Hello Daegu,

Fall has blown in quickly this year and we hope you all are enjoying the more moderate temperatures. We have another great issue set up for you this time around, including a piece about our favorite expat-run podcast called korea Underground. It’s edgy, trendy, and their drunken soju episode is not to be missed! Check out how they got their podcast off the ground and have over 14,000 downloads under their belt already. Also, our October issue wouldn’t be quite complete without a review and photo essay covering last month’s annual body painting festival held in Duryu Park. Local writer and photographer, Gary Lynn, shares his behind-the-scenes glimpse of the spectacular art that went into producing this internationally-recognized event.

After almost four years of searching for Bánh Mì sand-wiches in korea, I was excited that a place had opened in Daegu! The place is called Bánh Mì Rico, which is located near kyungpook National University. This small bistro fits about 14-18 people and is great for a casual bite. Upon entering, you’ll notice the large artwork illustrating the Bánh Mì ingredients.

On the right side is the front counter with a menu clear-ly displaying the Bánh Mì sandwich flavors and bever-ages. There’s a set menu option that includes French fries with basil and onion powder seasoning, and your choice of beverage. Beverages include the basic soda choices, a tea soda, various draft beer flavors, and the signature Vietnamese style coffee (a.k.a. Ca Phê).

Now onto the intricate details of how Bánh Mì Rico makes their sandwiches. These sandwiches borrowed the baguette from the French, but everything inside is an adventurous Vietnamese journey. All baguettes are prepared with rice flour, making it crispy on the out-side, and moist and chewy inside.

You’ll have the dilemma of choosing five kinds of meat: Egg, Pork, Chicken, Fishcake, and Beef. All of the Bánh Mì flavors come stuffed with an interesting blend of vegetables and sauces. The vegetables contain pick-led carrots and daikon, cucumbers, green chilies, and cilantro.

During my first visit to Bánh Mì Rico, my girlfriend and I ordered the Pork and Chicken Bánh Mì. The seasoning of the Pork Bánh Mì somewhat resembled bulgogi. It’s topped off with all of the vegetables and then drizzled with buttery mayonaise, red pepper siracha, and soy sauce. I could definitely taste the sweet pork and the soy sauce. However, the spiciness of the siracha is mostly drowned out by the pork’s sweetness. Great choice if you’re looking for contrasting flavors.

The Chicken Bánh Mì had a more balanced flavor. Chicken was tender and nicely seasoned, which brings out all of the flavors wonderfully. I could definitely taste the siracha and the buttery mayo this time. Also, the soy sauce’s flavor blended in more effortlessly. Under-neath the top piece of the baguette is a secret addition, the chicken pate. Pate is usually made with chicken liver and various spices. In my opinion, this was the best sandwich overall.

While there’s some aspects of the Bánh Mì that had korean influence, the sandwiches were good enough overall for another visit. For the second visit, four friends joined me. We ordered the previously ac-claimed Pork and Chicken, and also tested our taste buds with the Beef and Fishcake Banh Mi.

The Fishcake Bánh Mì seemed generously seasoned. I agreed with my friends’ assessment of the siracha and soy sauce being overwhelming, feeling like a punch to the face. But fishcake has a typically neutral taste, so this was somewhat expected. It’s an adequate sand-wich, but better suited for the bolder food connoisseur.

If you’re unsure about your journey into the Bánh Mì world, the beef is a nice starter. The meat was lightly seasoned, with gravy having an onion taste similar to the French Dip’s Au Ju sauce. It also has a bit of cheese mixed into the meat. We’re a bit surprised by the calm taste of the Beef Bánh Mì, but it was still a nice sandwich.

All of us agreed that the Pork and Chicken Banh Mi tasted the best overall. In our second visit, one of my friends and I noticed there were some other changes to the Bánh Mì recipe. Besides the more generous amount of siracha, the most noticeable omission was the chicken pate. I thought this was just a one-time occurrence, so I had to visit again.

