La historia de los primeros Mártires de la Iglesia de Roma

Habían cristianos en Roma dentro de una docena de años después de la muerte de Jesús, aunque

no eran los conversos del "Apóstol de los gentiles" (Romanos 15:20). Pablo aún no los había visita-

do en el momento en que escribió su gran carta en 57-58 A.D.

Había una gran población judía en Roma. Probablemente como resultado de la controversia entre

judíos y judíos cristianos, el emperador Claudio expulsó a todos los judíos de Roma en 49-50 A.D.

Suetonio, el historiador, dice que la expulsión se debió a disturbios en la ciudad "causada por el

Chrestus cierto" [Cristo]. Tal vez muchos regresaron después de la muerte de Claudio en 54 A.D. La

carta de Pablo fue dirigida a una Iglesia con miembros de antecedentes judíos y gentiles.

En julio de 64 A.D., más de la mitad de Roma fue destruida por un fuego. El rumor culpó a Nero de

la tragedia, que quería ampliar su palacio. Cambió la culpa acusando a los cristianos. Según el his-

toriador Tácito, muchos cristianos fueron condenados a muerte por su "odio a la raza humana". Pe-

dro y Pablo estaban probablemente entre las víctimas.

Amenazado por una revuelta del ejército y condenado a muerte por el senado, Nero se suicidó en

68 A.D. a la edad de 31 años.

Reflexión

Dondequiera que se predicaba la Buena Nueva de Jesús, encontró la misma oposición que Jesús, y

muchos de los que comenzaron a seguirlo compartieron su sufrimiento y su muerte. Pero ninguna

fuerza humana pudo detener el poder del Espíritu desatado sobre el mundo. La sangre de los márti-

res siempre ha sido, y será siempre, la semilla de los cristianos.

First Martyrs of the Church of Rome’s Story

There were Christians in Rome within a dozen or so years after the death of Jesus, though they

were not the converts of the “Apostle of the Gentiles” (Romans 15:20). Paul had not yet visited

them at the time he wrote his great letter in 57-58 A.D.

There was a large Jewish population in Rome. Probably as a result of controversy between Jews

and Jewish Christians, the Emperor Claudius expelled all Jews from Rome in 49-50 A.D. Suetonius

the historian says that the expulsion was due to disturbances in the city “caused by the certain

Chrestus” [Christ]. Perhaps many came back after Claudius’ death in 54 A.D. Paul’s letter was ad-

dressed to a Church with members from Jewish and Gentile backgrounds.

In July of 64 A.D., more than half of Rome was destroyed by fire. Rumor blamed the tragedy on Ne-

ro, who wanted to enlarge his palace. He shifted the blame by accusing the Christians. According to

the historian Tacitus, many Christians were put to death because of their “hatred of the human

race.” Peter and Paul were probably among the victims.

Threatened by an army revolt and condemned to death by the senate, Nero committed suicide in 68

A.D. at the age of 31.

Reflection

Wherever the Good News of Jesus was preached, it met the same opposition as Jesus did, and

many of those who began to follow him shared his suffering and death. But no human force could

stop the power of the Spirit unleashed upon the world. The blood of martyrs has always been, and

will always be, the seed of Christians.

“The Lord loves justice and right and fills the Earth with goodness.” Psalm 33(v5)

donations were so generous. We took part in a beautiful project that

will help many people during the summer months. St. Mary’s collect-

ed 442 boxes of cereal!
