BY MEGAN GATTEY

St Andrew’s College has revealed plans for its new Memorial Cha-pel designed to replace the original building, which was demolished in 2013 following quake damage.

The design, by New Zealand In-stitute of Architects gold medal-winning architect Patrick Clifford, was finalised after the college or-ganised meetings and a survey of its

school community. They prioritised “spiritual feel”, tradition and capac-ity as the top three prerequisites for the design.

The school has chosen to incor-porate as many remnants of the original chapel as possible, which Mr Clifford said was “an interesting challenge”.

He integrated the original stone, oak doors, stained glass windows, ceremonial chairs, gargoyles, the

baptismal font, the bell, the commu-nion table and around 2000 bricks into the forward-looking design.

The chapel will be built to hold 700 people. People will be able to buy a brick for $3000 and have their name recorded on a plaque within the new chapel.

“The congregation faces toward the school, supporting the idea that the chapel is at the heart of the school,” Mr Clifford said.

Students are also able to look back [towards the street] and be mindful of their place in the community.”

Mr Clifford said that the project has been a “real pleasure” to be a part of.

“The chapel will be a fantastic new build. We’ve really missed our chapel since the February 2011 earthquake,” said the college’s gen-eral manager David Evans.

Back to school with smiles on their dials

JUMP FOR JOY: Cotswold School pupils Campbell MacPherson and Jessica Ianev, both aged 10, have been selected as head boy and head girl this year.

Pupils in the Nor’west are excited to be back with their friends and teachers for the new school year.

Last week, school returned for a number of children across the city.

Cotswold School pupils Campbell MacPherson and Jessica Ianev, both 10, have been selected as head boy and head girl this year.

On her first day back, Jessica said she was really eager to learn new things and attend her first school camp.

“I’m looking forward to introducing all the guests who visit Cotswold School and making a good first impression,” she said.

Campbell, although excited to be back

at school, said he was also sad as he would miss spending time with his family.

“I’m looking forward to going to the Young Leaders Day in April where I will have the chance to meet other young leaders from schools around Canterbury to see what they have done in their schools and to learn from their experiences,” he said.

Both pupils said they were nervous about leading assemblies at the school – a requirement of their new roles.

Jessica said she was focused on writing “really unique” assembly scripts.

Cotswold School media manager Liz Davies said the school had a busy term ahead with many events.

A FAREWELL TO OUR “AMOS”

&McMaster HeapVeterinary practice

Just prior to Christmas, we tragically lost our beautiful 11 year old Abbysinnian cat Amos. We arrived home from an awesome evening out with our staff to find him dead on our driveway. We suspected he had collided with a car, although he never leaves our section, except to keep an eye on our 12 month old cat Spartacus, who is a frequent visitor to the Canterbury University pigeon enclosure. Amos would sit at our letterbox and wait for Spartacus to cross the road safely, then Amos would chase him up our drive, basically telling him off.

On arriving home we found Spartacus stuck up our neighbours cabbage tree and Lola hiding in her kennel. They were both freaked out and very upset.

Nothing can prepare you for the sorrow and grief you feel on the loss of a treasured, valued, loved member of your family. It has been 12 years since I lost my faithful, awesome dog Tobias and 2 years since Eli our cat was put to sleep. Spartacus spent days calling and looking for Amos, lying on everything that had Amos’s smell on it. Our two teenage sons still cant talk about Amos and Isaac our 10 year old spent a lot of time very upset questioning why!

Amos was a battler. He successfully kept every cat off our section, despite his disability in having an entire hind paw amputated. We suspected as a tiny kitten he contracted Toxoplasmosis which caused hindleg paralysis, forcing me to amputate his left hind paw. This never slowed him up. Other various injuries included a severely fractured pelvis causing osteoarthritis, numerous cat fight wounds from protecting Spartacus and his territory and a near drowning.

