The vast majority of cities I’ve visited in South Korea have a notoriously crowded, neon and flashing light laden, sensory overloading, heavily concentrated nightlife, dining and shopping district where local stu-dents, expats and tourists converge. Although these areas are a sure guarantee for a lively night on the town, sometimes you just want a night that’s a little less...extreme.한국에서 필자가 방문했던 도시의 대다수에는 사람이 붐비기로 악명이 높고 및 네오사인과 강렬한 빛이 가득하고 감각을 자극하는 것들이 넘쳐나며 과도하게 집중된 나이트 라이프, 식당, 쇼핑구역이 있다. 그리고 이 곳에는 그 지역에 살고 있는 학생, 외국인 관광객들이 모여든다. 확실하게 활기가 넘치는 밤을 보낼 수 있는 보장된 곳이지만 가끔은 조금 덜 극단적인 밤을 원할 때도 있을 것이다.

Cue Daebong-ro in Daegu, a relatively quiet, unobtru-sive street lined with craft beer bars, open-air BBQ restaurants and small, intimate eateries. On this road sits Percent Craft Beer Pub, an oasis of sorts in a city as “colorful” as Daegu.

Although they do not brew their own, Percent features an oft-changing variety of draft beers from local and international breweries as well as a significant list of bottled craft selections. The scattered streets located directly behind Hyundai Department Store downtown are called Yangyeongsi, an area well known for its dealings with traditional herbal medicines. However, this area has also started to become something of a booming hot spot for trendy new culinary delights. Small dessert cafes, Italian eateries, and modernized Korean dabang coffee shops have all seem to have sprung up in the past year, lead-ing to a modern resurgence in popularity to an other-wise calm series of roadways. 약령시는 현대백화점 바로 뒷편에 촘촘히 펼쳐진 골목이며 전통 한약재를 취급하는 곳으로 잘 알려져 있다. 그러나 이 곳은 떠오르는 핫스팟이 되고 있으며 트렌디하고 새로운 맛집이 모여 있다. 지난해부터 작은 디저트 카페, 이탈리안 음식점과 현대화된 한국식 다방이 생겨나기 시작했으며, 이는 조용하던 거리로 사람들을 이끌어 이 곳의 부활을 알리고 있다.

One such establishment is called Brewers Brothers, a quaint pub unabashedly touting its craft beers and fish and chips. from its exterior facade to interior wooden tables and chairs, the design is certainly meant to invoke something of an Irish pub. The menu tries to reflect this as well. The plates and sides are limited to one page, but when you’re in a pub like this, who needs more? Standard fish n Chips are their speciality and will run you 12,000 won (15,000 for a large size). feeling like you want a spin on a classic? Try their Shrimp and Chips or Sausage and Chips dish for 1,000won more. The plate will arrive quickly and loaded with crispy

fries, and golden, crunchy beer battered fish fillets. You’ll be salivating like Pavlov’s dog in no time. Your typical run of the mill pizzas, plus a special in-house pizza, as well as nachos and fries make up the side menu.그런 곳 중 하나가 Brewer’s Brothers이다. 예스러운 펍이면서도 뻔뻔하게도 수제맥주와 피쉬앤 칩스를 내세우고 있다. 디자인은 건물 외부 정면에서부터 실내의 나무 테이블과 의자까지 아이리쉬 펍의 분위기를 떠오르게끔 의도한 것이 확실하다. 메뉴 또한 그 느낌을 반영하려 고심한 흔적이 보인다. 주요리와 사이드메뉴가 한 페이지에 불과하지만 이런 펍에 있다면 그 이상이 필요할까? 기본적인 피쉬앤 칩스가 이 가게의 전문이고 가격은 12,000원이다(큰 사이즈는 15,000원). 클래식한 메뉴가 당긴다면 1,000원만 더 내고 쉬림프앤 칩스나 소시지앤 칩스를 맛보길 바란다. 바삭한 감자튀김과 맥주반죽으로 만든 황금빛의 바삭한 생선튀김이 담긴 접시가 금새 나올 것이다. 그리고 그 즉시 파블로프의 개처럼 군침을 흘리게 될 것이다. 사이드 메뉴에는 나초와 감자튀김뿐만 아니라 이 곳만의 스페셜한 피자와 더불어 평범한 피자가 있다.

