There was a man who was blind from birth. He owned a fruit stand ( 摊子) on a very busy

street.

One day his son came to him and told him that he had read in the newspaper of a new

discovery that they could operate on his eyes and allow him to see. The father and son traveled

to the doctor and paid for the operation.

The doctor asked the man after the operation, "What is the first thing you want to see when

I take the bandages off?"

The blind man replied, "I want to see my beautiful fruit on my stand!"

The doctor and the son took the man down to the busy street where his fruit stand was

located for so many years. The doctor carefully took off the bandages so that the man could lay

his eyes on the beautiful fruit. The man was so full of joy that he could finally see his life's work-taking care of his fruit.

After a few hours of enjoying his beautiful fruit stand, he looked down the street and saw

there were quite a few fruit stands in both directions. He spent so much time looking at other

fruit stands and he was so sad because his fruit stand was not the only one along the street!

The reason I tell you this story is:

-You are an individual.

-You have different fingerprints, DNA, and thinking!

-You are one of a kind.

-There is no competition.

-You are on the endangered species list!

-Once you are gone, that's it!

-Be yourself and allow everyone else to be who they are.

36. How did the son know there was a way to allow the blind man to see?

A. From the doctor. B. From a friend.

C. From the advertisement. D. From the newspaper.

37. What was the blind man's biggest wish after he could see?

A. To see his fruit. B. To see the world.

C. To see his son. D. To see the doctor.

38. Why did the man's feeling change from joy to sadness?

A. Because he couldn't see his stand very clearly.

B. Because his life's work was taking care of his fruit.

C. Because his stand was just one of those fruit stands.

D. Because the fruit wasn't as beautiful as he had thought.

39. The purpose of the story is _____________.

You might think that Western students are less shy when it comes to getting on with the

opposite sex, but the truth is that pupils in the UK can feel just as awkward. British are actually

quite reserved (保守的) and being at university can make them feel out of their comfort zone.

Everyone finds it difficult to talk to the opposite sex on campus.

However, there is a way of dealing with this shyness in Britain, and it is called "Freshers

Week". "Freshers Week" is designed to help people socialize and lose their reservation. It is a

one-week long party for first year students to welcome them before lectures and lessons begin.

I remember my first week at university - it was terrifying. I looked at the schedule for

"Freshers Week" and was amazed at how much was planned. Every hall where students live

organizes its own events to help students become friends with the people they live with. My hall

was called "Goldney Hall" and the week ahead included a talent show, a comedy night, and

themed parties, including one for which we had to dress up as golfers.

The first event I went to was a school kid's party at which everyone dressed up as if they

were in school. This party encouraged me to talk to all the people on my floor. One boy, who lived

opposite my room, was very handsome and I felt nervous speaking to him at first. But when we

met at the party dressed in silly school clothes, I felt a lot more relaxed speaking to him.

It sounds strange, but dressing up seems to be how British overcome their shyness at

university. My "Freshers Week" was terrifying, but I managed to forget how scared I was.

40. What does the underlined word "awkward" in the first paragraph mean?

A. confident B. unfortunate C. amazed D. uncomfortable

41. Why is there a Freshers Week before the university begins?

A. To enjoy the university life.

B. To show the talent of students.

C. To help students become friends.

D. To know the lectures and lessons better.

42. What happened in the author's first week in university?

A. She made many friends in the parties.

B. A lot of school kids came to the party.

C. There were many activities including parties.

D. She felt lucky when she met the handsome boy at the party.

43. In the author's opinion, Freshers Week is ______________.

A. strange B. good C. funny D. boring

When you hear of plastic surgery, what do you think of? A Hollywood star is trying to look

younger than her real age? People who want to change the size of their stomachs, breasts, or

other body parts because they see it done so easily on TV?

Those are what people usually think of plastic surgery, but what about the 4-year-old boy

who has his chin rebuilt after a dog bit him? Or the young woman who has the birthmark on her

forehead lightened with a laser?

Plastic surgery is a special type of surgery that can involve both a person's appearance and

ability to function. Plastic surgeons try to improve patients' appearance by correcting physical

defects (缺陷 ) or changing parts of the body because they are not satisfied with the way they

look.

Nowadays in the U. S. more and more teens are interested in plastic surgery. Interestingly,

the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reports a difference in the reasons teens give for

having plastic surgery and the reasons adults do: Teens view plastic surgery as a way to fit in and

look acceptable to friends and peers. Adults, on the other hand, frequently see plastic surgery as

a way to stand out from the crowd.

According to the ASPS, more than 350, 000 people 18 years and younger had either major or

minor plastic surgical procedures in 2014. The most common procedures teens choose include

nose reshaping, ear surgery, acne (粉刺) and acne scar treatment, and breast reduction.

But is it a good idea for teens to have plastic surgery just to change the appearance? Plastic

surgery is unlikely to change your life. Most doctors spend a lot of time interviewing teens who

want plastic surgery to decide if they really need the surgery. They try to make sure that teens are

doing it for the right reasons.

Almost all teens care about their bodies. Almost everyone wishes there were a thing or two

that could be changed. A lot of this feeling goes away with time. Before you get plastic surgery,

ask yourself if you're considering it because you want it for yourself or it's to please someone

else.

