Part III Reading Comprehension

阅读理解 1

Passage One

Uncle Harold is a changed man. For years he has bored aunt Grace with his expressions of regret at missing opportunities, particularly bargains he has failed to take advantage of. When he wanted to buy something, he would think of the buying over and over again. He would find it hard to make up his mind. “You remember that old chest,” he would say to her, “I wish I’d bought it. It would have been worth twice as much now.” Aunt Grace’s usual answer was a sigh, though it was never clear whether she was agreeing with her husband’s sense of loss, or whether she was silently saying, “I wish you would stop going on what might have been.” However, Uncle Harold clearly suffered a change of heart last month. He returned from a furniture sale where he had bought nearly everything in sight. “I realized,” he told Aunt Grace, “how often I’ve regretted not receiving a bargain when I saw one. So

now I’ ve taken a bold(大胆的)step.” He showed her a Victorian sofa, a rocking

chair, a stuffed bird in a glass case, a damaged coffee table, and three vases. She sighed.

For the past weeks Uncle Harold has been moving round the house speaking to himself, “I wish I’d never seen that sofa”, “If only I hadn’t bought that coffee table”, and “Had I known that damned bird was going to be watching me…” Perhaps he isn’t a changed man, after all. Certainly Aunt Grace sighs as much as ever.

first he became rich by selling his small but genuine(真实的)collection of early

U.S. autographs(亲笔签名) . Discovering his ability at copying handwriting, he

began imitating signatures of George Washington and Ben Franklin and writing them on the title pages of old books. To lessen the chance of detection, he sent his forgeries

to England and Canada for sale and circulation(流通).

Forgers have a hard time selling their products. A forger can’t approach a respectable buyer but must deal with people who don’t have much knowledge in the field. Forgers have many ways to make their work look real. For example, they buy old books to use the aged paper of the title page, and they can treat paper and ink with chemicals.

In Spring’s time, right after the Civil War, Britain was still fond of the Southern states. So Spring invented a respectable maiden lady known as Miss Fanny Jackson, the only daughter of General “Stonewall” Jackson. For several years Miss Fanny’s financial problems forced her to sell a great number of letters and manuscripts belonging to her famous father. Spring had to work very hard to satisfy the demand. All this activity did not prevent Spring from dying in poverty, leaving sharp-eyed experts the difficult task of separating his forgeries from the originals.

Passage Three

It is natural for young people to be critical of their parents at times and to blame them for most of the misunderstandings between them. They have always complained, more or less justly, that their parents are out of touch with modern ways;

that they are possessive(占有欲的) and dominant; that they do not trust their

children to deal with crises; that they talk too much about certain problems; and that they have no sense of humour, at least in parent-child relationships.

I think it is true that parents often underestimate their teenage children and also forget how they themselves felt when young.

Young people often irritate(激怒) their parents with their choices in clothes

and hairstyles, in entertainers and music. This is not their motive. They feel cut off from the adult world into which they have not yet been accepted. So they create a culture and society of their own.

Sometimes you are resistant, and proud because you do not want your parents to

approve of what you do. If they do approve, it looks as if you are betraying(背叛) your own age group. But in that case, you are assuming that you are the

underdog(失败者): you can’t win but at least you can keep your honour. This is a

passive way of looking at things. It is natural enough after long years of childhood, when you were completely under your parents’ control. But it ignores the fact that you are now beginning to be responsible for yourself.

If you plan to control your life, co-operation can be part of that plan. You can charm others, especially your parents, into doing things the way you want. You can impress others with your sense of responsibility, so that they will let you do what you want to do.

Passage Four

Do you remember the long hot summers of your childhood, when the sun kept on shining from breakfast until bedtime? Thinking back over the years, it seems that sweets used to be sweeter, girls used to be prettier, and people were in the habit of being nicer to each other than today. Or, perhaps like many others, you have revisited a place after several years only to be disappointed. The classrooms of your old school,

which used to swallow you up as a child are now small; the corridors(走廊), which

would once stretch away into the distance are now covered in a few long steps; the high school fence, that went on rising almost to the sky, is now no higher or more frightening than others.

Why is this so?

Psychologists say that we tend to remember the pleasant things, rather than the unpleasant, so we have forgotten the colder days of our childhood, along with the less attractive sweets and people. It is also possible that we live in a different world; surely the manufacturer of the favorite ice-cream of our youth must have changed his recipe

(配料) over the years. Certainly, we ourselves have changed in growing up. We are

nearer to the top of the fence than we used to be, and we take longer steps down the same corridor.