Moving on to the drinks, Brewer’s Brothers boasts 6 craft beers on tap. A Belgian Wit, German Weizen Pale Ale, an Imperial Stouts coupled with their own Brewer’s Lager make up a bountiful selection ranging from just 4,000 won to 10,000 won (while a craft beer sampler is also available for 12,000 won). On top of all this, bottled beer and various liquors are also offered. 마실거리를 살펴보면, Brewer’s Brothers가 자랑하는 6가지의 수제맥주가 생맥주로 준비되어 있다. 벨기에 위트, 독일 바이젠 페일에일, 임페리얼 스타우트와 Brewer’s Brothers만의 Brewer’s Lager 세트가 다양한 셀렉션을 구성하고 있고, 4000원에서 10,000원 사이의 가격으로 준비되어 있다. 그리고 수제맥주 샘플러가 12,000원이다. 이 외에도 병맥주와 다양한 종류의 술 역시 준비되어 있다.

Tucked along a nondescript alley in downtown Daegu is a restaurant that puts atmosphere and presentation on the back burner. At 빨간김치 하얀쌀밥, it’s all about the food. Named after two staples that define Korea’s culinary identity, 빨간김치 하얀쌀밥 means “Red Kimchi, White Rice.” 빨간김치 하얀쌀밥 specializes in three things: rice, kimchi and pork.대구 시내의 흔한 골목 한적한 곳에 위치한 식당은 분위기와 인테리어가 뒷전이다. 빨간김치 하얀쌀밥은 음식이 전부이다. 가게이름은 2가지 한국 고유의 요리에서 비롯되었다. 이 식당은 밥, 김치, 돼지고기, 이 세가지가 전문인 곳이다.

frequented mostly by young patrons, 빨간김치 하얀쌀밥 is the definition of no-frills dining. The restaurant even offers adult bibs to protect diners’ clothes! These days, lunch hour brings with it a flurry of activity – servers rushing back and forth from the kitchen to cater the flood of customers.빨간김치 하얀쌀밥은 대부분 젊은 단골고객들이 찾으며, 기본에

충실한 식당이다. 식당은 손님들의 옷을 깨끗하게 하기 위해 앞치마도 제공한다. 요즘 점심시간이 되면 부산스럽기 그지 없다. 종업원들은 쏟아져 들어오는 손님들에게 음식을 나르기 위해 주방에 왔다갔다 바삐 움직인다.

It’s hard to imagine a time when business wasn’t boom-ing, but the husband and wife who own the restaurant, Mr. In-muk Kang and Mrs. Mi-ryeong Jo, said they got off to a rough start when they opened the restaurant in 2010. The first six months were filled with trial and er-ror. Some days, they had only a few customers. Once, the refrigerator broke and they had to throw all the food away.이 곳이 붐비지 않을 때를 상상하는 것이 어려울 정도지만, 이 식당의 주인인 강인묵씨와 그의 아내 조미령씨는 2010년 식당을 처음 시작했을 때 꽤 힘들었다고 말한다. 개업하고 6개월 동안은 수많은 고난과 실수가 넘쳐났다. 어떠 날은 손님이 조금 밖에 없기도 했다. 한 번은 냉장고가 고장이 나 모든 식자재를 버려야 했다.

SIMplICITY aT ITS BEST


Overwhelmed, the couple decided to take a step back and go on vacation. But their trip was cut short; they were called back to help at the restau-rant because it was swamped with customers! This fall marks the restaurant’s fifth year in busi-ness.지쳐버린 두 사람은 한 발짝 물러서 휴가를 갖기로 결정했다. 하지만 여행은 짧게 끝이 났다. 손님으로 눈코 뜰새 없이 바빠서 도와달라고 연락이 왔기 때문이었다. 이번 가을은 식당이 개업한 지 5주년 되는 해이다.

The menu offers three dishes including kimchi jjim (braised kimchi) and kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew), but the star of the show is the dwaeji galbi jjim: pork short ribs, kimchi and dangmyeon (sweet po-tato noodles) cooked low and slow in sweet, spicy red sauce until the meat is fall-off-the-bone tender.메뉴는 김치찜과 김치찌개, 이 곳의 주인공인 돼지갈비찜 등 세 가지이다. 하지만 이 중 최고는 돼지갈비찜이다. 돼지갈비찜은 돼지갈비, 김치, 당면을 매콤달콤한 고추장 소스와 함께 뼈에서 고기가 뼈에서 떨어져 나갈 정도로 부드러워질 때까지 낮은 온도에서 천천히 요리한다.

