Bank robber Frederick McDowell was arrested in Texas after the police discovered that his bomb threat had been wri- tten on the back of his CV. McDowell had left the note behind af- ter he robbed a Wells Fargo Bank branch in Fort Worth. Says Sergeant Kevin Morton, ‘‘McDowell pl- aced a bag on the bank counter and gave the cashier a note indicati- ng it contained a bomb. Aft- er the cashier placed mon- ey in another bag, he hurr- ied from the bank, carrying both bags. The problem is that he forgot to take the note with him.’’ Now, of cou- rse, McDowell has plenty of time to regret his mistake — in jail. Bank robber held after leaving CV behind Why is it that even after repe- ated polio-erad- ication progra- mmes, we are still fighting the disease? The fact that Ind- ia, along with Ni- geria and Pakist- an, accounts for 99 per cent of the wor- ld’s total polio cases provides the reas- on for these campaigns to be carried so aggressively in our country. While we thought we would rid the country of polio by 2001, today, with 87 cases in 2003, India is still the dubious ‘leader’. What measures have you adopted to curb the resurgence of polio? Among the primary measures is our call for political advocacy. Rotary dele- gations have met the CMs of highly po- lio-endemic states such as UP, Harya- na, Rajasthan, MP and the health min- isters of Rajasthan, West Bengal, UP and Bihar, inviting them to make cons- cious efforts to help their states attain polio-free status. There has been a con- certed effort to involve MPs as well. In fact, we set up an awareness counter at the BJP headquarters in Delhi, which drew nearly a hundred MPs. We have also initiat- ed similar efforts with ot- her political parties. Is the Polio Killer Parl- iamentary Forum an inspiration of this call? The Polio Killer Parliamentary Forum has been formed by Union health min- ister Sushma Swaraj, with MP Kirti Azad as the convener, to garner supp- ort of MPs for this national health en- deavour. The ideal would be to transl- ate the concept into action at the state- level as well. For this, we need to gear up bureaucratic advocacy. So, the thrust is on involving decis- ion-makers and higher authorities? Absolutely. With this vi- ew, Rotary organised two important conclaves — in Kolkata and Delhi — of senior health functionar- ies of the 10 most polio- endemic states. The meetings offered an ideal setting for state representativ- es to explicitly share their shortcomin- gs, bottlenecks and success stories. On Tuesday, Krishna Mehta’s show at the La- kme India Fashion Week (LIFW) saw Tupur Chatterjee modelling an outfit which was not Krishna’s. The outfit is owned by model Car- ol Gracias, and has been designed by Shan- tanu and Nikhil Mehra. How did it happen? NIKHIL MEHRA: There were only two dresses like th- at (model Joey Matthews has the other). When we found out what had happened, we took the matter to Fashion Design Council of India ex- ecutive director Vinod Kaul. Krishna invited us to her stall to check whet- her we felt any of our designs had been copi- ed, and from the collection put up there, there weren’t any.But a designer should know his or her creations. Tomorrow, if a Rohit Bal gar- ment is shown as ours, wouldn’t he object? Why was our label missing? KRISHNA MEHTA: The dr- ess was part of a last-minute collection of nine outfits. Ju- st a day before my show, cho- reographer Lubna Adams to- ld me it was too short and I tr- ied to rectify this by adding outfits. At such times, oversi- ghts happen. I wasn’t backstage; my design te- am did the fittings. I don’t know why the flaps and the label were missing. I didn’t know till a few minutes before the model was to go on the ramp. I lost my presence of mind. Instead of saying, ‘take that outfit off,’ I said, ‘Let her go and return the outfit later.’ Why would I copy another designer for one outfit out of 400? This was a bizarre, unfortunate incident, but nobody believes me. CAROL GRACIAS: A week before LIFW, fittings for Kri- shna Mehta were on at the Taj simultaneously with fitt- ings for Monisha Jaising. But after my fittings, I could- n’t find my dress. I thought it might have gone with Krishna’s clot- hes by mistake. I tried to call her, but was not successful. That was the last I knew of my dress till I saw Tupur wearing it. I went backstage but everyone already knew that it was the dress I had lost. Two pocket flaps and the Shantanu and Nikhil label were missing. VAHBIZ VACHHA (backstage in-char- ge): There were two fittings going on wh- en Carol lost her dre- ss. She called me to ask for Krishna’s number because she believed her dress might have gone with her collection by mistake. Back- stage, we had no reason to believe it was Carol’s dress. Consequences VINOD KAUL (ex- ecutive director, Fas- hion Design Council of India): How serious is this situation? We are looking into it. An outfit travelled from one place to another, by possible mix-up. It sounds bizarre, but we ne- ed to know more before we act. This will take a few days. Does the FDCI have rules for de- signs being copied? We don’t know whether the design was copied; we are still in the process of finding out. But yes, there is acti- on for serious issues which come un- der breach of conduct. The matter is being looked into by the board and the executive director. What will punishment be? Kr- ishna is also on the FDCI board. Punishment will be decided upon af- ter conferring with the board. If co- pying is involved, it will be viewed very seriously indeed. But that was thr- ee years ago. Much has changed since then — except the reality that the Ar- oras lead a hand- to-mouth existen- ce. The Rs 3,000 Aa- stha’s father Ash- ok brings home from his job with a export house keeps the family going —but only just. ‘‘Both Sumitra Mahajan and Sahib Singh promised me a job when they came to see Aastha — but nothing has happened,’’ says Aastha’s mother Anjana. The girl herself, shy in the pres- ence of strangers, looks on bewilderment — lit- tle minds can never comprehend why promises are made to be broken. While the UNPF grant is a fixed-term depo- sit worth Rs 2 lakh, the interest on the amount is available to Aastha’s parents every six months. ‘‘I want her to become a doctor,’’ says Anjana. As Aastha nods in agreement, little does she realise the ha- rsh truth. ‘‘Unless I have employment to supple- ment the family income,’’ reiterates Anjana, ‘‘it will be difficult for us to make this possible.’’ Still, hope springs eternal. EVENTS