He absolutely loved our family. He followed Steve around everywhere watching him mow lawns, hit balls on the court with the kids, cook in the kitchen and lie on Steve at night getting hours of chin scratches. He would hop onto a chariot designed for him especially and the boys would carry him into their rooms. Isaac spent hours in his basket reading or chatting to him. At night Spartacus and Amos would curl up together, after fastidiously grooming each other. Even Lola would try to get in on the fun. It would be fair to say he slept a

lot….he followed the sun around each room and the only thing that got him running was food!! Amos had a ravenous appetite, never turned food down and every food was his favourite. We loved him for that.

Where ever he is I know he’s looking after us all. A month on, it still hurts to talk about him. We look at heaps of photos and pour heaps of love into Spartacus, who even though we know he loves us, he really needs a feline companion around. Another cat to keep him in line, guard the section (as Spartacus isn’t that brave) and a play mate. Through a stroke of luck we may end up getting a relative of Amos’s, Piper. Piper is Amos’s ¾ brother and miraculously looks identical to our boy. We are excited to meet Piper and hopefully it will all work out. Will keep you posted.

February 22 will hold even more significance for St Andrew’s – it is the day that the earthquake-proof-ing for the chapel foundation work is expected to be complete.

Earthquake-proofing is vital for ensuring the building’s safety, Mr Evans said. “There will be stone col-umns under the ground to prevent lateral spread as the land for the chapel is next to the stream,” he said.

St Andrew’s has started ground improvement work for the new chapel and gymnasium, both on 12-month building plans. Concrete was laid on the gymnasium site on February 4.

The gymnasium is expected to open November 2015, and the chap-el in March 2016.

▌▌ IN BRIEFBridge repairsRepairs are under way on Fendal-ton Rd bridge, at the intersection of Fendalton Rd, Harper and Deans Aves. The footpath is also closed so pedestrians should follow the signage. Work is expected to be completed in mid-March.

Parish demolitionThe St Albans Uniting Parish, on the corner of Nancy Ave and Knowles St will be demolished this month. A final service would be held on February 22. While the new church is being built congrega-tions would be held at 131 Cran-ford St.

Youths fundedThree Burnside youths have re-ceived funding from the Fendalton-

Waimairi Community Board to attend the 2015 Junior Touch Na-tionals in Auckland next week. Cali Thompson, 14, from Christchurch Boys’ High School, Taylah Thomp-son, 17, from Rangi Ruru Girls’ High School, and Kahlia Godinet, 16, from Burnside High School, have each received $175 in funding. The total cost per person to attend the tournament is $1,375.

Valentine’s Day eventAs part of the city council’s Sum-mer of Fun events a St Valentine’s Fun Day will be held on February 14, 10am-1pm at St Mary’s Angli-can Church, Merivale. A bouncy castle, barbecue, and games will be included. The city council events are funded by the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust.

New chapel for St Andrew’s

FORWARD-LOOKING: An artist’s im-pression of the new chapel planned for St Andrew’s College.

Dust storm raises ireBy Grace CabellJohns Rd residents hope a repeat of last week’s major dust storm will not occur again soon.

They say sites being used for demolition, salvaging and con-struction are causing dust pollu-tion to travel directly onto their properties on the east side of the road in nor’west winds.

Major winds reaching 125 km/h last Wednesday heightened the is-sue, causing dust to be swept all over the area.

Shirley-Papanui Community Board deputy chairman Aaron Keown, who visited the road last

Wednesday said he could not be-lieve what he saw.

“It’s unbelievable. The dust is absolutely terrible, especially at certain sites like Frews.”

“There hadn’t even been vehi-cle movement when I went out there but it was still obvious they certainly aren’t watering,” he said.

Mr Keown he had checked with the city council road workers to see if they had been mitigating dust on the road itself.

He said it was clear they were watering down the road.

In December, Nor’West News reported Environment Canter-

bury area leader of monitoring and compliance Nathan Dough-erty said Frews was last inspect-ed on December 12 for stockpile heights where an officer had noted these were higher than al-lowed.

He requested these be lowered to 5.5m.

“This has been carried out and the officer has confirmed that Frews have complied,” said Mr Dougherty.

Last week, Frews Salvage and Environment Canterbury did not respond to inquiries from Nor’West News.

So Brenda, tell me a bit about yourself.

