My Body Is Not Responding Like It Used To

Have you ever said or heard an older adult say, “my body is not responding like it

used to”? It seems like everything from losing weight to healing takes longer as you grow older. Often these changes are seen as part of the aging process, but that’s not always the case. “A decline in health is not always the result of aging. That’s why we address nagging symptoms before they become bigger problems,” says Laurence Rubenstein, MD, Professor and Chairman, Reynolds Department of Geriatric Medicine. “Early diagnosis helps prevent minor problems from becoming serious and requiring a hospital visit or long-term nursing care.”

Seniors and older adults often have complex health issues and benefit from a doctor who is trained to take care of their special needs. One good option is to turn to the geriatricians at the Senior Health Center at OU Medical Center. Geriatricians are doctors who are specially trained to diagnose and treat seniors’ unique health care problems. They take the time to manage the complex medical problem that many seniors experience. For example, seniors sometimes respond differently to medication than younger people do. Also, symptoms in seniors may mean different conditions than they do in younger people. Seniors often have

several specialists and benefit from having someone to monitor their medications. A geriatrician can help diagnose these problems in older adults. You can find more at www.oumedicine.com/SeniorHealth or call (405) 271-3050 for an appointment.

Join the Senior Class and Take Control of Your HealthThe Senior Class group was created as a healthy lifestyles resource for aging adults. Through a series of physician-led seminars, newsletters and senior-specific health literature, the Senior Class assists aging adults in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. We help you take control of your current conditions and prepare for the years ahead. For information on joining, go to www.oumedicine.com/SeniorClass.

Other Resources for SeniorsThe Oklahoma Healthy Aging Initiative (OHAI) has recently opened the second of five locations. They provide low cost or no cost, evidence-based health and wellness education to seniors, caregivers and health care providers. If you’d like more information or to schedule a class or presentation in your area, contact the Education Director, Maggie Darcey at [email protected] or call (405) 271-6424.

There are several things to consider regarding transitioning from a hospital back into the home. For many seniors, this process may be complicated depending on their circumstances. Seniors are of special concern during this phase, especially those who suffer medical conditions and are required to take different medications at varying times of the day.

Considerations include:• Hydration• Nutrition• Medication reminders• Mobility• Safety• Medical conditions that may

need monitoring• Future appointments with

health care providers

Take care of your gums…help your heart? What? The American Heart Association published a statement in April, 2012, supporting an association between gum disease and heart disease. In fact, many studies show an as-yet-unexplained association between gum disease and several serious health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and stroke. The term “gum disease” is a bit misleading, because it not only harms gums but also the bones that hold teeth in place. It is an infection of the tissues that surround and support your teeth and is a major cause of tooth loss in adults. Because gum disease is usually painless, you may not know you have it. Also referred to as periodontal disease, gum disease is caused by plaque, the sticky film of bacteria that is constantly forming on our teeth.Advanced gum disease is called periodontitis which worsens over time, resulting in loosening teeth, persistent bad breath and bad taste. Other WARNING SIGNS that can signal a problem are: gums that bleed easily; red, swollen, tender gums; gums that have pulled away from the teeth; any change in the way your teeth bite together or the fit of a partial denture. Some factors INCREASE THE RISK OF DEVELOPING GUM DISEASE. They are: Poor Oral Hygiene, Smoking or chewing tobacco, genetics, crooked teeth that are hard to keep clean, diabetes, and medications including steroids, certain anti-epilepsy drugs, cancer therapy drugs, and some calcium channel blockers given for high blood pressure. It is possible to have gum disease and have NO WARNING SIGNS. That is one reason why regular dental check-ups, periodontal examinations and professional cleanings are very important. Of course, good dental care at home is always the first line of treatment with proper brushing and flossing daily and eating a balanced diet. Remember, a healthy mouth is part of a healthy body!

If you experience any symptoms of a stroke, call 911 as you may need immediate medical attention.