Dwaeji galbi jjim is offered in three levels of heat: 조금 매운맛 (a little spicy), 매운맛 (spicy) and 완전 매운맛 (ex-tremely spicy). “A little spicy” packs plenty of heat, and Mr. Kang said returning customers usually work their way up to the spiciest level.돼지갈비찜은 조금 매운맛, 매운맛, 완전 매운맛 등 세 가지 단계의 매운 맛으로 제공된다. 조금 매운맛도 꽤 매운 편이다. 강인묵씨는 다시 방문하는 손님들은 자신의 입맛에 맞는 맵기 정도를 주문한다고 한다.

The dish is served family style in the same battered metal bowl it was cooked in. The restaurant provides tongs and a pair of scissors for cutting the meat and kimchi into smaller pieces. The meal also includes a nice selection of banchan (Korean side dishes). These sides are refillable except for the jeon (pancake) and gyeran-mari (rolled omelette). The macaroni salad is great for cooling down one’s mouth between bites of spicy pork.음식은 요리가 될 때 사용되었던 닳은 금속 그릇에 다 같이 먹을 수 있도록 나오고 고기와 김치를 작게 자를 수 있는 집게와 가위를 내 준다. 그리고 엄선된 맛있는 반찬도 함께 나온다. 반찬은 전과 계란말이를 제외하고 리필이 가능하다. 마카로니 샐러드는 매운 돼지고기를 한 입 먹고 매운 맛을 가시게 할 때 좋다.

Unlike the kimchi jjim and kimchi jjigae, the dwaeji galbi jjim does not include gongibap (a side of rice), but diners should order it on the side because it comes with a larger bowl containing gim (dried seaweed), beansprouts and other vegetables that can be mixed with the rice and spoonfuls of dwaeji galbi jjim to make a delicious spoonful!김치찜과 김치찌개와 달리 돼지갈비찜은 공깃밥이 포함되어 있지 않지만 밥을 주문해야 한다. 밥을 시키면 김, 콩나물, 기타 채소가 들어 있는 커다란 그릇이 같이 나오는데 밥과 돼지갈비찜을 넣어 같이 비비면 가장 맛있는 한 숟가락이 된다!

Mr. Kang attributes the restaurant’s success to their attention to quality. They use fresh meat, never frozen. The portions are satisfying, however there’s a sign in-side 빨간김치 하얀쌀밥 that says, “We strive to offer the best possible ingredients at an affordable price. Please understand that this is why the portions are a little smaller.”

강인묵씨는 식당의 성공비결을 품질에 신경 쓴 결과로 보고 있다. 이곳은 냉동되지 않은 신선한 고기를 사용한다. 양은 충분한 것 같은데 식당 내부에는 “빨간김치 하얀쌀밥은 최고의 재료를 합리적인 가격에 제공하기 위해 노력합니다. 양이 다소 적더라도 이해해주세요” 라고 쓴 안내판이 있다.

Conveniently located in downtown, it offers great food at an affordable price and the service is fast and friendly. A meal for two costs only 16,000 won! Also, the restaurant only offers floor seating, so don’t forget to remove your shoes before taking a seat. The menu is all in Korean (see translation below). Here’s what to order:돼지갈비찜 이인분 하고 공기밥 두개 주세요. Dwaeji-gal-bi-jjim ee een boon hago gongi bap du gae juseyo.(Two servings of dwaeji galbi jjim and two sides of rice, please.)

시내에 위치해서 편리하고 훌륭한 음식을 합리적인 가격으로 제공하며 서비스도 빠르고 친절하다. 식사는 2인분에 단돈 16,000원이다! 식당의 전 좌석이 좌식이므로 자리에 앉기 전에 신발 벗는 것을 잊지 않아야 한다. 메뉴는 모두 한글로 되어 있다.

Decisions. Sometimes they are as small as switching from one gear to another while you’re riding your bike. Or deciding where to plant your feet while trying to avoid puddles on a rainy day. As a traveler though, de-cisions can make a world of difference. They can even change your life.결정. 때로는 자전거를 타는 동안 기어를 바꾸는 것만큼 작은 것이다. 혹은 비 오는 날 물웅덩이를 피하기 위해 어디에 발을 내디딜 것인지에 관한 것이기도 하다. 하지만 여행자에게 결정이란, 세상만큼 커다란 차이를 만들어 낼 수도 있다. 때로는 당신의 삶까지도 바꿀 수 있다.