On my third visit, the owner, Seung Jae kim was present. (I also ordered the Egg Bánh Mì, which was respectable).

Since I had the opportunity to talk with Seung Jae, I asked him about his reasons for opening a Bánh Mì shop in Daegu (his friend also helped translate an-

swers that he couldn’t fully express in English). He first encountered Bánh Mì while traveling in Vietnam, and he wondered why koreans haven’t caught onto these sandwiches, despite it’s deliciousness. So he became inspired to bring this intriguing sandwich to korea.

Then I asked him about his preparations of the Bánh Mì sandwiches. At that point, he admitted it was neces-sary to make changes to cater to the korean taste pal-ette. He stopped including the chicken pate because many koreans shunned the taste.

When Seung Jae first made the sandwiches, he tried his best to keep the Bánh Mì’s authentic taste. I have to give him credit for pioneering this delicacy into korea. Sometimes it takes time for people to be ac-customed to unfamiliar tastes. But he’s dedicated to his shop and wants to attract a more diverse customer base. He assured me that he’d give the options of chicken pate and sauce amounts in the future. It was a really nice gesture from the owner. He has a great thing going with a unique product, and I’m confident he’ll be able to attract more customers. I know I’ll come back again, eager for his promised authentic preparation options.

What happens when you put three expat teachers in korea, all in their 30s, in a room with a few bottles of soju and a microphone for 2 hours? No, not crank out 80s rock hits in a noraebang after an evening of devouring samgyeopsal and Cass. We’re talking about doing something a bit more productive: expat podcast-ing! Say hello to korea Underground, a Pohang-based expat-managed bi-weekly podcast (that’s a lot of con-secutive hyphens!) which has been on the air since the spring of 2014.만약 한국에서 한 방에 두 시간 동안 모두가 30대인 세 명의 원어민 교사를 소주 몇병과 함께 두면 무슨 일이 일어날까? 어느 저녁날 삼겹살과 카스를 잔뜩 먹고 난 후에 노래방에 가서 80년 락 히트송을 불러대는 이야기를 말하는 것이 아니다. 우리는 지금 조금 더 생산적인 것에 대해서 이야기하고 있다. 외국인들의 팟캐스트를 말하는 것이다! 2014년 봄부터 포함에서 외국인들에 의해 2주에 한 번씩 방송되는 팟캐스트, 코리아 언더그라운드를 소개한다.

After a run of unsatisfactory blogging attempts and finding inspiration in US filmmaker kevin Smith’s “Smodcast”, korea Underground founder Stephen Leavy “decided to stop making excuses and start re-cording. The conversational nature of our show makes it a lot more entertaining than a blog, which is mostly a one-sided conversation with myself, and it’s been a lot more successful, and entertaining.”코리아 언더그라운드의 창립자 스티븐 리비는 별로 만족스럽지 못 했던 블로그 운영 시도와 미국의 영화제작자 케빈 스미스의 ‘스모드캐스트’에서 영감을 받은 이후에 팟캐스트를 만들지 않는 것에 대해 핑계대는 건 그만두고 레코딩을 시작했다. 이들의 쇼에 일상적인 자연스러움은 거의 혼자서 일방적으로 말하는 방식인 블로그보다 훨씬 더 재미있다. 이제까지는 훨씬 더 성공적이었고 재미있었다.

