Number 1 A Coursebook in English is planned and prepared by 22 university instructors and professors who have been teaching English at various schools and universities all around Turkey and the world.

This coursebook is just a beginning. What follows this first step is a family of coursebooks constituting a more in depth study of English as used in many social locales and for different purposes.

Number 1 A Coursebook in English pays attention to both the mechanics of English such as those explicit grammar rules and word stress while paying closer attention to the use of English as it occurs amongst various groups of native and non-native speakers of English.

The coursebook aims to develop all four skills, namely, Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing in a connected manner. While doing that, students' motivation and development of their autonomy is given special emphasis. Short readings, controlled writing, matching the verbal to the visual by using many photographs and drawings, putting sentences and dialogues in order, and sentence completion activities characterize the methodology of Number 1 A Coursebook in English.

On behalf of 22 writers who have made this coursebook possible, I would like to extend our best wishes to our students and colleagues in their language learning and teaching journey.

I'm overweight. I want to lose weight so much. Some friends and I are getting together to support each other but we don't live in the same city. And now, I am the only one that doesn't have friend support in the same city. I have to lose 50 kilos. One of my friends is getting married in May, and I want to look so beautiful. I'm tired of being a fat girl with a nice face. I have to be slim and healthy. Please help me with this.

Hi. 1 can understand how you feel. Of course you can look slim and beautiful but you have to change your eating habits. You have to eat vegetables and drink a lot of water. You have to walk and run everyday. You have to try weight-loss pills, too. You can take three pills a day. Before having breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Carol, I don't agree with you. She doesn't have to take weight-loss pills. They are not healthy. She has to do sports and eat healthy food. She has to be careful about eating sweets and she has to see a doctor as well. She can easily lose weight with the help of a doctor. She has to change her life-style first.

1. Look at the table on health statistics. What are the obesity rates for the United States, Germany and Turkey?

2. Is obesity a problem in Turkey? Why/ why not?

3. What should we eat to have a healthy body?

About 14% (percent) of people in the world are overweight. These obese people are one big problem of the world because they have an unhealthy life style. They eat food with unhealthy fat. They eat unhealthy food, but do not exercise to burn calories. In the world, children are getting obese, too. The reason for that is so clear!

They spend too much time in front of the TV and computer. With no exercise or physical activity, they start getting bio! Unfortunately, they do not go out and play with friends. They play video games, watch TV and eat junk- unhealthy food like potato chips. In the United States, 80 percent of commercials during children's TV programs are for food. In four hours of Sunday morning cartoons, there are nearly 150 advertisements selling iunk food.

On the other hand, in Japan and South Korea, the obesity rate is only 3.2%. Especially on the Japanese island of Okinawa, there aren't any overweight people. The Okinawan diet is so low in sugar and salt. So, their food is low in calories. Okinawans eat fruit, vegetables and fish. They usually drink green tea and water. Okinawan people live more than 100 years.

FASHION! FOR EVERYONE...

In the 1960s, there was a revolution in fashion. For the first time, teenagers had good jobs and more money to spend on clothes. Young people became the leaders of fashion. Hair was important, too. For the first time, men had their hair long, like the Beatles. Sometimes girls' hair was even shorter than their boyfriends' hair!

Then in the late 60s and early 70s fashion changed again. Young women wore shorter skirts called minis, and high- heeled boots. This changed in the 70s, when skirts became longer. The look was more romantic and softer than in the 60s. Jeans became the'uniform'for men and women.

The 1980s saw another big change in fashion. Teenagers started the fashion for punk clothes and brightly-coloured hair styles.

But in the 90s, as now, things changed again. People were not following one style of fashion. We were much more creative and everyone wore whatever they felt the most comfortable or whatever they liked. Most people had trainers, and high-heeled shoes. And jeans were always popular. The widest trousers, Oxford Bags, were big in the 70s but wide-legged trousers were still fashionable, mainly for women. Drainpipes, the very narrow jeans of the 50s, became popular leggings we still see and use today.

But who knows what the future fashions will be? Fashions change so much.
