Party at my house

Hi Betty,

I just wanted to let you know that there is a small

get-together at my house tonight at around 8:30pm.

It is very casual and you don't have to bring anything

but you can if you want to.

See you then!

Fred.

future tense: “be going to” vs. “will” the future tense refers to a specific time in the future and has two different forms: “will” and “be going to.” Although the two forms can sometimes be used interchangeably, they often express two very different meanings. Since we’ve already learned how to structure both of these future tenses using “will” and “be going to,” it’s time to learn when to use each form.

use “will”With voluntary actionsWe often use the “will” form to suggest that the speaker will do something voluntarily. A voluntary action is one where the speaker offers to do something for someone else. For example, we use “will” to respond to someone’s request for help. On the contrary, we use “will not” or “won’t” when we refuse to voluntarily do something.

• Will you help me write this e-mail? (request)• Sure, I will help you write it. (accept) • No, sorry, I won’t. (decline)

To express a promiseWhen promises are made in English, we usually use the “will” form.

• I will call you when I arrive.• I promise I will not look inside the file. • Don’t worry, I won’t download the virus.

use “going to” To make a plan or to talk about scheduled activitiesWhen talking about future plans, use the “be going to” form. If the person intends to do something in the future, it is a plan. It doesn’t matter if the plan is realistic or not.

• He is going to design a Web site. • I am going to pay him for his work. • Is he going to design your Web site? • We are going to meet on Monday to discuss the design.

use either “going to” or “will

To express a predictionWhen talking about predictions in the future, you can use either the simple future “will + verb” or future continuous “be going to + verb” form.

• I think tomorrow is going to be fun.• I think tomorrow will be fun.• This Web site is going to bring lots of traffic in two months.• This Web site will bring lots of traffic in two months.