44. Where is the passage most likely to have been taken from?

A. A book review. B. A film magazine.

C. A history book. D. A research report.

45. In the first two paragraphs the author introduces plastic surgery by ____________.

A. listing some numbers B. giving common examples

C. providing scientific findings D. comparing different opinions

46. According to the author, which of the following situations means you really need plastic

surgery?

A. You can't stand your big nose.

B. You want to be the most beautiful girl in your class.

C. The birthmark on your face makes you unconfident.

D. Most of your friends have already had plastic surgery.

于 10 个单词),完成对该问题的回答。答语要意思清楚,结构正确,书写工整。We all know that money can't buy happiness, but many times we act as if we were happier

with a bit more money. We are conditioned to want to be rich (when we know the rich aren't

happy either) ; we are trained to want the latest gadget (a small tool) or style that television tells

us to want; we want to earn more money because then we'll have a good life.

But none of them will bring us happiness. No matter how much we earn, no matter how

much we have in the bank, no matter how nice our clothing or cars or toys, none of them will

make us happier. And the sad thing is that it could take us decades to pursue wealth and

luxurious (奢侈) items before we realize this.

So what will bring us happiness? Luckily, it's these three things that don't cost a thing. These

three things have been proven by surveys of hundreds of thousands of people about what they

have, what their lives are like, and how happy they are.

Here they are, the Three Secrets to Happiness:

1. Good relationships. We have a human need to be close to and to be intimate with other

human beings. Having good and supportive friendships, a strong marriage or close and loving

relationships with our family members will make us much more likely to be happy.

Action steps: Take time, today, to spend time with your loved ones, to tell them what they

mean to you, to listen to them, and to develop your relationships with them.

2. Positive thinking. I'm obviously a big supporter of positive thinking as the best way to

achieve your goals, and it turns out that it can lead to happiness too. Optimism and self-esteem

are some of the best indicators of people who lead happy lives. Happy people feel empowered,

take control of their lives, and have a positive outlook on life.

Action steps: Make positive thinking a habit. In fact, this should be one of the first habits

you develop. Get into the habit of getting rid of all negative thoughts and replacing them with

positive ones. Instead of "I can't", think "I can". It may sound silly, but it works for me, every time.

3. Flow. This is a popular concept on the Internet these days-a state we enter when we are

completely focused on the work or task before us. We are so buried in our task that we lose track

of time. Having work and leisure that get you in this state of flow will almost undoubtedly lead to

happiness. People find greatest enjoyment not when they're passively mindless, but when

they're absorbed in a mindful challenge.

Action steps: Find work that you have a passion for. Seriously - this is an extremely

important step. Find hobbies that you have a passion for. Turn off the TV-this is the opposite of

flow-and go outside and do something that truly engages you.

You've been given the Three Secrets to Happiness. Don't waste them!

1. What are the three secrets leading to happiness according to the passage?

__________________________________________________________________________

2. Who does the author write this passage for?

__________________________________________________________________________

3. What should we do to keep positive thinking?

__________________________________________________________________________

4. Why does the author say that watching TV is the opposite of flow?

. Ⅲ 阅读理解(共 4 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 8 分)阅读下面短文,从各题所给的 A、B、C、D 四个选项中选出最佳答案。At our fellow WSJ's blog, The Wallet, there's a challenging Q & A with the authors of a new

book called Smart Girls Marry Money, a satirical self-help book which has a serious mission -to

get women and men to talk more about marriage and finances.

The book came into being when the two working-mom authors, Ford and Drake, M.D., met

while picking up their young children from preschool. They noticed that the moms who were able

to spend the most time with their kids were the "moms who hadn't necessarily taken their

careers seriously and married someone with money," said Dr. Drake in the interview. "It became a

joke that if we were smart, we would have married for money."

The authors aren't saying that every woman should desire to marry a rich guy. But they

argue that marriage shouldn't just be about love-it should also be an economic partnership (as

marriage traditionally was for centuries). Women and men should be more frank about marriage

and money, instead of entering marriage starry-eyed without considering the financial future.

Dr. Drake, in the interview, also asserted that women shouldn't abandon their careers, in

case of a spouse's illness or divorce. "It's an important possession," she said. (The full Q & A can

be found here.)

The interview struck a chord for me: I happen to know quite a few women, especially back in

New York, for whom the net worth of their potential spouses or at least their earning potential-was an important factor in determining suitability for marriage. I'm not saying these women

married solely for money, but it was a key consideration. Now, after having children -or in some

cases, after marriage none of these women work.

Readers, do you know women or men who have married for money? How important,

honestly, were financial considerations when evaluating your partner?

1. What is the purpose of paragraph1?

A. It tells the background of the book.

B. It introduces the topic of the book.

C. It shows a lot of detail of the book.

D. It explains why the book is so popular.

2. What can be inferred (推断) from paragraph 2?

A. Ford and Drake don't work when they become moms after marriage.

B. Certain moms can spend time with kids because they don't work.

C. It is necessary for women to give up their work to take care of kids.

D. It is not a smart behavior to marry guys only for money rather than love.

3. What's the author's attitude towards the issue that people marry for money?

A. The author thinks that women should marry men with lots of money.

B. The author insists both men and women should earn enough money.

C. The author doesn't believe that money is very important in marriage.

D. The author doesn't show her personal agreement or disagreement.

4. What's the best title for the passage?

A. Is money important for career?

B. How can girls marry rich guys?

C. Is it smart to marry for money?

D. How can girls become smart?