korea Underground records out of Pohang and Gyeongsan (on the outskirts of Daegu) and consists of Leavy, from the US, along with Teresa Chien from Melbourne, Australia, and Dan, another American who joins the team on occasion. Recording together con-sists of, well first a little soju of course, and then sitting down comfortably in a soundproofed room with Leavy’s computer and mics up and running. Up until early this year, they had been recording with a big Blue Snow-ball mic, which did its job...if not a little too well. “It’s a decent little mic but picks up every sound in the room,” Leavy says. “In one early episode it actually picked up the growl of a guest’s stomach, which I later edited out. We all had to sit on the floor because any chair or sofa noise would have been as audible as our voices.” The team has since tossed out the Blue Snowball in favor of AudioTechnica ATR2100 personal mics, so each host has his/her own. They also use a Behringer mixer to help smooth out the sounds as well. “We no-ticed a big improvement in overall sound quality since the upgrade,” Leavy says, admitting though that new equipment can be a bit finicky, so they are still working out some kinks.코리아 언더그라운드는 포항과 경산(대구 외곽지역)에서 이루어지며, 호주 멜버른에서 온 테레사 치엔, 가끔 팀에 참여하는 미국인 댄과 함께 역시 미국에서 온 리비로 팀이 이루어져 있다. 함께 레코딩은 물론 약간의 소주와 함께 하며 방음처리가 된 방에서 리비의 컴퓨터와 마이크를 켜 놓은 채로 편안히 앉아서 하게 된다. 올해 초까지만 해도 커다란 블루 스노우볼 마이크를 이용해서 녹음을 했다. 마이크로써의 역할을 제대로 해내긴 했지만 조금은 지나치게 좋은 마이크였다. “블루 스노우볼은 괜찮은 소형 마이크이지만 방안의 모든 소리를 잡아냈어요. 초기 에피소드에서는 게스트의 꼬르륵거리는 소리까지 잡아내서 나중에 제가 편집했어요. 모두들 방바닥에 앉아서 녹음했어야만 했는데 의자나

The korean market for expat podcasting has a decent number of podcasts, all of whom bring their own unique content and style to their shows, which helps to alleviate any feelings of competition between them. korea Underground’s style was “conceived as a con-versation you’d have with friends over beers and as such nothing is off the table for conversation (as those who heard our drunk episode will recall!) and we are sometimes NSFW,” says Leavy. However, he also adds that the show is responsible for adding factual and useful information for those looking to learn more

about korea from an expat perspective. He adds: “We will sometimes do interviews if I find someone I think is interesting enough but I wanted the show to be more about the conversations we have with each other than with guests and that’s what really sets korea Under-ground apart from the other shows out there.”외국인이 운영하는 팟캐스트의 한국 시장은 꽤 많은 수의 팟캐스트 수를 자랑하며, 모두 그들만의 독특한 내용과 스타일을 선보이고 있다. 덕분에 이들간의 경쟁이라는 느낌이 덜 든다. 코리아 언더그라운들의 스타일은 “ 친구들과 맥주 한잔을 하며 하게 되는 대화이며 대화의 주제에서는 아무 것도 제외되는 것이 없다.(우리가 취했던 에피소드를 들었던 사람들이라면 떠오를 것이다!) 그리고 가끔은 직장에서는 위험하다.” 라고 리비가 설명했다. 그러나 이 쇼는 외국인의 고나점에서 한국을 더 잘 알고자 하는 사람들에게 사실이며 도움이 되는 정보를 넣는 것에도 책임감을 가지고 있다고 덧붙였다. “우리는 인터뷰를 할 만큼 흥미로운 사람이 있다면 한 번 해보려고 해요. 하지만 게스트와 함께 하는 것보다는 우리끼리 하는 대화에 더 집중을 하고 싶어요. 그리고 그런 편이 코리아 언더그라운드가 다른 팟캐스트와의 차별화된다고 봐요.”


As if this wasn’t enough, Leavy says that he takes great pride in introducing indie bands to his ever-grow-ing audience. “I always had it in my mind that korean music was pretty much just k-Pop but once I started digging around I found a rich tapestry of indie bands, both foreign and korean and they are making some great music.” He says that featuring this music on the show has elevated the program to new levels, levels unimagined when he first began the show.이것으로 충분하지 않다는 듯, 리비는 관객들에게 인디밴드를 소개시키는데 큰 자부심을 갖고 있다고 했다. “항상 한국의 음악은 K-Pop이 전부라고 생각했어요. 하지만 좀 더 살펴보니 각양각생의 인디밴드들이 한가득이었죠. 외국인도, 한국인도 많았고 모두들 훌륭한 음악을 만들고 있어요.” 공연에서 음악을 피쳐링하는 것은 새로운 수준으로 프로그램을 끌어올리는 것이라고 했다. 공연을 처음 시작할 때는 상상할 수도 없는 수준 말이다.

