St Michael’s Hotel scoops “Best Spa in Cornwall” for second year running

Pictured  above:    Nigel  Carpenter,  Proprietor  (St  Michael’s  Hotel  &  Spa)  celebrating  being  the  ‘Best  Spa  in  Cornwall’  for  the  second  year  running.

St  Michael’s  Spa,  Falmouth  are  the  proud  winners  of  Cornwall  Today’s  Best  Spa  Award  for  the  second  consecutive  year,  as  voted  for  by  the  readers.  The  glittering  awards  ceremony,  which  took  place  on  Thursday  25th  September  in  Newquay  was  a  fabulous  celebration  of  the  best  businesses  and  services  in  Cornwall.  Now  officially  the  ‘Best  Spa  in  Cornwall’  for  the  second  year  running,  the  awards  reflect  the  reader’s  opinions  and  are  a  testament  to  the  luxury  service  and  four  star  superior  offering  that  the  St  Michael’s  Spa  and  fitness  team  deliver  with  pride.    St  Michael’s  Hotel  &  Spa  is  a  contemporary  yet  luxury  destination  for  discerning  day  guests,  locals  and  visitors  alike  benefitting  from  a  £5  million  investment  into  new  interiors  and  facilities.

Nigel  Carpenter,  St  Michael’s  Hotel  &  Spa  proprietor,  said  “I  am  delighted  and  honoured  for  St  Michael’s  Spa  to  have  been  chosen  to  be  “Best  Spa  in  Cornwall”  for  the  second  year  in  a  row.  We  are  very  grateful  to  the  readers  of  Cornwall  Today  and  our  many  customers  who  obviously  voted  for  us.  St  Michael’s  spa  facilities  are  great  but  it  is  our  exceptionally  talented  team  of  therapists  who  really  make  the  difference,  and  I  am  extremely  proud  of  them.  Our  recruitment  and  training  standards  are  exacting,  but  it  is  wonderful  to  see  all  that  hard  work  pay  off.”

He  continues:  “Our  mantra  is  to  feel  good  again  and  we  are  certainly  feeling  good  today!  At  St  Michael’s  we  strive  to  innovate  and  evolve  our  luxury  offering  and  it  is  great  to  be  recognised  by  those  who  use  the  St  Michael’s  Spa  and  know  that  we  are  doing  well  in  Cornwall.”

National  Animal  Welfare  Trust  has  been  driving  the  work  of  rescue  and  rehoming  in  Cornwall  for  more  than  15  years.  It  set  up  a  base  in  Cornwall  after  taking  over  the  animal  rescue  work  of  Molly  Wyatt  who  had  run  a  scheme  in  the  area  up  until  her  death  in  1997.  The  current  site  at  Wheal  Alfred  Kennels  in  Hayle  was  bought  thanks  in  the  main  to  an  inspiring  fundraising  drive  by  local  volunteers  and  the  community,  raising  more  than  £300K.

Our  Falmouth  shop  supports  our  work  The  National  Animal  Welfare  Trust  (charity  no.  1090499)  is  one  of  the  UK’s  top  10  animal  rescue  charities.  It  operates  five  rescue  centres  across  the  South  of  England.    Our  shops  play  an  important  role  as  they  help  us  cover  our  animal  welfare  costs.  They  also  help  us  promote  the  rescue  and  rehoming  work  we  do  in  Cornwall.  Every  year  our  Hayle  Centre  rehomes  around  300  cats  and  dogs,  offering  them  a  chance  of  a  new  life  in  a  loving  home.    The  new  quirky,  2  floor  Arwenack  Street  shop  sells  a  wide  range  of  range  of  books,  bric-‐a-‐brac,  clothing,  household  goods  and  furniture  in  store  at  excellent  prices.  Our  Christmas  cards  are  also  in  store  now!  It  is  also  home  to  one  of  the  few  dog  friendly  cafés  in  Falmouth  town  centre  –  perfect  if  you’re  looking  for  somewhere  to  stop  after  a  visit  to  the  beach  or  a  walk  round  town.  And  with  delicious  cakes  made  by  Falmouth’s  own  baker  Annie’s  Kitchen,  you  can  be  sure  of  a  tasty  treat  to  accompany  your  cuppa.