RAISE YOUR STROKE AWARENESS Strokes are the third leading cause of death in the United States and a leading cause of serious, long-term disability in adults. About 600,000 new strokes are reported in the U.S. each year. The good news is that treatments are available that can greatly reduce the damage caused by a stroke. However, you need to recognize the symptoms of a stroke and get to a hospital quickly. Getting treatment within 60 minutes can prevent disability.

KNOW THE SIGNSBecause a stroke injures the brain, you may not realize that you are having a stroke. To a bystander, someone having a stroke may just look unaware or confused. Stroke victims have the best chance if someone around them recognizes the symptoms and acts quickly.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF A STROKE?The stroke symptoms are distinct because they happen quickly:• Suddennumbnessorweaknessoftheface, armorleg(especiallyononesideof

the body)• Suddenconfusion,troublespeakingorunderstandingspeech• Suddentroubleseeinginoneorbotheyes• Suddentroublewalking,dizziness,lossofbalanceorcoordination• Suddensevereheadachewithnoknowncause

WHAT SHOULD A BYSTANDER DO?If you believe someone is having a stroke—if he or she suddenly loses the ability to speak, or move an arm or leg on one side, or experiences facial paralysis on one side—call 911 immediately.

Understanding The Close Relationship Between Teeth And BonesThere's a close relationship between TEETH and the supporting FACIAL BONE. One of Dr. Gibson’s most important messages is ADDRESS TOOTH LOSS IMMEDIATELY and consider implants your best solution. Dentures are not as good of a solution because the bone slowly dissolves which reduces the stability of the denture then changes the appearance of the patient’s facial structure. Implants are the only way to halt this process. In addition, their placement can greatly improve the stability and function of the denture. The stability of the denture is critical for day-to-day activities such as eating and speaking. Dr. Keith Gibson Is No Ordinary Dentist - Dr. Gibson Has a Hands-on Approach That Is Hard To Find ElsewhereDr. Gibson is a caring craftsman and surgeon. He is an experienced technician, providing more “aesthetically pleasing and user-friendly” dental prostheses. His dedication to providing the highest quality of individualized patient care has compelled him to integrate cutting-edge technology into his hands-on approach to dentistry, which he has refined over his 27 years of service.

By performing the entire process from start to finish - from the gathering of data, designing and creating the dentures

personally in his own laboratory, and even placing dental implants - Dr. Gibson is able to ensure that patients receive the best possible experience and outcome.Only Care For The Teeth That You Want To KeepProgressive deterioration of bone due to tooth loss requires increasingly greater effort to remedy and is irreversible without physical intervention. Bone is much like muscle in that it can deteriorate without proper care and maintenance. Grafting procedures and implants stop bone deterioration, while sustaining existing structure. This can be a significant aid in maintaining dental and overall physical health.3D Imagining Means Better DiagnosisDr. Gibson’s use of 3D Imaging has a

Bone loss is a serious condition caused by tooth loss that results in a weak jawbone & premature aging — but you CAN prevent this... the best treatment is maintaining good dental health.

major impact on the patient’s comfort and success. It enables him to provide a much less invasive surgical procedure, as well as a more predictable outcome.

Dr. Gibson’s knowledge and expertise translates into personalized care of the highest caliber for his patients. His general practice can address a broad range of needs, including:

• Basic needs - cleanings, fillings, crowns, bridges, root canals

• Cosmetic needs - teeth whitening, veneers

• Functional needs - dentures, partials or issues with the temporomandibular joint or “TMJ”

• Surgical needs - dental implants to replace one or more missing teeth

A Better Fit = Better ComfortHand-crafted dentures are another way that this Oklahoma City practice stands head-and-shoulders above the rest. The use of superior quality materials combined with Dr. Gibson’s attention to artistic detail, results in dentures that are more natural looking as well as comfortable.

Continuing education is of great importance to Dr. Gibson. He successfully performs the latest techniques to better serve each patient who visits his Oklahoma City practice. Whatever your dental needs or concerns, Dr. Gibson and his friendly staff are ready to serve you.

Todd Feehan has worn many hats, the latest is inventor. Todd is a plumber by trade and owner of Dad’s Plumbing and Drain Service. He never set out to be an inventor, but when he didn't find a suitable solution for his physically challenged customer, Kelley Richey, he created his own.