The performance is full of dramatic music, large-scale cast and crew, dazzling choreography and a beautifully designed stage. This production is directed by Jung Sunyoung, who has been praised for her exceptional and often times experimental approach to opera performances. The featured tenor is Lee Byeongsam and his counterpart is soprano kim Bokyung. Together they make the stage come alive, as they have collab-orated with singers from other operas like Turandot. Expect to be impressed with this dramatic rendition of Aida.

SynoPSISThe Pharoah of Egypt was at war with the Ethiopian king. During the war, the Ethiopian king’s daughter, Aida, was cap-tured and then enslaved to be the daughter of the Pharoah. The appointed general of the Egyptian army, Radames, falls deeply in love with Aida. During their love affair, the Pharoah sends Radames out to war again and then, upon his return, he rewarded the other Pharoah’s daughter, Amneris, to be his wife. The love story takes another turn, as Radames spares the Ethiopian king’s life, Amonasro, to prove his love to Aida. The Pharoah eventually figures out Radameshas helped Aida and her father escape from Egypt and is condemned to death.The escape plan fails though and Aida joins Radames in death, but as they die, Amneris sits above the tomb praying for peace for her beloved Radames.

Brilliant composer Bizet’s first opera Les Pêcheurs de Perles (The Pearl Fishers), produced by korea National Opera visits Daegu International Opera Festival. Les Pêcheurs de Perles is famous for its sweet melody and colorful, exotic orchestration such as tenor’s aria, ‘Je crois entendre encore(I still seem to hear it)’, which is loved by many opera lovers around the world. The most famous male duet, ‘Au fond du temple saint(In the divine temple)’ and performed in last year’s festival and was much loved by the audience. Especially, the opera, which is the fourth work of korea National Opera’s 2015 season, is the first full production staged by Jean-Louis Grinda, who is well-known around the famous theaters in Europe. He is also the art producer of Monte Carlo in Monaco. You can expect to see Bizet’s Asian influence in a fresh and fantastic way.

Then the priestess, Leïla, and the high priest of Brahma, Nourabad arrive at the island. Leïla sees Nadir, who she loved before, and feels conflicted and Nadir also forgets the pledge of friendship with Zurga. She decides not to break her duties as a priestess but eventually enjoys a secret love affair with Nadir, forgetting the vow of cel-ibacy. Nourabad becomes aware of it and arrests them. The day starts out partly cloudy on our way to Duryu Park for the 8th annual Daegu International Body Painting Festival (DIBF). As in past events, there were competitors from around the world for both categories: Fantasy Make-up and Body Painting. This two day event was a little different this year because there were 20 entries in the Fantasy Make-Up category, and while most of them were from korea and China, two were from Russia. In the Body Painting category there were 30 competitors and most were from korea but there were artists from China, Russia and Serbia as well. Also there was one entry from Japan, Miki Ueda and her model Ichihashi Haruna. She has been paint-ing for three years and this was her first competition in Daegu and first time in korea.

The categories are timed events. Fantasy Make-Up was the first competition which started at noon. They only had four hours to finish, whereas Body Painting had six. Each contestant had their own tent for prepa-ration. In the middle of the afternoon it was hot and there were a lot of fans blowing to keep the models from sweating away the paint. In full make up, carry-ing their headdresses and accessories, several models said it was exhausting. After the Fantasy Make-up models went on stage the Body Painting models fol-lowed.