Well, I’m 46 and I have a whanau. My husband and I have been together for 22 years, and married for 15. We have eight children. Not all of them are ours – we have a bit of a blended whanau. My husband, Wairangi, works here at He Waka Tapu with me. He’s an alcohol and drug assessor and I am a whanau intervention assessor.

Where did you grow up and where do you live now?

I grew up in Timaru. We’ve only sort of come up here to Christchurch in the last five years. My husband wanted to complete his degree in alcohol and drug studies up here. He has finished it now and we live in Papanui.

You have more than 4500 supporters on your Ka Pai Me Facebook page. How did that start?

Well, I’ve always had a weight problem from the get-go, from when I was very young. The Facebook page happened in August last year. Things were

pretty tough for me and I was really wanting to make a change and didn’t know how. My work colleagues and I were trying to nut out something I could do. I was a bit resistant at first thinking about how it would go and how I would feel, blah de blah, but the page was set up and away I went. I post on it every day of how I’m going.

How did you feel about the support you received on the page?

In the beginning there were about five or 600 following and I was like ‘mean’. Then it started growing and growing and it got steady support building. From the time that I’ve had the page, I’ve had no negative comments.

Have you heard of other people following in your footsteps?

There are lots of people going on their own journeys. A lot of them private messaged me in the background because they didn’t want friends or whanau to know. There were maybe about 50 who have started their own journey. We all motivate each other and that sort of thing keeps me going and it’s that accountability. I really enjoy it and it’s quite therapeutic.

Can you tell me a bit about your 700-day health and fitness plan?

A 700-day journey of hardIn August, Brenda Warren, of Papanui, was 199kg. She has a goal to lose 100kg during a 700-day health and fitness plan, and will take part in The Star City2Surf with Mike Pero Real Estate event next month. Reporter Bridget Rutherford chats to her about the journey, her training and the biggest challenges she has faced.

GETTING FIT: Brenda Warren performs at the kapa haka regionals in April last year before she began her health and fitness plan.

Thank you to the people of Christchurch Central. I am delighted to be re-elected as your Member of Parliament.Be assured that regardless of your politics, I am ready and willing to work for anyone and everyone in the electorate.

Page 5: NorWest News 09-02-15

I am on day 165, it’s going really well. I see Daniel, the nutrition-ist here at He Waka Tapu, once a week and we look at food menus and exercise programmes and set goals. Then on Fridays we have the weigh-in. I do the exercise on my own.

Was it difficult to get motivated?

In the beginning I was ready. I did a 10-day count down before I started and that helped. I got to say goodbye to some of the foods that I love like Chinese, KFC, chocolate, fizzy and chocolate eclairs. Having that last pig-out and saying that’s it, no more helped me prepare myself for what I was going to do.

Had you tried anything like this before?

I’m a queen of lots of things. I’ve tried every single diet, pills and potions. I’ve tried Atkins, Sure Slim. They all work, but if you don’t have the head stuff straight it is hard. I did lose 50kg about three or four years ago but my head space was not in it. This time I’ve been able to put it out there. I was a bit shy but now I don’t care. There will be a lot of people feel-ing the same.

What prompted you to do it?My husband and I were talking

about how I had never tried hyp-nosis and it planted the seed again. There was a combination of things and I was ready to do it. I went to social media and I haven’t looked back really.

How is it going? I hear you have made some great progress.

Progress is going really well, you have some good weeks and some not so good weeks and it’s just working through them and I get to verbalise them as well. There was one week that I had 4kg put on and I was like ‘how did that happen’ but we worked through it and that’s what I do every week. It’s also learning about your body really. I’m 46-years-old and I’m still learning.

So do you have a target weight?I would love to get under 100kg.

I haven’t been that since I was in high school. I’m determined, no more, I’m not going to go back again, it’s too hard to start again

and I’ve done it countless times. If you don’t mind me asking,

what was your starting weight and where are you sitting now?

I started out at 199.5kg and I’m down to 172.1kg. I’ve got a long way to go but I’m getting there. I’m getting close to losing 30kg, I’m at 27.4kg now.

And I hear you are in training for the City2Surf next month, how is that going?

