Micah 6:8 and its application inthe Contemporary ContextMicah’s moral and social imperative: thePCC theme for 2012(A paper presented at the 50th Anniversary of the Pacific Council of Churches, Malua)

‘He has showed you, O man,what is good. And what does theLord require of you? To actjustly and to love mercy and towalk humbly with our God’. God’s will for Israel/Us isclear, certain and non-negoti-able; do justice, love mercy, andwalk humbly with our God. Jus-tice is something that we do,work for, and seek to realise. Itis not an abstract notion that weconceptualize in our heads orfantasize about in our dreams.Justice must have a human facewhich we co-create with God.Devoid of practical manifesta-tion, justice loses its meaningand significance. Its conceptual scope embracesas well the notions of kindnessand equality for all, particularlythe weak and the powerless who- against their will - are made tosuffer the exploitation of themighty and the powerful. Kind-ness has to do with love, loyaltyand faithfulness, especially inrelationships (husband/wife,friend/friend, God/humanity).As a relational concept, kindnessdemands relationships to be re-lationships of faithfulnessgrounded in, governed and mo-tivated by love. There should beno coercion or manipulation orthreat or fear of any shape orform. We are called to walk humbly/carefully/circumspectly withGod - putting God first in ourjourney and making Him our

contant companion. ‘Don’t walkbefore me, I may not follow.Don’t walk behind me, I may notlead. Just walk beside me, andbe my friend’.

But how? For PCC going into the future,the question is how can we walkhumbly with our God when Pa-cific leaders and systems are cor-rupt? (Fei Tevi in his Responseto our Prime Minister’s KeynoteAddress, Official Opening,Malua). The question is, howare we going to do justice, lovemercy, and walk humbly withour God in our contemporaryworld of multiple contexts (lo-cal, regional and global) withtheir multiform systems, institu-tions, philosophies, structures,conflicts, contradictions, imper-fections, blind prejudices, dis-missal of Christian beliefs, andso forth. Making this our maininterest, we need to face the realworld as it really is.

Our real world in polar oppo-sites Apart from the human mind’spreference for polar opposites tomake sense of human experi-ence, we need to affirm that ourworld is not thoroughly evil. Re-jecting an exasperated cynicismthat sees evil in everything andeverybody, a view often involv-ing the irrational projection ofthe evil inside ourselves ontoothers and thereby creating

scapegoats, we need to affirmthat, despite life’s woes, theworld is still a good place to livein. The collective challenge forall of us (expecially churches) isto make the world a better place.And in working for a betterworld, we thereby dismantle theromantic view of a world with-out problems, failings, and thelike. Couched in the theologi-cal terms, just as Grace has ahuman face, so also sin has a hu-man face (concretely embodied;manifested in countless forms,shapes and colours).

Making sense of our moraland social imperative in thisreal world The following discussion is asampling of the complex socialreality that PCC’s quest for jus-tice, love of mercy, and a hum-ble walk with God will inevita-bly confront, and which willchallenge PCC in a fundamen-tal manner, to make absolutelyclear its message and mission inboth word and deed.

Human history: colonization/decolonization/neo/internalcolonization Colonization (often based onan evolutionary theory of his-tory), then decolonizat ion(Helen Gardner, Malua), andnow neo/internal colonization(usually characterized by theemergence of a ‘postcolonialnational bourgeoisie’, Fanon) -we have to make sense of thewhole lot. In terms of thepostcolonial push, we may haveto deconstruct and then invertexisting structures and reorgan-ize our social relationships allover again. While that is war-ranted in certain cases, there isalways the danger of

deconstructing and invertingeverybody and everything sohastily so that, in the end, wedestroy the requisite foundationsof society as well. For us as Christians, we willhave to wrestle with the issue ofthe Bible as a colonial document(Asian theologies). If we acceptthat proposition, then we need toreorganize our theologicalmeanings and biblical state-ments accordingly. Our notionsof nationalism need to be testedagain, especially when national-ism is offered to the people torealize an ideology. The prob-lem is, when the life of an ideol-ogy is spent, the whole politicalstructure built upon it whithersaway as well. And so the peo-ple are left with nothing.