FRIENDS OF TREGONIGGIE WOODLAND We are a new friendly volunteer group who are helping to maintain and revitalise the woodland with the support of the local authority. To achieve this we need more help; we hold regular work parties on the SECOND and FOURTH Saturday of each month (weather permitting) 10am – 12 pm. We meet at the Venton Road entrance (at the two bridges over the stream).

Next work parties: November 8th and 22nd, December 13th and 27th (a chance to work off the Christmas excess!).

We’d love to see you there – please bring stiff broom, spade, rake if you have them and wear suitable clothing and footwear, it can be muddy. Look out for the notices on the gate, which tells you what we will be doing. In December, we plan to be planting some more trees.

Come and join us! More details from Euan McPhee on 01326 219008.

Making  the  Falmouth  and  Penryn  area

Dementia Friendly    -‐  The  villages  in  the  area  are  included.

Dementia  is  a  condition  resulting  from  a  disease  that  affects  the  brain.  Our  population  is  living  longer,  and  a  rise  in  the  incidence  of  dementia  is  occurring,  but  dementia  is  NOT  CAUSED  BY  AGEING.  Each  and  every  one  of  us  needs  to  encompass  a  little  knowledge  of  dementia,  and  this  awareness  can  greatly  improve  the  lives  of  people  living  with  the  condition,  and  the  lives  of  their  carers,  families  and  friends.  This  will  help  them  to  LIVE  WELL  WITH  DEMENTIA.

The  work  of  the  FALMOUTH  DEMENTIA  ACTION  ALLIANCE  (part  of  a  National  initiative)  began  in  2012,  and  Falmouth  has  evolved  to  become  a  quoted  example  of  how  a  community  can  embrace  a  step  change  in  attitude  through  making  small  changes.

Research  was  carried  out  to  discover  what  people  affected  wanted,  and  based  upon  that  evidence,  work  began  to  ask  local  businesses  to  commit  to  at  least  one  action  to  help  to  RAISE  AWARENESS  of  dementia.  Booklets  with  helpful  information  were  made  available  for  customer  facing  staff,  free  of  charge,  Cornwall  College  set  up  a  short  NVQ  level  2  course,  and  Dementia  Friends  45  minute  sessions  were  offered  as  well  as  other  help.  More  than  two  hundred  local  businesses  became  members  of  the  Falmouth  Dementia  Action  Alliance,  and  currently  a  drive  is  taking  place  to  encourage  more  to  join.  It  is  an  easy  process,  and  there  is  no  cost  to  members  because  DAA  volunteers  work  to  raise  funds.  Alongside  this,  an  invitation  has  been  given  to  schools  and  colleges  to  involve  the  younger  generation  in  dementia  awareness  by  becoming  Dementia  Friends.  Through  educating  young  people,  the  stigma  that  is  often  felt  will  be  reduced  and  eventually  eliminated,  and  they  will  grow  up  to  be  considerate,  helpful  and  understanding  adults.

Dementia  Friends  sessions  are  fun  and  free,  with  the  purpose  of  spreading  awareness  throughout  the  community.  Only  lasting  45  minutes,  each  participant  receives  a  badge.  They  are  conducted  by  trained  Dementia  Champions  and  all  ages  are  welcome,  in  groups  of  any  size.  Just  contact  the  FDAA  for  details.

Volunteers  are  welcomed  to  assist  with  all  kinds  of  tasks,  and  this  leads  me  onto  the  Falmouth  Memory  Cafe  and  the  singing  and  activity  group  named  Thank  for  the  Memory.  These  groups  meet  in  a  lovely  room  at  the  rear  of  the  Emmanuel  Church  which  is  on  Western  Terrace,  Falmouth.  The  Memory  Cafe  is  every  second  and  fourth  Tuesday  from  2  -‐  4,  and  Thanks  for  the  Memory  is  on  the  first,  third  and  fifth  Tuesdays  from  2  -‐  4.  The  entrance  is  through  the  double  door  just  down  the  drive,  where  a  warm  welcome  awaits,  as  well  as  refreshments  and  lively  company.

