In This Issue

Dear Readers, This month we are thrilled to bring you an interview with Anthony Gormley. Brendan made his way to Harewood House to catch him as he unveiled his new works, which are now on show there.

We also have a number of great offers for you, including a competition to win Family Tickets to the Christmas Shows at The Playhouse; fun competitions at The Carriageworks; tickets for the Yorkshire Antiques and Art Fair; and a taste sensation at Gaucho’s.

Plus, the excitement is building for the 25th Leeds International Film Festival; there’s a hilarious play that’s a must for all Leeds United fans; music is pouring out of the city; and we take a peek at a Headingley house that’s about to be featured on ITV’s May the Best House Win.

Let us know what you have in store for November. The deadline for editorial is 1st October and for advertising it’s 7th October.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards

Carole, Jack and the team

THEY LIVED IN HEADINGLEY

By Eveleigh Bradford

GEORGE HOLBROOK JACKSON (1874-1948)Journalist, writer and publisher

One of the men, George Holbrook Jackson, 26 years old, had just ar-rived in Leeds from his home town of Liverpool. He had had some earlier clerical jobs while freelancing as a writer, but now he was working as an agent in the lace trade, living in Buckingham Mount, Headingley. A member of the Fabian Society, widely read and open to new ideas, he felt iso-lated in Leeds, which he saw as an intellectual desert. The young man he met in the bookshop (books were to become his lifelong pas-sion) was a young schoolteacher, Alfred Orage, who had arrived in Leeds s few years before and was teaching in a Board School in one of the city’s slum areas. Alfred Orage was a member of the Inde-pendent Labour Party, an active political writer and speaker, a the-osophist, and a friend of the char-ismatic ‘New Life’ philosopher Edward Carpenter. The two men began a conversation which Jack-son said ‘continued for the next ten years’ and remained friends all their lives. The outcome of their discussions, reading, and ferment of ideas was the Leeds Arts Club, which they founded in 1903.

The Arts Club became one of the most interesting and vibrant cen-tres of radical thought and experi-mental art outside London. It had premises in town with a library, ar-ranged exhibitions of avant-garde painting, architecture and sculp-ture, and held regular discussions

on literature, music, philosophy and drama (with an active play-goers’ group). Visiting speakers included George Bernard Shaw, G. K. Chesterton, W. B. Yeats, Hi-laire Belloc. It attracted the liveli-est minds in the town, men and women, and provided a challenge to local conventionality. But suc-cessful as it was, by 1906 both Holbrook Jackson and Alfred Or-age felt ready for a wider sphere of activity and they left that year for London, though they continued to keep links with the Club and often returned as speakers.

In London, with financial help from George Bernard Shaw, Jack-son and Orage bought a struggling Christian Socialist weekly, The New Age, which they transformed into an influential arts journal, with distinguished contributors. But Jackson did not stay long as joint editor - he devoted his time increasingly to writing. In 1907 he published a biography of Shaw, then a book on William Morris, a range of other publications, and in 1914 The Eighteen-Nineties: a Re-view of Art and Ideas at the Close of the Nineteenth Century which remains the standard work on the period.

Meanwhile he took over another literary magazine, and established his own small press. Thus began a long association with printing, publishing and collecting books, about which he wrote extensive-

ly – he has an amazing string of publications to his name, mostly concerned with writing, reading, printing, and collecting books, though William Morris, Edward Lear and Shaw continue to figure as subjects. Up to his death in 1948 he did much to encourage a high standard of bo ok production, and was a patron of the Pelican Press, which republished some of his work after his death.

Now his name is all but forgotten, both in Leeds where he helped to inspire a cultural revolution, and everywhere his books used to be known and read. He was a mas-ter of the aphorism, and what has survived of his writing is a number of quotations, like ‘Never put off till tomorrow the book you can read today’. What would he have thought of the e-reader?

n the autumn of 1900 two young men met by chance in a bookshop on Briggate and found they shared interests and ideas which set them apart from what they saw as

the grubby commercialism of Leeds. This accidental meet-ing led to a creative friendship and partnership which was to have an exciting and challenging impact on the cultural and intellectual life of the city in the early years of the twen-tieth century.

ANTONY GORMLEY AT HAREWOOD HOUSE

ntony Gormley, undoubtedly one ofthe world’s foremostsculptors and amongthe most respected of

contemporary British artists, hascreated two striking new piecescurrently on show at HarewoodHouse.

Wewere luckyenough tocatchupwiththemanhimselfatHarewood, where these new works can beseen for the first time, and found

himhappytospeakexpansivelyandengaginglyabouthisart.

AsthemanbehindtheAngeloftheNorth, Gormley obviously harboursafondnessforourpartoftheworldand draws inspiration from thenorthern landscape. When askedwhat has brought him back toYorkshire, Gormley explained thatthe idea of exhibiting newwork atHarewood House appealed as ithas previously housed the iconicAdambyJacobEpstein, oneof the

key figures in the development ofmodern sculpture and a stronginfluence and inspiration forGormleyhimself.

Gormley cited the YorkshireSculptureParkandtheHenryMooreFoundation as vital exponentsfor contemporary sculpture andposited that something about thelandscape of Yorkshire, particularyits richmining heritage and senseof community, is conducive tothe creation of great work in thismedium.

A central and recurrent theme inGormley’s work is the relationshipbetween the human form andits environment. This new work, entitledTwoStates, isnoexceptionand speaks to man’s connectionto (or disconnection from) nature.Gormley says he feels HarewoodHouse, with its neo-classicalarchitecture surrounded by rolling, idyllic countryside is a fitting andevocativesettingforthesepiecestomaketheirfirstappearance.

Gormley obviously harbours a fondness for

our part of the world and draws inspiration from

the northern landscape

While Two States offers a stirringdepiction of the human form, itdiffers somewhat from previousGormley works such as AnotherPlace or Event Horizon withtheir more organic, naturalisticphysicality.TwoStatescameabout,Gormley says, while developingwhat he calls the “Block-Block”works, which were an attempt to

This notionof the altered state of our physicalenvironment is coupled with theintegration of technology intoour lives and the fact that ourchief means of communicationand exchange of information isconducted through bytes, bits andthepixelsofcomputerinterfaces.

hat struck me,when able to viewTwo States at closequarters, washow these figures,

ostensibly abstract at the outset, reveal their humanity the longeryouspendintheirpresence.Aswithmany of Gormley’s sculptures, theinitialcastsweretakenfromhisownsix foot-something frameand, whilewe’re at first confrontedwith thesetwin towers of rusty iron blocks, beforelongonebeginstosensethatthere is a human soul containedwithinthemetallicgrid, alive, awareand yearning to reconnect with theworldatlarge.

Two States will be on show atHarewoodHouseuntil30thOctober.