My decision to walk Japan’s Nakasendo Trail opened new worlds to me. I discovered a Japan I had never experienced, one markedly different from the Japa-nese cities like Kyoto and Osaka I was familiar with. But the solitude of the Nakasendo, or Central Path, as it’s translated, gave me the time and space to rediscov-er something else, myself.일본의 나카센도를 걸어보기로 한 결정은 내게 새로운 세상을 열어주었다. 이전에 전혀 경험해보지 못 했던 일본을 발견하게 되었으며, 내게 익숙한 교토나 오사카와 같은 일본의 도시와는 전혀 다른 경험이었다. 하지만 말 그대로 중앙대로인 나카센도의 고즈넉함은 스스로가 무엇인가를 다시 발견할 수 있는 시간과 공간을 제공해주었다.

Ironically, I found my way to the Nakasendo during a board game night with some friends. I was randomly assigned to “that table over there” where the game Tokaido was spread across a card table. Players take turns walking their way across medieval Japan, stop-ping at inns, restaurants and hot springs acquiring points. The idea of an excursion across ancient Japan grew on me. I did some research, discovering there were actually a number of these trails crisscrossing Japan.

I settled on Oku Japan, a company that specializes in self-guided tours. After designing a hiking itiner-ary matching my interests, I left Korea for my 8-day hiking adventure in Japan.나는 오쿠 재팬으로 결정하였는데, 이곳은 혼자서 여행을 다니는 사람들에게 특화되어 있는 회사이다. 관심사에 맞는 하이킹 스케줄을 만들고 난 후 일본에서 하게 될 8일 간의 모험을 위해 한국을 떠나게 되었다.

Imagine a full day of hiking along quiet, verdant for-est trails. You arrive at your Japanese inn sometime in late afternoon. Escorted to your room, you are given a robe and directions to the inn’s hot tub. The hot water, piped in from a local hot spring, inevita-bly melts away your cares and any soreness from the day’s hike. “This is the life,” you tell yourself, knowing full well that a heavenly Japanese dinner and comfortable night on the tatami floor still await you.고요하고 녹음이 우거진 숲의 길을 따라 온 종을 하이킹을 하는 하루를 상상해보라. 늦은 오후의 어느 때에는 일본식 여관에 도착하게 될 것이다. 에스코트를 받아 방으로 도착하면 유카타와 여관에 딸린 온천으로 가는 길을 안내받게 될 것이다. 지역의 온천수에서 끌어올린 뜨거운 물이 모든 근심걱정과 온종일 걸린 하이킹에서 얻게 된 근육통을 씻은 듯이 없애줄 것이다. 근사한 일본식 저녁만찬과 다다미 바닥에서의 편안한 하룻밤이 기다리고 있는 것을 알게 되는 순간에는 “이런 게 인생이지” 라고 되뇌이게 될 것이다.

for fans of Japanese food, the dishes prepared with pride in the inns along the Nakasendo are mesmerizing to the palate. I am reminded of the lyrics from the Eurythmics’s hit, “Sweet dreams are made of this. Who am I to disagree? I travel the world and the seven seas. Everybody’s looking for something.” Well, this was exactly what I was looking for.일본음식 애호가에게는 나카센도를 따라 자리잡은 여관들의 자부심을 담아 준비한 요리들이 입맛을 사로잡아 당신의 넋을 빼놓을 것이다. 나는 Eurythmics의 히트송의 가사 한 구절을 떠올리게 되었다. “달콤한 꿈을 이것으로 이루어져 있지. 내가 뭐라고 동의하지 않겠어. 나는 세계를 여행하고 있지. 모두들 무엇인가를 찾고 있어.” 글쎄.. 이 것이 내가 찾고 있던 바로 그것이었다.


As promised by Oku Japan, a package was await-ing me at the front desk when I checked into my Kyoto hotel. It contained everything I needed for the walk: maps, train tickets and information guides. After leisurely exploring Kyoto for two days, I took my first train to Nakatsugawa, then a bus to Magome, the final stop on the line. The set-ting greeted me like an old friend. I had seen this medieval Japanese street scene motif in many photos. A wide-stoned path that meandered gently up hill welcomed me. I abided letting myself slip into the moist air, the low clouds and the mysteri-ousness of the Nakasendo Trail.오쿠 재팬이 약속했던 대로 교토 호텔에 체크인을 할 때 프론트 데스크에 패키지가 나를 기다리고 있었다. 지도, 기차표, 가이드북 등등 하이킹에 필요한 모든 것들이 패키지에 들어 있었다. 이틀 동안 가볍게 교토를 돌아보고 난 후 나카츠가와로 향하는 첫번째 기차를 탔다. 그리고 노선의 종점인 마고메를 향해 버스를 타고 갔다. 그 곳은 마치 오랜 친구처럼 나를 맞아 주었다. 수많은 사진에서 이 중세 일본 거리 풍경의 모티브를 봐 왔다. 구불구불하게 언덕을 향해 올라가는 넓찍한 돌이 깔린 길이 나를 반겨주었다. 촉촉한 공기와, 낮은 구름, 나카센도 트레일의 신비로움 속으로 몸을 던졌다.