I suppose I must accept the evidence of the weather records that the summers are no colder than they used to be. I am afraid I have to admit that my old school has not become smaller. But I am not willing to admit that my first love was not the most beautiful girl in the world. If only I had not thrown away her photograph!

Passage One

My father had a small business, making homemade ice cream. During the summer months, rows of eager tourists lined up at that ice-cream counter. One day, in 1976, we had a new employee Debbie, who had never done this type of work before, but planned to give it to her all. But on her first day, Debbie made just about every mistake in the book. She added up the sales wrong on the cash register, charged the wrong prices for items, and dropped and broke a half-gallon of milk.

I couldn’t stand watching her struggle any longer, so I went into my father’s

office and expected him to walk right into the store and fire her on the spot. Since my father’s office was situated within view of the sales counter, he had no doubt seen what I was talking about. He sat, thoughtful, for a moment, then got up from his desk and walked over to Debbie. “Debbie,” he said, “I have been watching you and I saw how you treated Mrs. Forbush.”

Debbie’s face began to flush, and she looked as if she was about to cry. She struggled to remember Mrs. Forbush from the many women she had given the wrong change to or spilled milk on.

My father continued, “I’ve never seen Mrs. Forbush be so polite before. You really knew how to handle her. I am sure she is going to want you to wait on her every time she comes in.”

My father was a wise employer. Because of this, Debbie became a loyal and hard-working employee for 16 years, and a friend for life.

Passage Two

Most books about dogs end up being about people, but in a few the animals get to share the spotlight. Jon Katz’s last book was one of those.

In his latest, “The New Work of Dogs”, Katz has a keen sympathy for the situations dogs can find themselves in. Dogs are being asked to do tasks never before

put to them, to help the lonely and damaged and to serve as surrogate (替代者 )

spouses and children. It seemed to him that dogs were working as much as they ever had in centuries past when they were herders and guards, but in different ways. Gone were the days when they ran free and were considered animals. They are now furry little people.

Katz offers a variety of statistics about owners who refer to themselves as Mommy and Daddy. There is also an extraordinary recount of some of the meetings of the Divorced Dogs Club. Women who have lost or tossed their husbands get together with one another and their pets. They discuss how much better dogs are than men. As he writes, “There were, it turned out, many advantages of living with dogs. They went to the bathroom quickly—and outside. They didn’t leave dirty clothes and smelly shoes lying around. They didn’t stare at televised football games on beautiful fall afternoons.”

Katz is certainly on to something. And it seems reasonable that a widespread reliance on dogs for emotional comfort may be a result of a society that is in some way impoverished in its human connections.

Passage Three

In 21st century Britain, it seems the traditional British tea is in decline. Sales of standard tea bags were down by 16% over the past two years. But sales of herbal and fruit teas rose 30%. Speciality varieties such as green tea were sold 50% more over the same period. The main reason appears to be younger drinkers.

Young people were attracted by the health benefits of fruit teas and green tea.

Green tea contains high levels of antioxidants (抗氧化剂) which is useful in cutting

the risk of heart attacks. Even this could be put aside by its newer rival, white tea. It claims to contain three times the number of antioxidants.

At the Tea Council, Bill Gorman offered another theory. Women were attempting to follow health advice recommending they drink two litres of water a day. That does not leave much room for other drinks. “The water industry has done a wonderful job in encouraging people to do what is nutritionally not necessary.”

But some young women replaced some of their water quota with herbal or speciality teas. “We have seen men who don’t change their socks or their tea drinking habits. But we are finding the interesting shift within females.”

Mr. Gorman insisted that his own reading of the tea leaves did not forecast doom for the tea industry. The growth in speciality teas was making up for any decline in the traditional tea. It is true that the tea industry is facing tough competition with

Passage Four

It’s a long, long way. The modern marathon is run over 26.2 miles or 42.195 km. Some people find it easier to “marathon” than others. This is partly due to their genes.

The Kalenjin tribe lives in the northwest of Kenya. Astonishingly, 12 of the world’s top-20 distance runners are Kalenjin. They seem to win some marathons

24

Page 25: 北外网院高起专、高起本入学考试英语题目汇编  · Web viewPart I Vocabulary and Grammar. 词汇和语法 1. Choose the best answer. from A, B, C and D. Write your

without much efforts.