Currently,  the  FDAA  is  involved  in  making  activities  available  to  those  whose  dementia  has  affected  their  ability,  e.g.  gardening  etc.  Also,  we  will  enable  those  restricted  through  transport  problems,  to  get  to  activities.

The  Falmouth  Dementia  Action  Alliance  is  run  entirely  by  volunteers,  and  receives  its  income  from  donations.

Do  please  get  in  touch.  We  are  happy  to  help.    Don't  let  the  phone  system  put  you  off,  you'll  get  through!

Laser Tattoo Removal comes to Penryn

Waterside Skincare are now offering laser tattoo removal treatments using the NHS approved, Luminette-Q machine.

Perhaps you regret having a tattoo and you no longer

want a permanent mark on your body? Do you have a tattoo that didn’t turn out how you wanted?

Do you want to fade an existing tattoo to have a new design on top?

Laser tattoo removal is simple, safe, and produces fantastic results. The laser technology works by breaking up the ink into tiny particles which

are disposed of through the body’s lymphatic system. It usually takes several treatment sessions and this depends on different factors including the tattoo size, if it was done professionally, the type of

ink used and the level of fading you want. Most people’s first question is how painful is it? Of course it depends on

your own pain threshold but most people describe it as a hot, flicky/stinging sensation. It is a fairly quick treatment so most people can

tolerate it. To find out more information we recommend you book in for a

free consultation to have a chat. You can call Waterside Skincare on 01326 389322 or book online at

All Welcome

Filling  Station  Report  The  Filling  Station  meeting  in  the  Penmorvah  Manor  Hotel  on  the  13th  October  was  a  well  attended,  spirit-‐filled  occasion,  with  people  from  all  over  the  Falmouth  area.  Hilary  Latham  gave  an  interesting  talk  on  the  'Signs  of  the  Times'.  Are  we  living  through  the  time  when  our  Lord  is  going  to  return?  People  have  been  asking  this  ever  since  Jesus  was  crucified  and  resurrected.  Wars,  diseases,  famines  and  natural  disasters  have  occurred  at  greater  or  lesser  intensity  in  the  past  2000  years,  only  now  are  they

seeming  to  become  more  frequent.  Is  the  Lord  coming?  Or  is  this  due  to  pressure  of  population  growth  on  resources  on  land  and  sea;  food  supply,  water  supply  and  fuel?  And  compounded  by  the  fact  that  many  more  people  are  crowding  into  areas  where  natural  disasters  are  likely  to  occur.  Reporting  world  events  is  more  sophisticated  now  and  news  thrives  on  disaster,  of  course.  One  thing  we  do  know  is  that  we  are  closer  to  that  time  than  we  were,  these  events  could  be  precursors  to  Jesus'  return,  we  just  don't  know.  As  Jesus  himself  said,  that  not  even  he  knew  the  Father's  mind  on  this  matter.  What  we  have  to  do  is  be  prepared  because  he  could  return  at  any  moment.  So  hopefully  we  are  ready  and  part  of  that  preparation  is  to  spread  the  Good  News  so  that  many  more  will  be  saved.  Don  Latham  gave  a  short  talk  on  bringing  people  to  the  Lord  in  the  workplace  and  the  many  healings  he  has  witnessed.  This  meeting,  with  the  worship  music  provided  by  Joff  and  a  moving,  life  changing  event  given  by    Noel  King,  was  well  attended  by  70  people.  We  must  thank  the  Penmorvah  hotel  for  their  hospitality,  their  superb  coffee  and  heavenly  Muffins.

Next  month  the  speaker  will  be  Martin  Cavender,  director  of  reSource  renewal  ministries,  who  worked  with  George  Cary,  an  ex  Archbishop  of  Canterbury,  another  speaker  not  to  be  missed.

So,  see  you  again  on  Monday  November  10th  at  7:30pm.  Phone  01326  378065  if  you  need  transport.