SATURDAY 26 JULY 2003

ARIES (March 21 - April 19) You may not havegiven much thought to certain fears or anxieties. In fact you may have done your best to ignorethem. If you’re willing to face these, issues you’d

hoped you’d never have to think about, you could not onlyresolve them, you could put them to rest for good.

TAURUS (April 20 - May 20) For ages you’vebeen trying to figure out how to fit in certainactivities that are important to you personally orprofessionally with obligations on the domestic

front. You’ve avoided discussing this for fear of upsettingothers. On the contrary, they’ll not only support you, they’llmake some amazingly clever suggestions.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 20) For some reasonyou’ve been under the impression that you’vehave to deal with certain issues on your own.Youfelt that others either just weren’t interested or

couldn’t handle them. They thought you wanted to handlethem solo. The sooner you discuss this, the faster you’llresolve this confusion.

CANCER (June 21 - July 22) Generosity is onething. Allowing others to take advantage of yourgood nature is quite another. True, you hate theidea of those you care about suffering. But

they’re convinced you that they’re in distress. Investigateand you’ll realise that, in reality, they’re doing nothing morethan indulging in some championship league complaining.

LEO (July 23 - August 22) Others may be in ahurry, but you must now allow them to forceyou into making plans or commitments aboutwhich you’re unsure. Ordinarily you’d leap in,

confident that experience would guide you. But now youmust be more thorough, if not approach things with acertain amount of caution.

VIRGO (August 23 - September 22) Most Virgosare health conscious, which means you rarely letthings go. Yet you’ve put off dealing with a par-ticular matter for a very long time. This won’t

make it go away. The sooner you address the issue inquestion, the faster you’ll be able to put those anxietiesyou’re suffering from to rest.