I am trying to do something every day, an 8.2km walk has been the biggest so far. We did a walk recently with about 35 friends, whanau and supporters from the page. Some went for a 3.2km walk and some others went for a 5km. We’re trying to do it every week before the City2Surf to prepare. I’m doing some swimming and

aqua zumba in the mornings so I’m up at 5.30am. I did the 6km last year when I was on a semi-diet but I struggled. But this year I am way fitter than what I was and will try the 14km.

What was the focus for you when you started the plan?

The focus for me was getting the kai right. We work on the food first, the exercise will come once you get in the buzz. I just started aqua-jogging three days a week. I’m a bit of an addict now, we just shake our booties and shake our wobbly bits and no-one cares.

Do you have goals or rewards along the way?

Every 10kg I lose, I give myself a reward. The first 20kg I lost I got my eyelashes done. When I get to 30kg I’m going to get my hair done. Usually my husband does it, he’s not the best hairdresser but I love him.

What advice would you give others who are wanting to do the same as you?

I think what they need to do is sit down and think about what they really want to do. If you don’t have that head space right you’re setting yourself up to fail. It’s baby steps and the 10-day count down is a good idea because they will truly understand what they are going to endeavour. The secret is having great support, even at work here we’re quite fit and healthy conscious. We feed off each other and they are amazing. I’m very blessed.

Medals aplenty for schoolsBY KYLE KNOWLES

Christchurch schools had a spectacular medal haul at the South Island Rowing Champi-onships last week.

Rangi Ruru Girls’ School, St Margaret’s College, Christ-church Girls’ High School and St Andrew’s College had the largest medal tallies, winning 30 between them.

Rangi Ruru and St Andrew’s each came home from Lake Ruataniwha in Twizel with eight crews winning medals.

St Andrew’s could only man-age one gold medal in their haul which went to the novice coxed eight. They picked up three more silver medals and four bronze.

The Rangi Ruru team won only the one gold too but could have easily had many more, fin-ishing runner-up in seven other races. The gold medal boat was the under-15 coxed eight.

Rangi’s big boats were the shining stars for the school with seven of the eight medals com-ing from crews of four or eight.

The one smaller boat was the under-19 coxless pair of Libby Hazlett and Libby Vincent who missed out on gold by six seconds to the Girls’ High crew of Grace Shaw and Sophie Jackson.

Five St Margaret’s crews won gold. They were the under-19, under-16 and under-15 coxed four and the under-17 and 19 coxed eights.

Girls’ High scored seven medals, including four golds.

Under-19 pair Grace Shaw and Sophie Jackson won their event while three of the school’s novice crews won their catego-ries. They were the coxed eight, coxed four and double scullers

Arlia Schurr and Laura Pinnell.Other Christchurch schools

had successful regattas as well.Christs’ College and Christ-

church Boys High School each won six medals with half of them being golds.

St Thomas of Canterbury College had the one gold medal crew in the form of under-17 boys double scullers Alex Coulthard and Jakob Mangels. The school won a silver and a

bronze also.Villa Maria College and St

Bede’s College both won four medals while Burnside High School and Avonside Girls’ High School picked up one each.

For all of the schools, this regatta was good preparation for the South Island Secondary School Championships in early March and the Maadi Cup at the end of March to be held at Lake Karapiro near Cambridge.

A pharmacy in Bishopdale has de-feated 300 others around the coun-try to take out two coveted awards for contribution to the community and profession.

Bishopdale Unichem Pharmacy was awarded the 2014 Green Cross Health Pharmacy of the Year and Unichem Pharmacy of the Year at a conference in Australia, taking home two of the four awards on offer.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, pharmacy owners Maria McIntyre and Amanda Nuttall said it was a shock and privilege to re-ceive the awards.

The pharmacy, built by Mrs Nut-tall’s father Keith Nuttall was Bish-opdale’s community pharmacist for more than four decades and has recently participated in a Canter-bury demonstration project aimed at supporting community pharma-cies to explore ways to work dif-ferently and free up more time to spend with patients.