A little over three years ago, Todd Feehan got a call from his daughter’s softball coach, Ralph Richey, for a simple plumbing problem. The Richey’s daughter, Kelley, had hit the toilet with her motorized wheelchair causing it to fall off its base.

After repeated calls for the same issue, Todd realized there had to be a better answer than multiple service calls.

This was a challenge for Todd, not simply to fix the broken toilet or reset its base but to find a permanent solution. One that would change this from a continuing problem into a permanent solution.

Todd began calling area businesses to find a piece of equipment that could protect the base of the toilet from impact. He even called the American Disabilities Association (ADA) looking for anything that would keep Kelley's motorized wheelchair from bumping into the toilet base, knocking it over. Nothing existed. The ADA representative on the phone

Dad’s Plumbing specializes in finding alternate options to client challenges.

The Kelley Plate

Motorized wheelchairs such as this one are difficult to manage in small spaces. They can easily bump into a toilet's base, knocking it over or cracking it. Todd Feehan, owner of Dad's Plumbing, has created "The Kelley Plate", a simple, yet creative invention to solve a frustrating daily problem for physically challenged individuals.

The Kelley Plate installed wraps around the base.

A problem is just an unsolved riddle to Todd Feehan who likes nothing better than a challenge. He’s had a career across several industries, moving on once the challenge was gone. Plumbing however is Todd's career for life now. He constantly finds new and innovative solutions of his own creation, like The Kelley Plate.Todd sees his business as one that specializes in finding solutions that best fit the problem, rather than using the easiest or most obvious solution. "I love the challenge," Todd says, “Many plumbing problems take a lot of expertise and innovation.” That’s the reason Todd’s clients are so pleased with the work he and his team perform. The company currently has a team of six employees and is growing. Dad's Plumbing focuses mainly on residential work with some light commercial and remodel, repair and maintenance.

told Todd, "why don't you invent something," so he did.

Todd designed a plate which he and his team started referring to as "The Kelley Plate" since Kelley was the benefactor of the invention. The strike plate is high enough for easy cleaning underneath and is able to protect the base but allows the wheelchair to move closer to the toilet.

Todd installed his creation for Kelley a little over two years ago and has found great success with it, eliminating repeated service calls. In fact, since The Kelley Plate was installed, the toilet has not been broken or dislodged once.

Todd has been through nine designs to perfect his patent-pending prototype. The plate connects with concrete floors and is bolted down to prevent shifting. It's made from a heavy-gauge stainless steel for durability. Todd was a nominee for the Journal Record's Innovator of the Year for 2013. Motorized wheelchairs are often the biggest culprit because accurate mobility is an issue. They often bump into things in small spaces, specifically the foot plate that often protrudes out farther than the chair.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2010 there were 56.7 million non-institutionalized persons with disabilities. Todd's hope is that the U.S. Department of Justice, who enforces the Americans with Disabilities Act, will not only support The Kelley Plate, but make it a requirement of public restrooms across the country.

Feehan said he expects to build and install 10 to 15 plates this year to gain

Kelley Richey a graduate of Edmond North High Class of ’98, had what seemed to be a sinus infection. After two weeks, Kelley’s mother, Alisha Richey, realized it was something much more. “I really noticed that Kelley’s speech was starting to slip and could tell there was something unusual happening to her,” Alisha said. She was diagnosed with a virus that was causing continued brain stem atrophy. Kelley’s speech and motor skills deteriorated. She was put through a battery of tests, but the reason was never determined. Kelley, now 34 years old, has difficulty speaking, cannot walk, and consequently uses a wheelchair.

She and her family have learned to cope with Kelley’s disability and now look toward the future. “We’ve had so many blessings, and Kelley’s so brave and strong,” Alisha said. “You just never know what your life will be like, and you have to deal with what God hands you. Kelley’s had to basically relearn and re-educate herself on pretty much everything in life, but she’s making it.”

