate, Volkswagen is reintroducing what has been a hugely popular offer of a lower APR to consumers who opt for one of their higher specification models.

The research was commis-sioned by Ireland’s most popu-lar car marque, Volkswagen, who questioned consumers on how they feel about motoring finance.

Looking at the demographics of who is borrowing to finance their motoring needs, 25–44-year-olds are most likely to have a car loan (20 per cent) com-pared to a national average of 17 per cent and just 12 per cent of 18–24-year-olds.

While car financing is most common between 25 and 54-year-olds, once motorists reach 55 years of age, borrowing to fi-nance a car drops to just 15 per

cent. Most car loans (51 per cent) are for values of between €7,000 and €17,000. Just eight per cent of consumers borrow more than €20,000.

Volkswagen Group Ireland CEO, Lars Himmer, said: “As the leading car brand in Ireland we understand how consumers feel about motoring and we have put in place innovative finance solu-tions so that Irish consumers can get more car for their money.

“Competitive options, such as PCP from Volkswagen Bank, have kept the Irish motor industry alive through difficult times and now that the economy, and the market, is recovering we are well

MORE than a quarter (27 per cent) of consumers in Ireland who have a car loan have no idea what interest rate they are paying on their motoring finance, according to research released recently.

Cost effective special effectsWANT to add some special effects to your home?

No, we’re not talking about installing strobe lighting to your living room or adding a musical flush tone to the lavatory.

How about if we told you all you

need is a sponge, some old rags and a tin of paint to add some special effects to a mundane decorating job.

Decorating paint techniques are popular but you don’t need to

be a master tradesman to use the basics in your own home.

If you’re considering a painting job here’s some basic special effect techniques that can brighten up the job. Experiment and have fun - after all, you can always paint over it again if you don’t like the end result.

COLOUR WASHINGColour washing is a versatile

technique worth mastering because it can be painted onto bare wood, furniture and walls. The effect is achieved by brushing on the glaze (translucent top coat). Once the glaze is applied, using a cloth gently moving in a criss-cross motion to produce an even paint effect.

To begin, give the walls two coats of the base colour.

For the glaze, mix two parts paint with one part water and give the paint a good stir.

Always start at the top of the

wall and work down. Using a wide brush, apply the paint to the wall in a wide criss-cross movement. Work on about four square feet at a time.

Work your way around the room. By the time you have

covered each wall, the first wall should be dry.

WOODWASHINGThis is similar to colour washing

and is ideal for wood. Use an oil-based paint for this technique and mix the glaze with two parts of paint and one part white spirit. A tablespoon of linseed oil will give you longer drying time.

Prepare the surface making sure it is clean, sound and dry. On untreated bare or stripped wood apply your woodwash using the following steps.

Give the paint a good stir before you start. Brush on the base coat and immediately wipe off with a lint-free cloth. When dry, repeat with a second coat.

The paint will enhance the grain of the wood and give subtle colours.

Woodwash can also be used as a decorative effect over existing satinwood, gloss or eggshell paint.

Over these surfaces, lightly sand along the grain of the wood and dust off. This provides adhesion for the woodwash. Apply by brush and use a graining tool or dragging brush to achieve grain effect. Wine corks can be used to create knots.

SPONGING Sponging is simplicity itself but

gives a very professional effect. All you need is a sea sponge, a tin of emulsion and a couple of hours. You can sponge on furniture, walls and woodwork.

Apply a base colour and let it dry. It is best to use vinyl soft sheen or silk emulsion.

Dip your sponge into the glazer you are using as a top coat. Use a sea sponge rather than a synthetic one. It is important not to overload the sponge with paint as this can spoil the dappled texture.

Remove any excess by dabbing the sponge on paper. This way

you can also decide how strong an effect you wish to create: the greater the pressure on the sponge, the more clear the mark.

Concentrate on the whole wall rather than segments. Dab the sponge randomly over the surface and keep a steady pressure.

Step back from the surface regularly to survey the whole wall and check for areas you have missed or which need more sponging. Wipe stray paint from the skirting or woodwork with a soft damp rag.

Rinse the sponge regularly so it doesn’t clog up and the textured effect is kept consistent.

If you do go wrong, wipe the paint off immediately with a damp cloth and start again. Don’t wait until the top coat is dry.

RAGGING Don’t lose the rag on a painting

job. An old piece of cloth can be as useful to the home decorator as expensive brushes.

Rags are used to rub colour into the grain of wood, to mottle

backgrounds and to create pattern when rag rolling walls. The effect is created in the same way as sponging except that rags are used instead of sponges.

The result gives a bolder, more swirling design than the effect created using a sponge.

Work on one wall at a time. Apply the base coat using vinyl soft sheen or silk emulsion. If the surface you are ragging is wooden the best paint to use as a basecoat is satinwood or gloss.

Scrunch a rag up in your hand

and loosely bunch it. While the glaze is still wet roll the bunched ragging cloth rapidly across the surface in a roughly random or ‘S’ shape.

To ensure your ragging effect remains uniform, replace the rag when it becomes clogged up. Dispose of rags carefully because they are highly flammable.

Experiment with rags of cheesecloth, chamois leather or plain cotton as each creates its own unique effect. Make sure the cloth is lint free.