Ms McIntyre said the key driv-ers of the Canterbury demonstra-tion project – focusing on patients and collaborating on patient care – were the same contributors to win-ning the awards.

“One of the key enablers to our success, apart from our amazing team, was being part of the demo site project,” she said.

“We were ranked very highly in customer feedback. That recognis-es customer care throughout the entire pharmacy and is what we’re

probably most proud of.“We want outstanding customer

care and service, every customer, every patient, every time.

“Any services which community pharmacy can provide, we would like the people in our community to be able to access through us,” she said.

Canterbury Clinical Network pharmacy leader Jacqui Lawson said the pharmacy shows just what a pharmacy can offer its community.

“Their work with general prac-

tice and the rest of the health care team has helped them provide well appreciated patient care,” Ms Law-son said.

“We’re proud and excited that they have been recognised and can represent the hard work and achievements of pharmacies par-ticipating in the project across Canterbury.”

Ms McIntyre said the pharma-cy’s biggest gain has been working more closely as part of the health care team to improve care for pa-tients.

Christchurch Boys’ High School student Ben Ashby and Kate Hellings from St Margaret’s College will star in The Anthony Harper Summer Theatre Season show Peter Pan.

Ben, 17, of St Albans will star as Peter Pan and Kate, 17, of Redcliffs will play his counter-part Wendy.

The show, held at Riccarton House, is part of Christchurch City Council’s SummerTimes programme and runs until February 22.

Tinker Bell, Captain Hook and the Lost Boys are played by other members of The Court Youth Company alongside three professional actors – Vanessa Kumar who finished her profes-sional actor’s training at Toi Whakaari in Wellington last year; Andrew Ford, a former Christchurch resident now based in Auckland; and Derek Flores, a Canadian improvisa-tional actor who has made his home in Christchurch.

The Court Youth Company is selected from the top talent in the city amongst 17-21-year-olds and have worked with and received training at The Court over the last year.

Behind the scenes is a team from The Court Theatre includ-ing director Daniel Pengelly,

costume designer Aimee Reed, set and props designer Oliver Morse, stage manager Alice Par-doe and operator Alex Le Cocq.

City council events produc-tion team manager Chloe Dear said the actors made up their own version of the Peter Pan story.

Improvisation was used in developing the play so the actors could engage with the themes of the theatrical production rather than reciting lines.

The show runs between Wednesday and Sunday at 7pm, with an additional 2pm show on weekends.

Street parking is available or limited car parking is available at the Riccarton Bush car park.

Government funding has been al-located for the city’s new Major Cycle Routes, including one in Papanui.

Last week Transport Minister Simon Bridges announced the first round of funding from the Government’s Urban Cycleway Fund would include an allo-cation for sections of two major cycle routes to be built this year.

The Papanui Parallel has been al-located funds, with $250,000 going towards a section passing through Rutland Reserve.

A shared pedestrian and cycle path would link Grassmere Rd to Rutland St.

The New Zealand Land Transport Fund was allocating $250,000, leaving $250,000 for the city council.

The fund would also see $500,000 allocated towards the 400m Matai St East section of the Uni-Cycle route.

The work would see improvements made to the Fendalton Rd, Harper Rd and Deans Ave intersection as well as a signalised cycle crossing of Deans Ave at Matai St.

The NZLTF is contributing $550,000, leaving $550,000 for the city council to complete the project.

Infrastructure, transport and envi-ronment committee chairman Phil Clearwater said the sections selected for funding were parts of routes the city council had confirmed as being the first priority to be built.

“[The] announcement is a welcome endorsement by the Government of our approach to improving travel op-tions in our city.

“It gives the city council and the many people who have supported the Major Cycle Routes network

confidence to push ahead with these projects.

“It also provides some assurance that there are funding avenues avail-able for the programme that recognise the wider benefits of increased cycling rates. It makes it clear that the full investment in the routes does not have to be met by local ratepayers,” he said.

Cr Clearwater said the city coun-cil agreed the first four routes to be built as well as adopting in principle a detailed design guide to show how the 13 routes will be built to provide a facility that will lead to more people cycling by providing a much improved level of safety.

