Chiedozie Ogbene keeps Nemo Rangers alive
Saturday, August 15, 2015
By Barry Coughlan Irish Examiner
Nemo Rangers 1-11 Valley Rovers 1-11: Nemo Rangers have made a speciality of winning Cork County U21 A titles, being the dominant force with 13 wins, including a couple in the last three years.
Amongst their victims have been Valley Rovers, whom they knocked off a lone championship perch (2013 winners) in last year’s semi-final.
In last night’s decider at Páirc Ui Rinn, it was a chance for the Valleys to gain revenge. Victory was not to be for either side though and a pulsating contest ended with both sides level in what was probably a fair result.
From the off there was plenty of excitement, and Nemo got the opening scores, a couple of points from Kevin and Alan O’Donovan. Valley Rovers hit back with points from Jack Murphy and Eoin O’Reilly but Nemo’s Chiedozie Ogbene made all the difference with a smashing goal as he finished Conor Gould’s through ball.
Billy Crowley might have had claims for a Valleys penalty as he bore down on goal. Seconds later, Nemo saw Valley keeper David Lynch make a brilliant save but Conor Horgan knocked over the rebound for a point. O’Reilly got his second point to again leave a goal between the sides. Nemo lived dangerously in the 16th minute when Jack Murphy’s shot was saved by Michael Aodh Martin. Two minutes later Conor Horgan and Danny O’Sullivan exchanged points.
Nemo defenders got in the way of goalward shots four times in quick succession and Valley had to be happy with a point from Jack Murphy to reduce the Nemo lead to just two points. Tadgh O’Brien cut the deficit further and then Murphy set pulses racing with a
brilliant individual goal to give his side the lead for the first time with 24 minutes on the clock. The sides had a further point apiece with Valley holding the initiative at the break, 1-8 to 1-6.
Two early points from Conor Horgan brought the sides level and it took Valleys 10 minutes of the second-half to register their first score, a pointed free from Murphy, before O’Reilly got another immediately afterwards to restore the two-point lead.
A third point, this time from Darragh Murphy, had Valley Rovers three points to the good by the middle of that second period and Nemo’s luck was out in the 46th minute when their attempt on goal was repelled by a determined Valley Rovers defence.
Man of the match Ogbene sparked a Nemo revival when he struck for two points and substitute Ian Dorney had another to draw the sides level again. There were thrills from there to the finish, with both sides threatening to get the winner but neither had quite the composure to see this game out
Scorers for Nemo Rangers:
C Ogbene 1-2, C Horgan 0-5 (0-2 frees), K O’Donovan 0-2, I Dorney, A O’Donovan 0-1 each.
Scorers for Valley Rovers:

Under 9 On Friday 14th August our U9 footballers played in two exhibition matches at half time in the U21 County Final against their Nemo Rangers counterparts. This was a great experience for the lads to play under lights in front of a big crowd. The boys performed well both on the field and off it as they provided very loud support from the stands during the U21 match. The following played in the exhibition matches: Sam Browne, Luke Casey, Scott Johnson Collins, Gary Cremin, Billy Cronin, Seanie Crowe, Billy Curtin, Niall Daly, Liam Dineen, Roan Gilli, Neil Hennessy, Luke Humphreys, Alex Hurley, Ben Keane, Matthew Kelleher, Sean T Kenneally, Samuel Linehan, Oisin McCarthy, Shane O’Connell, Anthony Slattery.
Valley Rovers 4 - 07 Kinsale 6 - 13.
Valleys Rovers were beaten in the West Cork ladies
u16 semi final played in Brinny last Thursday 13th Aug.
Rovers started well in the first half playing attacking
football and with the assistance of a slight breeze took
the game to Kinsale. Rovers had been beaten by Kinsale
in the earlier league stages of the competition but it
gulf on that occasion could not be seen last evening.
Rovers lead at half time 3 - 06 to 3 - 05, giving the
eventual winners a scare.
Under 12 Valley Rovers 8-6 Aghabullogue 5-11 The U12's second team finished off their football league campaign with a fine win over Aghabullogue. While not qualifying for the final, the improvement shown by the players over the year has been a joy to watch. Having qualified for the final of the hurling and coming third in the football the players can take great credit. Well done everyone.
10 Hurling Our u10 hurlers travelled to Cobh for the Johnnie Leahy Tournament on Saturday last. We had 2 teams who took on teams from Cobh, Sarsfields & Carrigtwohill. Each team played 3 matches and we played some really good hurling. We won 5 out of 6 matches and it was great to see a competitive edge to these games which the lads really enjoyed. All the lads received medals and refreshments after the tournament. Our thanks to Cobh for the invitation and the hospitality. The following players played in the tournament Adam Lynch, Callum Fennelly, Callum Reardon, Ciaran Hoey, Connor Desmond, Daniel Lynch, Danny O Brien, David Carthew, Declan Cronin, Enda Manning, Enda Muldoon, Eoin Guinane, Kevin Dart O'Flynn, Kieran Kelleher, Luke O'Sullivan, Matthew Woods, Ray Snapes, Seán Mac an tSaoi, Ted McGrath, Troy Young