July, they tell me, is a quiet time on the trail. It’s often rainy and children are still in school. That explains why I had the trail largely to myself. Other than meeting a father and son from Seattle on that first rainy day, the trail was my own. Well, that is, if you don’t count the brown bears and monkeys that inhabit the mountains along the trails. I didn’t see either species, although bear bells dotted the trail. Not one for surprise bear encounters, I rang each bell vigorously, then loudly sang favorite tunes from elementary school as I walked along the trail. 오쿠재팬에서 말해주기를 7월은 트레일의 비수기라고 했다. 비도 자주 내리고, 어린이들은 학기 중이었다. 왜 이 길을 혼자서 널찍이 쓸 수 있었는지 설명이 되었다. 비오는 첫 날에 시애틀에서 온 부자를 만난 것 외에 트레일은 전부 내 차지였다. 트레일을 따라 있는 산에서 살고 있는 갈색곰과 원숭이와 마주치지 않는 다면 말이다. 나는 둘 중 어느 것도 보지 않았다. 하지만 곰을 만났을 때 치는 종은 길 곳곳에 놓여져 있었다. 곰을 맞닥뜨리게 되어 놀란 것은 아니지만, 나는 종을 열심히 치고 길을 걸어가며 초등학교에서 배운 노래 중 가장 좋아하는 노래를 큰 소리로 불렀다.

That first day’s final destination was the magical town of Tsumago. Its curved main street, lined on both sides by dark 2-story wooden buildings, was quiet and se-ductive. I found my inn at the far end and I was the only guest.첫번째 날의 최종 목적지는 마법같은 마을 츠마고였다. 대로 양가에는 어두운 색의 2층 목재 건물이 줄지어 있었고, 휘어진 대로는 조용하고 고혹적이었다. 길 끝에 있었던 내 여관에는 내가 유일한 손님이었다.

The trails provide contemplative space. Each hill, each bend reveals a secret offering, an inscribed stone, a view, a shrine, a story from its past. They compliment-ed the almost fictional characters I met at night at the inns. The staff, inn keepers, and servers, most of whom were dressed in traditional Japanese attire, were like characters in a play I was part of. I needed only to let go and be carried away by the happenings as they unfolded.


길은 사색할 수 있는 공간을 마련해주었다. 매 언덕마다, 매 굽이진 곳마다 뭔가 새겨진 돌, 풍경, 신사, 옛날 이야기 등 무언가 비밀스러운 것을 발견할 수 있었다. 그러한 것들은 밤에 여관에서 만나게 되는 거의 가공의 캐릭터들을 칭찬하는 내용을 담고 있었다. 스탭들. 여관의 종업원, 일본의 전통 복장을 하고 있는 대부분의 사람들은 내가 참여하고 있는 연극의 인물들 같았다. 나는 단지 길을 갈 뿐이고, 길이 하나씩 선사하는 해프닝을 겪으며 계속해서 길을 가게 되는 듯 했다.

Each day’s destination Nagiso & Nojiri, Yabuhara, Narai, Hirasawa, Karuizawa and Yokokawa, in turn, revealed its own unique personality. I could almost sense the excitement of the entertainers and mer-chants who once walked the trail. The low clouds that clung to the mountains added a sense of mystery, remi-niscent, no doubt, of the dangers that confronted those early travelers from the Japanese royal class as they walked the trail town to town during the 16th century hoping to avoid encounters with bandits and thieves.하루하루의 목적지인 나기소 및 노지리, 야부하라, 나라이, 히라사와, 카루이자와, 요코카와는 차례대로 각각의 독특한 특성을

보여 주었다. 나는 한 때 같은 길을 걸었던 광대와 상인들의 신이 났던 기분을 거의 느낄 수 있었다. 산에 걸려 있던 낮은 구름이 미스테리함을 더 했다. 의심할 바 없이 일본 귀족층의 초기 여행자들이 16세기에 마을에서 마을로 길을 따라 걸을 때 맞닥뜨릴 수도 있는 위험을 연상시켰다. 그리고 그들은 강도와 도둑과의 만남을 피하기만을 바랄 뿐이었다.