In 2003, Canine Companions for Independence, a nonprofit organization that provides assistance dogs matched Kelley with her companion dog, Annele. Dogs like Annele enable people to lead more independent lives, overcoming social and physical challenges. Annele has brought much joy back into Kelley’s life.

Concerned About Mistakes Being Made in Social Security Benefit Planning?

With an estimated ten thousand baby boomers qualifying for Social Security benefits every day, I see far too many people in their early sixties making decisions, irrevocable decisions, thenregretting it for the rest of their lives.

With just a few hours of careful assessment, a new retiree can increase the income received from Social Security by as much as $200,000 over his lifetime. Understanding the complicatedoptions a person has available as he/she begins to make these important decisions can be a major challenge. People think that Social Security Administration personnel will help them make these determinations, but the fact is they are prohibited from doing so. Social Security personnel can help you complete the forms, but they are not able to help make the important decisions. For example, when to begin taking benefits, whether to claim your own benefits, or if you might be better served to claim spousal benefits as opposed to making a claim against primary benefits. Claiming a spousal benefit over taking one’s own benefits will often yield a higher monthlyincome.

Using a method known as “file and suspend,” a couple may receive significantly more monthly income for the rest of their lives. If one spouse had a larger average annual income than the claiming spouse, and if properly executed, file and suspend can be implemented with no negative impact to the higher-earning spouse’s future benefits. This particular method is often overlooked as an option.

Additionally, few people know the various options available that allow them to claim on adivorced spouse’s benefits. This can be done if a marriage lasted 10 years or longer and you are making the initial benefit claim after age 62, even if your spouse has remarried multiple times.

Another important misunderstanding is the permanent 25 percent loss of income suffered when claiming at age 62 versus waiting until one’s full retirement age of 66. Also, claiming at age 70 instead of at full retirement age will yield a monthly check 32 percent higher than claiming at age 66. That is an increase in income of eight percent for each year one waits. Where else, in this environment, are you going to find a guaranteed increase in future income of eight percent?

It’s complicated. Very complicated. Whether you believe you or your spouse will live 6 months or 30 years, you owe it to yourself and your entire family to carefully investigate your options.

(Oklahoma City) At age 72, Kenneth was losing his eyesight to macular degenera-tion. “I got to where I couldn’t do cross-words. I couldn’t read the paper,” he said.

Kenneth was forced to give up his favorite hobby, fishing. “That’s what I missed the most—tying a fishhook on the line.”

Kenneth’s doctor told him there was nothing more that could be done. Many people living with low vision or blindness have heard these words with despair. Often what doctors mean is, “there is no surgical or medical treatment that will cure or reverse your vision loss.” However, with low vision rehabilitation, people who have low vision, legal blindness, or complete blindness can enjoy life again.

Kenneth visited NewView Oklahoma’s state-of-the-art, comprehensive low vision rehabilitation clinic. “I went up there and they opened my eyes. I’m seeing things now that I haven’t seen for years,” he said. “I can read the paper. I can work the crossword puzzles.”

Each visit to the low vision clinic starts with a low vision eye exam. The doctor details a patient’s specific needs and prescribes the needed rehabilitation. Occupational therapists with training in low vision assist the doctor in providing in-home rehabilitation that meets the goals of each patient.

“They did a thorough job,” Kenneth said. “They really helped me. Now I can tie a fishhook on the line; I don’t have to ask someone to do it for me.”

Family member or friend, someone you know may be living with vision loss from macular degeneration, glaucoma, or diabetes. Many people with vision loss are afraid to come forward and tell their families that they are having difficulty seeing because they fear losing their independence. With the aid of low vision devices, such as high-magnification reading glasses, hand held and electronic magnifiers, modifications in the home, and training on how to adapt daily living skills, people with vision loss are finding the hope that once wasn’t available.

They are finding at NewView Oklahoma that “It’s not what you can see. It’s what you can be.”

HosPets is Valir Hospice’s pet therapy program that brings smiles, warmth and unconditional love to hospice patients residing in assisted living facilities and nursing homes. This paw-warming program began in 2005 and continues to grow in popularity.  Since its inception, Valir Hospice patients have received thousands of visits and tail wags from HosPets volunteers and their guardians.