Danish sports scientists have studied the Kalenjin runners. They also compared their style and physique with that of elite Danish runners. Scientists noticed that heart rate of Kalenjin runners stayed remarkably low, even when running as fast as 15 miles per hour over long distances. People from this region also have a good build for running with long, very thin legs. The muscle fibres of Kalenjin runners were analysed. It was found that they are capable of changing oxygen into energy much more efficiently than the Danish runners.

The theory is that the Kalenjin runners carry certain genes which adapt them to

living at high altitude (海拔 ). They live on a plateau 7000ft above sea level. This

would certainly explain the low heart rate. At such a high altitude, oxygen levels start to fall. So the body has to increase the number of oxygen carrying red cells in the blood. When an athlete trained at high altitude comes down to sea level to compete, they still carry extra red blood cells. This gives them a huge power advantage in their running.

Scientists are trying to identify specific genes that contribute to success on the track. It is not an easy task. But there is a simple truth. A person whose parents have both been successful marathon runners is likely to have at least some useful genes for long-distance running.

Passage One

Writing is not an easy skill. It is both mental and physical. A person must be able to move the muscles in the hands and fingers to form letters and numbers. Some people are not able to move these muscles easily. Experts say teachers should suspect

dysgraphia( 书 写 困 难 ) if they see handwriting that is unusually difficult to

understand.

Children with dysgraphia often hold their writing tools in an unusual position. They may also place the paper in an odd position for writing. The disorder generally appears when they first learn to write. Children continue to write wrong or misspelled words, even after their teacher has shown them the correct way. Experts say the cause of the disorder is not known. Some people with dysgraphia are able to improve their writing ability. But others are not. As with other disorders, the most important part of treatment is for someone to first identify the problem.

There are some simple methods to help these children. For example, schools can give them more time to complete writing activities. Students might be permitted to type their work. They do not have to write by hand. Teachers can also permit students to take exams by speaking the answers instead of writing them.

Experts say people with dysgraphia may be able to write well if they work slowly and develop their skills. Technology can help. One way to avoid the problem is to use a computer. Students can use the computer spell checker to help make sure every word is correct.

Passage Two

Inventor Dean Kamen has invented the world’s first self-balancing individual transport vehicle. It is called the Segway Human Transporter.

The Segway looks like a long stick with two wheels. The stick has handles for a person to hold. The wheels are connected by a platform. The person stands on the platform and holds the handles. The vehicle moves forward or backward when the person moves his body in that direction. The driver turns the handles to go left or right. The Segway is powered by batteries that can be re-charged. It can travel at a speed of nineteen kilometers per hour. It costs less than ten cents a day to operate.

Mr. Kamen says the Segway could replace cars in crowded city centers. It is designed to reduce pollution and solve other environmental problems in cities. However, it is not designed to travel on roads.

The Segway will be for sale to the public soon. It will cost about three-thousand dollars. Several businesses are testing the vehicle, including the Postal Service and the bookseller Amazon. Some letter carriers will try riding the vehicles to deliver the mail. Amazon workers will use them to find books in their huge storage buildings. Police in two cities also will test the vehicles to see if they can be used for law enforcement.

What is “real” football? Soccer? American football? Australian Rules? Many of course would differ on the answer to that question. Much would depend on the city you come from. In reality, the answer to the question is not so complex at all. All you have to do is to pay a visit to the town of Ashbourne in Derbyshire (England). Every

Shrove Tuesday(忏悔星期二 ) for over a thousand years, locals – and anyone else

who is crazy or drunk enough – battle out the game of “ball”.

I imagine everybody, including myself, thought that football got its name because you used your foot to move the ball. Well, I'm sorry to tell you that the great majority of people are wrong. Football is called so simply because it was a game for common people who played “on foot”. The rich, you see, when they participated in a sport, did so on horseback.

Initially, football was not played using only the feet. In the original game the rules were that there were no rules!!! In Ashbourne, it's a free-for-all where anything goes and any method can be used to gain victory. There are two teams involved: the “Uppards” (people born north of the river) and “Downards” (people born south of the river). The number of players depends on how many people turn up, but very often it is thousands against thousands. The goals are three miles apart and the idea of the game is to touch the opposing goal three times. The game still played today begins at two o'clock in the afternoon and finishes, if neither team has managed to score the three "goals", at ten o'clock in the evening.