LIBRA (September 23 - October 22) After weeksof having carefully managed both tricky situa-tions and difficult individuals, things are finallyfalling into place. This is a relief and you should

be celebrating. But you can’t when interlopers are claim-ing your efforts as their achievements. Forget about beingpolite. Pack them off as the cheats that they are.

SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21) Howev-er worthwhile what you’re planning, it’s of littleconsequence if those closest to you aren’t hap-py. Difficult as recent exchanges have been,

don’t give up. It may not seem so, but they were only try-ing to understand what your intentions were. Now that theyknow, they’ll be more secure and far less temperamental.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 - December 21)Important as it is that you make plans now, it’s vi-tal that you keep things flexible enough that youcan make changes without too much difficulty.

That ensures that when the remarkable opportunities ush-ered in by the planetary activity of the next month takeplace, there’s nothing that will keep you from responding.

CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 19) Youdidn’t realise that it was going on at the time. But you’ve allowed the manoeuvres of certainunscrupulous individuals to undermine your

confidence. While getting back at them would help restoreyour dignity, you’ll boost your self-esteem considerablymore if you focus on achieving what they’ve been sayingthat you couldn’t.

AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18) If everthere was a time when it’s vital that you refuseto take no for an answer, it’s now. True, you’vebeen rebuffed or refused bluntly. But situations

have changed and so has the attitude of others. Forgetabout the past. Focus on the here and now and begin allover again.

PISCES (February 19 - March 20) Be carefulwhat you promise. The current optimistic moodcould fool you into feeling that you’ve all the timein the world. But when they ask you fulfil

your commitment, things are likely to have changed somuch that you won’t be in the position to do what you’dsaid you would.

The new office-boy came into his boss’s office and said, ‘‘Ithink you’re wanted on the phone, sir.’’ ‘‘What do you mean, you think?’’ demanded the boss.‘‘Well, sir, the phone rang, I answered it and a voice said ‘Isthat you, you old fool?’ ‘’ explained the boy.

It was quite a hush hush thing.Sometime in the middle of lastmonth, a team of doctors from

the World Health Organisation vis-ited Delhi to perform investiga-tions and officially strike it off theSARS’ travel warning list. Theytook blood samples, sputum sam-ples, urine samples and water sam-ples. What is well known is thatDelhi was declared SARS-free. What is not so wellknown is that they discov-ered the prevalence of cer-tain other diseases whichthey submitted to the HealthMinistry. These were someof them.

CARS: Thiswas defined asthe ConditionalAccess RefusalSyndrome. Theteam found Del-hi citizensgripped by con-fusion, fear andpanic over theConditional Ac-cess System. Noone knew whatthe hell was go-ing on. The con-sensus seemedto be that aviewer gets fiveoptions:

No TV, OnlyD o o rd a r s h a n ,Only serialswith ShekharSuman, Only se-rials startingwith K, and,1,000 channels including the Playboychannel, but only viewable between 3am and 7 am.

RARS: This was the Red light Ac-ceptance Refusal Syndrome. ‘‘It’s a cu-rious thing,’’ commented Dr AhwanWoo, ‘‘but the optic nerves of the aver-age Delhi citizenseem to refusethe stimulus ofthe red trafficlight. The chaosthat results isobvious to see.’’

TAWS: The Tongue And Wallet Syn-drome. Extensive studies showed thatthere was a huge distance between aDelhi businessman’s tongue and wal-let. Thus a businessman may smileand tell someone. ‘‘Haan, Haan I’llsurely send you the money tomorrow.’’But this message could take weeks, even months to reach his wallet.

SAFS: Storm Approaching FearSyndrome. It seems that the av-erage Delhi person has an irra-tional fear of storms. ‘‘I don’tknow why,’’ said housewifeWarsha Jain, ‘‘but the momentI see thunderclouds in the sky Ifeel scared. Probably becausethe moment a storm starts the

electricity tendsto go off, oftenalong with thephones. It’sweird.’’

