Level of Japanese Classes Kumamoto University offers various kinds of Japanese classes for international students and researchers.

Japanese language proficiency is categorized into the following 7 levels.

1 Lower Elementary For those who have never studied Japanese

2 Upper Elementary JLPT (Japanese-Language Proficiency Test) N5

3 Lower Intermediate JLPT (Japanese-Language Proficiency Test) N4-N3

4 Upper Intermediate JLPT (Japanese-Language Proficiency Test) N3-N2

5 Lower Advanced JLPT (Japanese-Language Proficiency Test) N1

6 Upper Advanced JLPT (Japanese-Language Proficiency Test) N1

7 Those who have passed the JLPT N1 with a high score do not need to take Japanese classes.

The level of Japanese proficiency (1-7) is written in the list of Japanese classes (p.10) and

each syllabus (pp.19 – 51). Please choose the appropriate classes according to the result of

your placement test (your Japanese proficiency) which will be held on April 4 (p.14). It is not

recommended to take a class whose level is lower than the result of your placement test.

How to Apply

Regular Students in Undergraduate School UUndergraduate students who need Japanese language course credits for their Compulsory Foreign Language subject requirements should complete the credits required for graduation within their first two years. Even if you take more Compulsory Foreign Language subjects than are required, those credits will not count toward your graduation requirements. Credits obtained from Elective Foreign Language subjects will count toward your graduation requirements for elective classes. However, it is not possible to take a course that is a lower level than the result of your placement test.

Special Auditors in Undergraduate School (Short-Term Exchange Program) SU-S SU Special Auditors in Undergraduate School (Japanese Studies Program) SU-J

There is no distinction between Compulsory Foreign Language subjects and Elective Foreign Language subjects. Both will count toward your program completion requirements.

Others SG, G, N, R O You may attend courses that correspond to your Japanese ability, but you may not receive credit for them.

Receive a "Japanese Classes Guidebook" and applications from the International Student Office. Apply for Japanese classes on the website by April 3. Attend an orientation for the Japanese classes and take the Japanese Language Placement Test

on April 4. (See p.14).

Choose classes appropriate for your level. (See “List of Japanese Classes” at p.10 and “Advising on Registration for Japanese Classes” at p.14.)

Register the classes. (Please note that registration is different depending on your status, so please read p.16 carefully.)

Japanese Class Orientation and Japanese Language Placement Test

Advising on Registration for Japanese Classes

Students who wish to take Japanese language classes are required to attend the orientation and take the Japanese Language Placement Test. The orientation and the test will be given as shown below. Time and Date: 9:00 - 11:30 April 4 (Thursday) Place: Classroom C-301 Zengaku-Kyoiku-to (General Education Building)

Please apply for Japanese classes on the website by April 3 (Wednesday). The results of the placement test will be posted on the bulletin board at Classroom 2A

of Zengaku-Kyoiku-to (General Education Building)

Advising on Japanese classes will be given for those who do not know which Japanese classes to take. Our advising session will be held as below. Date and Time: 10:00 - 12:00 April 5 (Friday)

Grading

Regarding course registration, you must attend the first day of class and register the course as directed to you at that time.

The method for course registration differs depending on your status, as follows.

Regular students in Undergraduate School [U] Register for classes by using Kumamoto University's academic affairs information system, SOSEKI.

Auditors in Undergraduate School [SU-S] [SU-J] [SU] Submit the registration form for the Kumamoto University Short-Term Exchange Program to the International Student Office.

Other students and researchers [SG, G, N, R] [O] Submit the “Registration Form for Japanese Classes” (pink paper) to the International Student Office.

Deadline Regular students in Undergraduate School [U]: April 12 (Friday) Auditors in Undergraduate School [SU-S] [SU-J] [SU] : April 12 (Friday) Other students and researchers [SG, G, N, R] [O]: April 12 (Friday)

Please note that registration after the deadline will not accepted. Regular students in Undergraduate School [U] and auditors in Undergraduate School [SU][SU-S] [SU-J] who need credits can receive grades. Note that students who attend less than two-thirds of the classes cannot receive any credits.

Final decisions regarding enrollment will be made on the basis of student performance in the

first class and then posted on the bulletin board. Accordingly, students who do not attend

the first class will not be eligible for enrollment unless there are extenuating circumstances.

About the Intensive Japanese Program for Monbukagakusho Scholarship students

These are beginning level intensive Japanese courses for Japanese language trainees [N], that is,

Japanese government (Monbukagakusho) scholarship students with an embassy recommendation. These

students who will study or do research as graduate students at Kumamoto University may take these

courses for preparatory Japanese language study. Classes will be held every day. No academic credits

will be awarded for these courses.

In principle only Japanese language trainees [N] may take these courses. However, regular students

in graduate school [G] with a Japanese ability level from 1 to 2, who wish to find employment in Japan in

the future, may be allowed to take these courses based on the results of an interview and test.

The syllabi for these courses will be distributed in class.

How to apply

Only Regular Students in Graduate School [G] can apply for this course.

Receive “Japanese Classes Guidebook” and “Application for Intensive Japanese Course” from the International Student Office. *If you can read hiragana and katakana, please take the placement test to confirm your ability level.

This course is available for students up to ability level 2. Students with ability level 3, please take the

intermediate Japanese classes.

Submit your “Application for Japanese Classes” along with a copy of your Student ID Card to the International Student Office. *At this time, please also register for the interview and a readiness test.

The deadline for registration is Tuesday, April 9 at 5 p.m.

Take an interview and a test. *The results will be emailed to you.

Accepted students should submit a “Registration Form for Japanese Classes (pink paper) to the International Student Office.

Classes will begin on Monday, April 15. The class schedules will be distributed on the first

day of class.

Those who do not take an interview and a test are not eligible to join this course.

Japanese Language Program for Beginners (Kurokami Campus)

This program is for Kumamoto University international students and researchers and their spouses who wish to obtain the basic Japanese ability required for daily life in Japan. There are two courses available, one which studies the first half of this textbook, and another which studies the second half. The first class is for students who have never studied the Japanese language before, and will begin with learning hiragana and katakana. The second class is for students who have finished the first half, or those who already have the equivalent Japanese ability. Japanese Language Course for Beginners (Honjo Campus)

This course is for international students and researchers studying at Kumamoto University’s Honjo Campus who wish to obtain the basic Japanese ability required for daily life in Japan. However, this course is not for students who have never studied Japanese before. International students, researchers and their spouses who have never studied Japanese before and wish to begin should take the Japanese Language Course for Beginners (Kurokami Campus) as detailed on the previous page. Classes in this course will meet once a week for a total of 12 classes. This course does not award academic credit, nor does it award a grade for completion. Class times, contents and application methods differ from those of the Japanese Language Course for Beginners at Kurokami Campus. Those wishing to attend this class must first attend an orientation on Apr,25.