“We have asked staff to provide more information on the costs and benefits so we can consider that and include it for discussion with the com-munity during development of the Long Term Plan 2015-25,” he said.

The first four routes the city council will build are:

• Uni-Cycle: The link from Can-terbury University to the central city through Hagley Park.

• Papanui Parallel: Connecting Northlands and the Northern Rail route to the central city.

• Quarryman’s Trail: The link between Halswell, Hoon Hay and Somerfield to the Southern Lights route which connects the southern suburbs around Beckenham to the central city.

• Rapanui − Shag Rock Cycleway: From the Coastal Pathway at Fer-rymead to the central city.

The city council will begin consulta-tion on some further routes in coming weeks.

FOOD

Jam packed

A little lime zest added to strawberry jam gives it a subtle and fresh flavour. It’s a favourite on freshly baked scones. Or spoon it over thin crepes with a little creme fraiche, and it’s just as delicious on toast and bagels. Or what about a Swiss roll?

Ingredients1½ kgs nectarines, ripe 1 cup water 1 vanilla pod 2 tbsp fresh lime juice, or use lemon juice 1½ kgs raw sugar

Directions

Using the point of a sharp paring knife, score each nectarine. Place the fruit in a bowl then cover with boiling water and leave for 15 minutes.

Peel the fruit, discard the skin and stones then roughly chop the flesh.

Put the fruit in a heavy-based

saucepan or preserving pan. Add the water. Slit the vanilla pod and scrape the seeds into the pan. Add the pod along with the lime or lemon juice and the sugar.

Stir to combine then bring to a boil and stir while cooking, for 45 minutes. Ladle into hot, sterilised jars.

Homemade jam makes a lovely gift. If you can’t find jam-setting sugar, normal sugar is fine – your jam will just need to cook a little longer. Always test a little on a saucer to ensure you get that perfect consistency.

Strawberry and lime jam Makes 3 cups

Nectarine and vanilla jam Makes 4 x 250ml

Ingredients500 g strawberries, hulled and cut in half 500 g jam-setting sugar ½ lime, zested 1 tbsp butter

DirectionsPlace the strawberries, sugar and

lime zest in a heavy saucepan. Slowly bring to a simmer, stirring continuously over a medium heat until the sugar has dissolved.

Then bring it to a boil. Contin-ue to boil for 8-10 minutes.

Place a little on a saucer and if it is sticky and starting to set, remove it from the heat. If not, continue to boil for a further few minutes.

Remove from heat, stir through butter until melted. Pour the jam into sterilised jars and seal.

STRONG: Pupils performing the haka.

NEW BEGINNINGS: Bishop Victoria Matthews leading the first church service of the year for the school.

FRESH: New school pupils welcomed during the powhiri.

St Michael’s Church School welcomed the new school year with a powhiri to greet new principal Marshall Diggs and all other newcomers. Pupils and families assembled on the school green where a haka, a speech of welcome and a hongi took place. The morning’s events were concluded with Mass officiated by Bishop Victoria Matthews in St Michael’s and All Angels Church. St Michael’s is the oldest established primary school in Christchurch, founded in 1851 in a small wooden cottage on the banks of the Avon River.

Worried about a MOLE?

[Edition datE]2

A body of research already exists showing aerobic exercise improves brain function in older adults, but there is a limited amount of

literature on how it affects young adults. The Otago researchers, led by Department

of Psychology senior lecturer Dr Liana Machado, set out to test the oft-held belief that the brains of young adults in their prime might not benefit as much as older people from regular sustained exercise.

They took 52 tertiary students, aged

between 18 to 30, and put them through a series of cognitive tests on a computer while measuring oxygen availability in the frontal lobe of their brains, as well as their self-reported exercise frequency.

Dr Machado says their “surprising” findings, just published online in the journal Psychophysiology, show that both blood supply to the brain and cognitive functioning appear to benefit from regular exercise in young adults.

“This provides compelling evidence that

regular exercise, at least five days per week, is a way to sharpen our cognitive ability as young adults – challenging the assumption that living a sedentary lifestyle leads to problems only later in life,” she says.