Well-behaved animals of many breeds and sizes participate in HosPets. Each dog receives special training and must pass the Therapy Dog International test. This test includes skills needed to interact with hospice patients such as maneuvering around walkers, staying at the bedside and not jumping up. Additionally, the pet’s guardian is required to complete sixteen hours of Valir Hospice volunteer training. Research shows petting a dog lowers blood pressure and reduces stress. The HosPets program has been very successful.

The PAWformance Dog & Pony Show is always a hit, as well. Valir has miniature ponies and dogs performing some amazing tricks to the delight of patients and their families.

Valir Hospice is a division of Valir Health. Valir Health is a comprehensive healthcare organization specializing in a full range of medical services. Based in Oklahoma, Valir Health offers inpatient and outpatient physical rehabilitation, workforce wellness, and end-of-life care. In every case, Valir ensures their patients are treated at the right time, with the right care.

Sometimes, making a difference is not about what we say, but rather, how we say it. Sometimes we don’t have to say anything at all.

A gentle disposition, a listening ear, simple companionship: often, this is all that’s needed to turn an ordinary day extraordinary, to bring a smile and lift the spirits of someone in need. And this is what therapy dogs do best.

The Human Animal Link of Oklahoma (HALO) Foundation notes that therapy dogs do this, and more, offering “moments of simple joy and peace, reaching into the minds and hearts to communicate with people who just may have shut out the human factor.”

Mercy Home Health and Hospice volunteers, Sarah and Keith Montgomery, regularly witness the effects of this special medicine as they greet Mercy patients with their therapy dog, Daisy, a nine-year-old golden retriever-poodle mix.

“Research has shown that dogs help lower our blood-pressure,” Sarah says. “But sometimes I think the best

benefits are the smiles she brings to the faces of the patients we visit.”

Some patients are incapable of smiling, however, due to debilitating conditions, but this doesn’t faze Daisy. All she requires is an opportunity to show her love and compassion, an opportunity to demonstrate the thousands of years of evolution that have made dogs and humans inseparable.

“We visited a man in intensive care, who had just lost his own dog,” Sarah said, recalling the first visit she and Daisy made following completion of HALO therapy training. “He said he wanted to pet a dog, so we brought in Daisy. She got up in the bed and laid beside him. Every day for the next five days, Keith brought Daisy back to visit the man, until he passed away.”

The Sisters of Mercy have always gone where people have needed them. Today Mercy Home Health and Hospice continues in that almost 200-year tradition by caring for loved ones in their own home as well as nursing homes and other assisted-living facilities.

As part of the Mercy Home Health and Hospice pet-therapy program, Daisy visits Mercy patients in the hospital and in other areas around the city, where she quietly provides her own special brand of medicine, dispensed with her wet nose and wagging tail.

Like wolves, our dogs evolved as carnivores, and that means a meat based diet is the most biologically appropriate for our beloved canine and feline companions. Think about it, they have a short and acidic digestive tract, and sharp teeth on a single hinged jaw designed for slicing meat.

Commercial dry dog foods were introduced in the 1930’s as an inexpensive and convenient alternative to the butcher. These foods contained large amounts of grain and meat by-products that are otherwise considered to be unusable. In the 1960’s pet food makers agreed that fresh meat and vegetables are excellent foods, but they argued that an economical and healthy alternative would be to use waste products. This mindset still thrives

today with some of the large pet food

companies. As a result, there has been an explosion of allergies and chronic illness with our dogs and cats. While most pets can “survive” on common conventional pet foods, the question remains… will they “thrive” on them? Today’s consumer seems to be more aware of the ingredients in their own food, and is beginning to realize that their pets also have special dietary needs.

The staff at A1 Pet Emporium believes that their dogs and cats should have diets that more closely resemble what these animals would eat in their natural environment.

foods containing high meat content and lower carbohydrates are the best choices, while foods containing corn, wheat, by-products, or artificial colors are not allowed on their shelves.