One day about eight years ago in the departure lounge of LaGuardia airport, I spotted a young boy in tears and his mother at his side also appeared upset. As it turned out, the flight was full, and they couldn't sit together. Those were the days when the first-class cabins were not always full, so I seated mother and son up in first class.

I soon found out that the boy Miles and his mom were returning to their home in Kansas City. Miles is a surviving twin (his brother died at birth) and has had serious health problems. In spite of his thirty-one major surgical procedures, his recovery was still in doubt.

Miles enjoyed his flights through LaGuardia as it allowed him to spend time in our VIP lounge. There we have an entire wall filled with autographed pictures of many celebrities, including Miles’s hero – country singer Garth Brooks. We soon added Miles’s picture to the wall of fame.

One day, Mr. Brooks was relaxing in the lounge and he was impressed by the youngster with the big sad eyes. We told him about Miles and how much Miles admired him. Mr. Brooks took out his guitar and penned a few words of encouragement inside the guitar case. He asked us to deliver the guitar and his cowboy hat to Miles. It was like the gift of life.

Miles would have to go through many more treatments, but his broad smile greeted us with every visit. We were glad to see the face of an ailing boy transformed by the joy of a stranger with a guitar.

Running late again, I rushed into the Scouts parents’ meeting and hurriedly took a seat, noting the surplus of empty chairs. At least, I wasn’t the only one running behind. The master checked his watch, and with a sigh, started the meeting. He pointed out that the empty chairs, which should have been filled with parent volunteers, were our biggest problems.

As he spoke, I felt a rising sense of guilt within me. After all, even I did not want to help out with the scouts the previous year. I realized that the problem wasn’t just about empty chairs; it was also about people like me who were unwilling to sacrifice some of their time to a worthy cause. Before I could change my mind, I raised my hand to volunteer as the leader. Although I knew next to nothing about teaching a group of noisy second-graders, I was determined to make it work.

My first meeting was as chaotic and noisy as the first day of a county fair. Much to my surprise, the boys actually enjoyed themselves, and next time even invited their friends to join us, and before long our ranks swelled from 4 to 10. I was having as much fun as the boys and had no idea that I’d be so popular.

As I walked through the school’s parking lot, it was rare when one of “my” boys didn’t call out a greeting or stop me for a quick hug and a story to share. As I watched them, I thought of the empty chairs at that meeting and those who would never know this joy. After all, I gave those boys only one hour of my time every week, but they rewarded me with their hearts.

Passage Two

In the future your car will run on water instead of gas! You might even drive a flying

car! These predictions(预言 ) are some of today’s exciting guesses about what

technology might bring tomorrow. But in reality many of the high-tech things our parents thought we’d be using by now never appeared.

OK, not all past predictions have been proven wrong. A few of them have been

surprisingly accurate (准确 ). Some great thinkers predicted the arrival of the credit

card, the fax machine and even the Internet years before they happened. But for each prediction that has come true today, several others have missed by a mile. Let’s look at some predictions from the not-too-distant past.

Robot Helpers?Where’s the robot in my kitchen? Nowhere, of course. And he’s probably not coming anytime soon. Robots do exist today, but mostly in factories. Back in the 1950s, however, people said that by now personal robots would be in most people’s home. So why hasn’t that happened? Probably because robots are still too expensive. And maybe the idea of robots cooking our dinners and washing our clothes is just too strange. At home we seem to be doing fine without them.

Telephones of tomorrow? In 1964 an American company introduced the video telephone. They said by the year 2000 most people would have a video phone in their homes. But of course the idea hasn’t caught on yet. The technology worked fine, but it missed something obvious: people’s desire for privacy. Would you want to have a video phone conversation with someone after you just stepped out of the shower? Just because the technology is

being nicer to each other than today.

Why is this so?Psychologists say that we tend to remember the pleasant things, rather than the unpleasant, so we have forgotten the colder days of our childhood, along with the less attractive sweets and people.

Passage Four

It is natural that young people are often uncomfortable when they are with their parents. They say that their parents don’t understand them. They often think that their parents are out of touch with modern ways; and that they are too serious and too strict with their children.

Young people like to act on the spot without much thinking. It is one of their ways to show that they have grown up and they can face any difficult situation. Older people plan things ahead, at least in the back of their minds, and do not like their plans to be upset by something unexpected.