Top tips for window privacyJulia Gray

YOUR home is a sanctuary from the outside world, so you cer-tainly don’t want the outside world looking in. But how do you get the balance between privacy, letting the light in and allowing the family to see what’s going on in the neigh-bourhood.

If you want something less fussy than net curtains - and these days most of us do - how about frosted window film? This

film is sticky on one side and gives a smart, contemporary fin-ish both inside and out.

Frosted film works well on sash windows when confined to the lower window, but if you don’t have sashes, you can just frost the lower part of the glass, leav-ing some unobscured.

Another option is having a de-sign, such as rows of cut-out cir-cles or squares, incorporated into the film, which makes it more interesting and allows you to see out (and people outside to see in) just a little.

However, patterned film is more expensive and harder to fit.

Blinds are another popular and obvious solution to privacy prob-lems. Although quite costly, bot-tom-up blinds are the best ones to use.

These are roller blinds that go up from the window sill, rather than down from the top of the window, so you can cover as much of the glass as you want.

Go for a sheer fabric and you’ll be able to see out, but not the other way round (unless the light’s on).

PA Photo/thinkstockphotos▪

Some people like Venetian blinds because they give privacy during the day (providing the slats are angled the right way) and at night (providing the slats are closed).

That said, plantation shutters, which are similar but look more elegant and up-to-date, have be-come more popular than Vene-tians in recent years.

Plantation shutters are fitted to the window and this means they block out more light than blinds when the slats are closed (providing the shutters cover the whole window).

Grow it Yourself: tips for the garden

Want a butternut squash in May? Your local supermarket probably has one for sale, though it was most probably grown in Ghana and spent weeks in the back of a container lorry.

For all its technological wizard-ry, there is a terrifying blandness about the modern food chain, with its continuous, year-round supply of mediocre, uniform produce.

The veggie patch, on the other hand, is a place where thankfully, the seasons still hold sway in all their riotous glory. Seasonality is not without its frustrations of course (it involves a lot of waiting for one thing – particularly this year), but at least it brings diver-sity and variety in its wake.

Vegetables were never designed to be available all year round - the wax and wane of the seasons is part of their nature. And of course, nature knows best when it comes to deciding which foods we should

eat at particular times of the year – the starchy root crops to warm the soul in winter, and the water-filled luscious fruit to quench and nourish us in the summer.

Eating seasonally means eat-ing nutritious, healthy food right when our bodies need it.

Summer is truly a time of plen-ty for GIYers - a time when we perhaps start to struggle to keep up with the output of the veggie patch. Though the work is hard, we can also take time to enjoy the fruits of our labour.

Savour the taste of produce that is organic, local and season-al. Celebrate its diversity

If you grew a crazy-shaped carrot or a metre-long courgette, congratulate yourself on hav-ing produced something utterly unique, which your supermarket wouldn’t even let inside the door!

THINgS TO DO THIS MONTH -

beans, tomatoes, peppers, cu-cumbers, courgette and auber-gine, marrows, beetroot, globe artichokes.

Continue to harvest new pota-toes, calabrese, cauliflower, cab-bage, spinach, carrots, turnips, shallots, garlic, radish, spring onions, salad crops, strawberries, raspberries, tayberries, currents (black, red and white), gooseber-ries, loganberries, peas, broad beans.

Ask yourself – do you really need to go to the supermarket?!

TIP OF THE WEEk – MINDINgSWEETcORN PLANTS

Nothing beats the ‘GIYjoy’ of producing a sweetcorn cob from your own garden and of course nothing beats the taste either - the sugars in the cob start to turn to starch as soon the cob is picked so the saying goes that one should run from the veggie patch to the kitchen and get it into the pot quickly!

We’re a little bit off harvest-ing cobs yet, so for the moment we are focussed on providing the plants with the best growing en-vironment.

Watering sweetcorn plants is important, particularly while plants are getting established and then later when the kernels are swelling.

Not so much watering is re-quired while plants are growing - mulch around plants to maintain moisture (or it can be planted through mypex from the start). Keep area around the base of plants weed free and earth up which will keep them steady in high winds.

Michael Kelly is a freelance journalist, author of ‘Grow, Cook, Eat’ and founder of GIY.

By Michael Kelly of Grow it Yourself (GIY) Ireland

A SUPERMARkET is a place where there are no seasons. You can buy any vegetable you want at any time of the year.

JULYAny ground that has finished

cropping must be quickly cleared away to take more vegetables. Use your produce - eat it, freeze it, process it, exchange it, give it away.

Continue to water and feed plants and practice good weed control. Earth up brassicas such as Brussels sprouts - these plants will grow tall and require a good deal of support.

Net plants to keep butterflies and the cabbage moth away.

Cut down legume plants that have finished cropping - leave the roots in the soil as they fix ni-trogen in the soil. Give pumpkins plenty of water and apply a high-potash liquid feed.

Continue successional sowings and use quick maturing varieties for autumn use - Swiss chard, let-tuce, rocket, salad onions, rad-ish, turnips, peas, French Beans (dwarf), carrots.

Sow for winter use - spring cab-bage, Hungry Gap kale, parsley, perpetual spinach, chicory and coriander. Plant strawberries now

for a good crop next June. Propa-gate rosemary, sage and mint from cuttings now.

July and August are peak months for produce – enjoy it! First crops of French and runner