This event was coordinated in part by Sam Soohyun Jang, the Advertising & Event Planning Team Deputy Manager. He remembered me from last year’s event and was instrumental in providing me the resources to write this story. With his help I had a chance to inter-view the judges, the artists and the models. By giving me a backstage pass, I was able to get some awesome pictures, over 250 pictures total. Several pictures were with two or more models standing together. He


also provided a translator (thank you Seoyang kim, Victoria, without you it would have been so hard to communicate with everyone). While backstage I also had the chance to speak to the MC (Mistress of Ceremony), Chae hee Moon. She spoke to the mod-els and the artist after each model went on stage. She would ask where they were from, how they felt about being on stage, what inspired them and how old they were. The youngest artist was 17.

While the models were being painted, there were rock bands, dancers and other performers on stage. There were also exhibition booths, a food court (with all kinds of different types of food) and face painting. New this year was the “Painting Experience Exhib-it”- Be the Artist. Here, you had the chance to paint a manikin, using real paint. The kids really loved this as it lasted all afternoon and well into the evening.

The judges were from all over the world. First, there was 28 year veteran, 2002 world champ, Bert Verstappen of the Netherlands. Next, returning for

the 4th time was American Scott Fray. In 2002, he was a world judge and in 2013, Mr. Fray won here in Daegu. From Italy, Francesca Tariciotti returned for her 2nd time judging here in Daegu. She really enjoys Daegu and korea. Then there is Birgit Mortl from Austria. She’s been painting for over 16 years and feels welcomed and thinks that the event is well organized. This is the first time this world champion has been to korea. Last but not least, there is 23 year veteran Canadian Jinny. She’s been here since the beginning in 2008. She told me that in 2009, TBC (TV & Radio) got involved. She also informed me that the korean government supports this annual event.

The DIBF Body Painting awards 10,000,000 won to the 1st place winner, 5,000,000 won to 2nd place, 3,000,000 to 3rd place. The next three contestants receive 1,000,000 won Encouragement prize. The DIBF Fantasy Make-Up awards 3,000,000 won to 1st place, 2,000,000 won to 2nd place, 1,000,000 won to 3rd place. The next three contestants received a 500,000 Encouragement prize. Finally, the DIBF Pho-togenic Model awards 1,000,000 won to 1st place, 700,000 won to 2nd place, 500,000 won to 3rd place, 400,000 won to 4th place, and 300,000 to 5th place.

The winners of the Photogenic Awards were 1st place model: Anna Antonova, artist: Imchan-hee, 2nd place model: Lana, artist: kwwon hyun Jung, 3rd place model: Yu kawashita, artist: Ninomiya Shoko, 4th place model: Eun ah kim, artist: Bang seo Young and in 5th place model: Nai Seul, artist: Zhang Cui Cui. The winners of the Fantasy Make-Up were: 1st place kim So Young, 2nd place Im Eui Young, 3rd place Shin Young Hyun, 4th place Lee Na Yeong and in 5th place Bae Su Jung. Finally, the winners of the DIBF are in 5th place No Yoon Jeong, 4th place Yang Yoon Gyeong, 3rd place Lee Hyo Gyeong, 2nd place Moona J. Weaner and 1st place went to kim Min Ah. Take steps to prevent malaria. Even if you travel within the same country, each region may have a different strain of malaria which could require different precau-tions and medications.Dengue is an acute disease which causes a high fever. Mosquitos with the dengue virus live in tropical and subtropical area of Asia, the South Pacific, Africa and the Americas. There isn’t a vaccination for dengue yet, so take precautions to prevent mosquito bites.Prime time for bites is the early morning and evening.Yellow fever prevails in Africa and South America. The Daegu Chimaek Festival was at the top of my ko-rea Bucket List long before I moved here. I like fried chicken but I really like good beer--a festival with BOTH??--perfect!!

The week leading up to the festival brought some high temperatures and heavy heavy rains, but the weather held out and we had a perfect Thursday and Saturday!