SARS: ScratchAnd Roll Syn-drome. We tookup secret obser-vation pointsand noticed thatwhenever a Del-hi male feelsthat he is not be-ing observed, hereaches downand puts hishand in for agood scratch. Af-ter that if hefeels that he stillhasn’t beenspotted he willroll the ...er fam-ily jewelsaround sticking

his buttocks far out one by one to helpthe process. Soon after he will try andshake your hand.It is not known whether any of thesediseases are curable. But extensivetests are still in progress.

DILLI TO PAGAL HAINShivjeet Kullar

The drilling began sevenyears ago, and last week ittouched bottom: nearly two

miles beneath the surface, thedeepest hole ever drilled throughice in the Northern Hemisphere. No wonder the internationalteam of scientists celebrated withChampagne.

The goal of the drilling formal-ly named the North Greenland IceCore Project, or North GRIP wasto extract a continuous sample ofice, all the way from Greenland’svast surface ice sheet down tobedrock.

The team of two dozen Euro-pean scientists and assistants, ledby Danes, are exploring the histo-ry of the earth’s changing climateand seekingto gain toolsto predict fu-ture changesin the cli-mate. In the1960s, theD a n i s hc h e m i s tWilli Dans-gaard dis-covered thathe could es-timate theearth’s sur-face temper-ature bycomparingthe ratio oftwo isotopesof oxygen inwater thatfalls as rain or snow; the ratiochanges with temperature but isunaffected by time. In someGreenland cores, individual lay-ers of ice can be dated like treerings. So preserved in glacier iceis the record of temperaturespast.

Trapped within the ice are alsobubbles of ancient air that oncefilled the spaces between thesnowflakes that formed the gla-cier. The air is released when thesamples are melted, permittingresearchers to study, for example, the relationship between theearth’s temperature and “green-

house” gases like methane andcarbon dioxide.

The scientists can also studyprecipitation, by measuring thethickness of annual layers, andthe impact of volcanoes, by exam-ining layers of ash.

The most recent core is expect-ed to contain ice about 120,000years’ old, 10,000 years or so be-fore the dawn of the first ice age.

Two other deep ice cores weredrilled in the early 1990s, one byEuropeans and another by Amer-icans, but the climate record pe-tered out about 100,000 years inthe past. Researchers want tostudy the climate during thewarm period, or interglacial, be-fore the last ice age.

If the past is any indication, theearth is at the end of anothersuch warm period, poised to de-scend into a new ice age. Earlierice cores showed that the transi-tion from glacial to interglacialwas rocky, marked by a “flicker-ing” climate that swung drastical-

ly back and forth several times, insome instances 15 degreesFahrenheit in a decade or less.

Nobody knows whether similarfluctuations could occur duringthe next transition from inter-glacial to glacial. Dr Sigfus J.Johnsen, a geophysicist at theNiels Bohr Institute of the Uni-versity of Copenhagen (and thescientist who popped the Cham-pagne corks), says it is a matter ofmore than passing interest.

“If our own warm period endsthis way,” he said, “we’re in bigtrouble.” It will take some timebefore ice from the deepest part ofthe core can be analysed. But theproject has already given the re-searchers at least one big sur-

prise.The very

last samplefrom the bot-tom of theice sheet in-cluded a tanicicle, aboutthe size of aroll of papertowels, hang-ing from thedrill. The re-s e a r c h e r sthink thedrill pene-trated apocket ofwater at thevery bottomof the icesheet.

They knew the bottom waswarm, heated by geothermal en-ergy in the underlying rock, butthey did not expect to be able tosample it. But it appears that theliquid spurted up and froze solidto the drill bit, which had passedthrough much cooler ice on theway down. The pocket of watercould have been covered eversince the ice sheet was firstformed, millions of years ago.

“I couldn’t believe my eyes,”said Dr Dorthe Dahl-Jensen, theproject’s chief scientist. “It couldcontain evidence of ancient life.”