Politics and political systems Communism and the one-party state: (the evil of absolutepower of government withoutlimits); the denial of individualrights and liberties - this is com-mon language nowadays. Thenthere is democracy and the so-called rule of the majority; gov-ernment within prescribed lim-its, operating through the po-litico-legal institution of separa-tion of powers and a system ofchecks and balances curbing ab-solute power; the full exercise ofguaranteed rights and liberties -this is common language nowa-days as well. But even democracy itself isnot perfect; not only it is unfin-ished, it has its own inherentevils - the tyranny of the major-ity and the venom of anti-

majoritarianism, the use of rightsto justify and fuel anti-socialagendas, the evolution of mod-ern states into de facto corpora-tions, to name a few. In the areaof social justice, the questionmust be asked, why humanitythat was supposed to be enlight-ened since the 18th Century ‘in-stead of entering a truly humanstate, is sinking into a new kindof barbarism? (Horkheimer andAdorno). Disillusion with de-mocracy and its promise is notuncommon. In the words of aRussian’s sad reflection on theunfulfilled promise of democ-racy in Russia, ‘We really be-lieved the magical, beautifulword democracy. But a lot ofthings turned out not exactly theway we expected. We began toask ourselves what we spilledour blood for’ (reported in theSamoa Observer, Friday 19 Au-gust 2011, ‘20 years after Sovietfall, some look back longingly’)

Lawmaking, lawmakers, andlaws without morals Just recently, Samoa’s LawCommission proposed the abo-lition of Samoa’s sodomy andadultery laws (Samoa Observer).The justification is that these areno longer in keeping with soci-ety’s view of the world, espe-cially our understanding of theprivate/public distinction andpublic ethics. But not only isSamoa being increasingly priva-tized, the proposal reinforces thedomination of many legal sys-tems by the legal positivist no-tion that the law is whatever asovereign lawmaking power

deems to be so and that morality(based on the law of God and/orthe law of nature) does not be-long in court. The issue is that we have moralindifference in the guise of moralneutrality, producing laws with-out a moral conscience. If wego on doing this, we are mostcertainly going to land ourselvesin moral bankruptcy. In anycase, in the face of these chang-ing constructions of justice andwhat it means to be human, howare we going to fulfil Micah’smoral and social imperative, es-pecially the need for kindnesswhich demands relationships tobe relationships of faithfulnessand loyalty grounded in, gov-erned and motivated by love.

Economics: to be rich or poor,that is the question Criticism of socialism is wellrehearsed - stifling individualenterprise and creativity, and notallowing people to grow anddevelop as they should. And wehave capitalism as the alterna-tive, the free market system, andthe liberalization of everybodyand everything, including ourfinancial systems. As per Presi-dent Bush, ‘the free market is theway to go’ (TV Interview). Butas we all know, the more capi-talist we become, the quicker afew get rich while the masseslive either on or below the pov-erty line. The collapse of thebanking system in the US waspartly the result of governmentadopting a hands-off approachand leaving the financial marketsto control themselves in thename of liberalization. Perhaps, as PCC, we shouldpush for what may be called theexperimental-tinkering ap-proach to economics: ‘Nobody

so far has invented an economicsetup that satisfactorily balancesdecency and efficiency, but at themoment the most helpful alter-nat ive seems to begovernmentally controlled capi-talism plus welfare-statism (Hol-land, Sweden, Ireland). There isnothing sacred about either thefree market or about centralplanning: the proper balance be-tween the two is a matter of ex-perimental tinkering’ (Rorty).Perhaps, also, we need to beclear about the economic modelwe are advancing and should beadvocating as Christian churchesin the face of the evolution ofmodern governments into defacto corporations.

Our PCC Theology in the faceof our real world If we are to do justice, love andwalk humbly with our God inthis world (not the next one), weneed to face the matters dis-cussed above honestly, withcourage and conviction, pre-cisely because they challengeour basic beliefs and forms ofpractice to the very core. AsChritians ethics and morality arepushed more and more towardsthe edges of society, atheism andagnosticism are gaining moreand more free space in the cen-tre. For some, it is a matter ofchoice, the exercise of the rightto choose what to believe ac-cording to the dictates of one’sconscience. Alas, Christianity isbeing increasingly privatized!Perhaps, we need some‘deprivatizing of theology’(Metz). It is a very dangerous

situation indeed when Churchesand their theologies withdrawinto a ghetto-mentality thatshuns the world, glorifies differ-ence, and idolises purism - akind of ecclesiastical and theo-logical agnosticism. For us, ac-cording to the Micah imperative,doing jusice, loving others, andwalking humbly with our Godshould be done in both the pri-vacy of the home and in the pub-lic domain. We should carefullyguard against the possible di-vorce between theologicaltheory and theological practice.The immediate challenge is tomerge theory and praxis in sucha way that Christian life becomestruly and totally practical, a wayof life, a way of being and act-ing in the world. It is not just atheory of what the good life isor ought to be, but a mode ofoperation that is a process of

humanization which means, inmost if not all cases, liberation.It is not passive implication inhistory but active participation inhistory with a view to transform-ing history.