On Thursday, we headed to Duryu Park around 6pm. We wanted to see what the festival was all about and to decide if we wanted to go back at all. We were very pleasantly surprised. Though not busy that day, I was amazed by the size of the festival, the number of chick-en vendors and the impressive variety of craft beer. My friends and I walked around the park to make sure we saw everything it had to offer, before settling on a place for dinner. The chicken we had first was just ok (if I’m being generous), but I was a couple beers in, so I didn’t mind too much.

After dinner, we headed down to the main stage area, where we were treated to a concert by Olltii and Chee-tah. My exposure to korean music has been limited to k-Pop and traditional music, so seeing some Rap music was a welcomed change! My friends and I really en-joyed the music and wondered what else was in store for the rest of the weekend.

I really enjoyed myself at the festival on Thursday and quickly made plans to return on Saturday with another friend. This time, we arrived around 4pm--the sun was blazing and the festival was packed! My friend kiara and I bought some water to drink between beers (best laid plans and all) and set off on our Craft Beer Pub (well--stall) crawl. While sipping on some great beer, we walked around the festival to take in the sights and scope out the chicken places we’d try for lunch and dinner.

The place we chose for dinner was hands-down the best we had at the festival. We were walking around the main festival area and saw a long line in front of one of the stalls (that was our first clue). We then real-ized that they were giving out samples so we could de-termine which chicken we liked (bonus!) and we could see that all the food was very fresh! We were sold and were very, very happy with our choice.

After dinner, we headed back up to the craft beer area to start in on our last two beers and enjoy the belly-dancing show on the small stage. After that finished, we returned to the main stage where we witnessed some sort of norebang in front of a very very large crowd (those people had nerves of steel)! After that finished, it was time for the daily EDM par-ty with DJ One Two. After an afternoon of sipping on some good beer and eating some fabulous chicken, that was the best way to end our evening.

Needless to say, I will definitely be back next year!

Since 2009, Daegu Metropolitan City and ExCO have worked hard to market medical tourism to the world. They have done so via promotional activities such as promotional booths, familiarization tours, and so on. What is medical tourism you might ask? It means that people from different parts of the world come to korea for the purpose of getting certain medical treatment. And Daegu is one of the best cities for such tourism.

In 2015, promotional booths were opened at 20 event venues and included various promotional activities such as basic health check ups designed to introduce participants to what medical tourism in Daegu could offer. Promotional booths were opened at eight international events including Preview in Dae-gu, International Green Energy Expo & Conference, and DIOPS. It offered unique experiences in medical tour programs to its participants. More booths will be opened later this year at such events as GIF 2015, Water Expo korea 2015, TCI Global Confer-ence, ISES Solar World Congress 2015, and DAMEx 2015. Even if you don’t participate in one of these events, you can come to the first floor of ExCO and visit a promotional booth for the event. The purpose of these promotional booths is to spark interest in the medical tourism of Daegu.

Before the promotion, they arrange a medical tourism course keeping in mind the event’s participants. The medical promo-tional team puts an online ad on the event’s website page and introduces Daegu’s medical tourism opportunity. Brochures and related products are distributed to participants’ hotels to promote their booth and programs.

In order to prepare the booth itself, the medical tour promo-tional team discusses with an event organizing committee how and where to set up the booth, keeping in mind the conve-nience of the location. Interpreters should be hired in order to limit language barriers, and local clinics contacted for medical service experience. In addition, there is often a person hired who is dressed as a Daejanggeum character. Historically, Daejanggeum was a nurse for the royal family in the Joseon Dynasty who learned to cook as well as provide medicinal services to the king. The booth also brings medical equipment such as machines that check blood pressure, BMI, medical beds, acupuncture equipment, and other hands-on materials.