My encounters along the Nakasendo were more magi-cal. A good decision indeed to walk the Nakasendo.나카센도를 따라 만나게 되는 우연함은 마법과도 같은 일이었다. 나카센도를 걷기로 한 것은 정말 좋은 결정이었다.

a pEaCEFUl ESCapE FroM THE CITY

After our shopping trip to Seomun Market, we headed for the Arboretum. I have already been there once with a friend and a photography group so I was familiar with the area. Parking was a breeze since it was a weekday and the crowds were manageable. It was a sunny af-ternoon and we proceeded to enjoy the day. 서문시장에서 쇼핑을 마친 후, 우리는 수목원으로 향했다. 이미 친구와 사진동호회와 함께 한 번 가본 적이 있어 그 주변을 알고 있었다. 평일인 덕분에 주차는 식은 죽 먹기였고 사람들은 그럭저럭 있는 편이었다. 화창한 오후에 우리는 그 시간을 즐기기 위해 발걸음을 옮겼다. Mom especially enjoyed the array of bonsai trees on display. There were several under a protective green house and some outside in large pots and elevated displays. Most were just green non-budding trees, but I was partial to those that had flowering capabilities. My personal favorite was the red miniature Japanese maple tree.

Greenhouses were separated by what climate was optimum for that category of plants. There was the tropical house that included a papaya plant with a couple of fruit bearing branches. Orange and lemon citrus plants were also among this group.온실은 식물의 종류에 따라 가장 적합한 기후로 구분해 놓았다. 그 곳에는 열매가 달린 가지까지 자란 파파야를 포함한 열대기후온실도 있었다. 오렌지와 레몬 같은 감귤류도 이 온실에 있었다. The main greenhouse had the cacti and desert lov-ing plants. Some were so twisted and scary looking that my son was scared to go near it. Others were beautiful even with their spikey thorn-like branches. It always amazes me how these plants can survive in dry land with barely any water for nutrients.

The weather soon turned for the worse and the clouds started to roll in, so we decided to head back to the car. I’ve been teaching for 10 years in Korea and while much of that time has been pretty stellar, I know that the time to leave and return to Canada has arrived because if Korea were to be my reality for the next de-cade, I would most definitely regret it. It’s not without trepidation that I make this move and truth be told, I actually feel pretty terrified about the whole thing. I decided to harness this terror into something positive and to write a book to help myself, along with a whole bunch of other teachers who are also thinking about going back home but are at a bit of a loss as for what to do to keep a roof over their heads. In order to do this, I surveyed 55 old friends and random Internet strang-ers to find out their best advice to make the transition smoothly, as well as find out what they are doing for work. A Large Pool of Money: Get One!

All 55 people I surveyed mentioned the need to have a large pool of money when you return to your home country because you’ll have to buy things like a car or new clothes or pay for damage deposits on an apart-ment, etc. More importantly, it may take months to find work—in some cases it took people 3+ months to find something. It took a few people far longer—6+ months until they found something that wasn’t terrible.

Think you Have Enough Money? Maybe Not

Those that had significant amounts of money ($20,000+) were able to ease into their return home and didn’t experience a lot of stress during the process. They had time to spend a couple of months looking for the job they really wanted instead of what they were forced to do because of financial constraints. However, those with less tha $5,000 had an extremely difficult time and seriously regretted not having more.

“Save your hard-earned money for your eventual re-turn home. I wish I had saved more!”

충분한 돈을 가지고 있다고 생각하는가? 아마도 아닐 것이다.

A Plan: Get One!

The people who were most successful in returning to their home countries did one or more of the following things before they ever left the country they were teaching in:

- had the qualifications necessary for a very specific job path at home (certified teacher was a popular option)- had already applied for a lot of jobs- were accepted into an educational program- had at least one back-up plan, and sometimes 2 or 3- researched the job market extensively

certain important tasks such as transportation, housing, and job hunting.”

Remember that good plans take time, so it’s best to make the decision about whether or not you’re going to stay where are or return home early enough-per-haps 6 months before your contract finishes. Then, allow yourself enough time to do research, apply for grad school, prepare your resume, or whatever you need to do.

Some Final ThoughtsIf you’re tired of teaching abroad, it really is possible to make the transition home, especially if you have a pool of money and a well thought-out plan. Although some of the people I surveyed struggled, in the end, they all made it and are now living sustainable kinds of lives, doing some kind of work that they’re mostly happy with. Even though it was pretty difficult, only a couple people regretted going back home and very few have any plans to leave their home countries.

