Brian’s Corner…….

Hi All GMilers,

HOU BENE HOU, HOU BENE HOU....was the mind set of most of our runners this long weekend. If you take the two oceans runners whom formed a good portion of our club athletes, and also our club long runs.

Firstly a huge congratulations to all our Two Oceans athletes, who completed the race. It was very nice to see the photos on the groups and also the fun that was had by all. The nicest photo in my opinion was the one with Johan and Edri van der Merwe, standing in the Chappies tunnel. I think the craziest photos were submitted by Johann Schoeman with Flip in the mix!. When seeing these photos it really reminds me of what a special bunch of people we are at Green Mile, and I sometimes wonder where the spirit that we have as a club has fallen away in other clubs. Its very hard to see that there are only a handful of clubs left that carry a good spirit.

This great club spirit was again seen at the club long runs, we had fantastic support cars, food and drinks over the weekend. If you had joined over the weekend you would have noticed this. On Friday we did the Irene route 30km in reverse, and I must add the last Cornwall hill climb was not so generous after all! On Saturday we did the easy 15km run around our club house and then on Sunday we tested the legs by doing the 511m elevation run. I did hear some chirps that I was not the most popular person because of the route on Sunday, but surely I can say the route has on-ly made you stronger!

You safety in these runs are of most important, and it was sad to see that Adri was knocked over by a car, in PVR on Friday's run. I need to please ask you guys to be careful on these runs, and always be on the lookout for traffic. It unfortunate that it had happened, but we are all very happy that the injury she sustained were minor of nature. Please wear your reflector gear in your run at night and the morning and be safe on the roads please.

So with only 67 days left till Comrades I can imagine so nervousness is beginning to settle in, you nervous of your kilometers you have done till date, scared of getting sick, still worried about nutrition ect. Well GMilers getting nerv-ous is part of the process, but most important is still being focused on your goals for Comrades and using that nerv-ous energy in your runs and programme laying ahead. If I can give you some advice, be pro active in your approach and not re-active, stay positive about all you long runs still laying ahead, join the club long runs to keep you motivat-ed, speak out and talk to you fellow members regarding how you feel and where you are in your training, use one another to motivate and encourage each other, to make it not only to the starting line of Comrades but also the fin-ish line. You have a big club base to utilize, with lots of Comrades experience, use that to your advantage, come to the workshops and hear how other people also feel and relate to it as well. We are here to support and help one another through the next few weeks ahead that will entails high mileage.

I would also like to ask our current members, whom had done Comrades before, to reach out to our novices, talk to them, ask them how they doing, and if you find them at a race, encourage them and pull them through, they are the ones who really need some special attention. Just remember how you felt as a novice and think of what you would have liked some experienced runners would have shared with you, and share that with the novices.

So what next on the running calendar, well this Sunday is the Irene Ultra 48km, then a smashing 13 days later is Los-kop Ultra 50km. So you thinking of racing? Uhmmmm well no! Why you might ask! well very easy another 14 days later you will do the club 60km long run on Comrades pace as a dress rehearsal for Comrades. If you would race any-one of the above and also do you 60km run, you will most certainly feel the effects of your actions at Comrades. So be clear in your expectations and what your goal is! Do you want to race a 48km or 50km and compromise your long run and Comrades? I want to warn you all, that racing had to be over and done with by Feb, March, all your runs are now only to be LSD runs, I am pleading with you to re-think your strategy on these races.

BRIAN’S CORNER….Continues….

If you qualifying this weekend, remember you have lots of time to do so, plan you race well, go with the positive mind set that you will make it, and leave all the pressure of qualifying in the car when you get out at the race. Enjoy your run and draw all the energy from the crowds of people along the way and water points. I wish you all the best.

If you have niggles, please sort them out now, you don't want to start Comrades with niggles. We have in our club Physio-therapists and Bio's talk to them and go see them, before your niggles become serious injuries. Also please remember the workshops being held on the 17th and 19th April.

Ok enough about Comrades...for now...Iron man is around the corner being held on the 15th April in Nelson Mandela Bay, and in our club we have Adri van den Heever who will be taking part this year. If you think Comrades is tough listen to this, the day is filled with some fun, first your start off with a 3.8km swim in the ocean, then an immediate 180km bike ride and then nicely rounded off with a 42.2km run...all done in one day!!! if you think us Comrades runners are crazy you have seen nothing yet!

I would like to applaud Adri in her dedication in terms of training for this event, and wish her all the best for April 15th. So if you se her at the club house or on the road, motivate her to keep going. Well done Adri!!!

So all GMilers, tonight we will be spoilt with a visit from Charne Bosman, whom you all know came 3rd this weekend at the Two Oceans marathon and won comrades in 2016.

Wishing you a great short week ahead.

SUBSTITUTION PROCESS OPENED ON MONDAY, 26 MARCH

Having a second chance makes you want to work even harder.” – Tia Mowry Aspirant #Comrades2018 runners now have another chance to secure their spot on the start line of The Ultimate Human Race on Sunday, 10 June 2018. Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) Race Director, Rowyn James says, “Athletes who were unable to enter the race during the official entry period last year now have another oppor-tunity to be part of the great event, thanks to the Substitution process which opens on Monday.” The Substitution Rule allows for a runner who has not entered to substitute an entrant who has withdrawn, or intends to withdraw from the 2018 Comrades Marathon.

The Comrades Marathon Substitution Process runs for a full month, opening on Monday, 26 March 2018 and closing on Wednesday, 25 April 2018. The cost of the Substitution application is R200. The Substitution rule is applicable to all entrants including South African, Rest of Africa and International on a like for like basis i.e.

• An International entrant can only substitute with an International entrant;

• For the first time, athletes from Rest of Africa (ROA) will be able to substitute with SA runners or other Rest of Africa entrants; and

• A South African entrant can substitute with a South African entrant or Rest of Africa entrant. Prospective substitutes are encouraged to do their applications online. Alternatively, they may send their com-pleted applications via email to [email protected] or hand-deliver them to Comrades House in Pietermaritz-burg. Please do not post forms.

James has advised potential substitutes to not pay inflated amounts for a substitute entry, saying, ‘The CMA is against the practice of withdrawing athletes charging the substitute runner extortionate amounts for their entry. The 2018 Comrades entry fee was R460 for local athletes and this should be a guide. We look forward to a phe-nomenal race day for our athletes and supporters.’ The completed application forms as specified in the Substitution Rule must reach the CMA office by 25 April 2018. There will be no extension of this deadline and no postal applications will be accepted. For more details, please click through to www.comrades.com