During the event, the booth provides certain services. They include some form of medical consulting. For example, check-ing blood pressure and BMI with a doctor present who can consult with participants about the results. Participants can get their pulse checked by an oriental medicinal doctor as well. If needed or desired, participants can receive acupunc-ture therapy. Participants will be able to apply for the medical tourism program in Daegu that allows for visits to local clinics. Services included with that are pick up service as well as in-terpreting services. There is also support available for medical fees incurred depending on total cost of visits. Additionally, participants can take a picture with the Daejanggeum to docu-ment the experience.

So let’s paint an even clearer picture of what is meant by “medical tourism.” The point of it is basically two-fold: to pro-vide medical services and to give a tour of the city of Daegu. In terms of medical services, one would be able to visit any type of clinic they would like from oriental medicine to dental clinics, dermatologists, general health, etc. Help with booking these clinics is also available. The tour is an option so partic-ipants can be introduced to some key spots in the city if they want. Transportation and interpretation services are offered for free no matter the size of your party, and times can be adjusted according to participant’s convenience.


Ju-hyeon Park has been an interpreter who has worked at medi tour promotional booths for four years, since 2012. She says she first got involved when she took a medi tour coordi-nator class offered by Daegu Metropolitan City and then began work as an interpreter at ExCO. She’s involved in promotion of medical tourism as well as interpreting for various medi-tour-ists. When asked about one of her favorite memories from working at a promotional booth she said that during the World Water Forum, a foreigner who attended visited a promotional booth and had a medical consultation about her shoulders with an oriental medicine doctor. She helped the woman visit a local oriental medicine clinic after doing acupuncture at the booth. As a result, the woman could finish the forum in better shoul-der condition. Ju-hyeon says that many medical tourists look to Seoul or Busan for services but that Daegu also offers quality service. She hopes people will learn about the advantages of Daegu’s medical tourism and visit Daegu.

Daegu Metropolitan City and ExCO work hard to run quality promotional booths for medical tourism at international events. The goal is that foreigners to the city can experience Daegu’s quality medical service as well as consultation. Maybe you’re new to Daegu and want to know where you can see some good live music. Maybe you’ve been here a while and the foreigner bar street and looped playlists have grown a bit stale. Either way, you might not be aware that South korea actually has a killer punk scene. And while it is true a large percentage of the scene is based in Seoul, there are koreans and foreigners busting their humps to make things happen in Daegu too. The best way for Daeguites (Daegukin?) to check this scene out is Once a Month Punk at Retro city.

Retro City is a bar that opened earlier this year near Jungangno and Daegu Station. Retro City is owned and operated by Elkim Yoon and offers live music and events every weekend. The layout and vibe of the place is very unique. There is a big dance floor as well as numerous cozy little nooks for those who prefer their privacy. It’s a great place off the usual beaten path of the one street everyone goes to. Considering wide variety of acts and musical taste of the proprietor they were more than happy to host Once a Month Punk, an event put together by Redboi and Far From Home Booking to showcase punk, hardcore, and metal from all over South korea.

Redboi, an American hailing from Minneapolis,, grew up amid the 80’s punk scene and has been immersing himself in the korean scene and promoting the genre around the country since stepping off the plane two years ago by networking, selling records, booking and promoting shows, and simply showing korean punks how it’s done. Redboi has been putting together Once a Month Punk since May, so it’s still very much a new thing.

The shows are on the fourth Saturday of every month and feature three bands from korea’s punk, metal, and hardcore scene. Past events have included local punk band Food for Worms, acts from Busan like The Bank-rupts, and hardcore bands Gwamegi and End These Days. The August show also featured Yuppie killer from Seoul. Once a Month Punk has also hosted the occasional punk themed movie night.

If you want to hear “Wiggle, Wiggle, Wiggle” or “Turn Down For What?” five times a night while packed tight in an overcrowded bar, you know where to go. Subway (Sinnam Station of Green Line)To find “Yangmal alley (socks alley),” take subway line two to Sinnam station and take exit number one. Right after you exit, look for an alley on your right. Yangmal alley merges with a main road. Walk along this road or about seven minutes (350 meters) and you will see an arch that is the entrance to Seomun market.