If you want to feed your furry friend a healthy diet, you should stop by A1 Pet Emporium and visit with one of their specialists about all of the healthy choices that are available. They have an extensive selection of biologically appropriate brands that are not as expensive as most people think when it comes to “specialty stores”. They can even give you a free sample of something your dog will love!

Dr. Larry Engelmann

Hearing Wellnessfor the Greatest Generation

by dr. Larry engelmann

Communication is about staying in touch, laughing at punch lines, hearing sermons, and talking with friends & family. Uncorrected hearing loss results in conversations becoming embarrassing, stressful, or frustrating. Improved hearing lets you communicate with confidence, while having fun and remaining active!

Keys to hearing wellness are early diagnosis, proper treatment, and preventative care. Reduced hearing, “the silent hurt”, can go undetected, but not unnoticed by others. Adults who receive proper treatment report significant improvements in mental health, self-confidence, work and grandchildren relationships, and lead fulfilling social lives.

New advances in technology can provide treatments for tinnitus (an internal noise like a ringing or buzzing in your ears). Patients commonly report their tinnitus “is softer” or they “are no longer aware of their tinnitus”.

Computerized hearing aids are lightweight and provide natural sound quality. They have automatic volume and noise-reducing adjustments. Patients often remark, “I should have done this sooner!” - “Thank you so much for all that you’ve done for me to improve my hearing and my life.” - “I am absolutely thrilled with how easy my hearing aids are to use.”

Dr. Engelmann has received higher patient satisfaction ratings than most audiologists across the nation. Nearly 100% rated him as ‘Excellent’ regarding appointment satisfaction for: 1) Courtesy, 2) Listening skills, 3) Technical skills, 4) Amount of time he spent with you, and 5) Thoroughness and ease in understanding instructions.

My commitment is to provide the best possible care and most helpful treatments to prevent further hearing loss. I have specialized in hearing wellness and treatment of patients 50+ years of age for 37 years and have successfully helped thousands.

Learn about hearing wellness and receive access to the most advanced tinnitus treatments and hearing enhancements suited to your specific needs.

Dr. Ed Shadid is a father, a spinal surgeon, and currently represents Ward 2 as a member of the Oklahoma City Council.

An OKC native, he attended OU Medical School and his public service is inspired by his Christian faith.

Dr. Shadid is running to be the Mayor of OKC because the needs of senior citizens are being ignored.

Public Safety The safety of our citizens is our most important responsibility. OKC now ranks in the top ten large cities for violent crime. The reason? We have the same number of police officers as we did 20 years ago but with 150,000 more people spread out over a greater area. We are building three new fire stations without a plan for how to hire the staff for them. As Mayor, Dr. Shadid will lead an effort to find a long-term funding source to add public safety personnel in order to keep us safe. Because of his stance on public safety, Dr. Shadid has earned the unanimous endorsements from the OKC Fraternal order of Police and the OKC Firefighters Association.

Public Transit There are more than 100,000 people in the area whose health does not allow them to drive or who cannot afford to own a car. Dr. Shadid will fight to treat our transit riders with dignity by investing in modern bus shelters and expanding bus service to Sundays and evenings so that seniors citizens can age in place and have reliable transit. A Focus on Public Health As OKC’s first physician to be Mayor, Dr. Shadid will appoint individuals who are concerned with how decisions made by the City affect our public health. OKC is being overrun with addiction related issues. We have among the highest prescription drug abuse in the world. 2/3s of all ER visits by a senior citizen are drug and alcohol related. We cannot incarcerate our way out of this problem and we need leaders willing to meet the challenge. Neighborhood Interests Over Special Interests Our neighborhoods are working harder than ever and there is real concern growing in the city that the neighborhoods are being left behind. The city is building multiple large-scale projects downtown without a funding source for $10-15 million per year of operating costs other than from the same budget which is projected to face shortfalls simply trying to keep up with the escalating costs of running city government. Core services in our neighborhoods cannot be sacrificed to pay for other projects. It’s time for a fiscally responsible Mayor. A vote for Dr. Ed Shadid is a vote to protect seniors.

On March 4th, 2014, cast your vote for Dr. Ed Shadid.
