8) Group nouns We mean the group as a unit or the individuals who make the group.

A) verb in the singular or plural – firm, company, family, jury, government, class, army, team, management, committee, crowd, council…

Almost every family has a car in our town. Our family have lunch at 12. The jury is ready to give the verditct. The jury are all staying at the hotel. These words also have regular plurals. Many families are in need of help. The crowds were cheering. B) verb in the singular or plural – the majority, the public, the youth, staff, audience, press The public wants / want to know …… These words do not have regular plural forms. (not the publics)

C) verb only in the plural – cattle, people (peoples = národy), the military, the police, vermin