Convenient Facilities

Parking buildingThe eight story parking ramp is located between Dong-san shopping district and sector two. There are two entrances and the ramp can hold 660 cars. It costs 500 won to park for 30 min-utes with a 250 won charge for each additional ten minutes of parking. You can pay at an automated machine on the first floor. Credit cards and transportation cards are accepted.

Parking lotThere are two sections that hold up to 350 cars. It can hold 60 cars in the Dongsan shopping district and 50 cars in the base-ment of each of the five additional sectors.

ATMYou can find them at various places around Seomun market. There is also one located on the first floor of the parking ramp.

Information CenterIt is located right next to the entrance of the parking ramp. You will see a sign that says, “Information Center”. Inside, you can collect all the information you need about tourist destinations in Daegu as well as more information about Seomun Market.

1. Most stores close around six or seven p.m. (It varies by store and some may be open later)2. Bring cash! These vendors do not accept credit cards. So hit the ATM before you shop here.3. Compare prices at different shops. There are many vendors that sell similar products here so shop around and consider your options before buying.4. Restrooms are located at the top of each sector or between floors.

Established in the Goryeo Dynasty, Seomun market was one of the three major markets during the Joseon dynasty. After the korean War, a large linen and cotton wholesale and retail market was created. The textile industry is the traditional industry of Daegu. Seomun market is a lively place for locals and tourists alike that truly showcases an original part of Daegu culture. You can find an assortment of food as well as affordable, well-made market goods.

Dongsan Shopping DistrictYou can find dishes and flatware in the basement. On the first floor, you can find baby goods, children’s clothing and many more household items. On the second floor and above, you’ll find cute clothing for a reasonable price.

Distrcit OneThe first floor sells linen and silk fabrics, and the second floor sells korean made clothing and luxury bedding. This spot is vis-ited by koreans of all ages taking a look at the colorful, luxurious fabrics.

District TwoThis building burned down in 2005 but was recentlyrebuilt and revived with a brand new facility. In the basement, you can grab a bite to eat. They sell things like strawberry cakes, pork belly, Jajangmyeon, Mon-na-ni Tteok-bokki and grilled bul-gogi. The first floor is retail and clothing and the third and fourth floors sell fabric. This spot is always popular for Daegu locals, but receives an influx of foreign shoppers in October buying fab-ric for Halloween costumes.

District FourDistrict four is a general store. On the first floor, you will find a random mix of tuxedos, garments, crafts and traditional korean souvenirs. You can buy silk fabrics and bedding on the second floor.

District FiveIt’s located at the outer corner of Seomun market but is always packed with people. On the first floor, you’ll see shoppers buying dishes either for commercial use or for their own homes. The second floor sells clothing.

AJin Shopping DistrictThis place is ideal for artists and designers, “Home-Fashion” crafts and it sells hand-made clothing. Along the streets of this district, you can find various tools and materials such as buttons, feathers, ribbons, zippers and laces. “Mending Street” is lined up and down with sewing machines and seamstresses and tailors who have been sewing for over ten years – another special feature of the Jin Shopping District.

Myungpoom PlazaMyungpoom Plaza is a fashion center located in Seomun mar-ket. The first floor sells jewelry, accessories, imported goods, shoes, dishes and baby goods. The second and third floors sell underwear and women’s clothing. This is a one-stop shop plaza with a little bit of everything

Dried Sea Food DistrictThe dried sea food district of Seomun Market sells dried fruits, nuts and (of course) an uncountable amount of dried sea food. In fact, 60 to 70 percent of all dried foods sold in Daegu are sold here. An added bonus is that you can buy the goods for about 20 or 30 percent cheaper here than you can at the market. To get here, walk past the arched structure and you will see it on your left.
