According to legend, the ancient OlympicGames were founded by Heracles

( the Roman Hercules) , a son of Zeus.

In Ancient Greece, at a place calledOlympia, the first Olympic Games wereheld at 776 BC .

The Ancient Olympic Games were heldevery four years, for nearly thousandyears. The Games, like all Greek Games,were an intrinsic part of a religious

festival held in honor of Zeus.

In 393 CE, the Roman emperorTheodosius I, a Christian, abolished theGames because of their pagan influences.

The very first modern Olympic Games

opened in the first week of April 1896.

Modern Olympics : The very first modern Olympic Games opened in the first week of April

1896- Athens, Greece

Pole vaulting, sprints, shot put, weight lifting, swimming, cycling, targetshooting, tennis, marathon and gymnastics were all events at the firstOlympics.

An Olympiad is a period of four successive years.

Women were first allowed to participate in 1900 at the second modernOlympic Games.

Because of World War I and World War II, there were no Olympic Gamesin 1916, 1940, or 1944.

Tennis was played at the Olympics until 1924, then reinstituted in 1988

The 2004 Olympic Games in Athens was called the Games of the XXVIIIOlympiad.

The Official Olympic Flag

Created by Pierre de Coubertinin 1914, the Olympic flagcontains five interconnectedrings on a white background.The five rings symbolize the fivesignificant continents and are

interconnected to symbolize thefriendship to be gained fromthese internationalcompetitions.

The colors were chosenbecause at least one of them

appeared on the flag of everycountry in the world.

The Olympic flag was first flownduring the 1920 OlympicGames.

The Olympic flame is a practicecontinued from the ancientOlympic Games.

In Olympia (Greece), a flame

was ignited by the sun and thenkept burning until the closing ofthe Olympic Games.

The flame first appeared in themodern Olympics at the 1928

Olympic Games in Amsterdam.

INDIAN HISTORY IN OLYMPICS

India is credited for first participating at the Olympic Games in 1900,

with a lone athlete (Norman Pritchard) winning two medals inathletics. The nation first sent a team to the Summer Olympic Games

in 1920, and has participated in every Summer Games since then. India

has also competed at several Winter Olympic Games since 1964.

The Indian Hockey team at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, later going on todefeat Germany 8-1 in the final

Indian athletes have won a total of 17 medals, mostly in field hockey.

The men's field hockey team was dominant in Olympic competition,

winning eleven medals in twelve Olympiads between 1928 and 1980,

including six successive gold medals from 19281956.

The National Olympic Committee for India is the Indian Olympic

Association, and was created in 1927