마지막으로 나누는 생각들외국에서 가르치는 일이 지겨워졌다면 집으로 돌아가는 것도 가능한 일이다. 특히 충분한 자금과 심사숙고한 계획이 있다면 말이다. 설문조사를 했던 사람들 중 몇몇 고생한 사람들이 있긴 하지만 모두들 이겨내고 지금은 잘 살고 있으며 행복을 느낄 수 있는 일을 하고 있다. 적응이 매우 어렵긴 했지만 몇몇 사람들만이 집으로 돌아온 것을 후회하고 있으며 다시 떠나려고 계획한 사람들은 거의 없다.

Between advanced and quality services provided, low cost of visit, and excellent translation services, you’ll be hard-pressed to find better medical service. Not convinced? Here’s why you should make Daegu you’re one-stop shop for medical services.

Physical check-ups are essential for early diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Daegu provides the best medical staff and equipment while ensuring convenience and competitive pricing. A basic screen-ing may include anything from consultation, blood pressure check, vision checks, hearing tests, PfT, Abdominal Ultrasonography, ECG, chest x-rays, blood test, urine analysis, and more. Each hospital provides different services depending on your needs. Other languages are available upon request. Results are available within seven days and can also be sent via mail or email. Pa-tients can receive a lunch voucher to be redeemed at the hospital’s cafeteria.

• Fatima Hospital

Provides an English and Russian speaking staff. Test results are available in English but can also be trans-lated to Chinese, Japanese, or Russian upon request. Although diagnosis time and cost may vary depend-ing on the condition of patients and services they would like provided, the cost of a general health screening is 400,000 KRW for men and 450,000 KRW for women. The check-up will last approximately three hours with an extra hour added for any addi-tional check-ups.

A total of 9,871 foreign patients visited Daegu’s local hospitals and clinics in 2014, a 35% increase from 2013 alone. Most of these patients hail from the United States, but from 2013 to 2014 there has been a 56.3% increase in Chinese patients, an 83.4% in-crease in Russian patients, a 94.1% increase in Jap-anese patients, and a 166.1% increase in Indonesian patients to Daegu. Daegu is quickly becoming one of the best cities in providing medical services to foreigners.

Over the past year, I’ve had the distinct pleasure of joining some of the classes offered at the Daegu YMCA. They offer a variety of classes (free and paid) to help foreigners learn the Korean language and culture, including cooking, music, dance, art and language courses.

I’ve taken two cooking classes (kimchi and mandu) and two art classes (painting and bookbinding). The cooking classes were completely free and both were, to a degree, hands-on. Most of the work for making kimchi, including soaking the cabbage and allowing the sauce to blend well, was prepared ahead of time by the instructors. In the actual class, we discussed the recipe (which they provided to us) and then proceeded to season the cabbage as instructed by our teachers. It was quick work, but each of us had the opportunity to prep our own 1/4 head of cabbage and learn how to best get the sauce in every nook and cranny!We then bagged up our finished product (about a gallon-size bag, and were able to take it home! the

Two months ago, I took the mandu class and it was much more hands-on. We chopped and strained the all the vegetables and practiced making the mandu in a couple different shapes. We then learned how to prop-erly steam and fry the mandu to perfection. Although we didn’t receive a written recipe, the translator told us what each ingredient was and we had the opportu-nity to ask as many questions as we wanted. After all, you really make mandu to-taste and some people pre-fer a different meat-to-vegetable ratio. In the end, we all tried our hands at making Kimchi and Pork Mandu and Veggie and Pork Mandu….and we feasted on the finished product!

In September of this year, I joined my 2nd art class at the Daegu YMCA. My first class was Minhwa (tradi-tional painting) and the second was a Hanji (traditional paper) bookbinding class.

The painting class cost about 55k won (to cover the materials) and lasted 6 weeks. Our fantastic teacher took us step-by-step through the process of making these gorgeous paintings! This class is usually offered twice a year (winter/spring) so keep an eye out for the next intake!

The hanji bookbinding class took four weeks and the only fee was for the supplies (35k won)-well worth it! Each week we made a different book, each with unique paper and binding techniques, all with the help of our lovely teacher. I absolutely loved this class and am glad to have 4 Christmas presents to send home!

Think of this artsy street as the “Insa-dong” of Daegu. As you walk along, you’ll see art galleries, studios and antique shops. You can stop in shops to buy art or just to browse through the incredible work of local artists. While you can enjoy exhibitions throughout the year, this street is particularly busy every October with the Bongsan Art festival. Another highlight of this area is the Bongsan Culture and Art Hall where you can catch some performances and small-scale exhibitions.