The research also provides potential insight into understanding why people who regularly engage in aerobic exercise tend to function better on a cognitive level.

“I think the idea that young people do not have to worry about exercising since they are in their prime developmentally is rapidly being overturned by mounting evidence that even the brains of young adults can benefit from regular exercise,” she says.

“The exercise could involve brisk walking or more vigorous activity, and could be made up of a few 10-minute bouts of exercise,

rather than one single block of exercise,” she says.

The researchers also found that body mass index was not a key factor in how well the brain functioned, indicating that regular engagement in physical activity may be more important than body weight.

Dr Machado says she had noticed over the years that university students appeared progressively less fit.

“I wondered whether we might find significant relationships between exercise levels, oxygen availability in the brain and cognition in the young adults, but no studies had considered this in healthy young adults.”

These findings come at a time of increased scientific focus on links between exercise and cognitive health in older adults.

Regular physical activity improves brain function even in young adults considered in their prime and at the height of cognitive ability, according to a new University of Otago study.

Exercise sharpens young adult brain

Selling the DreamTravel posters dating from the early to mid-20th century on display at

Canterbury Museum were celebrated with an event on January 29. Selling the Dream showcases some of the most iconic images which were used to sell New Zealand to tourists as a magical place to visit – the world’s dream destination.

Designed by an army of talented artists, the posters represent a golden age in this country’s tourism industry which was aimed at both international as well as domestic travellers. The cocktail party held at the museum was an opportunity for invited guests to browse the works and commemorate the skill which created them.Beverley Bolland, Rod Syme

Fathers closer to sonsBY JONATHAN OWEN

A new generation of fathers and sons are closer than ever before, says new research, and the im-proved relationships bode well for future generations, accord-ing to experts.

Fathers are twice as likely to be “close” to their sons today, with more than one in three (35 per cent) describing their rela-tionship in this way. But only 18 per cent felt the same about how they got on with their own father, according to a United Kingdom survey, by OnePoll, of 1000 men with sons aged between 12 and 16.

Relationships with their own fathers were rated as “terrible” by seven per cent of today’s fathers, with only two per cent saying the same thing about their son. And although more than one in five had a “strained” relationship with their dads, only one in 10 said it about their son.

Clinical psychologist Dr Fiona Starr, of Middlesex Uni-versity, says: “These research findings confirm what psychol-ogists and therapists are seeing in their clinics, namely the nature of fatherhood, boyhood

and the relationships between fathers and their sons are more involved, more communicative and more attentive than ever.

“In the UK at least, this could lead to future generations of emotionally intelligent fathers, raising thoughtful, communi-cative sons willing and able to bring home so much more than just the ‘bacon’.”

Being present at the birth and having greater involvement

in child rearing were helping strengthen the bonds between fathers and sons, according to Starr.

Generational tastes remain distinct, however. The boys of today might listen to David Guetta and Calvin Harris while their fathers listened to Stereo-phonics and Oasis. And when it comes to what to watch on TV, The Simpsons has replaced Match of the Day as the show

most cited by boys. Childhood pastimes most cited by fathers included playing football in the park or tree climbing, while their sons play computer games.

Nearly four out of 10 boys started after-school jobs at the age of 14, compared with 16 a generation ago. David Beckham was the celebrity most cited as a good fatherhood exemplar, although in Scotland Homer Simpson came out top.

ATTENTIVE: Fathers this century spend more quality time with sons.

Looking after your trees during the summer months is fairly simple, routine work. The most important aspect is to ensure that your trees are getting enough water, especially the fruit and young newly planted trees. Watering trees can help prevent drought stress which can cause trees to weaken and become more susceptible to attack by insects and disease. It is advisable to water trees once to twice a week, the best time being in the early morning hours so that the moisture does not evaporate.Summer is a good time to plan a planting scheme for your garden. Pay attention to the areas of the home which would benefit by shade trees. Deciduous trees (those that lose their leaves) give the added bonus of allowing sunlight in during winter.