Young people often make their parents angry at their choices in clothes, in entertainment and in music. But they do not mean to cause any trouble; it is just that they feel cut off from the older people's world, into which they have not yet been accepted. So they want to make a new culture of their own. And if their parents do not like their way of doing things, this will make them extremely happy. Sometimes they are so proud of themselves that they do not want their parents to say “yes” to what they do.

Passage One

Maybe a pair of shoes is not very interesting, but think again! There are many customs and traditions associated with shoes. For centuries, shoes have showed a great deal about the wearer. In Ancient Rome, the type of sandals worn by the soldiers revealed their rank. During the reign of Louis XIV of France only red shoes could be

used by the aristocracy(贵族) at the King’s court.

Today’s fashionable high heels are not a modern invention. High heels were first

made in the Middle Ages. Streets were narrow and very dirty since people would throw their rubbish out into the streets. To overcome the problem of walking through the rubbish, people wore high heels.

Shoes are mentioned in folk stories, old customs and traditions. Long ago throwing an old shoe at someone was considered to be an ancient way of bringing someone good luck. After weddings, guests would throw shoes at the bride and groom as they left their wedding. Later this was considered rather unclean so the old shoes were tied to carriages and later to cars! In British marriages, the bride’s father delivered her shoe to the bridegroom who touched the bride’s forehead with it to show he owned her.

Shoes are often referred to in English proverbs. For example, to say that a person is “too big for their boots” is to suggest that they are arrogant. Another proverb is “to be in another person’s shoes” which means that you can imagine that you are that other person. “To be on a shoe-string budget” (= to be with very little money at disposal) is a phrase we can all identify with !

Shoes also appear in many stories, fairytales and songs. So when you next buy a pair of shoes, remember all the stories and customs before you decide what to buy!

Passage Two

Carrots are one of the most popular vegetables in the world. Although carrots are orange now, the original carrots were purple. Yellow and orange carrots did not appear until the 16th century. They quickly replaced the older purple carrots because purple carrots turned an unpleasant brownish color after being cooked.

Carrots were valued by the ancient Greeks and Romans as something that could treat diseases. Today doctors encourage people to eat more carrots. They say a single carrot contains more than the daily requirement of Vitamin A for adults. Carrots get their

orange color from a chemical called carotene(胡萝卜素). If you eat too many carrots,

your skin can turn yellow. This condition is physically harmless, although it is visually startling. Seventeenth century Dutch farmers were aware of this property of carrots. They fed carrots to their cattle to produce a rich yellow-colored milk. Housewives borrowed this trick and added carrot juice to the cream to turn their butter yellow.

Although it may seem strange carrots used to be eaten mainly as desserts – such as in pies and puddings – because of their high sugar content. The English even made carrot jam and wine. Today carrot cake remains a favorite dessert in many families.

Passage Three

The term “freshman fifteen” means fifteen pounds, or about seven kilograms, which refers to the weight students might expect to gain in their first year of college. People used to talk about the “freshman ten”, and before that the “freshman five”. Are freshmen more inflated, or just the expression?

The fact is that many young men and women do put on extra weight when they start college. Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, has found that freshmen gain an average of four pounds during their first twelve weeks. If weight gain continues at this rate, how long before they put on fifteen pounds? The answer is forty-five weeks, or almost a year.

Why do so many freshmen gain weight? The answers listed by experts are not so surprising. One is poor diet: College students often eat foods high in fat and sugar. After all, there are no parents around to say “no” to junk food. Students may also miss meals. They could be in class or studying or just busy. In any case, those who miss meals are more likely to overeat when they do have food. Also, freshmen often use food to put their mind at ease. They have college pressures to deal with and not only that, many are living away from home for the first time. Another reason college students gain weight is that they often do not get enough exercise.

For many college students, the extra weight they put on in their freshman year can be as hard to escape as term papers and final exams.

Passage Four

Robert Spring was a 19th century forger, a person who makes a copy of something to cheat people. He was so good at his profession that he was able to make his living for 15 years by selling false signatures of famous Americans. Spring was born in England in 1813 and arrived in Philadelphia in 1858 to open a bookstore. At first he became

rich by selling his small but genuine(真实的) collection of early U.S. autographs(亲

笔 签 名 ). Discovering his ability at copying handwriting, he began imitating

signatures of George Washington and Ben Franklin and writing them on the title pages of old books. To lessen the chance of detection, he sent his forgeries to England

and Canada for sale and circulation(流通).
