I. *Contents:

In this course, we plan to introduce the basic concepts of Carleman estimates. Carleman estimates have

numerous applications. The most popular application is the proof of the unique continuation property for

solutions of partial differential equations. Recently, these estimates also are used in solving many inverse

problems.

II. Course prerequisite:

Advanced Calculus, Graduate PDE (not really required).

III. *Reference material ( textbook(s) ):

No textbook. Class lecture notes.

Final oral exam.

V. *Course Goal:

Students will be familiar with the derivations of some basic Carleman estimates. Roughly, two approaches to

derive a Carleman estimate. One is the technique of pseudodifferential operators, the other one is the clever

use of integration by parts. We hope students can understand both approaches. Students are also encouraged

to understand some applications of Carleman estimates.