We receive a lot of enquiries in relation to trees blocking sunlight all year round. The trees vary from overgrown Pitto’s to large mature Oak trees and each scenario is unique in relation to tree species, size and position in relation to buildings. There are many ways in which trees can be pruned to allow more sunlight in to our properties. The answer is not always to remove the tree. At Alba Tree Services we offer free advice on the best course of action for your trees, tailored to both the customers and the trees requirementsContact us today on – t: 033602962 m: 02108317293 e: [email protected] w: www.albatreeservices.co.nz

Rebecca Cragnolini, who is an NLP practitioner and self hypnosis coach, explains that we are sensory beings which means that

we experience the world through what we see, hear, feel, taste and smell.

As we develop, we learn to use language to describe these sensory experiences and we continue to use sensory-based language for other activities and events. For example, “I can see what you’re saying”, or “we’ll touch on that later”. Rebecca points out that we describe other people in a sensory way, too. They may be bright or a colourful character,

Language of change

When you really take the time to listen to people speaking, it’s fascinating to see how we use language.

or very grounded or even in touch with what’s going on.

When it comes to describing problems, we, too, use sensory language. For example, “I feel so stuck”; “I can’t see a way forward”; “It stinks”, or “I’m trying to shake it off but still feel bitter”. Understanding this can be a powerful tool when it comes to making changes. Rebecca says that it’s important to know how we use sensory language as clues not only to what the problem is but also the solution.

Our minds respond well to symbols, images, sounds and feelings. Last month

Rebecca talked about the power of our imagination. Building on that, she explains that when we combine imagination with sensory language, it gives our mind a clear direction of what it’s aiming for. By being aware of how we describe the issue or change that we want, we create new images, sounds, feelings of what we would like.

She has two helpful tips if you are feeling stuck. Firstly, imagine what breaking free would be like, focusing on what you see, hear, feel and maybe taste and smell. Then imagine yourself striding forward with the solution and experience what it’s like to

look back and take what you have learnt. Another tip is to imagine your problem

written on postix stuck on you and then shaken off, ripped up and left to blow or be washed away, leaving a sweet or refreshing taste.

For more information about groups and individual sessions to make the changes you’d like, visit www.re-mind.net.nz, email [email protected] or ring 021 163 8543.

Lindisfarne was established in 1987 and is a small privately run nursery school. The separate nursery building caters for up to 14 babies,

and the preschool is licenced for up to 36 children. We pride ourselves on providing as much a home-like environment as possible for all of the children who attend Lindisfarne.

Our team consists of all trained and registered teachers, a teacher’s aide, a teaching assistant, and a cook and cleaner.

We pride ourselves on being a multi-cultural centre, both through the

nationalities of the children who attend and the nationalities of our teaching staff.

The large private play area allows the children to engage in lots of physical activities as well as imaginative play. Our on-site primary school teacher ensures all children are well-prepared to start primary school.

The new themes have been available in-store in January and already have a strong vote of approval from parents booking parties.

New themes include Frozen, Circus, Ladybug and Monster Truck.

They all come with brilliant invitations that will look great on party guests’ fridges until party day.

And Frozen will not be out of place in our summer heat. All party rooms are air conditioned for your comfort.

Our traditional children’s favourite themes of Pirate, Princess, Dinosaur and Charlie Chipmunk are still available and in demand.

Early bookings are essential to ensure the theme of your choice.

In 2013, the government announced changes to the laws around child restraints. The changes require mandatory use of a child restraint for children up to 7 years

of age, and the use of an appropriate child restraint if there is one available until 8 years old. This new law came into effect on November 1, 2013.

This means that if your child aged between 5 and 7 years has moved to the vehicle seatbelt on their own, they will need to return to a booster seat.

Plunket and other child safety advocates continue to encourage booster seat use for

Privately run nursery school

Families are more than welcome to call in at any time to view the programme and meet the teachers.

Booster seats for childreneven longer, as research shows that until a child is around 148 centimetres tall, they need a booster seat to get the best protection in a crash.

Plunket is pleased to give advice to anyone unsure of their position regarding this change in legislation. They hire and sell all types of child restraints, including booster seats, and will install these in your vehicle free of charge. They also offer free advice and guidance so you can be sure you are giving your child the best protection when they travel in your vehicle.