On the restart of the second half Kinsale started to
create and more importantly take more chances than
Rovers were getting and went into a lead which Rovers
couldn't peg back but never gave up fighting to the end,
finishing strongly albeit too late. They gave a great
display of heart and determination and now take this
massive improvement into a county competition
coming up in a few weeks time. Team:

Our U8 ladies footballers played two games against
Clonakilty last Wednesday night. Great skills were
shown by everyone with all our girls showing great
improvements in their play. Training continues
Wednesday nights from 6:00 to 7:00pm.
Reminder to all our girls to sell their Golden Goal tickets
and return money at the next training session.

Fixtues: Round 4 Senior B Ch'ship v Clonakilty Sunday
Aug 23rd venue and time to be decided.
Valley Rovers play Clonakilty in their final round robin game in the Ch'ship. With two draws and a win from the first three rounds Valleys need a win or draw to progress to the Semi Final of the competition. The two sides met in last years Semi Final which Clon won so Valleys are eager to amend this defeat
This Saturday the under 9s, 10s and 11 camogie girls had were give some words of wisdom, and put through their paces by Dublin camogie star and current Leinster long puck champion Elaine Gallery. A great morning was had and Elaine gave great coaching to all 31 girls and the girls showed immense interest in a good Q&A, asking loads if questions. Many thanks to Elaine for giving her time.

You might remember a few months ago we appealed
to people to sign up to the bone marrow register as
one of our parishioners Sean Mac Seoin was in need of
a transplant. We are delight to report Sean has
received a transplant and is presently making a good
recovery. Seán has contacted us and asked to post the
following thank you message. We wish Seán well in his
recovery.
Sean’s Message:
I would like to thank all the members of Valley Rovers
who supported the appeal to sign up to the bone
marrow register earlier this year. I had a second
recurrence of non-hodgkins lymphoma in Nov 2014
and at the time needed chemotherapy again followed
by a bone marrow transplant. Two months ago, in
June, I had the transplant. The unrelated donor was a
26 year old German. I am half way through the post
transplant treatment now. Thank you to the many
people in Innishannon and Cork who have supported
my family - Ann, Aisling, Mary and Áine - while I was in
isolation in James's hospital in Dublin and now living
beside the hospital in Dublin.
I would appeal to the 18-45 year olds to continue to
donate blood regularly for current cancer patients at
CUH and other hospitals.
One day a patient beside me had to wait for platelets
as the blood bank had none after a bank holiday
weekend. Platelets only last 5 days. A very willing
donor was called in urgently to St Finbarr's hospital and
his platelets were delivered by late afternoon to CUH
to the sick patient on chemotherapy.
18-45 year olds can also sign up to the bone marrow
register at WWW.GIVEBLOOD.IE for future leukaemia,
lymphoma or myeloma patients needing a transplant.
They can also sign up when donating blood at St.
Finbarr's hospital or at a mobile clinic.
I am so grateful of this chance of a return to long term
good health. I appreciate how good Valley Rovers and
the community of Innishannon is in supporting each
other and appreciate all the support and prayers we
have received from people throughout West Cork.
Go raibh míle buíochas daoibh go léir.
Sean Mac Seoin