The late Kim Kwang-suk, a famous Korean folk sing-er-songwriter who was popular in the 1980s, is still admired by many Korean music lovers today. You can definitely feel the love for the late artist as you stroll down the 350 meter long street that was designed to remember and honor him. The walls of this street are plastered with murals of Kim and you can hear his mu-sic faintly playing as you stroll along. On the weekends, you can visit a flea market here and there are also sev-eral famous restaurants in the area such as Daehan News, Two Bbul, Pic&iq (picnic), Percent, Barazi, Ga-jok and Laura’s Mill.

Subway (Sinnam Station of Green Line)To find “Yangmal alley (socks alley),” take subway line two to Sinnam station and take exit number one. Right after you exit, look for an alley on your right. Parking buildingThe eight story parking ramp is located between Dong-san shopping district and sector two. There are two entrances and the ramp can hold 660 cars. It costs 500 won to park for 30 min-utes with a 250 won charge for each additional ten minutes of parking. You can pay at an automated machine on the first floor. Credit cards and transportation cards are accepted.

Parking lotThere are two sections that hold up to 350 cars. It can hold 60 cars in the Dongsan shopping district and 50 cars in the base-ment of each of the five additional sectors.

ATMYou can find them at various places around Seomun market. There is also one located on the first floor of the parking ramp.

Information CenterIt is located right next to the entrance of the parking ramp. You will see a sign that says, “Information Center”. Inside, you can collect all the information you need about tourist destinations in Daegu as well as more information about Seomun Market.

1. Most stores close around six or seven p.m. (It varies by store and some may be open later)2. Bring cash! These vendors do not accept credit cards. So hit the ATM before you shop here.3. Compare prices at different shops. There are many vendors that sell similar products here so shop around and consider your options before buying.4. Restrooms are located at the top of each sector or between floors.

Established in the Goryeo Dynasty, Seomun market was one of the three major markets during the Joseon dynasty. After the Korean War, a large linen and cotton wholesale and retail market was created. The textile industry is the traditional industry of Daegu. Seomun market is a lively place for locals and tourists alike that truly showcases an original part of Daegu culture. You can find an assortment of food as well as affordable, well-made market goods.

Dongsan Shopping DistrictYou can find dishes and flatware in the basement. On the first floor, you can find baby goods, children’s clothing and many more household items. On the second floor and above, you’ll find cute clothing for a reasonable price.

Distrcit OneThe first floor sells linen and silk fabrics, and the second floor sells Korean made clothing and luxury bedding. This spot is vis-ited by Koreans of all ages taking a look at the colorful, luxurious fabrics.

District TwoThis building burned down in 2005 but was recentlyrebuilt and revived with a brand new facility. In the basement, you can grab a bite to eat. They sell things like strawberry cakes, pork belly, Jajangmyeon, Mon-na-ni Tteok-bokki and grilled bul-gogi. The first floor is retail and clothing and the third and fourth floors sell fabric. This spot is always popular for Daegu locals, but receives an influx of foreign shoppers in October buying fab-ric for Halloween costumes.

District fourDistrict four is a general store. On the first floor, you will find a random mix of tuxedos, garments, crafts and traditional Korean souvenirs. You can buy silk fabrics and bedding on the second floor.

District fiveIt’s located at the outer corner of Seomun market but is always packed with people. On the first floor, you’ll see shoppers buying dishes either for commercial use or for their own homes. The second floor sells clothing.

AJin Shopping DistrictThis place is ideal for artists and designers, “Home-fashion” crafts and it sells hand-made clothing. Along the streets of this district, you can find various tools and materials such as buttons, feathers, ribbons, zippers and laces. “Mending Street” is lined up and down with sewing machines and seamstresses and tailors who have been sewing for over ten years – another special feature of the Jin Shopping District.

Myungpoom PlazaMyungpoom Plaza is a fashion center located in Seomun mar-ket. The first floor sells jewelry, accessories, imported goods, shoes, dishes and baby goods. The second and third floors sell underwear and women’s clothing. This is a one-stop shop plaza with a little bit of everything

Dried Sea food DistrictThe dried sea food district of Seomun Market sells dried fruits, nuts and (of course) an uncountable amount of dried sea food. In fact, 60 to 70 percent of all dried foods sold in Daegu are sold here. An added bonus is that you can buy the goods for about 20 or 30 percent cheaper here than you can at the market. To get here, walk past the arched structure and you will see it on your left.
